In this bumper edition we begin with Labour's leaked plans to cut welfare spending by £6 billion. £5 billion to come from making it harder to claim Personal Independence Payments. Five Scottish Labour MPs have put their names to a letter supporting these "reforms" as " truly progressive". We look at the cuts, wonder if this could be the final nail in the coffin of Scottish Labour, and Lesley compares and contrasts the UK response to the Ukraine crisis with that of Germany. The USA's change in stance under Trump to the Ukraine war and the Western Alliance in NATO prompted erstwhile Westminster SNP leader Ian Blackford to call for the SNP to switch to a multilateral position on nuclear disarmament. We examine the UK's independent nuclear deterrent and question both its independence and its value as a deterrent.Lesley watched the C4 documentary about Michael Sheen's campaign to not only personally pay off £1 million of debt owed by folk from his local area but also his long term project aimed at highlighting social injustice and the impact of credit finance companies on vulnerable communities.https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2025/mar/10/michael-sheen-interview-secret-million-pound-giveaway-port-talbotOur attention also turns to the USA. Are we deluding ourselves over popular opposition to Trump's policies? Will the Democrats find the spine to use the disruptive tactics employed by the Republicans during the Obama and Biden presidencies? All this plus Elaine C Smith, Brian Cox, and Gone With The Wind. ★ Support this podcast ★

There's been a change in SNP leadership at Westminster with Stephen Flynn and Mhairi Black replacing Ian Blackford and Kirsten Oswald. Was it mere coincidence that this changing of the old guard took place just 10 days after the Supreme Court ruling, and does it signal a galvanization of the party in the same way the ruling appears to have fired up the wider movement? The STUC has published a report just days before the Scottish budget statement suggesting radical, progressive, reforms right across the fiscal landscape. We look at them and speculate on what the response will be from the SNP not just at Holyrood but from the membership. We also wonder why the apparent silence from Scottish Labour.Sir Keir Starmer hasn't been so quiet in his campaign to paint Labour as the party of the Union, getting his lick in first in the SNP blame game if he fails to get a majority at the next General Election. All these plus thoughts on more bravura performances from Mick Lynch of the RMT and Frank Capra's It's A Wonderful Life.  ★ Support this podcast ★

Sue Gray's report into Downing Street partying during Covid lockdowns has finally been published, and it's left the Prime Minister battling for political survival. We'd already seen that fuzzy shot of Boris Johnson with a glass held aloft, and now there's more images featuring convivial drinks and food, one of which features Chancellor Rishi Sunak. The top civil servant's report criticises what's described as an “excessive” drinking culture in Whitehall, which often broke lockdown rules when the rest of Britain was under house arrest, as well as other revealing shocking treatment of cleaning and security staff. The report will make galling reading for many Britons, particularly those prevented from seeing sick relatives because of the rules. At PMQs Mr Johnson repeated his apologies, and said he took responsibility, while Scottish National Party leader Ian Blackford led calls for him to resign. The Evening Standard's political reporter Rachael Burford has been covering developments as they happened. She examines what the Gray report means for the PM's political future and how Downing Street is trying to deflect attention away from the scandal. To say Lesley's travels to and from the Netherlands were a richt trachle is an understatement. But beyond the not inconsiderable personal inconvenience what do they tell us about post Brexit Britain's relationship with the EU?Lots of us struggled to get our meter readings in before the April 1st deadline. Thank goodness for those smart meters then. Not quite. After 2 months of research Lesley uncovered a catalogue of disastrous decisions and non decisions leading to a colossal waste of public money which is in danger of harming, once again, the most vulnerable during the era of soaring energy costs. A series of errors by both Labour and Tory governments made possible by the acceptance of privatisation.Privatisation also looms large in the future of C4. We ask the question why "fix" something that patently isn't broken.Ian Blackford was accused by Kay Burley of sexism when he raised legitimate concerns over the non dom tax status of Akshata Murty ,the wife of Rishi Sunak. We take a look at, the complex residency and tax statuses of both Murty and Sunak and ask why is all this only coming out now, and who benefits in the Tory Party?★ Support this podcast ★

Few areas of policy were more divisive in the lead up to the 2014 Independence Referendum than Pensions. People were told repeatedly that one of the most significant risks of independence was losing pension security and the infamous ‘triple lock'. We know this issue was hugely influential in shaping the views of older voters who naturally were concerned about the perceived risk to their pension contributions. Roll on to 2021, and almost every protection voters were promised by Better Together campaigners have been dismantled – including the promise of triple-lock pensions which the UK Tory Government intends to suspend in 2022. In this episode, Drew talks with SNP Westminster Group Leader Ian Blackford to discuss how the debate around pensions has shaped since the referendum. They discuss the impact of pensions policy on people living in Scotland and discuss the issues facing women born in the 1950s. Many people will be familiar with the WASPI campaign against this injustice. Ian and Drew discuss how the UK Government could and should have made different decisions to support women affected by these changes. People living in Scotland rightly want to know that the pensions they have paid into all their working lives are in safe hands. It is a subject that will dominate the debate ahead of the next referendum, making this episode is a must-listen for campaigners. Follow Ian on Twitter here and on Facebook here. With his incendiary statements on devolution north of the border being a disaster has Boris Johnson, despite today's spin from Tory Central Office, revealed the real intentions of his government and put the nail in the coffin of the Union as well as Gordon Brown's Devo Max? We take a look at this ,and the rather odd coverage of it by the BBC given the incredible disappearing act by not only Douglas Ross but the entire Scottish Conservative party. Lesley had an in depth interview with SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford during last weekend's AUOB online assembly. Just what did it reveal about SNP strategy, or lack of it, for indyref2 and the party's relationship with the broader Yes movement. MP Alyn Smith launched an attack on the SNP Women's Pledge and Common Weal groups accusing them of endangering independence by sowing unnecessary divisons. We reflect on whether this shows a worrying tendency in the party, when allied to the rejection of both Plan B motions at annual conference, to stifle healthy, democratic debate or as Smith claimed risks blowing it(independence)on divisions that needn't exist. The BMJ came out all guns blazing arguing that Covid-19 had "unleashed state corruption on a grand scale", and that government and its appointess were cherry picking or ignoring the science Does this onslaught from the most eminent of publications tell us how seriously we should take the failure of the UK government to tackle the pandemic? Along the way we also discuss what the Daily Mail's front page story about Marcus Rashford tells us about the right wing press, and Scotland's men's football team's triumph on Thursday.

Mercy Baguma was a refugee seeking asylum in Glasgow who had no recourse to public funds. She was utterly reliant on support from friends and charities. Mercy was found dead next to her starving wee boy on Saturday. We make no apologies for beginning this week's podcast with our thoughts on this tragedy. This morning's breaking news was that the Scottish government has withdrawn, as defender, from the Section 30 People's Action court case. We do our level best to navigate the legal waters to try and find out exactly what this means and figure out if, as Andrew Tickell has suggested, this is good money being thrown at a bad case. An unholy alliance of Gove,Galloway, and Andrew Neil have been floating the idea that the franchise for any new independence referendum should be extended to all native born Scots on the UK electoral register. We question why this now, look at why the legitimacy of any such referendums is vital, what legal precedents exist for such a widening of the vote . Wild claims have been made that Boris Johnson was hounded out of his holiday cottage by a baying mob of Scottish nationalists egged on by that noted populist firebrand Ian Blackford- we see you Neil Oliver. Lesley sets the record straight. Jean Freeman and Alex Neil have announced that they won't be standing for re-election in 2021. Is this simply a case of retiral after putting in good shifts or is it a sign of discord and disquiet in the SNP?  We end on a musical note with the ban on music in pubs and restaurants and the singing of the lyrics of Rule Britannia at the Last Night of the Proms. Ian Blackford is the Scottish Nationalist MP for a vast tract of north-west Scotland, and the leader of the SNP’s 48-strong band of Westminster MPs. He is a prominent champion of the cause of Scottish independence, a cause which represents one of the biggest challenges facing prime minister Boris Johnson over the next five years. Back in 2014, Scotland voted by 55% to 45% to remain in the UK. At the time, it was billed as a ‘once in a lifetime’ decision. But since then, Britain has left the EU – against the wishes of a clear majority in Scotland – and the SNP now argues that this material change in circumstances gives Scots the right to another vote on independence. The SNP's grip on power in Scotland is currently unassailable, so a protracted political stand off between Edinburgh and London seems inevitable. The nationalists have plenty of passion, but do they have a winning strategy? (Photo: SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford during Prime Ministers Questions 2019. Credit: PA)

A defiant Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Saturday that he would resist attempts to delay Britain's departure from the European Union beyond the end of the month, though he appeared to have no choice but to seek an extension after Parliament postponed a decision on whether to back his Brexit deal.Johnson said he still aimed to meet the Oct. 31 deadline and would tell EU leaders that delaying Brexit is a bad idea. The bloc said it would wait to hear from the British government about what it wanted to do next. A law passed by Parliament last month gives the government until 11 p.m. (6 p.m. EDT) Saturday to send a letter asking the EU for a three-month postponement."I will not negotiate a delay with the EU and neither does the law compel me to do so," Johnson said. "I will tell our friends and colleagues in the EU exactly what I've told everyone in the last 88 days that I've served as prime minister: that further delay would be bad for this country, bad for the European Union and bad for democracy."French President Emmanuel Macron seemed to agree. Macron's office said he spoke to Johnson by phone and insisted on the need for "quick clarification of the British position on the accord." The president's office said Macron indicated to the British prime minister that "a delay would be in no one's interest."At a rare weekend sitting of Parliament, lawmakers voted 322-306 to withhold their approval of the Brexit deal until legislation to implement it has been passed. The vote sought to ensure that the U.K. cannot crash out of the EU without a divorce deal on the scheduled departure date. Johnson, who struck the agreement with the EU earlier this week, said he was not "daunted or dismayed" by the result and would continue to do all he can to get Brexit done in less than two weeks.Parliament's first weekend sitting since the Falklands War of 1982 had been dubbed "Super Saturday." It looked set to bring Britain's Brexit saga to a head , more than three years after the country's divisive decision to leave the EU.But the government's hopes were derailed when House of Commons Speaker John Bercow said he would allow a vote on an amendment to put the vote on the deal off until another day.The amendment makes support for the deal conditional on passage of the legislation to implement it, something that could take several days or weeks. It also gives lawmakers another chance to scrutinize — and possibly change— the Brexit departure terms while the legislation is in Parliament. The government still hopes it can pass the needed legislation by the end of the month so the U.K. can leave on time. The leader of the House of Commons, Jacob Rees-Mogg, said the government would hold a debate Monday on its Brexit-implementing legislation — effectively a second attempt to secure approval for the deal. It's unclear whether that would be allowed under House of Commons rules against holding repeated votes on the same question. Bercow said he would make a ruling Monday.Despite Johnson's vow not to "negotiate" a Brexit delay, the government has said it will comply with a law passed by Parliament last month ordering it to request an extension if a deal has not been approved by Saturday.European Council President Donald Tusk tweeted late Saturday: "Waiting for the letter. I just talked to PM @BorisJohnson about the situation after the vote in the House of Commons."British opposition lawmakers warned that Johnson must ask for the Brexit extension or face legal consequences."Any failure of a prime minister who thinks he is above the law — well, prime minister, you'll find yourself in court," said Ian Blackford of the Scottish National Party. The vote was welcomed by hundreds of thousands of anti-Brexit demonstrators who marched to Parliament Square, demanding a new referendum on whether Britain should leave the EU or remain. Protesters, many wearing blue berets emblazoned with yellow stars symbolizing the EU flag, poured out of subways and buse...

Conservative leadership frontrunner Boris Johnson has been called a "racist" in the House of Commons and accused of "stoking division". In a fierce assault on the Tory candidate, who is widely expected to be the next prime minister, the SNP's Westminster leader Ian Blackford listed a series of Mr Johnson's past remarks. Mr Blackford claimed the former foreign secretary is "not fit" to enter 10 Downing Street and challenged Theresa May to offer her own view on the man who could replace her. www.dopeblackdads.com #SocialMedia #Podcast #Parenting More Episodes and longer content on:

The Irish backstop is still the hot topic of Brexit debate and Lesley examines the "Let's blame Ireland" narrative which the likes of John Humphrys and Andrew Marr are punting on the BBC. I spent most of Tuesday glued to BBC Parliament trying to follow the series of amendments to the Brexit vote on Theresa May's latest deal. I reflect not only the fate of Ian Blackford's amendment but the disgraceful behaviour of Tory and DUP MPs towards him. We consider, again, the nature of adversarial party politics in the UK and speculate on what, if any, difference a PR system of elections would make. This leads us, neatly, into the Scottish budget, the compromises reached between the SNP and the Scottish Greens to secure agreement in contrast to the refusal of the other three parties to engage with Derek McKay. Lesley hosted Nordic Horizons in Edinburgh earlier this week where the hammer of Fox News, Danish MP Dan Joergensen, was the star turn. As well as all this we pay tribute to Jeremy Hardy, praise Jackson Carlaw and Willie Rennie, and Lesley reckons I might be a hipster.

It's the morning after the night before and as the light at the end of the Brexit tunnel looks increasingly like the No Deal express thundering down the track we try and make sense of it all. Lesley wonders just where Theresa May can now go to get some sort of parliamentary consensus and is this time for the Commons to step in and create that temporary cross-party coalition. As Nicola Sturgeon flies down to London to meet with Ian Blackford and the SNP MPs we inevitably speculate on where this crisis of the British state takes the campaign for Scottish independence. Along the way we discuss the Northern Irish backstop, Section 30 orders, and compare the Prime Minister to those Weebles who wobble but don't fall down (one for the kids there).

You'll be able to get a wheen o' ironing done this week chums as we offer up an extended, hour long, podcast. Westminster takes up the first section with thoughts on Sir Paul Beresford's " I can't understand your accent" nonsense; Ian Blackford's sterling performances at PMQs, and the unsinkable Theresa May's "Christianity". We move on to Nicola's Sturgeon's refusal to take part in the EBU's NewsXchange event after it was confirmed that Steve Bannon would also be attending. The BBC justifying his participation on his leading an "anti -elite" movement. Lesley reflects on this notion of the elite and how Trump and Farage have successfully articulated a reactionary ideology which has tapped into justified grievances. The strike action by Glasgow City Council women workers over the 12-year equal pay scandal, not unsurprisingly, takes up a significant part of the podcast. Lesley and I try to work our way through the competing narratives and reach different conclusions. Before you shout"Fight, fight!", it's all very civilised. This is in stark contrast to my reaction to the news that she's planning on going to see the Queen movie, Bohemian Rhapsody.
