They can philosophize about the moments that made them love sports and the life lessons that the world of sports taught them. It isn't often that we get a guy on the mic whose biggest accomplishments on the wrestling mat might still be in front of him.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with Nate Jackson, a two-time All-American wrestler at Indiana, a current assistant coach at Princeton wrestling, and a founder and president of the Black Wrestling Association (BWA). We spoke with him by phone Thursday. The founding of the Black Wrestling Association is a direct product of the mass anti-racist uprisings in America and the world following the murders of Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, and other Black people. This led to several Black wrestlers including Nate Jackson having discussions about how to respond. "We were kind of called together, brought together through tragedy. So after the Ahmaud Arbery murder, we sought different ways on trying to bring awareness to Black men and Black people in general being brutalized in our country through overt racists," he said. Then on May 25 George Floyd was murdered, with the excruciating scene captured on video which was seen by millions around the world. That led to a series of protests, which are still ongoing, against racism, white supremacy, and police violence and murders, which have had the widest support and participation than any such protests since at least the 1960s and perhaps even more than occurred then. For Nate Jackson and the Black wrestlers with whom he was already speaking, more decisive discussions took place. "George Floyd's murder was a paradigm shifter, especially in public discussions, just because everyone that I talked to and that I saw around the Internet, everybody reacted the same way. Everybody was in shock," he said. Now the circle of people participating in these discussions widened. "We devised a call. And on that call there was about 60 other wrestlers of influence, wrestlers that we thought should be on that call. And this call was facilitated by myself, and we had moderators, most of the founding members. And we had just open discussion," he said. "And at the end of the call, guess what? We all felt exactly the same about these issues. And in feeling the same, we had a responsibility to do something. "So after that call came and went, the founding members -- myself, Kerry McCoy, Kevin Jackson, J'den Cox, Kenny Monday, James Green, Gabriel Townsell, B.J. Futrell, Kyven Gadson, and Mark Hall -- we decided to create the BWA. "And our mission is to inspire, to connect, empower Black wrestlers and allies to grow wrestling through representation, equality, and opportunity," he said. That was in June. In the brief time since, the Black Wrestling Association has been developing plans to build and strengthen its organization. We discussed more of what those plans are; how they plan to use their platform as wrestlers to change wrestling and the world; how Black wrestlers need more representation in what is "a pretty insulated sport"; how they are involving some of the Black wrestlers of the past as well as college and high school wrestlers while creating role models for the youth; working to grow the sport of wrestling while striving to do all this; the priority of involving women wrestlers in the BWA; the sad recent passing of wrestling legend Carlton Haselrig; and much, much more. Heavy WeightOn this episode, Ben Askren and Matt Dernlan will break down the Finals of the World Team Trials. Askren doesn't waste any time jumping right into his opinion on Gable Steveson vs Adam Coon in the Heavy Weight Finals. some people picked Steveson to beat Coon but not in the dominant fashion he did. Dernlan says if you had no frame of reference you would think Coon was the 18-year-old college wrestler and Steveson was the recent graduate who has proven their abilities at the senior level. Coon felt the most comfortable wrestling upper body with Steveson but once he sensed danger he tried to get out of bounds. Overall Steveson ran through the World Team Trials in such a way no one could have predicted. 97 kg (8:36)Kyven Gadson took on Ty Walz in the best 2 of 3 finals with Gadson getting the win in two close matches. Askren and Dernlan agree Gadson has proven himself to be a clear number two at this weight class as Kyle Snyder has proven himself a clear number one. 92 kg (10:29)Bo Nickal beat Michael Macchiavello first match by tech fall and second match 5-0. Dernlan talks about how Macchiavello attempted to slow it down in the second match but still couldn't get any offense going. The set up of Nickal vs J'Den Cox at Final X is one of the most anticipated and exciting match ups.86 kg (14:39)Pat Downey gets a flurry at the end of match number one and then holds off Nick Heflin in the second match to get the win.79 kg (16:13) Alex Dieringer dominates NCAA Champ Zahid Valencia getting two tech falls in the finals. Dernlan talks about how Dieringer was definitely injured last year and how he made a big-time statement this year with his dominance. Askren thinks 100% Kyle Dake vs 100% healthy Dieringer will be a scrap and it'll be super interesting to see how these two approach their Final X match up. 74 kg (18:10)One of the most anticipated finals came at 74 kg Isaiah Martinez vs Jason Nolf. Imar dominated the first match and the majority of the second match but Nolf was able to get a head pinch at the very end and come up big to send it to a winner take all third match. Imar wasn't rattled and remained focused and got the tech fall in the third match. 70 kg (23:30)Anthony Ashnault goes down in the first match and is forced to injury default out of the second giving James Green the win. James Green was on a mission throughout this tournament to show the separation he has from the rest of this weight class and just how good he is.65 kg (24:16)Zain Retherford beats Jordan Oliver in two 7-6 matches. Askren talks about the strategy behind deciding when to challenge a call and when to not. Overall these two matches were so high level and technical by both guys especially during the first period it is hard to believe Oliver won't be moving on to Final X.61 kg (30:48)Tyler Graff beats Cody Brewer in this high scoring final. Askren breaks down the controversial referee calls. Dernlan talks about something they've talked about all Folkstyle season which is the importance of the referees understanding wrestling and not just making black and white calls.
Yianni Is Living in the MatrixOn this special live broadcast Ben Askren and Matt Dernlan breakdown all the wrestling from the U.S. Open leading up to the finals and make their predictions for the finals. The first topic they jump into is someone everyone is talking about, Yianni Diakomihalis. Diakomihalis has had an amazing tournament thus far highlighted by his tech fall over Jordan Oliver. It’s exciting to see considering Diakomihalis hasn’t had many opportunities to show what he can do in freestyle. Askren and Dernlan break down his mat and body awareness. The 65 kg final between Diakomihalis and Zain Retherford will be one of the most exciting matchups of the entire tournament.65 kg (15:18)After talking about Diakomilhalis vs Retherford, Askren and Dernlan discuss other key matches that went down in the 65 kg bracket. One great match was Joey McKenna vs Dean Heil. Heil came up big with two, four point moves in the second period getting the win 12-9. Heil then only had 15 minutes until his next round match against Jordan Eierman. Askren says in order to save time and allow more time between matches they should consider getting rid of challenge blocks before the quarterfinals.57 kg (21:07)The first match they break down is Nathan Tomasello vs Thomas Gilman that ended with Tomasello cautioning out in the second period. Askren was surprised at how dominant Gilman looked after Tomasello tech falled his way to the semifinal match. Tomasello and Gilman always had very competitive matches in college. They go on to talk about Daton Fix. They point out how many tournaments Fix shows up to which is a lot more than most wrestlers.61 kg (25:35)Askren and Dernlan give credit to Joey Palmer making it all the way to the semifinals as a fairly unknown wrestler. He got past Tyler Graff in the quarterfinals which is a very tough task. Another wrestler Askren highlights in this bracket is Beau Bartlett. Bartlett is a high school junior and ended up finishing 8th place beating some notable collegiate wrestlers.70 kg (29:02)Ryan Deakin has been on a storm through this star-studded bracket. Deakin was Dernlan’s pick as a guy that could be a major disrupter at NCAAs but he faded off during the NCAA Championships. He’s been showing the world what he can do in Freestyle and will face James Green who beat Jason Nolf in their semifinal matchup.74 kg (32:54)Isaiah Martinez has been hammering everyone on his way to the finals. He faces Thomas Gantt in the finals. Askren says the most interesting thing about this weight class is to see what the wrestlers at non-Olympic weight levels decide to do.79 kg (35:02)Askren coached Nick Becker who’s wrestling out of Askren Wrestling Academy. Becker dropped to Chance Marsteller and now he will face Matthew Finesilver in the third-place match. Marsteller faces Alex Dieringer in the finals. Askren predicts Dieringer going down to 74 kg and Marsteller going up to 86 for the Olympics.86 kg (35:43)Pat Downey beats Myles Martin in the semis 9-7. It was all Martin in the first period up 7-0 but wasn’t able to hold off Downey in the second. Downey faces Nick Heflin in the finals.92 kg (38:03)Hayden Zillmer has been really impressive all tournament but he has a tough task in the finals against Bo Nickal. Askren calls for fireworks in the finals and wants to see how Nickal wrestlers a bigger wrestler in Zillmer.97 kg (38:43)One of Dernlan’s top wrestlers, Ben Honis has made it to the finals and will face Kyven Gadson. Honis beat Ty Walz in the semifinals. Walz is a guy many thought could give Snyder a run which shows how good Honis is.125 kg (40:03)Adam Coon made his way to the finals as expected and he’ll face Anthony Nelson.

No cheeky intros. No elaborate song lyrics sprinkled through. Today, it’s just wrestling. I’m Jason Bryant and this is Short Time Shots, a sometimes daily rundown of the day’s wrestling scores and more. There will be more on the AWL in other episodes, since this show concentrates on the college levels of the sport. Highlights though were Jordan Oliver knocking off Zain Retherford, Alex Dieringer beating Isaiah Martinez, Cory Clark beating Tony Ramos and Kyven Gadson giving a very short interview after he beat Jacob Kasper to get to the hospital, where he had a baby on the way - like literally any minute. All those results on Trackwrestling. Check the daily newsletter at mattalkonline.com/news or the @mattalkonline twitter for links to the recaps. In Las Vegas, as always, there were some solid upsets and individual wins. Ohio State put six into the semis, so that’s the short version. All that can be viewed at Flowrestling. But here’s some of the quarterfinal notables from Friday in Lost Wages. Notables from each weight: At 125: North Dakota State’s Brent Fleetwood stormed into the semifinals with back-to-back wins over Louie Hayes and Zeke Moisey. He’ll face top-seeded Sebastian Rivera of Northwestern, while down low, it’s a 2-3 matchup with Minnesota’s Sean Russell facing Oregon State’s Ronnie Bresser. At 133: Pittsburgh’s Micky Phillipi upended Minnesota’s Ethan Lizak 4-0 in the quarters to reach Saturday’s semifinals. He’ll face second-seeded Luke Pletcher of Ohio State, while up top, it’s No. 1 Nick Suriano of Rutgers and No. 4 John Erneste of Mizzou. Erneste is 3-0 with three first-period falls. At 141: Second-seeded Jaydin Eierman gave up a reversal and then outlasted Michigan’s Kanen Storr 3-2 in the tiebreakers. Eierman will see a familiar foe, Illinois’ Mikey Carr in the semis. Up top, it’s one vs. four with Joey McKenna of Ohio State meeting Northern Iowa’s Josh Alber. Storr, by the way, knocked off Chad Red of Nebraska in the Round of 16. All-American Red was bounced out of the tournament in the consolations. At 149: Clarion’s Brock Zacherl upended All-American Grant Leeth and his neckbrace 3-2 in the quarterfinals courtesy of a third-period takedown. Zacherl will face Micah Jordan of Ohio State in the semis, while fifth-seeded Mitch Finesilver of Duke reached the semis after beating All-American Max Thomsen of Northern Iowa 3-2. Finesilver will face Rutgers’ Anthony Ashnault. At 157: The on-again, off-again Griffin Parriott is on again. The Purdue sophomore beat All-American Tyler Berger of Nebraska 4-2 in the quarters and earned the right to face fifth-seeded Taleb Rahmani of Pittsburgh. Rahmani beat Eric Barone of Illinois, who had previously bumped off Ohio State’s Ke-shawn Hayes. Down low, it’s Kennedy Monday of UNC against Ryan Deakin of Northwestern. At 165: Michigan’s Logan Massa seems back in his Super Saiyan Level 3 form. He breezed into the semis and will face fourth-seeded Isaiah White of Nebraska. Just so you know, while looking up the correct spelling of Saiyan, I got distracted by the Dragon Ball wiki. Where were you when you first watched the Namek saga? Down low, Mekhi Lewis of Virginia Tech upended red-hot Branson Ashworth of Wyoming 3-1. He’ll face Northern Iowa’s Bryce Steiert in the semis. In just three short minutes, the Planet Namek … that was the longest three minutes in television history. At 174, all top four seeds reached the semis as Michigan’s Myles Amine will face Nebraska’s Mikey Labriola and Northern Iowa’s Taylor Lujan will face Missouri’s Daniel Lewis. At 184, second-seeded Taylor Venz of Nebraska was down 8-4 with riding time against in the third period when he countered a Nino Bonaccorsi shot by stepping over a chestlock and earning the fall. Venz will face sixth-seeded Drew Foster of Northern Iowa, who beat All-American Zack Zavatsky of Virginia Tech 9-6 in the quarters. Up top, Myles Martin of Ohio State has been rock solid. He’ll face All-American Max Dean of Cornell in the semis. Dean majored North Carolina’s Chip Ness in the quarters. At 197, unseeded Greg Bulsak of Clarion picked off Virginia Tech’s Tom Sleigh 8-1 in the quarters to reach his semifinal opponent, 10th-seeded Eric Schultz of Nebraska. Second-seeded Nathan Traxler of Stanford was upset by Virginia’s Jay Aiello early, then Schultz edged Aiello 3-2 in the quarterfinals. Up top, Kollin Moore of Ohio State is back in action after returning from the U23 Worlds. He’ll face Purdue’s Christian Brunner, the fifth-seed, in the semis there. Brunner beat Tanner Orndorff of Utah Valley in the quarters. Orndorff majored Drexel’s No. 4 seed Stephen Loiseau in the Round of 32. At 285 pounds, unseeded Chase Singletary of Ohio State pulled two upsets on his way to the semis. First he beat Northwestern’s Conan Jennings 6-5 in the Round of 16, then he pinned Central Michigan’s Matt Stencel in the quarters. Singletary will face Tate Orndorff of Utah Valley in the semis, while up top, Gable Steveson of Minnesota is almost to the point of going full heel turn as he bullied his way into the semis with some powerful bonus victories. Steveson will face North Carolina’s Cory Daniel in the semis. Team-wise, it’s Ohio State, Missouri, Nebraska and Northern Iowa leading the back, with a host of teams bunched between 5-13. Now to some duals, where we had two historical feats occur in Pennsylvania. First, unranked Princeton beat Lehigh for the first time in 50 years and for the first time ever at Lehigh. While the eighth-ranked Mountain Hawks aren’t even close to full strength, you wrestle with who you’ve got and on Friday night, Princeton got them. Patrick Brucki’s win over Jake Jakobsen at 197 sealed the deal for this one. Further west in Lewisburg, the first sellout in Bucknell wrestling history with over 4,200 fans present saw No. 1 Penn State extend its dual meet win streak to 47 with a 42-3 win over the host Bison. No. 7 NC State survived a scare as they went to Norfolk, Virginia and beat Old Dominion 16-15. This one was supposed to take place on Thursday, but a bomb threat at ODU forced the school to postpone women’s basketball and wrestling events. The rest might have served the host Monarchs well as Larry Early upended second-ranked Hayden Hidlay at 157 pounds. That offset NC State’s upset at 141, where Jamal Morris beat Sa’Derian Perry 7-2. Tariq Wilson’s bonus point at 133 proved to be the difference. No. 20 Lock Haven had over 2,300 fans at Thomas Fieldhouse watch the Bald Eagles pick up an EWL win over George Mason 28-10. Other action in Division I saw Indiana beat Northern Illinois 20-14 and Ohio beat Appalachian State 25-16. In the NAIA, Grand View extended its win streak to 66 duals in a row as they blanked Benedictine 56-0. Out in Great Falls at the Battle of the Rockies duals, which saw schools from Division II, the NAIA and the NJCAA, McKendree won three duals, as did Embry-Riddle. Colorado School of Mines won a Division II tri over Chadron State and San Francisco State. Other multiple-dual winners on Friday included Eastern Oregon, Lindenwood, Northwest Kansas Tech, Providence (the one in Montana) and Spartanburg Methodist. Looking at some other tournaments, Johnson & Wales leads the New Standard Corporation Invitational hosted by York College - the one in Pennsylvania. The Wildcats lead Ithaca, Baldwin Wallace and Roger Williams. Quarters kick up tomorrow, so there should be rowdiness. Couple of national champions meet in the quarters too, as Division III champ Jay Albis of Johnson & Wales meets Colton Messick of the Newport News Apprentice School, the returning NCWA national champion. Messick was coached by my old roommate, Matt Wright, at Warwick H.S. in Newport News, Virginia. Same one where Michael Vick - and my brother actually - graduated from. 12. (Editor’s note: This is always a rough draft of the script of the show, there may be minor errors sprinkled throughout and no, it’s not in APA style or anything that resembles a journalistic published work) SUPPORT THE SHOW If you'd like to support the Mat Talk Podcast Network and all the on-demand audio offerings, free newsletters and historical research AND you want to get some of that cool Compound gear, you can support this program by making a contribution to the network at patreon.com/mattalkonline.
