We’ll be updated by Lance Forman, CEO of H Forman & Son, smoked salmon manufacturers since 1905. We’ll also be replaying a part of the interview with the WEIRD CEO, Charles Towers Clark, who’s revolutionary thinking on running businesses has proved spectacularly right with the onset of the pandemic. Ironically, I interviewed him about the changes we can expect in our work-lives - just as lockdown in March 2020 was starting. And as the cofinitive #21toWatch prepares for its awards ceremony, I catchup with a nominee who’s on the shortlist for a second successive year, it’s Agile Analog’s CEO, Tim Ramsdale.
Jonny Gould’s SME Walkabout welcomes two guests today: BOOST&Co’s Cambridge principal, Faye McDonough and Lance Forman, managing director of H Forman & Son, smoked salmon manufacturer. We focus on the forthcoming Cofinitive #21toWatch, sponsored by BOOST&Co and a story of family business survival by emergency “pivoting” on more than one occasion. It’s a celebration of the people, companies and ‘things’ they create across Cambridge and the East of England, setting standards in innovation and entrepreneurship across the globe. #21toWatch showcases the lesser known, recognising exciting new entries across all market sectors and the panel of judges will assess each SME on Innovation, Challenge, Influence, Viability and Memorability. Entries have now closed and the shortlist is announced at the start of February, with the annual #21toWatch Top21 unveiled in a unique event on the first Thursday in March 2021. You’ll hear some of the winners right here! And if there was a world champion of “pivoting” a business plan to survive, to up sticks and restart to survive, the award might go to an independent salmon smokehouse in London’s East End. I talk to Lance Forman, the fourth generation family member of the only smokehouse left in that part of the country.

Australia's prime minister says his country will not be 'intimidated' by China. Australia had angered Beijing by calling for an investigation into the origins of the coronavirus, and China says there have been virus-related attacks on Chinese people in Australia, urging tourists and students to avoid going there. Peter Ryan is senior business correspondent at ABC News in Sydney, and tells us what's at stake. Also in the programme, after four rounds of negotiation, the Brexit trade deal talks between the UK and EU appear to have stalled. Lance Forman is a former MEP for the Brexit party, and owner of H Forman and Sons which smokes salmon in East London. He argues that an extension to the transition period during which Britain negotiates a trade deal would be counter productive. Barbara Moens is trade reporter for Politico in Brussels, and explains where the UK and EU are in disagreement. And Dave Roberts, owner of car parts maker Rimstock, says that the current uncertainty over a trade deal, combined with the coronavirus pandemic, is making business very difficult. Journalist Marcus Stead responds to the issues Lance Forman raised in the latest edition of Jonny Gould's Jewish State. Marcus offers broad praise for Forman, but presents a more optimistic vision for post-industrial satellite towns, and explains the economic opportunities Brexit can bring to these areas. Marcus also describes how antisemitism is by no means confined to the Labour Party, and that Welsh nationalist party Plaid Cymru has a long and shameful history of antisemitism and Nazi appeasement.
Jonny’s guest is a fourth generation smoked salmon purveyor and a wannabe European politician (but not wannabe European Union member). Lance Forman’s standing for the Brexit Party in a European election he says shouldn’t have happened in the first place. In our conversation, he accuses the political class of being fast and loose with extremist rhetoric, while being cowardly in making the big decisions lest they lose votes. He pots a 115-year history of H Forman & Son and describes the challenges of succession, planning and adaptation to modern times. He harks for a return to the days of Thatcher, says Nigel Farage is “Maggie in men’s clothing” and says “antisemite” Jeremy Corbyn’s vision of “Britain as Venezuela” needs to be stopped. He’s proud to be a Jewish member of the party, shrugging off the unpleasant daubing of a swastika on his factory in recent weeks.
