In this episode of Architecture, Design & Photography we sit down with Michael DiTullo, Founder and Chief Creative at Michael DiTullo LLC. We discuss Michael's latest work designing acoustic panels for Kirei, his time working with Michael Jordan at Nike, and his creative process when approaching design challenges. We really enjoyed our discussion with Michael and hope you do as well. Michael DiTullo has been designing iconic products for some of the world's biggest brands for more than 20 years. He has worked with Nike, Google, Honda, Timex, Chantal, Converse, Motorola and has been collaborating with Kirei since 2019. Prior to starting his eponymous design studio Michael, was Chief Design Officer for Sound United, parent company of Denon, Marantz, Polk, and Definitive Technology, where he oversaw industrial design, UX, packaging, product management, and marketing creative. He also spent several years as creative director for frog design's San Francisco studio and nearly a decade at Nike where he worked directly with Michael Jordan, Carmelo Anthony, Derek Jeter, and Dwayne Wade. DiTullo has sat on the ascensions board to SFMoMA, the board of directors for The Design Foundation and is a strategy advisor to Offsite, a disruptive take on design education. Michael's work has won numerous awards and has been printed in publications like Metropolis and Wallpaper. He has been featured in the books “Dieter Rams: As Little Design As Possible” and “Breaking In” and has published his own book “365: One Year Of Design Sketching Every Day”. In 2017 DiTullo founded “Real Designers Ship” and organization dedicated to celebrating designer's whose work makes it into production. It’s often been said that workplace culture happens whether you intend it to be there or not. That may well be true, but if you have a particular type or tone of culture in mind, it won’t build itself. It’ll need help from you and other leaders in your organization. This is one of the key ideas that John Stein, owner of sustainable design materials company, Kirei, spoke about with me recently. John created the company 18 years ago and generously shares some of the highs and lows of growing his own workplace culture. Starting with a laid back attitude of “make it cool, and cool will follow”, John soon realized that he needed to be more intentional. This meant that he had to work at culture each day, just like operations and finances. For him, being intentional means telling people what your culture vision is and then offering guidelines for behaviour, because core values alone don't take care of culture. This episode is jam-packed with real life examples and tips for building workplace culture from the ground up in a small business. As a sustainability warrior building a sustainable business, John’s story also demonstrates how hard it can be to pursue something with conviction, and yet how satisfying it can be when you stay the course. Bcom, Kat and Leo return with reviews of weeks 3 and 4 of the Spring 2018 anime season for the 10 shows we chose to follow in our seasonal first impressions episode. This episode clocked in a bit longer than we expected, at just under 3 hours, because we dove deep into these shows looking to give you the best rundowns and insights possible. Honestly though, it’s really because we spent like 25 minutes on Doreiku. I don’t think there’s ever been a show covered by this podcast which the hosts disagreed on more strongly. Neither Busou Shoujo Machiavellianism nor Tsuki ga Kirei drove hosts to this kind of madness. Leo literally put on Rintarou’s labcoat from Steins;Gate and did mad scientist experiments to establish new theories to explain why Doreiku is actually just a grand social experiment.
