Rob is joined by data literacy advocate and best-selling author, Kevin Hanegan, to discuss the vital role that data plays in our modern society, how we can use it to our benefit by focussing purely on what's important, and how factors such as AI and marketing may have a profound effect upon the way we live. KEY TAKEAWAYS Only by setting ourselves effective goals can we create the best objectives. When we have our mission solidified, we are able to ask the right questions to get us there. The world is filled with information - some useful, some not so much. The key is to hone in only on what is of value, and what we need. There will never be a substitute for humanity or the connection we feel to other humans. AI and farmed data will never truly be able to replicate this relationship. It's not enough to simply have the data in front of us. We need to diversify the way we conceptualise and read the data by utilising the many varied skill sets and talents of a diverse group of thinkers. BEST MOMENTS 'Whether its in our personal life or work, we're all exposed to news and information. Whether we know it or not our brains are getting tired of seeing it all' 'One thing we're not short of in the world today is information' 'It's the human element that's important' 'How do you find a treasure without a map?' In this episode of the Thoughtful Entrepreneur, your host Josh Elledge speaks with the Chief Learning Officer of https://www.qlik.com/us/ (Qlik), Kevin Hanegan. Qlik is a data and analytic company that helps clients make better business decisions based on the data collected. Qlik was developed when analytics started becoming popular in the 90's and there was a need for change from static data to real time data. There are typically three avenues businesses can take in regards to data usage, they are either using data correctly, using data incorrectly, or not using data at all and using intuition. Kevin explains that using intuition is not bad to use to make decisions, however, there needs to be a balance of intuition and data in a business. There can be unconscious bias while collecting data and that is not how data needs to be used. Kevin advises using methods such as the scientific method works well as you can test data to try to disprove it. However, if it cannot be disproved, it shows that it may be a valid source for business usage. Kevin explains that there is a culture within the workplace where challenging an opinion is not encouraged. This could be a downside because mistakes or new ideas could be found by challenging an opinion, ultimately leading to better business decisions. Kevin explains the ideal client for Qlik is anyone trying to make more sense of their data. When we hear the word "Data" the first thing we think of naturally is numbers. And so often we think that the "numbers" make the decision for us. The fact is the analytics and statistics only tell us part of the story and if the "input" is wrong up front, the resulting "data" will mislead us into making bad decisions. Kevin Hanegan author of "Turning Data Into Wisdom" joins us on this episode of A New Direction. Kevin is going to give you deep insights on how we need to be careful with the numbers we see in every day life. And take a close look at our biases when it comes to looking at the data and other errors we make with "data". Further Kevin and I explore how we misinterpret data and how we can be more conscious of our misinterpretations. In his book "Turning Data Into Wisdom" Kevin encourages to ahve a healthy bit of sketpicism. We should always question the results we are presented with on TV. In fact we need to get better at challenging the statistic rather than trying ot find ways to verify what we believe. Because that is bias. And when we are biased the last thing we are doing is "Turning Data into Wisdom" Whether that be for our lives or our business.
