It's the size of a sesame seed, but it could cause unfathomable destruction to Australia's forests and urban canopy.A beetle called the polyphagous shot-hole borer (Euwallacea fornicatus) is silently spreading through Perth and its surrounds, forcing councils to chop and chip hundreds of trees — even century-old Moreton Bay figs.So how does the tiny pest cause such massive problems?

I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Monday morning, the 12th of May, 2025, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in the Book of Ecclesiastes 3:1-2:“To everything there is a season,A time for every purpose under heaven:A time to be born,And a time to die;A time to plant,And a time to pluck what is planted;…”Then we go to the Gospel of John 4:35. Jesus said: “Do you not say,‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest'? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest!”We are speaking today about seasons. What season are you in? In South Africa, we are going into winter. I know in Europe and in North America, they are going into summer. I love seasons, as a farmer, I really do. Every season is so special. We are in the autumn season at the moment in South Africa. The Americans call it the time of fall, the fall season, where all the trees are losing their leaves. They are a beautiful golden amber colour, rich in colour. The crops are golden for harvest. Jesus says, “Do not hold back. It is time to reap.” What season are you in at the moment? I know that Canada is a beautiful country, but it also can be very harsh for agriculture. Those men have to work because they have a hundred days to prepare their land, plant their crops, and harvest their crops before the snow. They need to look sharp.Don't waste the season that you are in at the moment. The Lord will use you in whatever season you happen to be in, and do not wish it away. I get so sad when I hear people say, “I wish this winter would finish” and then they say, “I wish the spring would get done with” and then “Summer, it is so hot. I wish the winter would come.” They are never happy. Every season is very special. Don't wish it away, but rather embrace it and enjoy it. Don't be afraid of retirement, madam. Sir, don't be afraid. It is an opportunity, a new opportunity to be used by God. I want to say to that young man, a faint heart never gained a fair maiden. If you love her, propose to her and marry her. What are you hanging around for? If you don't look sharp somebody else will marry her. I remember in London in the City Temple, I married no less than twelve couples in one night, and they came in their casual clothes. It is a service I will never forget as long as I live. I also remember standing in the stadium, the rugby stadium in Durban, at Kings Park, and saying, “To hell with El Nino” (that's the drought). I am going home to plant potatoes.” And I did.Have a wonderful day, Jesus bless you and goodbye.

Kooks, Shaun and Thala wrap up round 7 of the URC, which saw the Sharks beat the Stormers for the first time, the Bulls win in Connacht and the Lions narrowly losing to Munster. We start at Kings Park and reflect on the crazy finish and how the Stormers almost stole it, how great Kolisi, Esterhuizen and Fassi were and whether Kooks is selling his Dobbo stocks. We move to the Bulls beating Connacht and the big story of the game is Jake White's comments about Canan Moodie gaining weight. Shaun shares his theory about where those comments come from. We lament a missed chance for the Lions to pick up a big victory over Munster, but rave about Henco van Wyk's ridiculous solo try. We then preview the Champions Cup and try to predict which teams won't make the last 16. Find out why Kooks and Thala think the Bulls are well placed, why the Sharks first two weeks are super important and why the Stormers are in danger of being knocked out. In the Challenge Cup we think the Lions and Cheetahs have a good chance of getting to the knockouts. Finally we wrap with other rugby news, including Fiji men and Australia women winning the Dubai Sevens and the seismic transfer of Ilona Maher coming to Bristol Bears and why it's not part of a World Rugby conspiracy (at least this time).

Hey all! Welcome to another episode of Mr. P.'s Tales from the Road! In this edition, we take the long trip out to Long Island, New York to tour one the country's largest abandoned psychiatric hospitals, the infamous Kings Park Psychiatric Hospital. Once home to thousands of mentally ill patients who saw and experienced unknowable hells at the hand of Twentieth Century mental health treatments (lobotomies, anyone?), this massive complex offered up just a few of its mysteries to us as we explored a small stretch of its vast acreage. Tales and history abound, so warm up some leftovers from the Fourth of July, pour yourself a cold glass of ice tea, get comfy, listen in and enjoy the show! Joining us in the studio is none other than Matt, also known as the Wizzard of Iz—yes, with one Z! This urban explorer isn't your average adventurer; he's more like the Indiana Jones of abandoned spaces, except he trades the fedora for a Hawaiian shirt and the whip for a sense of mischief. In this mind-bending episode, Matt regales us with stories that sound like they're straight out of a Hollywood blockbuster. Picture this: playing high-stakes hide and seek with security guards, spreading Christmas cheer by leaving gifts for fellow explorers in the most unexpected places, and hosting a pool party... on the roof of Kings Park! Yes, you heard that right—nothing says "party" like a pool with a view of the city skyline and a side of trespassing. But wait, there's more! Ever heard of undercover cops masquerading as urbexers? Matt has, and he's got the inside scoop. Plus, he takes us behind the rusted bars of Cresson Prison, unveils the chilling mystery of the missing autopsy table, and recounts the harrowing tale of spending eight hours hiding in a closet, only to leap out of a second-floor window to escape an angry owner wielding a hammer. Talk about a great escape! And if you thought Matt's adventures couldn't get any crazier, think again. He'll share the unforgettable tale of how he accidentally chopped off his thumb at an abandoned power plant. Ouch doesn't even begin to cover it! So, grab your popcorn, buckle up, and prepare to be transported to a world where the extraordinary is just another day in the life of the Wizzard of Iz. This is one episode you won't want to miss! Dr. Tammy C. Owens of Skidmore College joins us to discuss her 2019 article "Fugitive Literati: Black Girls' Writing as a Tool of Kinship and Power at the Howard School." Having discovered a treasure trove of letters written in the early 1900s by girls at the Howard Orphanage and Industrial School, Owens was off on a journey to learn more. The research took her from the Schomburg Center in Harlem to Tuskegee University in Alabama and, ultimately, to the doorstep of the Kings Park Heritage Museum. What Owens pieced together was the story of young Black orphans forging connections and support networks through a unique institution known by some as the Tuskegee of the North. The letters she found tell personal and sometimes painful stories, often by the details which they leave out. Owens' research brings to light voices that are often overlooked or missing from archival collections. We hear her thoughts on the process, the historians and authors who inspire her, and the story of her life-changing day riding around Kings Park with Leo P. Ostebo. Further Research Owens, T. C. It's a case that rocked WA's legal community and etched itself into the State's memory. A toxic marriage on the rocks, allegations of phone tapping, gambling, cheating and murder. Multiple court cases. A family in pieces. On the evening of August 7, 2007, Corryn Rayney, a Supreme Court registrar and mother of two, went boot scooting. She was never seen again. A week later after a tip from the public, her body was discovered buried in Kings Park. Rumours spread like wildfire through Perth. Her husband, prominent lawyer Lloyd Rayney became the police's number one suspect. Their “prime suspect” as Detective Jack Lee told the media. It took a year before he was charged with her murder. What happened next, was truly astonishing. Former British Detective Superintendent Robin Napper joins host Tim Clarke to cut through the case of the State of Western Australia vs Lloyd Patrick Rayney. I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Friday morning, the 22nd of September, 2023 and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in the Book of Isaiah 64 and I am reading verse 4: “For since the beginning of the worldMen have not heard nor perceived by the ear,Nor has the eye seen any God besides You,Who acts for the one who waits for Him.”Then we go to 1 Corinthians 2:9-10: But as it is written:“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,Nor have entered into the heart of manThe things which God has prepared for those who love Him.But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.”This morning, we need to start to think out of the box. Write that down somewhere. We need to stop limiting God. You see, the Lord has many things planned for you and me, my dear friend, but the problem is, we do not give Him an opportunity to show us what He has planned for us. You know, we read that first scripture:“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,Nor have entered into the heart of manThe things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” We quote that quickly, and we don't always quote verse 10. You see, the Spirit of the Lord, the Holy Spirit is the one who gives us our game plan. Now, in order for Him to give us our game plan, we need to set ourselves apart so that He can speak to us. I want to tell you that every time the Lord has used me in any area which is much bigger than me (which is most times - I would never attempt such things in my own strength!) it has been when I have been fasting and praying.I remember going to a lake not far from our farm, Shalom, with a bucket of water and a one-man tent and I stayed there for a number of days until God spoke to me through His Spirit, and I clearly heard, “Go to the rugby stadium at Kings Park in Durban and book it for an event.” I was petrified but it was so clear. He never spoke to me audibly, I have never had that privilege, but He spoke clearly in my heart and through the scriptures, and the rest, as they say, is history.Today, lift up your eyes. Today, expect great things from God, attempt great things for God, as William Carey said, and you will be surprised, very pleasantly surprised, at what the Lord has in store for you.Jesus bless you and have a wonderful day,Goodbye.

Foundations of Amateur Radio When people think about and discuss my chosen hobby, amateur radio, there's often a perception that it's old men sitting behind a radio tapping on a Morse key, making beeping noises surrounded by all manner of imposing equipment, stacked thick and high in a tiny room that soon becomes too stifling to spend much time in. While such scenes might exist, often reinforced by old photos and messy radio shacks, any self respecting amateur will tell you that plenty of time is spent outside the shack dealing with antennas, coax and earthing systems, combined with pouring concrete, building, erecting and climbing towers and a myriad of other physical activity. My experience has shown that my own inertia bending acts often involve things like camping, portable operation in ever changing environments, throwing ropes into trees and recovering those later, erecting verticals, tying down squid-poles and other muscular movements like building temporary rotators lashed to the nearest utility vehicle to take advantage of a multi-band yagi that someone brought along to play with during a field day. The first time I really discovered just how lacking my stamina is, was in early 2014 when the FT5ZM DXpedition team to Amsterdam Island was in town. I had the pleasure of spending a day with a couple of team members showing off the sights of my QTH, Perth in Western Australia. In the middle of the city is Kings Park. To give you a sense of scale, at over 400 hectares, Perth's Kings Park is larger than New York's Central Park and London's Hyde Park. One of the attractions is the dual spiral staircase DNA tower. At 15m height, it's the highest viewing point in Kings Park offering 360 degree views of the park and the city surrounding it. Commissioned in 1966, the tower has 101 steps and has recently been refurbished. It derives its name from the DNA Double Helix molecule, which is how the staircases are arranged. One of my companions on the climb to the top was a sprightly amateur who's been licensed a decade longer than I've been alive. I marvelled when Arnie N6HC essentially ran up the tower when all I was able to achieve was puff my way up in his wake. Since then I've discovered that doing 24 hour contests, camping and other fun stuff now absolutely kicks the stuffing out of me, often requiring that I spend a day in a small dark room recovering with a blanket over my head. While my body shape and my callsign have things in common and my doctor continues to encourage me to lose weight, I can say that my recent visit to hospital, unexpected as it was, reminded me in no uncertain terms that I should look after myself, if only so I can actually participate in the next contest or camp-out. I'm not going to tell you what my fitness plan is, nor am I going to tell you to embark on one of your own, other than to ask, have you considered just how much of this wonderful hobby goes beyond keying a microphone or tapping a keyboard and consider just how safe you really are when you next climb up a ladder, tower or other height to fix an antenna? Speaking of health, I've been absolutely blown away by the incoming messages, offers of help, shared gallbladder emergency and post-operative experiences and more, from people whom I've known for years through to amateurs who took a chance to introduce themselves and wish me well. It wasn't until this week that I really understood that this community is rich in personal lived history, going well beyond the experiences I've had outside the hobby. I'm ever so grateful for your encouragement and intend to keep fighting to get well. It's going to take some time, but I'm looking forward to when I can next camp-out and not regret my life choices. So, get off your sedentary and go do something will ya? I'm Onno VK6FLAB

Welcome to another spooky week and this time we've got one of our favorite topics: Haunted Hospitals. Hospitals in general are....unsettling, at least to us, and when you add in some questionable histories and ghosties, that's one hell of a combo. Hope you enjoy our stories about the Norwich State Hospital and the Kings Park Psychiatric Center. Props to History Goes Bump Podcast for the killer content that's helped us out so much with our own research!
