Wild sheep matter, and so does selecting the future leadership of the Wild Sheep Foundation in our upcoming fall 2024 WSF Board of Director elections. Last year, we started something new by introducing the candidates, not only in print with their biographies on our website and mailed ballots, but with brief interviews on this podcast. We have four (4) current director terms expiring April 30, 2025. The Nominating Committee approved five (5) candidates for the fall ballot for these four open director positions. The fall elections open October 1, 2024, and close on December 15, 2024. New this year is a hybrid-style election process to make voting even easier. All WSF members in good standing will receive a paper ballot with a postage-paid envelope. Plus, members for which we have a valid email address will also receive their ballot and bios via email. You can vote by email or mailed ballot…but of course, only one ballot will be allowed per member. In alpha order, by last name, the 2024 candidates with recording time codes are: Bralli Clifford from Wyoming 4:09 Larry Johns from Nevada 15:54 Kevin Kehoe from Alaska 25:40 Kyle Stelter from British Columbia 35:57 Dr. Peregrine Wolff from Florida 46:50 Lastly, as a special thank you to all WSF members who vote in this fall 2024 election, our independent election vendor, YesElections, will randomly draw one name to win a WSF/Weatherby Bighorn Edition rifle package valued at $5,400. Read candidate bios and learn more about the Election and the Weatherby Bighorn Edition drawing on our Elections page. https://www.wildsheepfoundation.org/about/board-elections?utm_source=Podcast&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=podcast

Brothers Kurt and Matt Bland grew up in an entrepreneurial household as the children of Tom and Nancy Bland in Apex, North Carolina. As founders of Bland Landscaping Company (ca. 1976), at an early age Tom and Nancy exposed Kurt and Matt to the successes and the challenges of running a family business. As young men, the boys worked in every aspect of the homegrown business from field work to estimating and financial planning. Through the late 1980's, 1990's and early 2000's industry icons like Frank Ross, Kevin Kehoe, and Bruce Wilson were regular consultants for the Bland family. Exposure to these industry influencers afforded both Kurt and Matt the opportunity to explore new and forward-thinking ideas about the landscaping industry, at a time when industry maturity and consolidation was still spoken about in a future tense. The Bland family had an agreement that both siblings needed to gain managerial experience following college before returning to the family business, affording them the chance to learn and make a conscious decision to join the company if they chose to. Following his studies in Horticulture and Ag Business Management at North Carolina State University, Kurt moved to Fremont California and worked in management for Del Conte's Landscaping. Meanwhile, Matt studied Economics, Finance, and Accounting at North Carolina State University before going to work for IBM as a Financial Analyst. The two brothers worked briefly with their parents before Nancy became terminally ill and Tom retired in 2005. In 2012, the brothers set out on an intentional course they'd plotted as college roommates, with a goal of growing the family's legacy company into the leading provider of commercial landscaping services in The Carolinas. Their professional journey has taken countless unexpected twists and turns that provide a multitude of stories of their experiences leading this nearly 48-year-old business. What started as a part time endeavor from their parents' kitchen table is now the country's 52nd largest landscaping firm. As partners, the two successfully lead the executive team that is responsible for leading a team of more than 600 commercial landscaping professionals from nine locations around North Carolina. Since recapitalizing with Prospect Partners in 2017, they've gained significant experience in Mergers & Acquisitions, including successfully integrating four of North Carolina's leading commercial landscaping companies into the platform they have built. Kurt lives in Raleigh, NC with his wife and their Labrador Retrievers. Matt lives in Cary, NC with his wife, their two daughters, a cat, and an Australian Labradoodle. Both brothers have a passion for the outdoors and a lifelong love of boating and water related activities.

Kevin Kehoe is an entrepreneur and cancer survivor; co-founder of Aspire Software, and author of “One Hit Wonder - real life adventures of an average guy”. As the book highlights, ordinary people can do extraordinary things. During 30 years of consultancy work in landscape management, construction in snow and ice, Kevin saw a need for new software in these industries – current software lacked the ability to give the contractor everyday insight. He co-founded Aspire Software. Kevin explains 3 tips he would give someone about to start up a business: 1) People – the team you are going into business with are the most important – it's essentially like a marriage – choose wisely! 2) Capital – most people underestimate how much they need. 3) Hours – don't underestimate how much time setting up a business will take, and the impact this will have on your family etc. How would you cope with starting a business and then almost immediately going through a traumatic life event (in Kevin's case, incurable cancer)? “Cancer is a brutal unforgiving disease – just when you think you've made progress, it kicks you back in the teeth.” Has having cancer changed your perspective on life and business? “It's turned me into a hugger – I tell people I love them!” Kevin explains his perspective on resilience – “From a business angle, resilience is everything, especially in relation to start-ups. It is essential, especially early on. If you get the plumbing and wiring right at the beginning – the right people, the right service model etc., you don't have to tear down the house further down the line.” Resilience can be about taking things a day at a time, which is something you really learn, living with cancer. It's not all about grit, determination and gung-ho – that's not resilience. Sometimes it's just getting through the day, working through the tasks you've planned for that day. One manageable step at a time. How do you build a successful business? I had an amazing 1-hour talk with Kevin Kehoe a veteran entrepreneur that wrote a book on "real life" ABOUT: Kevin R. Kehoe (Scottsdale, Arizona, born in NYC) is an inspiring Author (“One Hit Wonder”), Aspire Software Co-Founder, Entrepreneur, "Risk Taking Maverick" & Cancer Survivor, who was born and raised in New York City, and lived most of his life in Southern California with stops in Florida and Texas, along the way. After doing small business consulting for 30 years, Kehoe's personal “One Hit Wonder” was co-founding Aspire Software in 2013, which was sold in 2021 to ServiceTitan. Kehoe is the grandson of Irish immigrants, oldest of six children, who has survived catholic schools and nuns, two marriages, six job terminations, motorcycle crashes, and Stage IV cancer. ONE HIT WONDER: The Real-Life Adventures Of An Average Guy And Lessons He Learned Along The Way By Kevin Kehoe Publisher: Izzard Ink Publishing Publication date: November 2021 Price: $22.95 / trade paper ISBN: 978-1-642-28072-2 THE ROAD TO SUCCESS IS PAVED WITH MANY ADVENTURES Entrepreneur Shares Lessons Learned In Business, Life, Love, And Travel Kevin Kehoe is a self-described average guy who has achieved the extraordinary through discipline, diligence, effort, and courage. In his autobiography, ONE HIT WONDER: The Real-Life Adventures Of An Average Guy And Lessons He Learned Along The Way, Kehoe tells of his successes and failures in a life that has spanned growing up in a large Irish Catholic household on Long Island, his aspirations to play pro football, his career as a successful entrepreneur and consultant, and his battle with cancer. Kehoe's adventures are written in thirty-seven chapters, each a separate event with some small insight about life, people, and business. Readers will laugh and cry; some might even see themselves. Kehoe believes that everybody shares many of the same experiences over the course of a lifetime. Despite inhabiting a planet crowded with more than seven billion people, there's a fairly narrow range of human behavior that makes what happens in day-to-day life somewhat predictable. “Without taking the time to examine who and what they are, and what they believe, people may shortchange themselves and miss out on the many opportunities life presents that can make one feel worthwhile and, ultimately, happy with themselves. The unexamined life is a recipe for the alternative,” says Kehoe. Kehoe has a love for all things business. When his daughter was seven, she defiantly pronounced, “You're not the boss of me!” He used an organizational flip chart from his consulting business to teach her, that yes indeed, he was the boss. And he teaches readers that everybody works for somebody. In 2013, Kehoe co-founded Aspire Software based on the belief that the landscape industry needed a completely cloud-based mobile platform. Prior to co-founding Aspire Software, he was a nationally recognized consultant for more than 35 years, including 26 years in the landscape industry at Three Point Group. During that time Kehoe, who was widely known for his sales system and benchmarking expertise, provided practical advice to more than 250 landscape contractors in the areas of sales and financial management, budgeting, and pricing as well as merger and acquisition. His friends describe him as a man who is humble and grounded with a clear sense of self, and who has used this ability and clarity to positively impact others and help them in their lives. With humor and irreverence Kehoe shares glimpses into his personal life including daring escapades, marriage, divorce, parenting, friendships, regrets, and dreams. He doesn't hold much back. Kehoe thinks deeply and takes people to places where they cannot go on their own. When things are important, he goes all in. He perseveres. He is living proof that an ordinary guy can accomplish the extraordinary. Told with humor and candor, ONE HIT WONDER is an uplifting read, drawing from a myriad of stories and anecdotes, that proves people have the power to determine their own fates by playing to their strengths while minimizing their weaknesses. # # # About the Author Kevin Kehoe has worked in the hotel, restaurant, business consulting, and software industries. We all know what a “one hit wonder” means in the pop music world. It refers to an artist who composed just one song and then disappeared doing little of worth the rest of their lives. Of course, this is not true and misses the all the times they almost made it as well as all the timers they failed. And it is these moments that make up a life and a legacy. In fact what's more likely, is in in the pursuit of a career, fame, or fortune, the artist wrote many songs, some of which they may have liked better than the chart topper that made them famous. I, like Paul McCartney (who was not the walrus), am not the one hit wonder that gives the book its title. The title comes from a chapter in the book about my entrepreneurial journey in building a company. Though this experience is a good one, it is not my only success, or even my favorite. But as with all my experiences I learned something about me, and about people and this lesson helped me navigate my life going forward. Each chapter is one of my adventures and the lesson I learned that became part of my rules for living and dealing with people and situations. This life-long process of doing taught me something about my knowing my strengths and weaknesses and helped me become the best man I could be. And the point of this process is very simple… leave the earth a better place than I entered it. This process is not unique to me. I did not create it. It has been practiced by many people throughout the centuries and is called the hero's journey or the path of the warrior. I am not trying to sound self or overly important. In fact, the opposite. I have had had lots or laughs, failures and screwups along the way. These experiences also taught me humility, so that when the good times and successes came, I was able to be grateful for them and handle them with humility. Go ahead. Pick up the book and turn the pages. See if you don't laugh, cry and maybe even learn some of the lessons I did… and in that process inspire those around you with life's possibilities.

Kevin Kehoe began his remarkable career as a fine art painter just a little over eight years ago. Though he had attended Art Institute of Boston, it would be another 30 years before he would pick up his paint brushes again. With the loving support of his wife, he abandoned a successful career in advertising to pursue fine art painting full time. Kevin refers to himself as a painter with a camera. However, his thoughtfully composed photos are merely a jumping off point for his exquisite, expansive paintings that stir the heart. His goal is not to simply render a photo into a painting. Rather, Kevin seeks to express his subject matter – as he puts it – “like an emotionally conjured image.” His paintings are about how he wants to recall a moment in time in his mind and heart. Struck by the epic and awe-inspiring vistas of the American West, his paintings often capture the wonder and wanderlust of the West. Kevin says of the West: “In short, it's where you lose yourself to find yourself… The West is good medicine.” Indeed, in this stress-filled world, Kevin Kehoe's magnificent paintings are just the right prescription and dosage we need of Western Therapy. Then, we discuss the remaining opportunities for those who are present and I reveal how you might 'beat the dealer'. And since Kevin says at every banquet, "you didn't come here to listen to me talk. Let's give away some prizes!", we spend the last 20 minutes talking about Wild Sheep Conservation and the goals of the organization. The first of many recorded conversations with Kevin Kehoe, President of the Alaska Wild Sheep Foundation. Reading/Music recommendation for this episode: Pittman-Robertson Act Discussions: Conservation - a pillar of this show. On this episode, Kevin tells us how the COVID-19 crisis will affect conservation organizations. We have some laughs, talk about the similarities between the pandemics that are currently effecting wild sheep and domesticated humans, and learn about a conservation organization that is thriving - the Alaska Wild Sheep Foundation. Our annual banquet is June 6th, 2020 at the Dena'ina Center and we will give away nearly 100 guns, 2 atv's, $20k in Optics, Auction off several dozen amazing hunts and prizes, and have a whole lot of fun! The pathogen M. OVI is affecting Dall sheep in Alaska. Contact the Alaska Wild Sheep Foundation to ask how you can help keep Wild Sheep on the Mountain. Also, Kevin encourages us to support the small businesses that will suffer through these trying times. Check out the AK WSF for the businesses that support conservation in Alaska. Consider supporting them as well as the small business sponsors of this production: Heather's Choice "Bootfuel" saves you 10% Jetech Inflatables Just tell Jim that Steve sent you.
