A Podcast giving tools and inspiration for today’s leaders.
This episode my guest Breanna May discusses her love of how emotional intelligence has become the superpower in her personal and professional journey to date. A law degree didn't fulfil Breanna's inner quest and she moved into education. Working as a teenage mindset coach Breanna helped teenage girls navigate high school socially, emotionally, and academically. She noticed that the girls' emotional state and mindset had a significant impact on their academic performance. Breanna then expanded her work to include mother-daughter retreats and coaching women, as she believed that many people were not taught emotional intelligence and were instead taught to suppress their emotions. Listen in as we discuss the importance of self-awareness and emotional intelligence in personal and professional development; the need for our youth adolescents to be courageous and confident in their actions, and the importance of balancing mental and emotional well-being. Breanna shared her experiences with her Mind School certification program and her Level Up Your Life online course, which focus on emotional intelligence and personal growth. They also touched on the impact of social media and technology on modern society and the need for individuals to be more mindful and present in their daily lives. We also covered the need for updated leadership styles that prioritize integrity, emotional regulation, and collaboration, leaders walking with their people and leading by example, being adaptable and open to change, as well as the importance of considering the well-being of both the leader and their team. Breanna plans to open a business mastermind for coaches and leaders, and her podcast, which has reached 200,000 downloads. They also discussed the need for self-directed and self-motivated individuals in the current business landscape. Phillip and I have a educational leadership background which I'm sure you notice especially as we talked Reimagining Leadership, Inclusion, and Wellbeing, Divisiveness and Empowering Diverse Voices and Perspectives. Tune in as we explore the need for effective leadership and the influence individuals can have on shaping the future. We highlighted the importance of leaders being inclusive and not presuming to have all the answers. Phillip expressed regret over the polarization and vilification that occurred during the referendum period in Australia, particularly regarding the role and voice of First Nations Australians. We also discussed the concept of leadership, with Phillip suggesting a shift from the traditional 'silverback' metaphor to a new narrative. According to Phillip, the role of a leader should be to help frame questions and enable solutions in collaboration with the community, rather than being the dominant figure who imposes solutions. This new approach would require a different ecosystem and environment as this new model of leadership is necessary to address complex issues such as climate change, wealth distribution, and access to justice. The changing attitudes towards personal well-being and professional success post covid shows a growing trend of individuals who believe they have something to offer and are willing to take risks to achieve their goals. Additionally, we are observing a shift towards seeking out spiritual communities and a desire to connect with the right people for influence. We also covered the importance of empowering diverse voices, particularly those of young people, and the value of having a range of perspectives and experiences represented. Phillip shared his leadership style, which emphasizes openness to a variety of viewpoints and emotional reasoning in decision-making. We acknowledged the challenges and potential risks of this approach but agreed on the importance of hearing and considering all voices. I am sure you will find some interesting points and views here form one of Australia's finest educators. You are in for another treat! Our guest is Elizabeth Williamson, Founder, and Owner as well as Resilience, Relationships and Conflict Resolution Expert. Elizabeth has an incredible personal story that she shares with us this episode of Thriving Matters podcast that I know you will be glued to! In her personal life, Elizabeth has faced many physical challenges, including surgery in 2012 to remove a rare type of tumour within her spinal cord. From paralysis to re-learning to walk and building a successful business, Elizabeth embodies a spirit of resilience, and to value learning from the inevitable the downfalls and scars that accompany this journey. She is passionate about helping leaders and teams develop flexible thinking, successful collaborations and creative problem-solving skills. She created the RE-IMAGINING RESILIENCE™ Program to share a multifaceted and insightful exploration of resilience characteristics. You will hear us talk about: RELATIONSHIP SKILLS – Arguably the most important set of skills for a thriving and impactful life. Our first relationship is with ourself and gaining mastery with that persuasive negative inner voice to make peace with ourself to be your very best friend. Then there is love and heartache for many couples and families who want to communicate better and argue less, but feel like they are going around in circles without finding solutions. Elizabeth shares over 45 years of research-based skills, arts and science behind creating meaningful and rewarding relationships utilising the work of John and Julie Gottman. RESILIENCE SKILLS - Elizabeth's life has been richly informed by grief and loss early in life, personal and professional challenges, and over the past decade, learning to live with paralysis and the consequences of spinal cord trauma. 2012 surgery to remove a rare type of spinal cord tumour turned her life upside down. Post-surgery she was paralysed from her shoulders down, unsure if she would ever walk again. With substantial daily effort and extensive professional rehabilitation, she has eventually re-learnt to walk. She continues this only with ongoing, intensive physical therapies and a rather constant conflict with gravity CONFLICT SKILLS - The Inevitable Conflicts in our workplaces & communities. If you know what really works to resolve conflict you can stop being exhausted by family, leadership or team disputes, caught too often in the middle of difficult conversations or feeling blamed for things that are not your responsibility "Thinking new thoughts is really hard work. Creative thought requires you to think in at least sets of 5. (Most of us think in binary terms: either/or, right/wrong, us/them), which will keep you stuck with obvious problems). Try generating 5 options to difficult problems – the first two you won't want, the third is an unhappy compromise, the fourth is closer to your dreams, and the fifth is hard work but insightful. Great, now you're really thinking!!" If you enjoyed our conversation, share this with your friends and colleagues. What a privilege it was talking to Junie and sharing in her deliberate quest of understanding people and culture that has led her to where she is today. Junie has always believed that if you understand the systems in which you live in and how they dictate what you'll benefit from or miss out on, then you can design and imagine endless solutions to your wildest dreams. And, wild dreams she has lived, to say the least: ranked in the top 50 employees in banking in Canada, liaised with public relations and media in India to raise awareness for mining workers' rights and micro-businesses led by women in India, taught English to speakers of other languages in México and China, and co-designed health programs in remote and rural communities in the Northern Territory (Australia). Listen in as we talk about her Ironman quests, and how now, she has broken into the tech industry (as a non-tech) by tapping into her entrepreneurial spirit to start seeing better representation in product design. Our guest this episode is Alex Blake, an international best selling author, editor, intuitive coach and mentor, entrepreneur and mum of two lads. Listeners, you will thoroughly enjoy how Alex has mined diamonds, managed multi-million-dollar construction projects during a 25-year career as a mining engineer, trekked Mount Kilimanjaro, and edited 17 bestselling books – yet her greatest achievements may be surmounting the challenges of parenting. Alex shares her truth, her vulnerabilites and her curosity mindset that has enabled her to unlock stories that shine. Listen in as we discuss the increbible power of self awareness to take charge of your own destiny and live the life you love. Alex believes that everything is a choice - that 'truth' can be revealing, confronting and exhilarating, and by using your intuition to reveal the truth in your heart you are able to DO THAT THING you deeply desire. "Truth provides you freedom to be who you are, to share your gifts with others, to live from your heart. That is what brings abundance, joy, adventure and love." We also talk about her pathway from engineering to book publishing and the incredible value of each of our stories. Everyone is on their own journey and may not think their story is compelling or unique or worth sharing. However, when we share stories, we give others a glimpse of inspiration. We plant a seed. You don't have to know the outcome all the time - just keep following what is in your heart and that is what will lead you to living and creating all that you love. It can be challenging to stick to your path and not be distracted by all the noise, conditioning and beliefs. But we ONLY get this one life and it's ours to live it our way. This is the second conversation Kerry and I have had which I thought was too important not to have! Why you ask? Kerry's new best seller is right 'on the money' as it looks deeply into 'How To Heal A Workplace' and is backed up with current post covid research that showcases that 80% of workplaces have a toxic culture. We discuss many things but most importantly, Kerry references women who are experiencing burnout at higher rates than men, identified from their challenges in being able to speak up. Kerry uses many examples of her work case studies to show that burnout can be used to great effect as it makes women better people leaders. Love the above the line thinking! Listen in as we talk differences in generational communication, lack of soultion focused problem solving, expanding our self awareness skills and being more open to 'difference and diversity'. "When we understand ourselves as a system, we can self actualise and do things to assist ourself. Understanding what is a 'normal response' and what is a 'perception of threat' can move us from feeling that everything is 'black and white' to 'a rainbow' of options and strategies.
