Ever wonder what it takes to not just endure but thrive in the world of competitive wrestling? Our latest conversation with Nick, a 2x NCAA national champion, peels back the layers of this demanding sport, revealing a saga of resilience and triumph. Throughout his journey, Nick's tale is woven with the strategic guidance of mentors, and the life-altering decisions that have sculpted his character and career. From the early days of grueling road trips to pivotal choices under the public's scrutinizing eye, we unravel the making of a champion.Nick's narrative is a primer on the transformation that occurs when an athlete melds purpose with passion. He opens up about the mental gymnastics behind the Champion by Design program and how it helped him bounce back from injuries and setbacks. His story takes unexpected turns, from a transfer to Rutgers to finding his stride again at Michigan, and ultimately, how acknowledging one's roots can be as important as the pursuit of gold medals. It's a tale that champions the strength found in vulnerability and the wisdom in seeking guidance, proving that the quest for greatness is as much about self-discovery as it is about victory on the mat.As we wrap up, Nick's eyes are set firmly on the horizon, where goals of international glory beckon. He shares his reverence for the environment in Arizona, his current training ground, and how it rejuvenates his spirit. His reflections on personal growth, shedding past limitations, and the transformative power of discipline in diet and mental training underscore the evolution of an athlete. This episode isn't just a chronicle of wrestling achievements; it's a playbook for anyone aiming to wrestle with their own ambitions and emerge a champion in life's arena. There are certain fall traditions in New Jersey, and one of them is upon us - the great Steve Politi is at the Ledger writing about Rutgers Football, as well as everything else in the world of sports in New Jersey.Chris was able to talk with this longstanding Jersey journalistic icon about some of the greatest moments in New Jersey sports history, about Arturo Gatti, what it was like meeting Nick Suriano, does the Ledger really have a Seton Hall bias?...... but most importantly we were able to discuss looking at New Jersey through the lens of sports. Why does Jersey respond so hard to certain stories? Why does it produce a certain type of athlete? Through these stories, can we help define the often hard to nail down reasons why Jersey is the way it is?Enjoy! Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. This week on @champandthetramp the boys welcome @coachgoodale on. If you’re a fan of collegiate wrestling you’re gonna want to tune into this episode. @coachgoodale is the former coach at Jackson Memorial High School where he coached 4 state champions. He then was offered the head coach position @ruwrestling in 2007. To say the wresting program at RU was struggling when he came on board would be an understatement. Undaunted, Coach Goodale accepted the challenge and completely turned the program around starting with his grass roots recruiting style. Under Goodale’s watch, RU has two individual national titles (Anthony Ashnault & Nick Suriano in 2019), three national finalists, 15 All-Americans, five conference champions (four Big Ten, one EIWA), 80 NCAA Championship bids, 32 Big Ten Conference Championships placewinners and 42 placewinners at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Championships. The program has tallied an impressive 183-79-1 dual meet record during his 14 years, “On the Banks.” @coachgoodale is such a humble guy and great interview and an absolute legend here in NJ. Thanks so much for coming on Coach ! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Don’t think I’ll be using that AirPod/Backpack Studio connection in the future, especially in the garage. My wife took slight exception to the note about the noise, but after nine and a half years of marriage, I still like to poke a little fun. I’m Jason Bryant, and this is Short Time Shots, a mostly daily look at the scores and more from around the world of wrestling. Anyone else hate Comcast? Not going down that rabbit hole. Dual Meets: No Division I action, but enough to chat about to make you want to order a 20-piece Chicken McNugget meal at 3:29 a.m. and ask them to put every sauce in the bag! Wait, sorry, flashbacks. And yes, I knew that in 2005, McDonalds on Columbia Avenue in Lancaster, PA started serving breakfast at 3:30 a.m. There’s only one way to discover that - the hard way.m I’ll start in D3, where third-ranked Wartburg remembered its fallen three-time national champion Kenny “Kennfucios” Anderson on Wednesday and then pounded Simpson (Iowa) 47-3. Kris Rumph, the guy who beat Iowa’s Gavin Teasdale over the weekend, yeah, he won by fall at 133. The win ran Wartburg’s win streak in the American Rivers Conference is now 215. St. Cloud State, which should be ranked No. 1 when the next Division II rankings come out, extended its win streak to 52 in a row and its conference dual win streak to 69 in a row after shutting out Southwest Minnesota State 42-0 at Halenbeck Hall in St. Cloud. Top-ranked James Barzowski topped Nathan Moore 10-3 at 157 pounds. Shippensburg knocked off Division III Waynesburg 35-12. The Red Raiders notched three falls, with the fastest coming from DeAndre Reed at 149 in 1:02. Northern State beat its Division III opponent, Concordia-Moorhead, 24-15 just across the Red River in Moorhead, Minnesota. Billy Holtan, son of longtime Mat Talk Podcast Network patron Bill Holton, picked up a major decision at 165 pounds in the Wolves’ winning effort. Going back to PA, Kutztown defeated Millersville 24-13. Moving south, Division II Belmont Abbey beat NAIA Bluefield 34-11 and Coker beat Truett McConnell 39-12 Division III Scranton won six bouts to knock off Division II East Stroudsburg 24-15 to win a Dundie. Don’t know what that is? That’s what she said. In keeping it D3, UW-La Crosse beat UW-Eau Claire 25-12 and UW-Whitewater beat UW-Platteville 27-12. Castleton beat Norwich 31-17 in New England. In the NAIA, Wayland Baptist beat Central Christian 45-12, Briar Cliff beat Northwestern (Iowa) 24-16. Lourdes beat Division III Defiance 29-14. I really should come up with more puns with Defiance. On the women’s side, Oklahoma City beat Texas Wesleyan 41-7 with Cierra Foster picking up a fall at 143 pounds in just 20 seconds. GET A FREE MONTH OF PODCAST HOSTING WITH LIBSYN There are approximately 66 active wrestling podcasts out there, with 20 of them on the Mat Talk Podcast Network. Sign up for Libsyn, at L-I-B-S-Y-N.com and use the promo code MTO to get your first month of podcast hosting for free when you sign up. That means you get the rest of THIS month and NEXT month free. They’ve got plans as affordable as $5 a month. TAKEDOWN CANCER It's time again to think about hosting a TakeDown Cancer event at one of your home meets, tournaments or youth events. TakeDown Cancer raises money for the Randy Shaver Cancer Research and Community Fund where over 91 percent of all money goes directly to research doctors and other cancer related projects. TakeDown Cancer is an all volunteer group with no paid salaries. TakeDown Cancer has raised almost $250,000. Please consider hosting an event. Go to www.takedowncancer.org for information or contact Mark Neu at mneu@shakopee.k12.mn.usLet’s TakeDown Cancer! - No one fights alone! Notables on the Docket for November 20: Pretty solid schedule across the board on November 20. In Division I, Missouri hosts Division II Central Missouri and NAIA Missouri Valley, while a pair of teams from out west head east. Oregon State heads to George Mason, while Air Force will face Hofstra. In Division II, a pair of newer programs will hook up as Urbana will face Bellarmine. In D3, we’ve got Manchester heading to Adrian, an all-Iowa tilt as Central faces Coe, while up in Wisconsin, UW-Stevens Point will face UW-Oshkosh. A pretty solid slate of duals in the NAIA, with Corban facing Simpson and Southern Oregon in a tri-meet, while Life Pacific will host Arizona Christian. Vanguard will also be in the house facing Arizona Christian. That’s a tri with three teams in the west all started in the past two years. Warner Pacific is at Montana State-Northern, Central Methodist heads to Iowa for a men’s and women’s double dip with Grand View. Grand View trying to extend its win streak to 79. The Vikings currently hold the second longest win streak in college wrestling history. If the math is right, the Vi kings won’t break the record of 92 this season. Doane is at Midland, Benedictine is at St. Mary and who knows what the heck is going on at Lindenwood-Belleville. Last I’d heard was the school was going to consolidate its sports with Lindewood’s main campus in Missouri. The women’s roster and coaching staff hasn’t been updated, yet the women are supposed to face MacMurray, while the men are allegedly facing off with Calumet College of St. Joseph. Keeping with the women’s schedule, Limestone heads to King, Adrian is at Tiffin, Simpson is also up at Southern Oregon with the men and Midland heads west to face Colorado Mesa. FROM THE DWN: Wyatt Henson, the son of Sammie Henson and a 2021 Iowa commit, was reportedly ruled ineligible for the postseason by the WPIAL, which is essentially the athletic association for Western PA. Henson started out at Waynesburg Central while his dad was the head coach a short distance away in Morgantown, West Virginia at WVU. IAwrestle posted about it, while PA Power is following up. Craig Sesker follows up on the story Trackwrestling posted yesterday, in which he believes freestyle should replace folkstyle. He writes this on The Predicament. Earlier this week, I posted about Anthony Ashnault and Nick Suriano of Rutgers getting the nod to attend the White House as NCAA Collegiate Champions Day. TheMat.com’s Gary Abbott confirms Penn State’s team championship as well as individual titlists Yianni Diakomihalis of Cornell, Drew Foster of Northern Iowa and Mekhi Lewis of Virginia Tech will also be in attendance. Penn State will be represented by Jason Nolf, Bo Nickal, Nick Nevills and Mason Manville along with Senior Associate AD Rick Kaluza. I say again, I don’t care about your politics. Next. Everyone’s favorite podcasting wrestling teenagers, Sam Herring and Jude Swisher, have added Mason Beckman to the Home Mat Advantage team. Lucky for Beckman, he can still pass as 15. Lots of conference awards being named, and again, they’re in the newsletter, but not all here. One that will be here today is from the South Atlantic Conference Carolinas, which is a hybrid collection of wrestling schools in those two conferences. Mount Olive, a first year program led by past Purdue All-American Jake Patacsil, had its first award winner as Hayden Waddell was honored as the Wrestler of the Week after winning the Star City Classic last weekend. Flowrestling is looking ahead to Iowa-Iowa State by looking back at the history of the series, giving us six reasons to watch AND trying to piss off Hawkeye fans by giving you the way Iowa State can win the dual. After hearing about Quant Wrestling on yesterday’s On The Mat, Trackwrestling drops a statistical breakdown by Quant Wrestling that breaks down various scoring attacks and analytics from the 2019 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. Stat nerds should love it. On The Network Inside Virginia Tech Wrestling talks with Hokies head wrestling coach Tony Robie about the upcoming trip to Washington, D.C. to accompany NCAA champion Mekhi Lewis on his visit to the White House. We also recap the win over Ohio State and the upcoming Navy Classic. You can get to read those stories and more from Mat Talk Online’s daily wrestling newsletter. It was Monday. It didn’t snow. That’s all you need to know. This is Short Time Shots, a mostly daily look back at the scores and more from the world of wrestling, I’m Jason Bryant. Oh, I bought a standing desk today. I’ll put it in the office when that finally gets done. Ever seen The Money Pit? Yeah, two weeks. Dual Meets: Six teams pulled notable upsets over the weekend, with Rider pulling the biggest, going into Minneapolis and beating No. 6 Minnesota 21-17. Even with some controversy over skin checks, No. 10 Lehigh knocked off No. 4 Oklahoma State 21-20 on criteria. No. 11 Virginia Tech went into Columbus and beat No. 3 Ohio State 21-15 and one that was overlooked by many was Michigan State beating No. 20 Oklahoma 21-16. Stanford topped No. 17 North Carolina 21-11 and No. 21 Northwestern scored a modest upset over No. 14 Northern Iowa 24-20. While behind the paywall at Flo, David Bray tracked down all the upsets he could find and counted up 38 individual upsets, including 11 wrestlers in the top 10 going down. Again, while I don’t link to the paywalled content from any outlet, if you have a FloPro subscription, that feature is worth reading, even if you like another outlet’s rankings. Also finally expect some shake-ups in the NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll this week as we’ve finally got some duals to shake out who’s legit and who’s just tough on paper. Tournaments One tournament of note saw Penn State win four titles, but Army West Point won the team title. The Nittany Lions wrestled half their starters, the Black Knights wrestled a ton of their roster. I get annoyed when I see tournaments “score” opens, but this was an invitational. Should the fact Penn State entered a team-scored tournament and not win it be relevant or should, as Clay Sauertieg puts it, have an asterisk? International Wrestling The U.S. finished second to Japan, losing 7-3 at the Women’s World Cup in Narita, Japan over the weekend. Japan showed its depth by using a number of athletes who have seen success at the age-group levels, but were more or less, senior-level unknowns. Adeline Gray, Jacarra Winchester and Tamyra Mensah-Stock were absolute beasts. As Americans, we are fortunate to be in a generation that’s seeing amazing growth in women’s wrestling and we currently have three dynamic athletes leading the charge on the senior level. Bill Farrell happened. Want to know what happened? It’s covered everywhere, so I don’t need to rehash it here. By the way, literally everything in the Short Time Shots is actually covered by a story that’s included in the Daily Wrestling News. I hit the key topics here, but the best way to be the most educated fan in the block or at the bar, is to go to mattalkonline.com/news and wake up every morning with the news of the day. Notables on the Docket for November 19: Tuesday is a typical dual meet day for the Ohio Athletic Conference and this Tuesday is no different as four duals take place there, all in Division III. Heidelberg, which you should know their nickname by now, takes on the Blue Streaks of John Carroll, Muskingum, they’re the Muskies, face Mount Union, which are the Purple Raiders, the Yellow Jackets of Baldwin Wallace, now sans hyphen, heads to Ohio Northern to face the Polar Bears, because that’s what you think of when you think of Ohio. Lastly, Otterbein, which is the more traditional Cardinals, will face the Fighting Quakers of Wilmington. In the NAIA, Graceland will face Baker, while Simpson (Calif.) will take on Lassen of the California Community Colleges. That’ll be the last dual officially scheduled for the teams out in the California Community College system as the state dual meet championship gets underway this weekend. FROM THE DWN: Andy Hamilton of Trackwrestling follows up the competition from the Bill Farrell Memorial with a Writing Time feature on who the man Bill Farrell was and his unique background and history in wrestling and sporting goods. Tom Housenick of The Morning Call in Allentown, Pennsylvania writes about the loss of a Nazareth wrestling family’s home in a fire. A GoFundMe has been set up to help the family of DeShawn Farber, with putting their life back together after losing pretty much everything. Just about every wrestling and MMA site has been covering this story, but two-time NCAA champion, four-time All-American and 2008 Olympian Ben Askren announced he was retiring from MMA today on Ariel Helwani’s MMA show. We just had a Greco-Roman event, which means Tim Hands from FivePointMove.com is on the case. Actually, it’s Monday, so that means Tim Hands from FivePointMove is on the case with his Monday Roundup, which he posts every Monday, as the name implies. I had this in Monday morning’s Daily Wrestling News, but it bears repeating here on the show, since TheMat.com also posted the announcement from the Sparta Independent that Sussex County Community College will be adding wrestling. They’ve hired former Centenary wrestler Chris Burdge as the first head coach. Burdge was a four-time Division III All-American from 2011-2014. Keeping things Jersey, NCAA champions Nick Suriano and Anthony Ashnault of Rutgers will be part of NCAA Collegiate National Champions day in Washington D.C. In other words, they get to go to the White House. You may now start your banter about the nation’s politics, but do that on your own time - I don’t care. Wartburg will honor the late Kenny Anderson, a three-time Division III national champion who passed away earlier this fall on November 20 in the Knights dual against Simpson College. Wartburg’s won 30 straight against the Storm. The weekly load of Wrestlers of the Week are starting to drop. You can get a ton of them in Tuesday’s newsletter. Finally, Dan Gable is the big cheese. Or in this case, he’s made of big cheese. File this under things you really don’t need to know, but you need to see, Go Iowa Awesome, a snarky, but often hilarious sports blog covering Iowa, shows us what Dan Gable looks like when he’s carved out of cheese. In Minnesota, it would have been butter. On The Network Nothing coming out other than this show on Monday, but the rest of this week, we’ll have shows from On The Mat, Rocked Up, ODU Monarch Matcast, Inside Virginia Tech Wrestling and possibly something from Hall of Fame Legends, but that might have to wait until the lull over Thanksgiving. If you don’t already know, the entire library of shows on the Mat Talk Podcast Network are at mattalkonline.com. Daton Fix PodcastOn this special edition of the RUDIS Wrestling Podcast, Ben Askren sits down with 4x Oklahoma State Champion, 2017 Junior World Champion, NCAA Finalist, 2019 Senior World Team Member, and 7x World Team Member Daton Fix. Fix holds many, many more accolades including the most recent Gold Medal at the Lima Pan American Games. Despite Fix’s reputation of winning, he didn’t start wrestling until 5th grade and had to catch up to the other kids who had been wrestling since they were 5. Fix says his dad was a great coach for him and set the foundation for him to succeed. He was told not to focus on results but on progression and if you do that the results will follow. He’s kept that mindset since and is something he claims has helped him throughout his career. Askren talks about how he can’t think of anyone else that wrestles in as many events, tournaments, or duals as Fix. They breakdown Fix’s decision to commit to Oklahoma State as well as his battle in the NCAA finals against Nick Suriano. Fix and Askren also breakdown his U.S. Open and Final X series with Thomas Gilman. Wrapping up the podcast Fix gives an inside look at his training for this year’s World Championships in Kazakhstan and Askren talks John Smith.
Olympic Red Shirt and Jr. WorldsThis episode Ben Askren and Matt Dernlan cover Yianni Diakomihalis / Zain Retherford arbitration process being dragged out, Mekhi Lewis taking an Olympic redshirt, Vito Arujau at Junior Worlds, and Collegiate rosters for next season. Askren and Dernlan First get into Yianni vs Zain. They believe by the length of time the arbitration process is taking that there will a wrestle-off. What the board is trying to figure out most likely is if they count the second Final X match for Yianni and the series is tied 1-1 or if they call it a nullified match and force Yianni to win two straight matches. They’ll also have to decide when the match will happen with limited time remaining before the World Championships. The next topic they discuss is the domestic battle in the U.S. at the 57kg weight class for the Olympics. The list of elite wrestlers filtering into 57kg is extremely long from Daton Fix, Spencer Lee, Thomas Gilman, Nick Suriano, to Tyler Graff, Nathan Tomasello, and the list goes on and on. For Daton Fix it’s extremely important for him to medal in order to put himself in a final wrestle-off for the Olympic team spot. They also announce they will be going LIVE on YouTube from the RUDIS Wrestling HQ this Saturday, August 17th as they watch the Kyle Dake vs Alex Dieringer wrestle-off. Lastly the breakdown Junior Worlds and the potential of these amazing wrestlers.
Current EventsThis episode Ben Askren and Matt Dernlan preview the 2019 World Team Trials. Askren starts the podcast by telling Dernlan how much he enjoyed Dernlan's interview with Anatoly Beloglazov on episode #55. Dernlan gives some insight on the interview and all the interesting pieces he took from it. Some news since the last podcast that has come out includes Jason Nolf moving up a weight class and Nick Suriano deciding not to compete at World Team Trials. Dernlan and Askren see such a great opportunity for Suriano to make the world team and don't know his reasoning why he is choosing not to wrestle. 57 kg (8:23)Dernlan gives an update on Nathan Tomasello's status and how he is choosing to take time off, heal his injuries, and return next year for an Olympic run. They also discuss the strict qualifying criteria to make the World Team Trials and how smaller brackets allow for less possible injuries. Askren and Dernlan agree the pick for this weight class is Thomas Gilman hands down. 61 kg (13:37) Askren picks by his performance at the U.S. Open Nico Megaludis will beat Cody Brewer in the finals and head to Final X to take on Joe Colon. Dernlan agrees with this pick especially with a best of three series.65 kg (16:55)The topic is brought up about where Jordan Oliver should be seeded. Askren breaks down why seeding matters and how much of a difference it makes. There is also rumors that say Oliver could jump up to 70 kg. Overall Askren and Dernlan picks Zain Retherford to get the win at World Team Trials.70 kg (24:20)Both Askren and Dernlan pick James Green to win.74 kg (25:20)In the finals, Askren picks Jason Nolf vs Isaiah Martinez with Martinez getting the win and heading to Final X. Dernlan talks about how Martinez is on a new level and has opened up a gap between him and the rest of the weight class.79 kg (27:58)Dernlan has Mark Hall breaking onto the Senior level scene with a win at World Team Trials. Dernlan has been a Honis supporter for a very long time and also picks him to win. 125 kg (38:55)With a surprise pick, Dernlan takes Gable Steveson to win the trials. Askren takes Adam Coon over Steveson.

New Wrestling DataOn this episode, Ben Askren and Matt Dernlan talk about Beat the Streets, as well as all the exciting upcoming events surrounding the podcast. Askren starts off with the news that he along with a handful of wrestlers from Askren Wrestling Academy have finished collecting data from the U.S. Open Wrestling Championships. Dernlan is surprised when Askren says that are a lot of similarities in the numbers when you compare the new data to the 2018 World Championships data. He thought there would be drastic differences in certain areas when comparing an international tournament to a domestic one. One interesting difference was under defensive scores, down block go behind went from being the number one at Worlds to number four at the Open. Another point brought up is if in the future they can breakdown the data round by round to see how techniques change from the level of competition being faced.Kayla Miracle (6:05)4x WCWA National Champ and 3x U.S. Open Champ Kayla Miracle stopped by Columbus before heading down to Dallas for the U23 Team Trials. Miracle has an extremely busy upcoming schedule. She will compete at the U23 Trials then the Senior World Trials, and then Final X.Giving Back (8:39)Dernlan gives his respects to Askren for using his platform to help grow the sport and bring a lot of eyes to a great cause that is Beat the Streets. Askren had every reason not to compete including being in the middle of training camp for his upcoming UFC fight but he chose to dedicate his time to shine a light on the sport of wrestling. Askren elaborates on his quick speech after the Jordan Burroughs match when he talked about supporting not only Beat the Streets but all of wrestling because it changes lives. Askren talks about all the ways wrestling can have an amazing influence on a young person. One example is having something in your life that challenges you and forces you to be better than you already are. Askren talks about how much wrestling has done for him and his life and that is the reason why he feels it is so important to give back.Beat the Streets (19:42)Breaking down the event Askren brings up the electricity in the air when Yianni Diakomihalis took on Bajrang Punia. He feels like you could replicate that energy every year if you did nation vs nation, for example, USA vs Russia. Another point is that this event showed beyond a few upsets that it really takes some time to develop at the senior level to rise to that elite status. Another impressive showing at BTS was from Jack Mueller. Mueller put on a clinic against Nick Piccininni winning 10-0. Mueller is qualified for the World Team Trials for being last year’s U23 world team member. The last match they breakdown is James Green vs Anthony Ashnault. It looked like to Dernlan that James Green had motivation due to the expectations of a competitive match that came from Ashnault dominating at the Pan American Championships.Nick Suriano vs Joe Colon (36:58)2019 NCAA Champ Suriano beats World Bronze Medalist Colon 3-1. Dernlan breaks down Colon’s game and how Suriano’s defensive style didn’t allow for Colon to execute where he’s best at. The question before Beat the Streets was how good is Suriano at Freestyle and while that question isn’t fully answered, he looked really good and it poses the next question will we see Suriano at World Team Trials? Askren doesn’t know why Suriano wouldn’t. He has beaten Daton Fix who he would face if he drops to 57 kg and now he has beaten Joe Colon if he decides to stay at 61 kg.David Taylor (42:44)31 seconds into his match against Drew Foster, Taylor suffers an injury and is forced to injury default in order to not cause any further damage. Everyone is hoping the injury was not serious and Taylor can continue his dominance at Final X. Dernlan talks about how the end goal is next years Olympics so if he has to forgo the 2019 Worlds in order to get healthy and compete for Olympic Gold he’s sure he would. Overall it was very unfortunate.J’Den Cox vs Patrick Brucki (45:26)Dernlan talks about how Cox might be one of the most under-appreciated wrestlers in the world. He is one of the best wrestlers to come out of the United States in recent years and has a resume that can stand up to anyones. On top of all of that he’s only 24 years old.Yianni Diakomihalis (48:26)It’s crazy to think about the last 8 weeks Diakomihalis has had winning an NCAA Championship, U.S. Open Championship, and beating one of the best wrestlers in the world at Beat the Streets. Askren and Dernlan discuss the levels Diakomihalis has already grown and to think he’s only 20 years old is amazing.
It has been just over a month since Anthony Ashnault and Nick Suriano were crowned national champions, and Rutgers Wrestling finished in the top 10 of the NCAA Tournament for the first time ever. Who better to discuss the success of the program and what's next, then Head Coach Scott Goodale. Coach Goodale joins Lance to break down last season, what the success does for the program moving forward, evaluating next year's roster, bringing back Donny Pritzlaff, how Rutgers will manage high expectations, and what it means to be a champion at Rutgers University. No cheeky intros. No elaborate song lyrics sprinkled through. Today, it’s just wrestling. I’m Jason Bryant and this is Short Time Shots, a sometimes daily rundown of the day’s wrestling scores and more. There will be more on the AWL in other episodes, since this show concentrates on the college levels of the sport. Highlights though were Jordan Oliver knocking off Zain Retherford, Alex Dieringer beating Isaiah Martinez, Cory Clark beating Tony Ramos and Kyven Gadson giving a very short interview after he beat Jacob Kasper to get to the hospital, where he had a baby on the way - like literally any minute. All those results on Trackwrestling. Check the daily newsletter at mattalkonline.com/news or the @mattalkonline twitter for links to the recaps. In Las Vegas, as always, there were some solid upsets and individual wins. Ohio State put six into the semis, so that’s the short version. All that can be viewed at Flowrestling. But here’s some of the quarterfinal notables from Friday in Lost Wages. Notables from each weight: At 125: North Dakota State’s Brent Fleetwood stormed into the semifinals with back-to-back wins over Louie Hayes and Zeke Moisey. He’ll face top-seeded Sebastian Rivera of Northwestern, while down low, it’s a 2-3 matchup with Minnesota’s Sean Russell facing Oregon State’s Ronnie Bresser. At 133: Pittsburgh’s Micky Phillipi upended Minnesota’s Ethan Lizak 4-0 in the quarters to reach Saturday’s semifinals. He’ll face second-seeded Luke Pletcher of Ohio State, while up top, it’s No. 1 Nick Suriano of Rutgers and No. 4 John Erneste of Mizzou. Erneste is 3-0 with three first-period falls. At 141: Second-seeded Jaydin Eierman gave up a reversal and then outlasted Michigan’s Kanen Storr 3-2 in the tiebreakers. Eierman will see a familiar foe, Illinois’ Mikey Carr in the semis. Up top, it’s one vs. four with Joey McKenna of Ohio State meeting Northern Iowa’s Josh Alber. Storr, by the way, knocked off Chad Red of Nebraska in the Round of 16. All-American Red was bounced out of the tournament in the consolations. At 149: Clarion’s Brock Zacherl upended All-American Grant Leeth and his neckbrace 3-2 in the quarterfinals courtesy of a third-period takedown. Zacherl will face Micah Jordan of Ohio State in the semis, while fifth-seeded Mitch Finesilver of Duke reached the semis after beating All-American Max Thomsen of Northern Iowa 3-2. Finesilver will face Rutgers’ Anthony Ashnault. At 157: The on-again, off-again Griffin Parriott is on again. The Purdue sophomore beat All-American Tyler Berger of Nebraska 4-2 in the quarters and earned the right to face fifth-seeded Taleb Rahmani of Pittsburgh. Rahmani beat Eric Barone of Illinois, who had previously bumped off Ohio State’s Ke-shawn Hayes. Down low, it’s Kennedy Monday of UNC against Ryan Deakin of Northwestern. At 165: Michigan’s Logan Massa seems back in his Super Saiyan Level 3 form. He breezed into the semis and will face fourth-seeded Isaiah White of Nebraska. Just so you know, while looking up the correct spelling of Saiyan, I got distracted by the Dragon Ball wiki. Where were you when you first watched the Namek saga? Down low, Mekhi Lewis of Virginia Tech upended red-hot Branson Ashworth of Wyoming 3-1. He’ll face Northern Iowa’s Bryce Steiert in the semis. In just three short minutes, the Planet Namek … that was the longest three minutes in television history. At 174, all top four seeds reached the semis as Michigan’s Myles Amine will face Nebraska’s Mikey Labriola and Northern Iowa’s Taylor Lujan will face Missouri’s Daniel Lewis. At 184, second-seeded Taylor Venz of Nebraska was down 8-4 with riding time against in the third period when he countered a Nino Bonaccorsi shot by stepping over a chestlock and earning the fall. Venz will face sixth-seeded Drew Foster of Northern Iowa, who beat All-American Zack Zavatsky of Virginia Tech 9-6 in the quarters. Up top, Myles Martin of Ohio State has been rock solid. He’ll face All-American Max Dean of Cornell in the semis. Dean majored North Carolina’s Chip Ness in the quarters. At 197, unseeded Greg Bulsak of Clarion picked off Virginia Tech’s Tom Sleigh 8-1 in the quarters to reach his semifinal opponent, 10th-seeded Eric Schultz of Nebraska. Second-seeded Nathan Traxler of Stanford was upset by Virginia’s Jay Aiello early, then Schultz edged Aiello 3-2 in the quarterfinals. Up top, Kollin Moore of Ohio State is back in action after returning from the U23 Worlds. He’ll face Purdue’s Christian Brunner, the fifth-seed, in the semis there. Brunner beat Tanner Orndorff of Utah Valley in the quarters. Orndorff majored Drexel’s No. 4 seed Stephen Loiseau in the Round of 32. At 285 pounds, unseeded Chase Singletary of Ohio State pulled two upsets on his way to the semis. First he beat Northwestern’s Conan Jennings 6-5 in the Round of 16, then he pinned Central Michigan’s Matt Stencel in the quarters. Singletary will face Tate Orndorff of Utah Valley in the semis, while up top, Gable Steveson of Minnesota is almost to the point of going full heel turn as he bullied his way into the semis with some powerful bonus victories. Steveson will face North Carolina’s Cory Daniel in the semis. Team-wise, it’s Ohio State, Missouri, Nebraska and Northern Iowa leading the back, with a host of teams bunched between 5-13. Now to some duals, where we had two historical feats occur in Pennsylvania. First, unranked Princeton beat Lehigh for the first time in 50 years and for the first time ever at Lehigh. While the eighth-ranked Mountain Hawks aren’t even close to full strength, you wrestle with who you’ve got and on Friday night, Princeton got them. Patrick Brucki’s win over Jake Jakobsen at 197 sealed the deal for this one. Further west in Lewisburg, the first sellout in Bucknell wrestling history with over 4,200 fans present saw No. 1 Penn State extend its dual meet win streak to 47 with a 42-3 win over the host Bison. No. 7 NC State survived a scare as they went to Norfolk, Virginia and beat Old Dominion 16-15. This one was supposed to take place on Thursday, but a bomb threat at ODU forced the school to postpone women’s basketball and wrestling events. The rest might have served the host Monarchs well as Larry Early upended second-ranked Hayden Hidlay at 157 pounds. That offset NC State’s upset at 141, where Jamal Morris beat Sa’Derian Perry 7-2. Tariq Wilson’s bonus point at 133 proved to be the difference. No. 20 Lock Haven had over 2,300 fans at Thomas Fieldhouse watch the Bald Eagles pick up an EWL win over George Mason 28-10. Other action in Division I saw Indiana beat Northern Illinois 20-14 and Ohio beat Appalachian State 25-16. In the NAIA, Grand View extended its win streak to 66 duals in a row as they blanked Benedictine 56-0. Out in Great Falls at the Battle of the Rockies duals, which saw schools from Division II, the NAIA and the NJCAA, McKendree won three duals, as did Embry-Riddle. Colorado School of Mines won a Division II tri over Chadron State and San Francisco State. Other multiple-dual winners on Friday included Eastern Oregon, Lindenwood, Northwest Kansas Tech, Providence (the one in Montana) and Spartanburg Methodist. Looking at some other tournaments, Johnson & Wales leads the New Standard Corporation Invitational hosted by York College - the one in Pennsylvania. The Wildcats lead Ithaca, Baldwin Wallace and Roger Williams. Quarters kick up tomorrow, so there should be rowdiness. Couple of national champions meet in the quarters too, as Division III champ Jay Albis of Johnson & Wales meets Colton Messick of the Newport News Apprentice School, the returning NCWA national champion. Messick was coached by my old roommate, Matt Wright, at Warwick H.S. in Newport News, Virginia. Same one where Michael Vick - and my brother actually - graduated from. 12. I found bags for the leaves. YES! It took about two and a half hours to clear the yard, but at least I got it all done before the rains came. I would litter this episode with lyrics inspired by Annie Lennox, but that’d be painful for you, just like walking on broken glass. This is Short Time Shots, a mostly unfunny podcast that recaps the day’s happenings in college wrestling. I’m your host Jason Bryant, and I have many leatherbound books and I do this kind of stuff for a living. Seriously. At the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open, here are the notables out there, but there are no more I love yous. Wisconsin’s Tristan Moran topped Northern Iowa’s Josh Alber in the finals by picking up a second-period fall at 141 pounds. At 149 pounds, Missouri’s Brock Mauller, who probably has THE wrestling name of the year, picked up a 12-6 win in the finals over Iowa State’s Jarrett Degan. Mauller beat Wisconsin’s Cole Martin to reach the finals. At 165 pounds, Evan Wick of Wisconsin beat Northern Iowa’s Bryce Steiert 3-2 in the finals in a matchup of All-Americans. UNI did see All-American Drew Foster major Iowa State’s Sam Colbray 14-0 in the finals at 184. New Cyclone Willie Miklus was solid with two falls on his way to a 5-2 finals victory over NAIA national champion Evan Hansen of Grand View in the finals at 197. Clarion Open Not a whole lot going on up at Clarion in terms of star-power, but notable performances were, well, notable. Eastern Michigan transfer Armando Torres captured the crown for Cleveland State at 133 pounds, beating Bloomsburg’s Lewis Williams 3-2 in the final. At 184, Michael Beard, who’s not on a roster this season but is bound for Penn State, topped NCAA qualifier Greg Bulsak of Clarion 13-9 in the finals. What’s also interesting is after building a 13-2 lead midway through the second period, Beard got hit four times for stalling and gave up nearfall late. What’s also interesting is since Beard isn’t on a college roster, his wins and losses don’t count. Nuance of an NCAA rules regarding official records say you have to be enrolled for results to count, even in opens. So all those guys losing to Aaron Brooks don’t have to worry about their record either. Speaking of Aaron Brooks … Heavyweight was an interesting weight as Pittsburgh’s Demetrius Thomas topped Division III national champion Jake Evans 14-4 in the semifinals on his way to the championship. Thomas was an NAIA national champion at Williams Baptist as a freshman and was second last year before transferring to Pittsburgh. He had to beat Seth Nevills, an unrostered soon-to-be Nittany Lion 9-7 in the second round. Cowboy Open Wyoming had a bunch of guys win, no biggie there. Junior world silver medalist and Penn State bound Aaron Brooks won at 184 pounds. He’s spending this year at the OTC. While it’s impressive for a kid like Brooks to come in and win a college open, let’s not get too carried away about his competition. He’s a blue-chip, can’t miss recruit, so beating a pair of Division II guys and an Air Force guy who hasn’t been their full-time starter yet shouldn’t be cause for alarm. He’s going to be good on the next level and his scores were impressive, but I wouldn’t consider this a huge test for him just yet. Michigan State Open Michigan State’s RayVon Foley was very solid in earning the title at 125, beating Central Michigan’s Drew Hildebrandt in the semifinals and majoring Michigan’s Drew Mattin 12-3 in the finals. Kanen Storr beat teammates in back-to-back rounds to pick up a title for Michigan at 141 pounds, while Penn freshman Anthony Artalona won the title at 149. Michigan’s got a real nice situation at 157 where true freshman Will Lewan topped All-American and teammate Alec Pantaleo 10-8 in the finals there. Lewan already stole a match in the wrestle-offs from Pantaleo, but let’s just be clear, there’s no way Lewan is starting this year unless something bad happens to Pantaleo. But man, that’s just impressive. Speaking of impressive, Darden Schurg, a Division III All-American from Wabash, came away as the champion at 174 pounds and he did it pretty impressively. After beating returning Division III champion Jairod James of Mount Union in the quarters, Schurg teched Oklahoma’s Anthony Mantanona before beating Northern Illinois’ Brit Wilson in the finals. Wilson had beaten Michigan State’s Drew Hughes in the semis, so - cliché warning - Schurg is ready to wrestle this year. And Wabash? They’re the LITTLE GIANTS! At heavyweight, Mason Parris pinned Central Michigan’s Matt Stencel in 14 seconds to win the title at heavyweight. Bruh. Here comes the rain again? More like here comes the PAIN again. Ithaca Invitational in Division III Returning NCAA Division III champion Ben Brisman of Ithaca won five bouts en route to the title at 141 pounds. Brisman topped Castleton’s Max Tempel 10-3 in the finals. At 184, a pair of All-Americans tangled as Ithaca’s Jake Ashcraft and Western New England’s John Boyle got reacquainted. Last year at the D3 championships, Ashcraft majored Boyle 12-2 in the third-place match. This time it was a 4-0 win for Ashcraft. Ithaca won the team championship with 167 points and four champions. You know what else is cool? Seeing a school win its first tournament title in nearly 40 years. That’s exactly what happened as Gettysburg crowned four individual champions to win the Messiah Invitational over host Messiah 110.5-97. Also of note, Andy Vogel, the head coach of Gettysburg and the man behind D3wrestle.com, is a Messiah alum. Champions for the Bullets, YES THE BULLETS, and not the crappy kind like the old Washington Bullets, were Robert Garnett at 141, Colin Devlin at 149, Colin Kowalski at 174 and Paul Triandafilou at heavyweight. That last name is easy for me - why? If I can say the Mongolians without an issue, Triandafilou is a walk in the park! York College, the one in Pennsylvania, won the Ned McGinley Monarch Invitational held at King’s College in Pennsylvania. They’ve got that Spartan Spirit as Sparty Gang Green won four individual titles for coach Duane Bastress. On to the dual meets! No. 2 Ohio State returned to the state of Maryland to take on Navy. The end result was a 28-9 win for the Buckeyes in a dual where Navy battled hard for most of the matches, but faded at the end of several bouts. Myles Martin’s a New Jersey native, but went to high school at McDonogh School, where the dual was held. Martin looked solid, picking up one of two technical falls on the night - the other came at 149 pounds by Micah Jordan. Joey McKenna needed a pair of escapes and a riding time point to get past Navy’s Nic Gil 3-2 at 141 pounds. McKenna was fresh off the plane after competing in Friday’s All-Star Classic in Denver. No. 7 Missouri blasted No. 15 Illinois 30-8 in the Grapple at the Grove, an outdoor event prior to the Illinois football game in Champaign. All-American Jaydin Eierman got past Mikey Carr 12-10 at 141 pounds, while true freshman Jake Elam, fresh off his silver medal performance at the Junior Worlds, beat Deuce Rachal 10-4 at 285 pounds. Illinois did have one bright spot as transfer Joey Gunther knocked off Mizzou’s Connor Flynn 4-1 at 165 pounds. No. 16 Rutgers cruised in three wins at the RAC in front of over 4,200 fans. The Scarlet Knight faithful saw the return of Anthony Ashnault to the lineup. The three-time All-American pinned all three of his opponents on the day, including returning NCAA qualifier Khristian Olivas of Fresno State. As far as the duals went, Rutgers beat Fresno State 30-6 and pounded Division III schools Johnson & Wales 38-5 and Centenary 48-3. Yes, Nick Suriano wrestled at 133 and yes, that’s where he WILL stay this year. If anyone tells you he might be going down at some point this year, that isn’t happening, folks. Trust me. In Division III, Washington & Lee got an overtime victory at 285 pounds by freshman Clay Chadwick to upend No. 11 Ferrum 20-15. Having grown up in Virginia and been aware of the Generals program for over 20 years, this is the biggest win I can remember in the program’s history. Congrats to Nate Shearer and crew in Lexington. Thomas More, yes, the Saints and we’re not talking about Val Kilmer here, picked up a 35-9 win over Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday. Can we talk about Elisabeth Shue, though? Seriously though, the match was the first dual in Kentucky Wesleyan history. Who got the school’s first wins? LaMont Wilson, Caleb Craig and Daniel Lopez did the honors for KWU. As always, results are available at the nation’s most comprehensive college wrestling scoreboard at almanac.mattalkonline.com and if you like this show, if you like the dynamic on-demand content of the Mat Talk Podcast Network, how about kicking a few bones a month in my direction to help continue promoting this great sport. Nick Suriano tough loss today in the 125pd NCAA wrestling final but you'll be back next year. I had Loyola of Chicago making the Sweet 16 so I have that going for me. Jets now have the #3 pick in the draft. Franchise QB on the way.
Friday night and I’ve gotta catch a flight to New York in a few hours. By the time you hear this, I’ll be snoozing away hoping a drink cart doesn’t slam into my knee or elbow. I’m Hall of Fame wrestling writer, broadcaster and announcer Jason Bryant, and this is Short Time Shots, a look back at the day’s scores and more from the world of wrestling. Before we get into the dual meet action, there’s a pretty good little tournament going on in California, the California Community College state championships. Fresno City leads after the first day of competition with eight wrestlers reaching the semifinals and leading second-place Mt. San Antonio College 98.5 to 80.5. Cerritos is a distant third with 54.5. All those results are at trackwrestling.com and check out John Sachs’ tech-fall.com for photos from the event. Count the tattoos, you’ll be there a while. Rutgers fans showed up in force, setting a school-record for attendance with 6,754 fans at the RAC, but key wins by Alex Marinelli at 165 and Joey Gunther at 174 lifted seventh-ranked Iowa to a 23-15 win over upset-minded Rutgers on Friday. Iowa won its 23rd straight conference road dual and improved to 4-0 all-time against the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers jumped out to a 12-0 lead after wins by Nick Suriano, Scott Delvechhio and Mike Van Brill, but then the strength of Iowa’s middle weights shone through, including Marinelli’s first dual meet victory coming against U23 World Champion Richie Lewis, who went up a weight from his expected competition weight of 157 pounds. Gunther fell behind early but a third-period takedown in the final minute plus riding time was the difference as he snatched away a victory from Joe Grello.5-4. Nick Gravina gave Rutgers it’s last lead of the bout with a win over Mitch Bowman at 184 before Cashtag Wilke and Sam Stoll closed the door on Rutgers’ upset hopes. Stoll finished off Razohnn Gross in 2:40 to end it. Nate Rotert’s major decision at 197 pounds and Alex Macki’s 7-5 win at 285 pounds broke a 16-16 tie and lifted No. 16 South Dakota State past No. 18 Central Michigan 23-16 in Brookings. South Dakota State’s Seth Gross continued to put up big numbers, earning a 16-2 major decision at 133 pounds, while 174-pounder David Kocher notched a convincing 10-5 win over C.J. Brucki in one of the dual’s key swing bouts. South Dakota State improved to 4-2. Navy dropped the first two bouts to Drexel, but stormed back to win seven of the next eight to power the Midshipmen to a 22-13 win over previously unbeaten Drexel. The Austin DeSanto watch is in full effect though, but he ONLY scored 13 points in a 13-6 win at 133. Solid wins checked in for Navy’s Nick Gil at 141 and Jadaen Bernstein at 174. By the way, Army-Navy football this weekend -- who you got? Michigan State went on the road and got past Buffalo of the MAC 17-16 on criteria three. True freshman RayVon Foley notched the biggest individual victory for the Spartans, an 8-6 victory in sudden victory over NCAA qualifier Kyle Akins at 125 pounds. Two major decisions were also key as Michigan State did lose a team point during the course of the dual. Overall, it was total match points that gave the Spartans the W. Fresno State put 3,700 fans in the seats on Friday night, but CSU Bakersfield won eight of the 10 matches as the Central Valley wrestling rivalry was rekindled. Sacred Heart won its first dual of the John Clark era, topping undermanned American International, a Division II school, 50-6. Eastern Michigan beat Cleveland State 29-13. In Division II, 10th-ranked Ashland topped West Liberty 24-13. Back to back falls in the middle by Bret Romanzak and Christian Price gave the Eagles some breathing room and wins by Tristen Wirich and Luke Cramer finished the dual off. Coker beat Emmanuel 21-11 in an ECAC matchup. Coker won the last four weight classes to earn the win over the Lions, who are actually searching for a head coach at the moment. Top-ranked Warburg, at least top-ranked for now, beat Cornell College 45-3. Eight of the nine victories were by bonus including falls by Bennen Doebel, Mike Ross and All-American Lance Evans. Sixth-ranked Messiah cruised past in-state rival Gettysburg 38-3. This one always stings for Gettysburg head coach Andy Vogel, who wrestled at Messiah. Yeah, the Falcons are pretty good typically. Mustache power was apparently the key for Heidelberg to knock off John Carroll 22-16 in Division III. Heidelberg, which if you may remember from the first editions of Short Time, is the STUDENT PRINCES. Wins by Patrick Brown, Tyler Hammack and Christan Climer at the upper weights gave Heidelberg 13 key points and the come-from-behind victory. Hammack earned the dual’s only fall in 92 seconds. No. 17 UW-La Crosse thumped Luther 34-4. Keep an eye on La Crosse 125-pounder Zach Villareal. He’s off to a real solid start . 14-0 with 11 bonus victories and eight falls. Illinois kid, contender. Mixing things up between divisions, we saw Division II Limestone get past a scrappy Southeastern University squad 21-16. Northwest Kansas Tech from the NJCAA upended NAIA Concordia of Nebraska 23-21. Cloud County won its first dual in program history with a 40-18 win over NAIA Central Christian. Also in the junior college ranks, Northeastern Oklahoma A&M swept Labette and Northwest College in a tri-meet on Friday night. The Karstetter brothers had a good night, going 4-0 as they combined for four bonus victories -- two techs, a major and a fall. NEO topped Labette 51-6, while they topped Northwest 47-4. The lone win for Northwest? Yup, Nodir Safarav, the Uzbek import.
