Maddie is the wife of another guest on the podcast, Jason Nolf, and is the first National Champion in that household! Maddie's testimony paints a picture of what it means to seek and hear from God. Muscato developed a new wave of music and film opportunities for youth with Autism and is taking the nonprofit with him on tour. Along the way, he will be donating a portion of the ticket sales to Rock Autism Multimedia Vocational Programs - music and film production workshops and internships for students on the spectrum. Max's story is entwined with his brother Sonny, a gifted drummer with Autism who was physically and mentally abused in assisted living facilities, used as a drug mule for drug dealers, tossed in and out of jail and shot by a drunk corrections officer. Max led the charge for change to save him by founding Rock Autism, to develop young leaders within the Autism community by providing music and film workshops for autistic youth, keeping them free from depression, isolation, addiction and suicide -- all very real issues affecting the Autism community today. this track but it was fun to put together. started off as an attempt to make a dungeon synth piece inspired by the Nazgul in LOTR. those elements are still there, but i suppose its turned more into a hyperspace wizard/warlock battle. programed on lsdj 4.something.something performed on a DMG Gameboy. 2021 Creative Commons CC Attribution Noncommercial (BY-NC)

This is a thing we're doing now, so keep an eye open for those.Lara Croft's adventure series Tomb Raider turned 25 this year - feeling old yet? - and we wanted to discuss the series with the help of The B. We also asked, friend of the show, Mad C to create some killer artwork for this one and we all agree that it's amazing. Make sure to click through to the full show notes to see the full image.Speaking of the full show notes, these show notes are a little shorter than the full ones (as they would take forever to download), so make sure you do checkout out the website for the full show notes - here's a link directly too them.Content WarningWe discuss Lara Croft and the Tomb Raider series in this episode, and naturally we had to talk about Lara being used by advertisers and the publishers of the Tomb Raider series for her sex appeal. Thankfully, this was a very short lived period of time - although, it should never have happened at all.As such, when we discuss Lara Croft in the cultural zeitgeist, we discussed her placement as a sex icon, and the sex appeal that the advertisers leant on her for. As such, this might spark uncomfortable conversations with any little ones who also might listen. Please listen responsibly. At 33:30, B had something to say and we felt that it leaving unedited was warranted. He said:We still have one hell of a long fucking way to go- The BNote from Jay:In this instance, B was talking about how, as a society, all people are still not seen as equal and given equal rights. And as producer and overseer of this production, I took the decision that we would leave that cuss in there. Not to politicise the show notes of a podcast about video games, but B has a point. And that's why I chose to leave the swear in.Please don't hesitate to reach out to us via our Contact Page, Twitter (DMs are open), or on Facebook if you think that I was in error with this decision.Show NotesRemember when Tomb Raider came out? We do, and it turned 25 this year. Twenty-five years old! imagine that.To celebrate this occasion, we brought The B back on to the show. This was largely because The B and Squidge have an encyclopedic knowledge of video games and when you pair them up, they become a force to be reckoned with. But in order to do this, we needed suitable Tomb Raider-y names. Our names were chosen for our favourite canon/series of Tomb Raider games - it's a whole thing. We're all big fans of these games, and Jay had taken to streaming Tomb Raider: Anniversary on our Twitch channel - plug, plug - shortly before recording this episode.Don't make me face my own mortality again!- The BBut before we could talk about the series, we needed to talk about the intro to the first game and the first level, and just where they take place. Apparently, we had no idea whether it was: Nepal Tibet Holland Venezuela Africa Beirut The Hanging Gardens of Babylon - Eddie Izzard references are cool, right? or New Mexico And we all agree that Lara Croft seems to be getting younger, whilst we all get older.Apparently, this is because the newer games are set before the first (chronologically) released game. Which lead Jay to attempt to tell a joke:I wanted to be a reboot, but they I took an arrow to the knee- JayWhich, we can all agree, was a pants attempt at a joke. And not even related to the topic of discussion.Jay's First Tomb Raider GameJay was the first to answer - probably because he's the oldest, or some other nonsense reason - with the first Tomb Raider game on the PS1. Even though his memories of the second game are a little stronger because he liked to use the cheat which made Lara explode when playing the first area of Tomb Raider 2.Full Show NotesMake sure to check out the full show notes for more discussion on the points we raise, some extra meta-analysis, and some links to related things.Which games do YOU think Nightdive should have a crack at next? This is a new type of shorter episode that we'll be putting out each month, called "THE LOOK BACK!". In these, we'll be looking back at the previous month's episodes and giving you a rundown of them. And if you haven't already, then look for us on your podcatcher of choice and subscribe. It's 100% free to do so, you know.Episode 115 - Raw With Jay: Graphics vs GameplayThis past month - May 2021 - we put out four brand new episodes. The first episode was a Raw with Jay about Graphics vs Gameplay. You can think of the Raw with Jay episodes as either a series of rants, or things that he wants to cover outside of the rest of the show. There's nothing stopping us coming back to them, but he wants to take a whack at them first. This episode was actually inspired by a tweet by friend of the show Jason Maddison where he had said that most gamers these days are focussing on features that Jay would call secondary, if not completely unimportant. This one tweet took Jay on a journey of wanting to ask listeners, and journos, and the majority of gamers what _THEY_ think Ray Tracing is. According to them it's a super important part of the gaming experience, right?Pro tip: it's not.So Jay spent this episode outlining why he thinks that, whilst graphics can be impressive, they aren't required in order to enjoy a gaming experience.Episode 116 Catching Up With The B - Part OneNext was a two part discussion with The_B. We'd felt that it had been a _very_ long time since we'd had The_B on the show - in fact, it had only been a few months, as his last appearance was in January. In this first part of our conversation with him, we wanted to find out what he had been playing recently; and he delivered in spades. In those 50 minutes, we mentioned 25 games in total - most of which aren't the games he'd been playing, but they are related.Other things that we covered were the fact that we're now two years into the launches of the PS5 and Xbox Series consoles, the so called CMOS "timebomb" which is present in all of Sony's consoles from the PSP and PS3 onwards. And of course, we talk about Nightdive's Shadow Man remaster. One of my favourite parts of the episode was when The_B started talking about '90s TV adverts and said "REMEMBER GAME GEAR'S MAN!" Nothing like a bit of "old man yelling at cloud" to brighten your day.Episode 117 Catching Up With The B - Part TwoWhile part one of our catch-up with The_B was all about what he had been playing recently, part two was almost dominated by talk of Nightdive Studios. We started by talking about what happened when Acclaim went belly up and this inspired me to come up with a completely new segment as we were recording:Which games should Nightdive remaster next?- SquidgeThis reminded Jay of the story of the original source code for Prince of Persia being found in a garage, and how it took months to read the data off of the floppy discs. This, he reckons, will happen more and more over the next few years because games devs in the '80s and '90s weren't terribly great about keeping the source code for their games safe. Which lead to us trying to figure out how Nightdive keep finding the source code for the games that they remaster. The discussion on which games Nightdive should remaster next lead to The_B setting us up and knocking us down within one sentence: Nightdive haven't done anything with The Operative: No One Lives Forever (aka NOLF) and me asking whether Cate Archer is a Disney Princess now.One of my favourite parts of the episode was when I stole all of The_B's ideas for Nightdive Studios remasters. Seriously, I listed all the games that he was going to mention before he had the chance.Coming up This MonthWe thought we'd give a little teaser on what's coming up this next month (June 2021); you heard it here first. We have another Raw with Jay, but we're keeping the topic close to our chests at the moment. You'll have to subscribe (FOR FREE!) so that you don't miss it. After that, Squidge brings back a previously used segment for his first solo episode - that's right, Squidge has a solo episode. And after both of those episodes, The_B joins us again; this time we talk about the fact that 2021 saw the Tomb Raider series hit 25 years old. Tomb Raider was arguably one of the biggest games of the '90s, and we wanted to pay homage to Lara Croft's adventures by discussing our favourites in the series. We also have some amazing artwork for this episode by twitter user MAD-C, and we cannot wait for you all to see it.We think you'll agree that this coming month's episodes are looking and sounding great. Keep an eye on the podcast feed, or our YouTube channel for the trailers when they drop.Wrapping UpSo that's what we put out in May. Remember that you can always get in touch with us on our Facebook page, on Twitter, or with our Contact page. Don't forget to check the chapters tab in your podcatcher. This is a thing we're doing now, so keep an eye open for those. The B returned, and we wanted to talk about what happened to Acclaim's IPs after they went belly up. Squidge also wanted to do a round-robin on the games we'd love to see Nightdive Studios produce a remaster of. We also pondered precisely who the rights holder to The Operative: No One Live Forever (aka NOLF) is, whether Agent Cate Archer is a Disney Princess, and we talk about just how good PC gaming was in the 90s.Here's a sample of the full show notes - make sure to click through and check them out.Show NotesWe jumped directly into part two of our discussion with The B - here's a link to part one in case you missed it - by discussing how some of Acclaim's properties seemed to keep going after the death of the company. As part of that discussion, we ended up listing a large number of Acclaim's greatest hits, too: Mortal Kombat Alien3 (on the Mega Drive/Genesis) WWF WrestleMania: The Arcade Game Mortal Kombat & Mortal Kombat 2 Turok But what's important about that, is that we noticed that Nightdive have finagled the rights to a lot of the Acclaim games from the mid to late 90s. But Jay really wanted to know where they got the original source code for Shadow Man from. Seriously, the content in the remaster has not just been upscaled, there are whole sections that were originally cut from the game, but put back in for the remaster - it's safe to say that Jay is a fan.And this brought to Jay's mind the story of how the original source code for Prince of Persia for the Apple II was found on a series of 5.25 inch floppy discs, in someone's garage. Jay also brought up that the original source code for Crash Bandicoot is also on GitHub, but it has since been taken down. Then Squidge comes up with a new segment:What Should Nightdive Remaster Next? And what an idea it was. A round-robin style discussion on which games Nightdive should take a whack at next. Squidge started us of with the (unfortunately difficult) The Operative: No One Lives Forever (or NOLF, as it's sometimes known). Why might it be unfortunately difficult to remaster? Because no one really knows for sure who owns the rights to it - as is the case with a lot of video games from the 90s.So Agent Archer is a Disney princess, now?- SquidgeThe B then gets us all excited about a NOLF remaster by telling us that Nightdive Studios had filed trademarks for a number of different NOLF related terms. But The B then destroys our hopes by telling us that the trademarks were filed in 2014, and that Nigthdive have done nothing with them since.Full Show NotesMake sure to check out the full show notes for more discussion on the points we raise, some extra meta-analysis, and some links to related things.Which games do YOU think Nightdive should have a crack at next? First released in the year 2000 for windows, The Operative: No One Lives Forever (NOLF) was widely praised as the best FPS released since Half Life. The game openly celebrates the Spy genre, feeling like a bizarre amalgamation of James Bond, Get Smart and Austin Powers. Monolith Productions was struggling with giving the game a unique identity until they struck on the idea of making the lead character a woman. Enter Cate Archer, dryly sarcastic, witty and deadly, but surrounded by the blatant sexism of the 60s, with everyone questioning her abilities and blaming her emotions whenever things go wrong.Cate Archer tackles the obstacles in front of her with aplomb, sneaking around enemy bases and shooting anyone who happens to stop her. But can the gameplay of this mostly forgotten relic hold up all these years later? Is the story really that fascinating or just a glorified homage? On this episode we discuss:Can you have a story that features both ridiculous satire and a serious threat to the world? How does NOLF balance these two seemingly opposed tones?Do you need to have a wide variety of tools at your disposal to make stealth gameplay engaging? Or is a silenced gun all you need if the other elements work? Will we ever get tired of pressing hidden switches to unveil secret passages and world domination maps?We answer these questions and many more on the 43rd episode of the Retro Spectives Podcast!---Intro Music: KieLoBot - Tanzen KOutro Music: Rockit Maxx - One point to anotherNOLF OST: Guy Whitmore---To play NOLF on a modern PC, completely free:First, download NOLF GOTY edition at this link. Episode Notes Axe versus whale rib. Sword versus blubber. "Showdown at the Strand" is a retelling of one of the Icelandic sagas using American Western motifs. P.S. Nolf wrote this story in honor of the heritage of her Icelandic horse Blessi. The author planned to re-enact hunting stranded whales in Iceland by horseback around 1020 AD. But something happened so she wrote this story instead. This story is loosely based on episodes from The Saga of Grettir the Strong. Norse sayings are from Icelandic sagas and the Havamal. Verse at end adapted from The Saga of Grettir the Strong. Translated from Icelandic by G. A. Hight.Contact info for P.S. NolfWebsite---- Story Submission ----Got a short story you'd like to submit? 57 kg – 61 kgOn this episode Ben Askren and Dernlan breakdown the mini-tournament of the 2019 World Team Trials. They start out at the 57 kg weight class where Thomas Gilman beat Darian Cruz to head to the best of three finals. They also discuss the 61 kg weight class which is not an Olympic weight class and where some of those guys will go whether that’s up in weight to 65 or down to 57. Nico Megaludis who lost to Tyler Graff in the mini-tournament finals is an example of a guy who announced he will be going down to 57 kg. Moving down in weight is not a small task by any means and takes a lot of time upwards of a year.65 kg (10:17)The first match they break down is Jason Ness who got tech falled by Dom Demas. That is not something we’ve come to expect to happen to Ness although Demas has proven himself a force to be reckoned with. Demas went on to battle Jaydin Eierman in the consolations losing in a huge scoring match 20-15. Overall there are a lot of extremely talented young wrestlers at this weight class.70 kg (17:08)Askren didn’t expect to Anthony Ashnault to make the finals here but he is another really young wrestler immediately making an impact on the national scene. Ashnault will most likely go down to 65 kg next year. Askren and Dernlan disagree on if James Green will go up or down in weight.74 kg (22:00)Askren was blown away when Logan Massa beat Thomas Gant in the semi-finals of the mini-tournament 5-4. Dernlan talks about the difference in responsibility when you’re competing for a team vs when you’re competing representing yourself in freestyle. Jason Nolf looked great throughout the tournament. Askren likes that Nolf made the move to 74 kg now and didn’t wait.79 kg (25:20)Askren trains closely with Nick Becker who recently signed with the Badger RTC and took third place dropping to Mark Hall. In the finals, Mark Hall lost to Zahid Valencia 5-0. Even with such a close score Askren and Dernlan agree Valencia’s win was pure dominance. After this match, no one would have expected the outcome of the best of three finals against Alex Dieringer. These three guys are all wrestler who cannot get down to 74 kg which makes 86 kg a brutal weight class to be in as the 2020 Olympics approach.86 kg (35:35)Nick Heflin looked good throughout the mini-tournament but couldn’t get it done in the finals. Askren and Dernlan hope David Taylor is ready to compete at Final X.92 kg (36:37)Michael Macchiavello beat Hayden Zillmer in the finals. Askren and Dernlan agree Macchiavello has a good opportunity to go down in weight and compete.97 kg (38:40)Ty Walz turned it around from the U.S. Open and did well throughout the mini-tournament to make the finals.125 kg (39:41)Heavyweight was an exciting weight class during the World Team Trials. Gable Steveson being the shining star throughout. Given Steveson’s age and skill Dernlan and Askren are fully on board the Steveson train and are excited for Final X.

Heavy WeightOn this episode, Ben Askren and Matt Dernlan will break down the Finals of the World Team Trials. Askren doesn't waste any time jumping right into his opinion on Gable Steveson vs Adam Coon in the Heavy Weight Finals. some people picked Steveson to beat Coon but not in the dominant fashion he did. Dernlan says if you had no frame of reference you would think Coon was the 18-year-old college wrestler and Steveson was the recent graduate who has proven their abilities at the senior level. Coon felt the most comfortable wrestling upper body with Steveson but once he sensed danger he tried to get out of bounds. Overall Steveson ran through the World Team Trials in such a way no one could have predicted. 97 kg (8:36)Kyven Gadson took on Ty Walz in the best 2 of 3 finals with Gadson getting the win in two close matches. Askren and Dernlan agree Gadson has proven himself to be a clear number two at this weight class as Kyle Snyder has proven himself a clear number one. 92 kg (10:29)Bo Nickal beat Michael Macchiavello first match by tech fall and second match 5-0. Dernlan talks about how Macchiavello attempted to slow it down in the second match but still couldn't get any offense going. The set up of Nickal vs J'Den Cox at Final X is one of the most anticipated and exciting match ups.86 kg (14:39)Pat Downey gets a flurry at the end of match number one and then holds off Nick Heflin in the second match to get the win.79 kg (16:13) Alex Dieringer dominates NCAA Champ Zahid Valencia getting two tech falls in the finals. Dernlan talks about how Dieringer was definitely injured last year and how he made a big-time statement this year with his dominance. Askren thinks 100% Kyle Dake vs 100% healthy Dieringer will be a scrap and it'll be super interesting to see how these two approach their Final X match up. 74 kg (18:10)One of the most anticipated finals came at 74 kg Isaiah Martinez vs Jason Nolf. Imar dominated the first match and the majority of the second match but Nolf was able to get a head pinch at the very end and come up big to send it to a winner take all third match. Imar wasn't rattled and remained focused and got the tech fall in the third match. 70 kg (23:30)Anthony Ashnault goes down in the first match and is forced to injury default out of the second giving James Green the win. James Green was on a mission throughout this tournament to show the separation he has from the rest of this weight class and just how good he is.65 kg (24:16)Zain Retherford beats Jordan Oliver in two 7-6 matches. Askren talks about the strategy behind deciding when to challenge a call and when to not. Overall these two matches were so high level and technical by both guys especially during the first period it is hard to believe Oliver won't be moving on to Final X.61 kg (30:48)Tyler Graff beats Cody Brewer in this high scoring final. Askren breaks down the controversial referee calls. Dernlan talks about something they've talked about all Folkstyle season which is the importance of the referees understanding wrestling and not just making black and white calls.

Don't Limit Athletic PerformanceBen Askren kicks off this week's podcast by getting Matt Dernlan's take on Certainty vs Truth which was Askren's Mental Mondays topic. Dernlan agrees that if you're telling a wrestler exactly what to do in a match, you're limiting them. You should encourage your wrestler to be able to think for themselves. If you don't learn to think for yourself when you’re in the middle of a match, you will not succeed. If a coach tells a wrestler exactly what to do, they're only setting themselves up to be questioned later if that technique does not work.Penn State vs MichiganNo. 1 Penn State defeated No. 5 Michigan 25-11 in front of nearly 16,000 fans in the sold-out Bryce Jordan Center. Askren would like to see the average attendance numbers from this season compared to 10 years ago. It seems like many big teams are selling out their venues this season.Nolf, Next Topic? At 157 lbs, Penn State's No. 1 Jason Nolf took out No. 5 Alec Pantaleo 9-2. What Askren read online and social media was that Nolf utterly dominated Pantaleo but Askren didn't feel that way when he watched the match. Starting the 2nd period, Nolf had two escapes and Pantaleo had a takedown. Dernlan thinks Pantaleo spent the match attempting to keep Nolf at bay and Nolf was more the aggressor. Askren believes this was a very winnable match for Pantaleo. He didn't think he'd be saying that about any Nolf matchup this season but he's excited about a possible rematch.Vincenzo Joseph vs Logan MassaAnother No. 1 vs No. 5 matchup took place at 165 lbs. No. 1 Vincenzo Joseph beat No. 5 Logan Massa, 4-2 with a last-second takedown in sudden victory. Askren says every time these two meet it will be close. While Joseph brought the pressure Massa was actively attacking. Dernlan believes because Joseph was putting the pressure with his snap-downs Massa found the way to get out of that was to attack.Mark Hall vs Myles AmineNo. 1 Mark Hall defeated No. 3 Myles Amine in a close 3-2 victory. Askren thinks Amine held his own in the scramble. That being said he doesn't see Hall losing in a future match and thinks he has Amine's number.Mason Parris vs Anthony CassarAnthony Cassar had a dominating win over Mason Parris with a 19-8 major decision. Both Askren and Dernlan were extremely impressed with the power Parris showed as he flipped Cassar off of him in the first period. Overall, Askren believes in a year or two Mason Parris will improve technically and be really hard to beat. Cassar and Penn State have been working on attaining a sixth season via a medical redshirt. Askren talks about how heavyweight is only going to get tougher next year with new up and coming heavyweights including Parris and Gable Steveson. Parris never gave up during his match against Cassar. Dernlan is of the mindset that you should never fall down and take the rest of a match off even if you know it's technically out of reach. Making your opponent wrestle you is the only way you can close the gap and figure them out for the next time you meet.Rutgers vs PrincetonRutgers' No. 2 Anthony Ashnault got a major decision to win the dual over No. 1 Matthew Kolodzik. Dernlan and Askren talk about the Rutgers Athletic Center (Rac) and the energy it contained at that moment. Ashnault was able to control the match in every single aspect. Dernlan can't recall a time where Kolodzik got dominated in that fashion.
Did Anyone Really Win in Daton Fix vs Nick Suriano? This weekend was filled with exciting collegiate match ups. With streaming and broadcasting services the availability of watching these duals are at your fingertips. This wasn't a reality a short time ago when it was hard to find live college wrestling. One of the highly anticipated wrestling matches this weekend was between Oklahoma State's Daton Fix and Rutgers' Nick Suriano. These two have a deep history growing up in New Jerse. They also hold claim to one of the most talked about high school matches of all time. This weekends matchup followed theme with the match lasting 34 minutes. The match actually lasted even longer than that if you include all of the time spent reviewing by the officials. Ben Askren isn't surprised that every time these two meet it goes this way due to their similar high-pressure styles. The bout finally came to a controversial close with Fix serving Suriano his first loss of the season 3-2 due to a hands-to-the-face call. Askren is excited to see Fix and Suriano wrestle other top-ranked opponents but not each other due to the way their styles match up.Kaden Gfeller vs Anthony AshnaultAskren feels Kaden Gfeller vs Anthony Ashnault was the most exciting match of the Oklahoma State vs Rutgers dual. Gfeller fell to Ashnault 9-6. Askren thinks Gfeller is losing to these top guys because he struggles to generate enough of his own offense. After the win, Ashnault celebrated by doing the pistol fingers at Gfeller. Gfeller then pushes Ashnault at the handshake and both sides got a one-point deduction as a result.Patrick Glory vs Nick PiccininniGlory vs Piccininni was another exciting match this weekend. Glory lost to Piccininni with a final score of 9-4. Askren begs Glory to stop choosing bottom until he gets better. Glory has the potential to place 3rd at the NCAA Finals which would be a remarkable achievement considering the competition and Glory's age.Nick Lee vs Tristan MoranWisconsin's Tristan Moran went to Rec Hall and gave Penn State's Nick Lee his first loss of the season in second sudden victory 12-10. This was a huge upset not only in the rankings but also Moran has been struggling with his weight at the 141 lbs weight class.Jason Nolf vs Ryan DeakinNolf was able to stop all the chatter surrounding his bout with Deakin with a 17-7 major decision victory. Askren talks about how many people believed No. 3 ranked Deakin was the guy to finally beat Nolf. It will be exciting to watch the rest of Nolf's season.Austin Desanto vs Ethan LizakThe final score of 6-1 doesn't tell the story of how dominant No. 10 Desanto was against No. 8 Lizak. Desanto, at the end of the match, shoved Lizak’s head into the mat and then started taunting the crowd. Askren is always in favor of celebrations and showmanship and didn't really have a problem with what happened after the match.

Jeff runs down the big video game releases for the week, and gets excited for a No One Lives Forever VR mid, and Beatsaber.
So it’s been a few weeks since we downed a few shots, and no, I’m not talking about your double imperial homebrewed egg nog. I love craft beer, especially the stuff made up here by Minnesota’s finest, but come on -- no one needs a Russian Imperial triple-hopped barrel aged collaborative fest bier, unless that beer is FREE! I’m Jason Bryant, and this is Short Time Shots, a look back at the days happenings in college wrestling. To me, the most important thing going on was the NWCA Multi-Divisional National Duals. The event featured 86 teams from five college divisions, over 50 ranked teams and an astounding 345 nationally ranked wrestlers. Basically, there’s currently 76 teams in Division I wrestling -- there were more teams in this event than there were in the nation’s most popular division. Why? Because these ranked Division I duals won’t take that long to power through. By the way, Happy New Year. No. 2 Ohio State squashed Maryland 44-3, but that’s not surprising. Nathan Tomasello made his much-anticipated season debut at 125 pounds and he didn’t spend that much time on the mat, registering a technical fall against Maryland’s Brandon Cray. Third-ranked Oklahoma State scored bonus victories from heavyweight Derek White and 133-pounder Kaid Brock to get past fifth-ranked NC State 19-16 in the Tussle for the Troops, the first ever NCAA college dual meet to take place outside of North America. Why do I have to specify North America? Simon Fraser is an NCAA Division II school and they’re in Canada, so it wouldn’t be the first NCAA dual outside of the U.S. and it wouldn’t be the first Division I dual either, considering D1 teams have wrestled at Simon Fraser in the past. Oh, yeah -- Kevin Jack beat Dean Heil with a late takedown in the third period. After winning over 50 in a row, Mean Dean has lost two straight. 141 is bananas, B-A-N-A-N-A-S. Shout out to you Hanna Grisewood. Seventh-ranked Iowa laid the wood to Michigan State, picking up six falls and coming away with a 49-6 victory. STOP BURYING THE LEDE! Spencer Lee made his Carver-Hawkeye debut and promptly decked another talented freshman, RayVon Foley in 46 seconds. Not to be confused with the 46 MINUTES I had to wait today for my Freaky NOT FAST Jimmy Johns lunch delivery. Anyway -- anyone remember that story about the Iowa college student that tried to bribe a police officer to get out of a ticket with some Jimmy John’s? I’d have taken it. Michigan shut out Indiana 43-0. Things went about how you might expect there. South Dakota State, which sits at No. 15, the highest ranking in school history, beat Oregon State 30-15. Seth Gross, ANOTHER fall at 133 pounds. Seriously, if it weren’t for guys named Nolf and Retherford, Gross would be getting a lot more chatter. General funkiness down in Chapel Hill as Wyoming went 4-0, beating No. 19 North Carolina, American, Duke and Army West Point. North Carolina has proven to be a nightmare when coordinating the Division I coaches poll. This is the same team that started the year ranked, lost 31-6 to Purdue, beat No. 8 Minnesota and then loses to Wyoming -- the same Wyoming team that split with Oklahoma State. Sure, no AC Headlee or Ethan Ramos for UNC. Dalton Macri had a really tough day up at 141 pounds for the Heels. Now, time to roll! National Duals Time. Oh wait, one more thing. I was going to mention this on Thursday night, but quite frankly, it was late and I had to take my inlaws to the airport at O’Dark Thirty. Fresno State picked up its first win against a Division I opponent since reinstatement with a 29-13 victory over Cal Poly. Josh Hokit, welcome to the party. Right off the football field and in there with a fall. Attaboy coach Steiner. While Thursday’s competition at the NWCA Multi-Divisional National Duals was fueled by upsets, traditional powers settled in on Friday where three championship streaks continued as the finals wrapped up at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Grand View collected its seventh straight NAIA National Duals championship, Clackamas won its fifth in a row in the NJCAA division, while St. Cloud State won its second straight title in Division II. Augsburg beat rival Wartburg to end the Knights’ seven-year win streak in Division III, while Campbellsville won its first title in the WCWA division. Hosted by the NUWAY, the NWCA Multi-Divisional National Duals is presented by Applied Silver, InBody, Therawox and the United States Marine. WCWA The Lady Tigers of Campbellsville are the new queens of the National Duals. A down-to-the-wire finish gave coach Lee Miracle’s team the school’s first National Duals championship in any division with a 24-19 win over second-seeded McKendree. It was truly a tale of two halves as McKendree jumped out to a 17-4 lead after winning the first five matches. The WCWA competes using international freestyle rules, allowing teams to score team points in a loss. Some lineup shifts by Campbellsville saw several wrestlers bump up two weights to maximize matchups including Grace Bullen, who went up to 143 from 130, and three-time WCWA champion Kayla Miracle, who went up to 155 from 136. Koral Sugiyama started Campbellsville’s roll of five straight wins with a fall over Brenda Reyna at 2:35 at 136. Bullen and Miracle followed with fa fall and a technical fall. Bullen pinned McKendree’s Alexis Porter in a matchup of past Junior world bronze medalists. Miracle’s tech gave Campbellsville its first lead at 18-17 with two weights left. Campbellsville’s Mariah Harris scored a 9-9 criteria over All-American Brandy Lowe at 170, putting the pressure on 191-pounders Kaitlyn Hill of Campbellsville and Destane Garrick of McKendree. Needed a shutout, a technical fall or a fall to win the dual for her team Garrick controlled the action early, but Hill hit a pair of four-point moves to pull out a 13-13 criteria victory and seal the win for Campbellsville. Division II St. Cloud State abruptly ended Seton Hill’s Cinderella run through the Division II bracket, smoking the Griffins 41-0 in the Division II final. The victory gave coach Steve Costanzo and the Huskies its 19th dual meet victory in a row and the program’s fourth Division II National Duals title. They also won titles in 2012 and 2013. St. Cloud State was the only seeded team to place in the top four -- they finished the event 34-6 individually. Division III Wartburg’s seven-year run atop the National Duals in Division III came to an end at the hands of longtime rival Augsburg. The Auggies split 10 matches with the Knights, but falls by David Flynn at 141 pounds and Lucas Jeske at 165 pounds were vital in the 21-17 victory. It was the 11th time the two teams have met in the Division III National Duals finals and the win on Friday gave Augsburg a 6-5 lead in the overall series when the teams meet in the championship final. Wartburg has 11 titles in the event, compared to the six won by Augsburg. Wartburg has reached the title match in all 17 years of the Multi-Divisional format. Augsburg opened winning the first three bouts, highlighted by Flynn’s fall over Martine Sandoval. Wartburg would chip away at the lead after wins by All-Americans Cross Cannone and Logan Thomsen before top-ranked Jeske picked up a fall late in the second period to put Augsburg handily in the lead. Stephen Larson’s 6-4 win at 184 pounds clinched the win for coach Jim Moulsoff’s Auggies, who had to get past a scrappy Johnson & Wales team just to make the final. Augsburg and Wartburg will reacquaint themselves in the annual Battle of the Burgs dual on February 1 in Waverly, Iowa. I will drive there. It will happen. NAIA Grand View won its seventh straight NAIA National Duals title on Friday, defeating sixth-seeded Williams Baptist 33-9. The seventh title in a row ties Wartburg’s all-division record that ended on Friday. Williams Baptist briefly held a 6-3 lead after Nick Souder’s pin over Omeed Chamanzad at 133 pounds, but Grand View would win seven of the next eight bouts, including national champion Josh Wenger’s 7-2 win over All-American Tyler Fraley at 149 pounds. Fellow national champions Grant Henderson (165) and Evan Hansen (197) scored bonus victories before Dean Broghammer avenged last year’s NAIA semifinal loss to Williams Baptist’s Demetrius Thomas with a 3-2 decision at 285 pounds, sparked by Broghammer’s takedown late in the second period. Grand View’s dual meet streak has been impressive. The Vikings have won 60 straight duals and 89 of 90 duals overall since the start of the 2011-12 season. The lone blemish was a loss on November 7, 2013 at Division I Iowa State. Now in the program’s 10th season, Grand View has lost just nine duals in school history. NJCAA Clackamas stopped Northeastern Oklahoma A&M 27-14 to earn the Cougars’ fifth straight NJCAA championship. It’s the third straight year Clackamas has defeated NEO in the junior college final. The key for Josh Rhoden’s squad came with four straight wins between 149 and 174 pounds. At 165, Clackamas’ Dayton Racer beat NEO’s Wyatt Jordan 10-4 in a matchup of returning national champions. Racer, last year’s champ at 157, trailed early and with the score tied at four with just over 30 seconds left, Racer scored a takedown and four nearfall points to pick up the victory. Clackamas’ top-ranked Dylan Reel needed overtime to get past Devin Crawl at 174 pounds, while Gage Harrah is sure to break into the NJCAA rankings after his 48-second fall over Gus Boyd at 197 pounds. The title is Clackamas’ sixth overall. The Cougars previous won the NJCAA National Duals title in 2011. The Short Time Time Wrestling Podcast is proudly supported by Compound Clothing.
