We start with a quick report from a local nerd convention, where Kevin met up with some heroes of 1970s kids TV: Our old friends Wesley Eure and Kathy Coleman from Land of the Lost, our new friends Doug and Emmy Jo from The New Zoo Revue... and the legendary Sid Krofft. (We're still sort of freaking out about that last one...) Then Kevin and the Mayor of Chickentown look at the prime time TV shows that debuted half a century ago, in the year 1974. It's a short list (there were just three networks, kids), but it includes some long-running classics like Happy Days, Good Times, Little House on the Prairie, and Rockford Files. It also includes some short-lived shows that few remember, even if their casts included future stars like Jodie Foster, Penny Marshall, and Mark Hamill. And if you're looking for a show about Swedish immigrants in 1850s Minnesota starring Kurt Russell, the android from Logan's Run, and Bobby Brady's brother... we've got you covered there too. How essential is gender balance for business success? Does your workplace view challenges as growth opportunities? After a health crisis, Kathy Coleman shifted from a “just get on with it” mindset to valuing the vital role of emotional intelligence and gender balance in thriving organisations. Now through her work in gender balance and corporate transformation, Kathy emphasises the importance of balanced leadership traits for success, happiness, and well-being. Challenging the status quo and redefining workplace dynamics to foster a more fulfilling professional life, Kathy pioneers a different approach to gender balance: one that delivers transformational change for individuals, organisations and bottom-line profit. KEY TAKEAWAY ‘A more feminine approach is not just let's be clear about why we want to do this, but also let's enjoy the journey of getting there, and let's make it mean something for people, not just for profit.' ABOUT KATHY Kathy Coleman spent over three decades delivering transformative change programmes on behalf of CapGemini, Deloitte and EY. Conforming to the traditional masculine characteristics of leadership took its toll and Kathy suffered a severe health scare. Inspired by her own journey and recovery Kathy now champions a paradigm shift that allows women (and men) to embrace their feminine leadership traits and find success, happiness and wellbeing from a more balanced and authentic place. In this episode, as we occasionally do, we step into the world of Mental Wellbeing, and support in the workplaceKathy was had a hugely successful corporate career in change delivery for 35 years. In the last 4 years she has run her own coaching business working with senior leaders and with women who want to transform their experience of work.Kathy talks about something which might not be immediately obvious as being about wellbeing but which is having a huge influence on our own mental and physical health and that of the people who work for us…The subject of masculine versus feminine energy. We learn how this is not gender specific (we all have both), and how it can provoke a lot of emotion and pushback from both men and women. We hear about how after many years of operating in an aggressive environment, a heart attack made her realise that an imbalance of energy can ultimately lead to burnout, and mental and physical illness. Katy shares with how being able to use both energies gives you: · A much broader spectrum of approaches, behaviours, ways of being which complement each other (feminine creativity with masculine ability to implement them) · It enables you to connect with a much wider circle of people rather than those who respond to one type of energy · It makes life less stressful: often when we are struggling with something its because we are in the wrong energyWe learn about the pros and cons of each, the facts and myths surrounding each, that there is no right and wrong, good or bad, and how each can and should have its place.Kathy shares with us five specific business areas where we can start introducing more masculine/feminine energy balance. We learn about when we care and nurture ourselves and those around us then we actually produce better work. We are more creative and innovative, more efficient and productive and the research that backs this up. And we discuss what is stopping businesses and ourselves believing it.

Using the book, Seeing with Jesus: Developing A Worldview Shaped by the Gospels, by Jack Glasgow, members from our church have prepared daily devotions offering insights, discoveries, and yes, sometimes questions. This week, our devotions correspond with Chapter 2, Seeing with His Disciples. Today's devotion is from Kathy Coleman. Instrumental music is performed by Alan McArthur playing a piano arrangement of Be Thou My Vision. Steve Browne is a connector in every sense of the word. From a young age, he’s always felt at home ‘swimming in people.’ Today, Jennifer and Steve discuss what makes him a connector, and some of the unique insights he has as a leader and impact maker, including his involvement with the Society for Human Resource Management. Do you want to be the type of leader whose employees love them, and whose businesses thrive because of it? Find out how in today’s episode. Steve talks about how his mother’s suggestion took him from studying engineering into a more people-centric profession. When he’s with people, Steve feels like he’s home, right where he needs to be. He shares a funny story about college, where his classmates voted that he should be… you’ll never guess. You know how some people have ‘rules’ before they let you into their lives? Steve doesn’t, and he shares his philosophy on being an open book, and how it’s helped him make an impact on others. One of the big obstacles to leadership is when a person is an introvert. Jennifer asks the tough question: how can an introvert lead other people? Can they do it effectively? Steve believes so, and his ideas about introverts being stronger leaders might surprise you. Steve shares a harsh truth about being in the people management sector. However, if you’ve ever been an employee with a bad manager, you’ll be nodding your head along with him. He explains what it takes to be a great leader. Part of it has to do with understanding that ‘a tiger never changes his stripes’ and learning to work with those stripes. Kathy Coleman impacted Steve in a very deep way. She taught Steve that valuing the whole person matters more than only valuing what they bring to work. How do you allow your employees to grow personally, and how does that make them better employees? Years ago, one of Steve’s peers gave him a bit of advice that hasn’t left him, and it was delivered with a pointed finger to the chest. It began with Steve complaining endlessly about an organization. It ended with him leading that organization and creating a legacy that fulfills him to this day. The story will inspire you. Steve’s final lesson comes from his daughter’s basketball coach. What she did when his daughter didn’t make the team impacted Steve and changed his entire thought process for making people feel valued in all types of organizations. It’s a lesson that you can take with you, too. Kathy Coleman is probably best known as "Holly Marshall" on Land of the Lost (1974), a show which first ran on Saturday mornings on NBC from September 1974 to December 1976. Her straight bangs and braids, along with her red and white checked shirt and corduroys became her trademark. Holly was the first love for many who grew up watching the show. She married at age 18 and had two sons. She worked on her father-in-laws dairy farm in Fallon, Nevada with her husband for several years before they divorced around 1987, after which she moved back to the Los Angeles area.
