The Permission To Speak Freely podcast is an absolute gem in the world of military podcasts. From the very beginning, it is clear that the hosts, Damon and Damo, have incredible chemistry that makes this podcast incredibly easy to listen to. Not only do they keep listeners updated with current events and important information in the military, but they also offer great commentary and perspective on these topics. It truly feels like sitting down and having a conversation with friends who happen to be knowledgeable military leaders.

One of the best aspects of this podcast is its ability to seamlessly transition between discussing current events in the military and opening up about personal hardships. This combination creates a unique listening experience that not only keeps you informed but also emotionally connected to the hosts. You can't help but feel like you're right there with them, whether they're sharing a funny anecdote or getting vulnerable about their own struggles. It's refreshing to see such transparency from Navy leaders and it creates a relatable human journey that resonates with both military members and spouses.

For military members and spouses, this podcast is an absolute must-listen. The humor throughout the episodes will make you laugh, while the heartfelt moments may bring you close to tears. Most importantly, you will definitely relate to the experiences shared by Damon and Damo, as they navigate their own military journeys with authenticity and vulnerability. There's a sense of ease that comes from listening to these two transparent Navy leaders - knowing that your loved one is in good hands. They provide wonderful insights into various topics and leave you with ideas on how to better support your sailor.

On the other hand, one possible downside of this podcast could be its narrow focus on the Navy specifically. While it may provide valuable insights for Navy spouses and civilians alike, those from other branches of the military may not find as much relevance in some episodes. However, even those who are not directly connected to the Navy can still appreciate and remember the shared experiences and stresses that come with the active duty life.

In conclusion, The Permission To Speak Freely podcast is an exceptional military podcast that offers a perfect blend of informative content, personal anecdotes, and genuine connection. Damon and Damo's incredible chemistry shines through each episode, making it an easy and enjoyable listen. Whether you're a military member or spouse, this podcast provides valuable insights, relatable experiences, and a sense of comfort in knowing that your sailor is in good hands. Play Episode Listen Later Jun 2, 2025 151:01

Hosted by: Damon, Damon, & Tisha Guest Hosts: CMDCM Aaron Paul & YNCS (Ret.) Coby Turner Featured Guest: CMDCM Frank Jackson   In this week's episode of Permission to Speak Freely, the crew jumps straight into chaos—because why ease into anything?   We open with a wild Facebook post about a military divorce that involves a holiday party hookup, a surprise paternity reveal, and a woman wondering if she's still entitled to half her retiring husband's paycheck—even though the kid ain't his and the CO might be the father. Yeah… it gets there fast. And no, we're not making any of that up.   From there, the conversation pivots into the serious stuff: leadership, accountability, and the fallout from yet another high-profile scandal in the Navy. The crew breaks down what happens when people at the top forget who they're supposed to be—and what it means when everyone below them sees it happening. Guest, CMDCM Frank Jackson brings the heat with talk of Bathsheba Syndrome, Fat Leonard comparisons, and the quiet rot that builds when no one speaks up.   We also unpack a Reddit post that calls out toxic command climates, and instead of brushing it off, the crew actually leans in and listens. Add in a “do better” submission about LPO drama, some hard truths about the Chief season grind, and a little command identity crisis (spoiler: quarterdecks don't belong in office buildings), and this episode covers it all.     To have your “Do Better” reviewed on a future episode, please get in touch with us at ptsfpodcast@gmail.com   Keep up with the ‘Permission to Speak Freely' podcast on our social media and YouTube - https://linktr.ee/Ptsfpodcast     Additional Credits: PTSF “Theme Music” - Produced by Lim0

Episode 147 | "Choose To Change (Feat. LCDR [Ret.] James Sandifer)

Play Episode Listen Later May 26, 2025 156:41

About our guest: Lieutenant Commander (Ret.) James Sandifer, a proud native of Lumberton, Mississippi, served 30 years in the United States Navy. Rising from E-1 to Lieutenant Commander, he built a decorated career in air traffic control and leadership across multiple global deployments and operational theaters. Sandifer is a combat-tested veteran who supported Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, with tours onboard CVNs like the USS George Washington and USS Harry S. Truman. His military journey is rooted in faith, mentorship, and resilience. Now back home and running for mayor of Lumberton, Sandifer's “Choose to Change” campaign is focused on unity, youth empowerment, infrastructure reform, and restoring pride in the community.   About This Episode: In this episode, Damo, Tisha, and Aaron sit down with retired Navy Lieutenant Commander James Sandifer—Lumberton, Mississippi native and current mayoral candidate—for a candid and inspiring conversation about leadership, legacy, and choosing to change your community from the inside out. James reflects on his upbringing in a small Southern town, the values he inherited working hayfields and watermelon farms, and how that foundation set the tone for a 30-year career in the U.S. Navy. He opens up about early career missteps, nearly getting derailed during his first tour in Puerto Rico, and the life-altering mentorship that set him on a new trajectory. From rising through the ranks to Chief and ultimately retiring as a Lieutenant Commander, James shares the hard lessons he learned about leadership, ego, humility, and faith. He talks about earning respect in the air traffic control community despite being told he wouldn't make it, and how mentorship from both Black and white leaders helped mold his character. The episode also explores Sandifer's return home to a town that's seen population decline, economic challenges, and systemic neglect. He breaks down his “Choose to Change” campaign platform, highlighting issues like school district failures, sewage infrastructure, poverty, and racial division. But more importantly, he speaks on unity, youth empowerment, and what it truly means to serve after service. We also get lighter moments: push-up competitions on the campaign trail, his Waffle House order, and why Cuevas Fish House will always outrank Ruth's Chris in his book. These and more topics are explored in this episode.   To have your “Do Better” reviewed on a future episode, please get in touch with us at ptsfpodcast@gmail.com Keep up with the ‘Permission to Speak Freely' podcast on our social media and YouTube - https://linktr.ee/Ptsfpodcast       James' Book Recommendation: Chop Wood Carry Water (Joshua Medcalf) https://www.amazon.com/Chop-Wood-Carry-Water-audiobook/dp/B01MS3QS8K   Follow James Sandifer and his campaign for Mayor of Lumberton: @voteforsandifer (Linktree) https://linktr.ee/voteforsandifer?utm_source=linktree_profile_share<sid=c190aa3f-d12d-4be2-8009-1fef6f18fec1       Additional Credits: PTSF “Theme Music” - Produced by Lim0

What happens when a high-speed, cyber-savvy Senior Chief finally puts it in park? CTRCS Candace Esquivel joins us fresh off two decades of doing all the things—deploying nonstop, supporting special warfare, shaping policy on the Hill, and holding it down at N17 like it's the Pentagon's group chat. Now she's eyeing retirement and asking the real questions: Do I want a family? Should I adopt? Can I slow down without losing my mind? And why the hell do flowers die so fast? We get into the deep stuff—miscarriage, fertility, career identity—and still find time to roast the Chiefs Mess, crack jokes about uniform shortages, and break news about a raccoon in Ohio caught with a meth pipe. (You read that right.) It's honest, layered, and just the right amount of petty. A love letter to the women holding it all down, and a reminder that you're allowed to walk away even when you're great at what you do.   What We Talk About: •Life at N17 and what Sailors don't see behind policy •Deploying every year for 9 straight years •Why she's walking away at 20 years—and what comes next •Fertility fears, freezing eggs, and making space for motherhood •The realities of military pregnancy and miscarriage •Chiefs Mess culture—who's in it, and who's missing •What it means to “complete your mission” and still want more •And yes… a raccoon with a meth pipe in Ohio   About CTRCS Candace Esquivel: A Cleveland native and a member of the 9/11 generation, CTRCS Esquivel enlisted in the Navy in 2005. Her career spans deployments aboard the USS BUNKER HILL and USS BOXER, elite service with Naval Special Warfare Development Group, and cyber ops with Joint Cyber Operations Group. In 2022, she served as a DoD Congressional Fellow advising on cyber and defense policy. A graduate of the Navy and Joint Special Operations Senior Enlisted Academies, she holds a bachelor's in Management Studies and serves as a board member of The Valkyrie Project, championing female service members across the force.       Connect With Candace & The Valkyrie Project: •The Valkyrie Project •YouTube: Military Women's Symposiums •LinkedIn: Candace Esquivel       To have your “Do Better” reviewed on a future episode, please get in touch with us at ptsfpodcast@gmail.com       Keep up with the ‘Permission to Speak Freely' podcast on our social media and YouTube - https://linktr.ee/Ptsfpodcast       Additional Credits: PTSF “Theme Music” - Produced by Lim0

Damo officially welcomes Aaron to the team as a researcher. The guys discuss leadership tempo, mentorship, and the challenges of balancing personal fitness goals with operational commitments. Damo vents about his frustration with lunch meetings interfering with his only real chance to hit the gym, prompting a candid discussion about whether Sailors have enough time to PT at their own pace. What about “bad day chits”? The guys talk fitness standards, empathy in leadership, and the importance of creating space for real conversations with Sailors about well-being. Damo's hype, because he has his first mentee in years.  He opens up about working on his End of Tour award and questioning whether it's necessary. The two reflect on award culture, personal recognition, and the moments where impact matters more than accolades. That conversation bleeds into a funny but honest admission: ChatGPT might be making Damo a worse writer, at least when putting pen to paper. Damo shares a personal story of a shipmate who was isolated by leadership after an alleged incident.  They also touch on recent inspections at the barracks, emphasizing the need for genuine accountability and not just cleaning up when leadership visits. What's the Navy's policy on bracelets? Aaron asks a real one: how do you correct a Chief with a jacked-up uniform? The guys answer a few questions from listeners: from whether the culture can change, to who would win a war between Snipes and Supply, and how the Navy applies (or ignores) the idea of “One Team, One Fight.” A few recent headlines are discussed: SECDEF's “No More Walking on Eggshells” policy, removal of transgender servicemembers, and DoD efforts to reduce the number of flag officers. They also discuss reports of fighter jets lost from USS Truman and troops allegedly detained during a DEA nightclub raid in Colorado. Damo blames Aaron for the cliffhanger, and the episode closes with Aaron's “Do Better” reminder: don't just go through the motions when it comes to training because your people deserve more than that. AS1 did a tour with the Blue Angels and detailed his experience. What is the margin for error for a Blue Angel? AS1 details his “hardest day” as a Blue Angel. How does an AS with the Blue Angels compete for evaluations? After the Blue Angels, Justin did an IA tour in Bahrain; he broke down the mission. Justin was in Bahrain during the “Day of Rage,” which doubles as one of his worst experiences in the Navy. AS1 details his initial reporting and check-in experiences on the USS Bonhomme Richard (BHR) in 2019. He also gives us a new term: T.E.D.S - Typical Enlisted Dudes. AS1 just so happened to be in the off-going duty section the morning of the fire on the BHR. Fresh off completing his PRT, Damo kicks things off by sharing how it went down. How did LCDR Bonner earn the call sign “Siri”? Why did he choose the path from enlisted Sailor to officer? Frank dives into his journey, from growing up in South Central L.A. and dispelling common misconceptions about the neighborhood in the 90s to breaking barriers as he transitioned into the Navy.   LCDR Bonner also reflects on his time as a recruiter in one of California's wealthiest areas, sharing how he overcame challenges and thrived in the role. Throwing it back, Frank recalls the days of Blackberrys, his time as a DJ at Howard University during hip hop's blog era, and his impressive rise from Junior Enlisted to Chief, Chief to Officer, and Officer to Howard before returning to the Wardroom. He opens up about adversity in flight school, the unique dynamics LDOs navigate early on, and how the internet has reshaped the sense of community within the military.   Other highlights include Frank's favorite Navy moment, advice for maintaining a strong relationship during deployment, and a lively debate on whether Chiefs should be technical experts. DCC Cody Osgood came by to discuss the life of a Recruit Division Commander (RDC) at Naval Station Great Lakes. He went from an E5 to an E6 while stationed in Great Lakes. Cody begins by discussing why he joined the Navy. Damo goes left and gets on his soapbox very early in this episode. Cody returns to his story, detailing how he initially felt about being an RDC. Is RDC “C” School as difficult as people claim it is? Does RDC School fault a person for not being “hard” enough? What are some of the common misconceptions of being an RDC? What happens when a Recruit tries to fight an RDC? Do Drill Instructors pick the roles they want to play before they get a “Push”? Are RDCs to blame for newly reported Sailors who don't seem to understand basic military customs and courtesies? What does it mean to make a Sailor live out of their seabag? Cody talks about making a decision that he now regrets to turn a recruit in the right direction. Cody responds to a question from a listener regarding the ASVAB. Damo asks Cody to “fact-check” some of the reported incentives for an RDC. Cody discusses the challenges of his integrated push. How was the experience of “pushing boots” during Covid? What changed after Covid? What is financial literacy training for a Sailor in Boot Camp? Has Cody ever had personal feelings regarding a Recruit, whether good or bad? What's a normal day for a division of recruits? What's the purpose of the 12-minute meal time for a recruit division? How are RDCs evaluated? Cody details the craziest Great Lakes story that he remembers. What is I.T.E? Is Great Lakes getting soft? How do RDCs choose the RPOC?  Cody speaks on whether he would do another tour as an RDC. Navy Boot Camp is now 10 weeks long, but why? How is Warrior Toughness being inculcated into recruits? What's the real deal with recruits being able to use their cell phones?  Cody gives a “Do Better.” How easy is it to quit Navy Boot Camp? Cody details his favorite thing about being an RDC. Damo asks the pod what are things they wish they would've known before they went to Boot Camp. Why do people seem to get so upset about changes when it comes to boot camp? Why do Sailors have to shave on leave? How real does it get at the Navy Ball? Do we always have to speak to the people that didn't make it when we congratulate the people that did? No Damon, No Problem. LOL. Don't tell him we said that. If you listened to our Women's Panel earlier this year, we know you're familiar with YNCS Ashley Williams. We appreciated her story so much, that we wanted to bring her on again. This time, she's standing in for Damon as a guest host! Last week marked the 80th anniversary of D-Day and the 82nd anniversary of the Battle of Midway, two major moments in naval and American history. Happy Pride Month y'all! Have you ever checked into a command and thought, how the hell has this place survived for so long? Damo is his own “Do Better” this week with a personal conversation with Ashley and Tisha. This leads to a conversation about the “hero syndrome.” Do leaders in the Navy have a tendency to sacrifice their health for the sake of others? Ashley, Tish, and Damo discuss if Chiefs lost their impact and potential reasons why this might be the case. Tish addresses an error she made in a previous episode. Since Dr. Fauci is being honest, can we? Comments and questions from listeners are read and discussed. Should an “End-of-Tour” award take account of the Sailor's full career or just the duties they performed at that command? Ashley shares a sea story about dealing with adversity and having the right people in your corner. Retired four-star Naval Admiral and former Vice CNO, Robert P. Burke was recently arrested and is facing 30 years due to a bribery scheme for a position at a company. Damo brings up “respectability politics” regarding military members making the wrong judgment calls. A Command Senior Enlisted leader is in the news for being relieved due to using unauthorized Wifi on her ship and covering it up to the Commanding Officer.
