What can we learn from war, and warfare, in the twentieth century? What observations and deductions can we make, and what lessons can we draw? ‘War and Warfare in the Twentieth Century' examines both a clearly delineated period in the past, and the century which offers us the most (and the most relevant) material to examine. Deliberately looking through the prism of strategy, operations and tactics, this book offers a surprisingly novel perspective on some apparently familiar ground. Jim Storr's War and Warfare in the Twentieth Century (Howgate Publishing Limited, 2025) will make you think long and hard about what you thought you knew about war and warfare. We discuss what status is in human societies, the different ways it can manifest, and how we can acquire status through cooperation and prosociality. We then delve into an evolutionary account of status, as well as gender differences in how men and women compete for status, the psychological effects of low and high status, status games on social media, in-group/out-group competition, and how status works in egalitarian societies. We talk about how status games link to the development of personal preferences and social norms. Chapter 1What is SolitudeOnce upon a time, there was a book called "Solitude" by Anthony Storr. In this intriguing tale, Storr explores the importance of solitude in our lives. He delves deep into the idea that spending time alone can actually enhance our creativity, self-reflection, and overall well-being.Through captivating stories and thought-provoking insights, Storr uncovers the various ways in which solitude can be a source of strength and inspiration. Whether it's taking a quiet walk in nature or simply enjoying a moment of silence, Storr reminds us that solitude is not something to be feared, but rather embraced. So, dear reader, next time you find yourself craving some alone time, remember the wise words of Storr and allow yourself the gift of solitude. Who knows what wonders it may bring into your life.Chapter 2 Meet the Writer of SolitudeAnthony Storr adeptly employs his writing skills and language style to convey the complex emotions and meanings of solitude in his work. Through vivid descriptions, evocative language, and introspective reflections, Storr is able to capture the depth and significance of solitary experiences. His use of precise and impactful language helps to evoke the feeling of being alone, the introspection that can come with solitude, and the potential for both introspection and growth that solitude can provide. Storr's writing style effectively conveys the nuances and complexities of solitude, offering readers a deep and reflective exploration of this often misunderstood experience.Chapter 3 Deeper Understanding of SolitudeSolitude has played a significant role in shaping literature, culture, and society throughout history. Many writers and artists have turned to solitude as a source of inspiration and creativity, using the quiet and reflection that comes with being alone to produce some of their most profound works. One of the most notable examples of the influence of solitude on literature is the Romantic poets, who celebrated the individual and the natural world in their works. Poets such as Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Shelley wrote about the beauty and power of solitary experiences in nature, often reflecting on the profound insights and emotions that can arise from being alone.Solitude has also had a significant impact on culture, particularly in the realm of spirituality and religious practice. Many religious traditions emphasize the importance of solitude for deepening one's connection to a higher power or achieving spiritual enlightenment. Practices such as meditation, prayer, and retreats often involve periods of solitude and silence as a means of fostering inner peace and self-discovery.In modern society, the concept of solitude has taken on new meaning in the context of digital technology and constant connectivity. Many people now view solitude as a rare and precious commodity, a chance to unplug from the noise and distractions of daily life and focus on self-care and introspection. The rise of movements such as mindfulness and digital detoxing reflects a growing recognition of the importance of solitude in maintaining mental health and well-being.Overall, solitude has the power to change people's ways of thinking by providing space for reflection, creativity, and personal growth. It has had a significant impact on various fields, from literature and art to spirituality and mental health, shaping how individuals engage with themselves and the world around them.Chapter 4 Other Accessible Resources1. Elizabeth Cohen, Professor Emerita at York University, joins Jana Byars to talk about her new volume, Non-Elite Women's Networks Across the Early Modern World (Amsterdam University Press, 2023), edited with Marilee Couling. Non-elite or marginalized early modern women-among them the poor, migrants, members of religious or ethnic minorities, abused or abandoned wives, servants, and sex workers-have seldom left records of their experiences. Drawing on a variety of sources, including trial records, administrative paperwork, letters, pamphlets, hagiography, and picaresque literature, this volume explores how, as social agents, these doubly invisible women built and used networks and informal alliances to supplement the usual structures of family and community that often let them down. Ten essays, ranging widely in geography from the eastern Mediterranean to colonial Spanish America and in time from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries, show how flexible, sometimes ad hoc relationships could provide crucial practical and emotional support for women who faced problems of livelihood, reputation, displacement, and violence. Chapter 1:Summary of Solitude Book"Solitude: A Return to the Self" by Anthony Storr, published in 1988, explores the concept of solitude and its psychological significance in personal development and creativity. Contrary to the common view that regards excessive solitude as undesirable and typically associated with mental health issues like depression and anxiety, Storr proposes that solitude can also be beneficial and crucial for self-discovery and inner growth. The main thesis of the book is that periods of solitude are essential for individual differentiation and can be equally as important as interpersonal relationships in contributing to personal development. Storr argues that the capacity to be alone is vital for self-realization and innovation. Through examining the lives and works of various novelists, poets, musicians, and scientists, he illustrates how many creative individuals have utilized solitude to enhance their creativity and deepen their understanding of themselves.Storr discusses the balance between solitude and interpersonal relationships, suggesting that while relationships are important for validation and feedback, solitude provides a unique space for reflection and the formation of one's own thoughts and values. He addresses societal misconceptions about solitude, aiming to shift the negative perceptions and highlight its positive aspects.Through a blend of psychological theory, biographical sketches, and insightful observations, "Solitude" encourages readers to reconsider the role of solitude in a balanced life, suggesting that spending time alone is not just acceptable, but essential for some people in fostering their creativity and emotional wellbeing.Chapter 2:the theme of Solitude Book"Solitude: A Return to the Self" by Anthony Storr, first published in 1988, is an insightful exploration of the concept of solitude and its role in personal development and creativity. Storr, a British psychiatrist, argues against the prevailing notion that constant interpersonal relationships are the optimal condition for mental health. Instead, he posits that solitude can be equally vital for psychological development and well-being. Here are key elements of the book:### Key Plot Points"Solitude" isn't a narrative book with a plot but rather a psychological and philosophical examination. Key points in the book include:1. **Definition and Understanding of Solitude**: Storr delves into what solitude actually means and distinguishes it from loneliness—a negative state associated with lack of companionship.2. **Historical Perspectives**: The book discusses how views on solitude have changed over time and what historical figures and thinkers have said about it.3. **Case Studies**: Storr provides analysis of significant figures such as Ludwig van Beethoven, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Sigmund Freud to illustrate how solitude has played a key role in creativity and introspection.4. **Psychological Examinations**: There is an in-depth exploration of how solitary periods can foster personal growth, helping individuals to come to terms with their own identity without the influence of others.### Character DevelopmentSince "Solitude" is non-fiction, it doesn't feature character development in the traditional literary sense. However, by investigating the lives of historical figures, Storr paints detailed psychological profiles and shows how these individuals used solitude:- **Beethoven and Mozart**: Their creative processes are examined, showing how isolation contributed to their musical innovations.- **Freud**: His methodical introspection and...

Will Storr is a Journalist and Award-Winning Author of The Status Game, Selfie, The Heretics and the Science of Story Telling. If you are low-status, you are more 4x more likely to die early. Status is proven to be more important than diet or exercise for health outcomes.. Status is not just a modern phenomenon; it's a fundamental part of the human experience, existing long before our current society. As writer Will Storr explains, the need for status and respect from others is not merely a luxury—it's an essential psychological and biological requirement for humans to thrive. He calls it the original currency. Throughout history, status hierarchies have existed in animal societies, serving as a means to organise social life and prevent constant conflict. From our tribal ancestors to modern civilization, the desire for status has deeply shaped human behavior and social structures. But despite its importance, the topic of status often makes people feel uneasy. While discussions about connection and belonging are more comfortable, status remains a somewhat taboo subject. It's this discomfort that has perhaps led to fewer books being written about this universal human drive. However, Storr's work aims to shed light on this fundamental aspect of the human condition, unraveling its complexities and unveiling its significance in our lives. Also, join us to hear about the psychology of cults, why architechts are the most illusive modern day cult, Will's experience from going undercover following Neo-Nazi's to understand the madness of groupthink and his experiences of David Irving the infamous holocaust denier. For centuries, philosophers and scholars have described human behaviour in terms of sex, power and money. In The Status Game, bestselling author Will Storr radically turns this thinking on its head by arguing that it is our irrepressible craving for status that ultimately defines who we are. From the era of the hunter-gatherer to today, when we exist as workers in the globalised economy and citizens of online worlds, the need for status has always been wired into us. A wealth of research shows that how much of it we possess dramatically affects not only our happiness and wellbeing but also our physical health – and without sufficient status, we become more ill, and live shorter lives. It's an unconscious obsession that drives the best and worst of us: our innovation, arts and civilisation as well as our murders, wars and genocides. But why is status such an all-consuming prize? What happens if it's taken away from us? And how can our unquenchable thirst for it explain cults, moral panics, conspiracy theories, the rise of social media and the ‘culture wars' of today? On a breathtaking journey through time and culture, The Status Game offers a sweeping rethink of human psychology that will change how you see others – and how you see yourself (Harper Collins).Jack met Will at Parrillan in Borough Yards, London.Follow and subscribe to The Booking Club:Twitter/X: @bookingclubpodInstagram: @bookingclubpodTikTok: @bookingclubpod Hosted on Acast. I'm super excited to bring you today's show. Today on the podcast we have best-selling author Will Storr. Will's latest book The Science of Storytelling: Why Stories Make Us Human and How to Tell Them Better is a deep dive into how story affects the brain. Here's a bit about the book:Who would we be without stories?Stories mold who we are, from our character to our cultural identity. They drive us to act out our dreams and ambitions and shape our politics and beliefs. We use them to construct our relationships, to keep order in our law courts, to interpret events in our newspapers and social media.Storytelling is an essential part of what makes us human. There have been many attempts to understand what makes a good story – from Joseph Campbell's well-worn theories about myth and archetype to recent attempts to crack the ‘Bestseller Code'. But few have used a scientific approach. This is curious, for if we are to truly understand storytelling in its grandest sense, we must first come to understand the ultimate storyteller – the human brain. In this scalpel-sharp, thought-provoking book, Will Storr demonstrates how master storytellers manipulate and compel us, leading us on a journey from the Hebrew scriptures to Mr. Men, from Booker Prize-winning literature to box set TV. Applying dazzling psychological research and cutting-edge neuroscience to the foundations of our myths and archetypes, he shows how we can use these tools to tell better stories – and make sense of our chaotic modern world. His TED Talk is a must-watch for all filmmakers and screenwriters. After interview hundreds of the world's thought-leaders on story it's rare for me to find a completely new way of looking at story. I can't tell you how fascinating this conversation is. In this episode we welcome back author Will Storr whose new book, The Status Game, feels like required reading for anyone confused, curious, or worried about how politics, cults, conspiracy theories communities, social media, religious fundamentalism, polarization, and extremism are affecting us - everywhere, on and offline, across cultures, and across the world. What is The Status Game? It's our primate propensity to perpetually pursue points that will provide a higher level of regard among the people who can (if we provoked such a response) take those points away. And deeper still, it's the propensity to, once we find a group of people who regularly give us those points, care about what they think more than just about anything else.In the interview, we discuss our inescapable obsession with reputation and why we are deeply motivated to avoid losing this game through the fear of shame, ostracism, embarrassment, and humiliation while also deeply motivated to win this game by earning what will provide pride, fame, adoration, respect, and status. Will Storr's Website: https://willstorr.comHow Minds Change: www.davidmcraney.com/howmindschangehomeShow Notes: www.youarenotsosmart.comNewsletter: https://davidmcraney.substack.comPatreon: http://patreon.com/youarenotsosmart
