I sit down with 2022 US Bronze Medalist and Junior World Champion Isabeau Levito to chat about her career thus far! We talk about her start in skating, her coaching team, her timeline of learning jumps, her artistry and the dance classes she takes, competing on the JGP circuit last season, her Senior Nationals experience winning the bronze, her Junior Worlds experience, what she's excited about next season, consistency and goals, and a little bit on who Isabeau is.
In this 119th podcast episode of Dave Tate's Table Talk, Doug Heath and Adam Zevchik take a seat. In this episode, topics include: - What benefited Doug working as a shift worker (working nights and regarding recovery)? - Advice for someone who wants to double their current squat at roughly the same bodyweight. - Increasing strength while maintaining a low bodyweight. - How powerlifting has changed (comparing the 80s and 90s to present day). - Mental prep for big lifts. - What it was like training Buster Douglas when prepping for Mike Tyson. - And more! In September of 1976, Doug Heath met Louie Simmons at The Ohio State University. In Louie's mind, Doug was "strong as hell, but really eccentric, to say the least." In Doug's mind, Louie was the biggest guy he'd ever seen as a 20-year-old (traps to ears) and was enamored to be invited to train with Louie in his basement (before Westside Barbell existed) based on strength—deadlifting nearly 365, weighing 117 pounds. Two months later, Doug competed in his first meet. Fast forward to 1984, he won Senior Nationals with a 1306.2 total, weighing 132. Adam Zevchik, the newest elitefts athlete, trained under Doug for roughly seven years. Through Doug, Adam feels his powerlifting career took off after he learned the historical makeup of the sport and harnessed Doug's mindset. Adam was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio. He graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in sustainable plant systems with a specialization in turf grass science and a minor in business. He's the superintendent at The Golf Club at Little Turtle and manages the golf course and off-site landscape operations. As a multi-ply powerlifter of twelve years, he has one AWPC and three WPC world titles. He holds the junior squat record in the WPC at 148. He's ranked in the top-30 all-time at 148 and 165. Adam's most recent competition was APF Nationals (June 4th). On the 23rd edition of Home Mat Advantage Podcast, Sam & Jude recap all of the action that took place in Fort Worth, Texas last weekend. Recorded Dec 24th/
Yes, it’s late, it’s cold and I watched Elf tonight. That’s about all you’re going to get for a cheeky intro. This is Short Time Shots, your mostly daily look at the day’s scores and more in and around the world of wrestling. I’m Jason Bryant. Minnesota Beer of the Night: Last night, the Facebook Live crowd didn’t get to hear my lackluster review of a beer I didn’t really like that much, which was Tin Whiskers Orange Dream State, which was an orange cream ale. Have no fear, here’s a better review, at least, an improvement as it’s Bad Weather Brewing’s Immortal Toast, a coffee infused white stout. Yes, that is such a thing. It’s surprisingly awesome. New Patron: As a result of this thing going live on Facebook last night, we picked up another Patron, this one from Lauren Ruppert, the sister of one of my high school teammates and drill partners. What’s interesting is one of my other drill partners, Curtis Booth, lived up here for six months on a work contract. As soon as it snowed in November, he was out! He was about 2 miles from me - he came by the house last week before he left. Good stuff, Bull Island. This is one time you get mentioned in the media and it’s not an Allen Iverson documentary. She gets a glass, a shirt, some other free stuff, and of course, this shout out. “We’s gonna need some mohr wrassler’s on this heah football teem.” Dual Meets: No ranked D1 teams in action, but here’s what we’ve got from around the mid-majors. Gardner-Webb upended Franklin & Marshall 22-18 in a matinee dual in Boiling Springs, North Carolina. Even giving up a forfeit, the Runnin’ Bulldogs won six of the 10 bouts. Franklin & Marshall picked up a win over the first-year program at Presbyterian. The Diplomats beat the Blue Hose - yes, both of those are the schools’ actual nicknames - 38-9. In other first-year news, Appalachian State spoiled the Division I home debut of Little Rock 36-6 at the Jack Stephens Center. It’s effectively the Sun Belt championship as that all-sports league doesn’t sponsor wrestling. It wasn’t the first major college competition in the state of Arkansas, as Arkansas State had a team back in the 1950s, but it was the first Division I action as there were no divisions back then. Biggest matches of the dual saw Appalachian State’s Sean Carter beat Jaylen Carson at 125 and Codi Russell top Paul Bianchi at 133. App State’s Matt Zovistoski edged Jose Champagne 4-3 at 157. Upset of the night came in Edwardsville, Illinois as Justin Ruffin of SIUE knocked off returning All-American and fourth-ranked Larry Early of Old Dominion 3-1 in the tiebreakers at 157 pounds. ODU won the dual 33-9, but that win at 157 for Ruffin was the head-turner. Also in the MAC, Northern Illinois broke a 13-13 tie by winning the last three weights to top Kent State 23-13. In the NAIA, third-ranked Lindsey Wilson trounced fourth-ranked Marian 44-4 in a dual at Jeffersonville High School in Southern Indiana. Nothing yet from San Francisco State and Simpson, but San Francisco State did beat Southern Oregon 24-19 on Tuesday night. In junior college action, top-ranked Western Wyoming beat No. 11 Northwest College (Wyo.) 35-13. Keep an eye on this name, though for Northwest College - Majid Muratov. He’s a native of Uzbekistan who was 5th at the 2016 Junior World Championships at 84kg. Muratov is wrestling at 197 and picked up a 2-1 win in sudden victory three over top-ranked Tucker Tomlinson. Oh, how did the U.S. entry do that year in Macon? Zahid Valencia was 7th. Notables on the Docket for Thursday: Bloomsburg’s at Lock Haven in the MAC East (or the PSAC, whichever you prefer), Rider is right down the street at Princeton - loser buys at Hoagie Haven - while No. 20 Purdue will face SIUE. Drexel heads west to take on Cal Poly and No. 25 Stanford, while Kent State heads to Wisconsin to face the No. 8 Badgers - Mushroom, Mushroom. Yeah, old reference there too. In Division II, Lander heads to Belmont Abbey, while UW-Parkside heads over to Mankato to take on Minnesota State. Davis & Elkins will go into Pennsylvania to face Seton Hill. That’s the Griffins and not the one’s from Quahog. In Division III, I mistakenly read Thursday’s matches on the previous night’s Short Time Shots, so mistakes happen. By the way, it’s Mt. St. Joseph hosting a tri with Alma and Penn College. In the NAIA, Menlo heads to Southern Oregon. FROM THE DWN: After releasing the men’s freestyle seeds on Tuesday, USA Wrestling and TheMat.com has released the preseeds for this weekend’s U.S. Senior Nationals in Fort Worth in women’s freestyle. Top seeds are Victoria Anthony at 50kg, Dom Parrish at 53kg, two-time Olympic Trials champion Kelsey Campbell at 57kg, Maya Nelson at 62kg, two-time World teamer Forrest Molinari at 68kg, and Final X runner-up Precious Bell at 76kg. TransitionWrestling.com gives us the full entry list for Women’s freestyle at this weekend’s U.S. Senior Nationals. Timmy Hands at FivePointMove.com does another solid feature, this time on the return of RaVaughn Perkins to the Greco-Roman scene. It’s also time for Hands’ Q&A with WCAP’s Spenser Mango on Fort Greco. Purdue wrestling returns with the Always Aggressive podcast. No, that’s not on the network, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t listen to it. Nebraska’s HuskerMat, which produces the Big Mat Show, mostly on Rokfin now, does a free podcast episode with Mike Schadwinkel about his new book Purple Reign. And no, not like Prince. Brad Wilson of LehighValleyLive previews the Phillipsburg wrestling squad, one of the top programs in New Jersey. It’s also good to see Brad attending events again. He’d spent some time in the hospital and is back out in the gyms covering wrestling. Matt Levins of the Burlington Hawk Eye, that’s in Iowa, profiles the situation at Iowa Wesleyan University and how the school was on the brink of extinction, and now finds itself starting men’s and women’s wrestling programs and getting some help from Dan Gable. By the way, Wilson and Levins are both recipients of the NWMA Journalist of the Year Award in the past. India.com profiles 2019 men’s freestyle world silver medalist Deepak Punia. Did you know he was the son of a milkman? No, you didn’t. That’s not in the story, but just in case you were wondering. And yes, the Daily Wrestling Newsletter is GLOBAL. And down US 52 in Rochester, KIMT3 News talks with the Yellow Jackets of Rochester Community and Technical College - the one in Minnesota. Rochester’s news outlets do a pretty fair job of covering RCTC and its sports programs. On The Network Kyle Klingman and Andy Hamilton debate the nuances of ordering a cheesesteak in Philadelphia and visit with Northern Colorado head coach Troy Nickerson on the latest edition of On The Mat. Virginia Tech assistant Jared Frayer recaps the CKLV and previews the upcoming U.S. Senior Nationals with a pair of Southeast Regional Training Center members Mekhi Lewis and Ty Walz set to compete. That’s on Inside Virginia Tech Wrestling. You can get to read those stories and more from Mat Talk Online’s daily wrestling newsletter. It’s Friday the 13th. It was perhaps the only cool thing about growing up with the name Jason. The whole mythological thing with the Argonauts hadn’t quite resonated just yet - and since I didn’t go to school at the University of Providence or play in Toronto in the CFL, those references were lost on me - just like those two COULD be lost on you. This is Short Time Shots, a mostly daily look at the scores and more from in and around the world of wrestling, I’m Jason Bryant. Before we get to the college action, the Walsh Ironman, one of the best high school wrestling tournaments in the universe is rolling on in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. To keep with the theme, Wyoming Seminary coach Scott Green says Sem has 13 entered, 13 survived on the 13th. Somewhat witty. No truth to the rumor Coach Green was at Wing Warehouse with the seedy underbelly of the wrestling internet. Sometimes you get interrupted from recording a show by three people in said town of Cuyahoga Falls. Minnesota Beer of the Night: You probably won’t find it by the time you get here for the NCAA Division I Championships, but it’s Surly’s Black Horsemen, which is brewed in collaboration with those fun-loving metal heads at King Diamond. Yes, THAT King Diamond. It’s a Danish style black lager - a style I fell in love with when I was at the Junior World Championships in Trnava, Slovakia in 2018. This isn’t quite as awesome as what I had over there, but it’s delicious and perfect at five percent - remember, I’m on untappd at jasonbryant12. New Patron: Pat Fitzgerald. Yup. That one. Thanks Pat for your support over the years. Dual Meets: No. 6 NC State doubled up Appalachian State 24-12 with Nick Reenan making his return to the Wolfpack lineup at 197 pounds. Reenan beat Paul Carson 4-3, scoring a takedown in the third to pick up the W. Hayden Hidlay cruised to a 16-3 major decision over App State’s Matt Zovistoski at 157 pounds. D.J. Fehlman’s 9-3 win at 133 pounds in the dual’s final bout was enough to push Lock Haven past Navy 19-13 in the Rumble in the Jungle at Red Lion High School in Red Lion, Pennsylvania. Shout out to Red Lion head coach, Mike “The Nite Fox” Catullo. In Division II, the Battlers of Alderson Broaddus beat NAIA West Virginia Tech 33-16 in Beckley - that’s in West Virginia. Top-ranked St. Cloud State moved within one win of tying the Division II dual meet win streak record - one that they hold - after beating Northern State 29-9. The Huskies have won 53 in a row. Northern State’s James Burks did beat St. Cloud State’s James Pleski 7-5 at 157, so that’s a notable one there. Augsburg, ranked fourth in Division III, topped Division II Southwest Minnesota State on Friday in Minneapolis. The Auggies won six of 10 and top-ranked Ryan Epps earned a fall at 4:51 at 165 pounds. You know those kids books, if you give a mouse a cookie or if you give a moose a muffin? Well, if you mention Augsburg, you’re going to have to mention Wartburg. Top-ranked Wartburg - that’s in the dual rankings - beat Cornell College 43-2. Also, UW-Eau Claire beat UW-Stevens Point 25-17. There was a slew of duals at the Pigeon Forge Duals in Tennessee, most of which were NAIA teams. No. 5 Campbellsville and No. 2 Reinhardt both went 4-0, while No. 10 Life went 3-0. Keiser, a first-year program in Florida, picked up two wins, but according to NAIA rules, only one of them was official - the 39-18 win over Bluefield. There was the win over NJCAA Southwest Virginia, but matches against two-year schools don’t count for NAIA schools. Buried the lede there - Keiser got its first win in school history! Concordia (Neb.) beat Midland 54-(-1) - yes, that’s negative. No report from the dual in Reno between Montana State-Northern and Eastern Oregon. Out west, Highline beat Big Bend 31-18. Notables on the Docket: There’s the UNI Open, LIU is at Drexel, Lock Haven is hosting some D3 schools while Chattanooga heads to No. 11 Iowa State. In Division II, there’s the monster tournament at Indianapolis, the Midwest Classic, while West Liberty faces Pitt-Johnstown. There’s like 40 duals in Division III, while Indiana Tech and Nebraska Wesleyan are hosting multi-team events. FROM THE DWN: Will Anthony Cassar break away from the U.S. and represent another nation in future Olympic Games? Well, if that isn’t a clickbait headline, I don’t know what is. Best part about that statement is its not a headline, but a throwaway line in a story from LovingMalta.com about the Penn State heavyweight. Apparently he’s of Maltese lineage - the country, not the breed of dog. The Mid-American Conference released its conference rankings, some of which seem to be devoid of results that happened within the past week. Trackwrestling’s Seven Minutes series with host Kyle Klingman talks with THE Ohio State University head coach Tom Ryan. Kyle also drops the third episode of How Wrestling Built Me with entrepreneur Joe Johnson of VADE Nutrition. TheMat.com previews the athletes you’ll be seeing in Fort Worth next weekend at the U.S. Senior Nationals. That’s the name of it this year, since it’s not the Open, but it is the Open, but - anyway - of note, Tyler Graff going Greco. Lots of stuff out there on the Ironman, so here’s a quick link to InterMat’s semifinal matchups and team scores, because, well, it’s free. The NWCA has announced the Jim Koch Division II Hall of Fame for 2020. Super talented field with representation from North Dakota State, Chadron State, Augustana (S.D.) and Northern Colorado. Little Rock drops a feature about its wrestling twins, Jaylen and Jayden Carson. Big UFC card this weekend as a couple of wrestlers meet up - Kamarudeen “Marty” Usman and Colby Covington. Marty isn’t a dig, that’s just how I knew him. Resident fighter derelict Jon “Bones” Jones doesn’t care much for Covington. Well, they both suck at life, so there’s that. Here’s what Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports said about it. Sure, they could beat the crap out of me, but yeah, take world capitals for $1,200 and see how they do there, Alex. Chelsea here today with Chelsea's Motorvational Mondays. Today we have Gair Maxwell, going to Motorvate you on this lovely Monday morning. Well, I don't know about that Chelsea, because I think deep down you've got all of the Motorvation inside you from your hockey days. I've got some of that, yes. You were a hockey player. Yes. And how long did you play the game? I played for the last 14 years. 14 years, and you played a pretty good level of hockey, if I'm not mistaken, I know you're a little modest about it, but where did you play? I played for Team New Brunswick, then Canada Games twice and Senior Nationals three times. So we can say in many respects you're a hockey expert. Sure. Sure. We'll go with that. We'll go with that. Three things from hockey that I think are so crucial here on Motorvational Mondays. Ready for it Chels .......Forecheck.......Backcheck........Paycheck ....Forecheck..........Backcheck...........Paycheck. Here's how it plays out. Forecheck. Those are all the pro-active things you got to do in business and life. You've got to be thinking forward. You got to be doing things for other people, spreading the good karma. That's the Forecheck, right? You've got to be a good person. You've got to be giving, charitable. There's all kinds of stuff you can do on the Forecheck. The Backcheck is all the loose ends, and the spinning plates, and all the details, all the stuff that falls through the cracks. Life. Life, right? All this stuff you actually got to get done. The Forecheck. The Backcheck. The more you can Forecheck and Backcheck, what do you think Chels? The better chance you have of... Getting a bigger Paycheck. Getting a better Paycheck. That's for sure. Those are the things that we wanted to share today on Chelsea's Motorvational Monday. Have a Huggable Week.
