Stopping to smell the concrete, an injection of inspiration fuel into the tank, and creating different stews. Kelly Finnigan (Monophonics, Kelly Finnigan) Kelly Finnigan “A Lover Was Born” Vinyl- https://www.coleminerecords.com/products/kelly-finnigan-a-lover-was-born "Distance as a measure of time and place informs Kelly Finnigan's, A Lover Was Born with a grit and grace that turns passion into virtue. The latest solo release from The Monophonics frontman roots itself in the best traditions of midwest soul labels like King, Curtom, Dakar, and the Bodie Recording Company. A Lover Was Born is a testimony that these deep cut grooves are not resigned to nostalgia, instead, they are at the burning heart of longing and hope. The journey Finnigan takes listeners on over Lover's eleven tracks echo the state of motion and growth since his solo debut, The Tales People Tell (2019). These two records bookend a prolific period of output, including a pair of Monophonics albums, a Christmas album, a mixtape, and a full slate of producing and engineering (The Ironsides, Alanna Royale, the Sextones). “There's nothing like making records,” says Finnigan. “It feels like that's my purpose — the reason I was put on this earth.” Written in California, Ohio, and Staten Island, Kelly Finnigan collaborated with old friends in and outside the studio. “I enjoy working alone but it's not how you want to make a record…almost everybody I brought in for this album I've worked with, toured with or spent a great deal of time with.” Max and Joe Ramey (The Ironsides), Jimmy James (Parlor Greens), Sergio Rios (Orgone), Joey Crispiano (Dap Kings) and Jay Mumford (aka J-Zone) all contribute to the overall sound of A Lover Was Born. Dramatic influences like Isaac Hayes (check out the piano on “Be Your Own Shelter”) and Jerry Ragovoy are chopped and folded into Northern Soul uptempo numbers to create stompers like “Get a Hold of Yourself” or “Chosen Few”. Finnigan's take on Deep Soul is captured brilliantly on “Walk Away from Me” and “Love (Your Pain Goes Deep)”, while Boom Bap pervades on hard hitters “His Love Ain't Real” & “Cold World”. Slower songs such as “Let Me Count the Reasons”, the emotional “All That's Left”, and the soul-stirring album closer “Count Me Out” show the honest and tender side that has become Finnigan's calling card. All the while, the voice is raw and earthy — in the best tradition of R&B shouters like Otis Redding, Lee Moses, and David Ruffin. The songs on A Lover Was Born reconfigure the spliced and sampled DNA of hip hop (extracted by crate diggers like Dilla and RZA) to create something new, underscoring both the spectrum and depth of soul while making a case to the timelessness of Finnigan's sound." What happens is that you have arts and environment initiatives popping up all over the place, but everyone's pitted against one another in competing for the same grants, right? So it makes it extraordinarily difficult to organize, to strategize, and to act with a collective insight about where it is that we need to go and how we can really mobilize the power of the arts. This episode is a lot of fun. When I arrived at No 9 Gardens near Kingston, Tanya Kalmanovitch and her dog Finn were ready to go for a soundwalk on a sunny June 26th 2024 at 7.15am. My previous conscient conversation with Tanya was recorded remotely in June of 2011 (see e53 kalmanovitch – nurturing imagination) where we talked about music, ethnomusicology, arts education, the climate emergency, arts policy and how artistic practice can nurture imagination. Our second conversation, equally as engaged and dynamic (but this time in person, and outdoors), picked up on some of these themes with a focus on the impact of Tar Sands Songbook, a documentary theatre play that tells the stories of people whose lives have been shaped by living in close proximity to oil development and its effects. I had the pleasure of seeing Tanya perform the Tar Sands Songbook at Carleton University (with thanks to Ellen Waterman) in Ottawa and wanted to ask Tanya how it went, and in particular, what it's like to tour a show about climate change through art, in Alberta. Tanya wears many hats: she is a violist, an ethnomusicologist, and author known for her breadth of inquiry and restless sense of adventure, including an interest in improvisation, social entrepreneurship, and social action, such as being the mission circle lead of the Sectoral Climate Arts Leadership for the Emergency organization or SCALE which by now, regular listener will know : a network of artists, cultural practitioners, and arts organisations committed to addressing the climate emergency and environmental injustice. As we walked in the wet fields of No9 gardens I love how Tanya doesn't hold her punches: ‘The end of the world as we know it' is also a biased perspective, when you say that phrase, right? I'm pretty sure that the earth will keep going and it'll just sort of shake us off like some fleas; the dog scratches the fleas off and it will regenerate. The field where we walked was mushy so you'll hear of that rich dampness in the recording and our boots and running around of Finn the dog. You'll also hear, near the end of our conversations children's entertainer Mr. Rogers, where Tanya sings : It's you I like, not the things you wear, not the way you wear your hair. It's you I like. The way you are right now. The things down deep inside you. It's not the ear inside you. It's not your toys, they're just beside you…I like you just the way you are, Tanya. Thanks for the full circle walk. We had a lot of fun and so did Finnigan.Note: I inserted 5 second silences throughout the recording to give some space to the soundwalk.  *END NOTES FOR ALL EPISODESI've been producing the conscient podcast as a learning and unlearning journey since May 2020 on un-ceded Anishinaabe Algonquin territory (Ottawa). Unlock the mysteries of the housing market with Eric Finnigan, our esteemed guest and VP of Research at John Burns Research and Consulting. This episode peels back the layers of how immigration, the “lock-in” effect, and our shifting work culture are reshaping where we live and invest. Eric, a seasoned expert who's weathered the storm since the 2007 financial crisis, breaks down the economic tango between homeowner decisions and market fluctuations. Engage with us as we parse through the entangled web of homeowners clinging to low mortgage rates, regional inventory shifts, and how the convenience of remote work is influencing the American dream of homeownership. Then, we tackle the looming "silver tsunami," sifting through the facts and fiction about the anticipated wave of homes flooding the market as baby boomers pass on. Eric provides a fresh perspective on the generational battle for housing, evaluating the financial prowess of boomers and the impact of their decisions on market dynamics. We also zoom in on the home builders' crusade against zoning and development challenges in their mission to bridge the 2 million-unit housing gap. By the episode's end, you'll have gained a robust understanding of the economic forces at play and the potential directions in which the housing market could pivot, grounded in the wisdom and foresight of a distinguished market watcher.Nothing on this channel should be considered as personalized financial advice or a solicitation to buy or sell any securities. The content in this program is for informational purposes only. Have you ever made a promise to change your life? Sometimes that promise takes us on a journey where we'll come out better on the other side. This episode talks about rites of passage. I'm super excited because next week I get to gather with my family to celebrate my nephew Finnigan's Confirmation. It's a religious and social milestone; similar to events like a bat/bar mitzvahs or quinceaneras. The occasion is a chance to fully commit to being in a community and belonging to something bigger. I'm here to spend quality solo time with you for EP162's Wise Walk as we discover our True Stride. One of the cool aspects of a public commitment is doing it in a setting where you feel supported. Anytime we're going through a rite of passage or say “Yes” to a commitment, there may be challenges. Connecting with others during this time can really give us the strength to show up for ourselves. On our Wise Walk, I talk about the meaningful life milestones, like rites of passage. Everyone gets to witness and honor the ability to say “Yes” to your rite of passage. Come with me as we reflect on these Wise Walk questions: What stage of life are you currently in? Where do you have an opportunity to express a commitment publicly? What choices are you currently making in life that deserve that public commitment? Can you take time to celebrate your public commitments? As you go through different rites of passage, you'll unlock experiences that open new versions of what it means to show up for yourself. Own the phase of life or transition you are in. Shine light on your rite of passage with these Wise Walk questions: What is one thing that you're working on and really proud of? Who do you want to be surrounded by as you explore your rite of passage? As you go on your rite of passage, is there an example you can pull inspiration from for guidance? How will you act on the inspiration you gain from the example? Join this inspiring community to uncover a new sense of freedom, and be sure to follow and review the True Stride podcast as we continue to exchange our light and Heart Value with each other.   In this episode: [00:23] - Welcome to the show! [02:36] - What stage of life are you currently in? [04:03] - Mary Tess recalls rites of passage she experienced while growing up in a Catholic community. [06:58] - What are you working on?
