With this month marking 15 years since the signing of the historic Conservative - Liberal Democrat coalition agreement, and given the fractured five-party politics of 2025, what can be learned from five chaotic days in 2010, that led to five years of surprisingly stable government? To discuss how it all came together, and what stopped it from falling apart, host Alain Tolhurst is joined by one of the people who helped negotiate the historic deal between the Tories and the Lib Dems, along with two members of the House of Lords, who in their past lives were at the heart of that 2010-2015 government, as well as a professor who quite literally wrote the book on the coalition.David Laws was the Lib Dem MP for Yeovil from 2001 to 2015, and was part of his party's team that thrashed out an agreement after the general election gave no party a majority to govern, and Baroness Kate Fall, who began working for David Cameron after he became leader, worked as deputy chief of staff inside Number 10 when he entered Downing Street.Lord Jonny Oates, a Lib Dem peer, was chief of staff for Nick Clegg during his time as deputy Prime Minister, and finally Robert Hazell, Professor of Government and the Constitution at University College London, and the co-author of the book The Politics of Coalition, joins the panel too.To sign up for our newsletters click herePresented by Alain Tolhurst, produced by Nick Hilton and edited by Ewan Cameron for Podot

The Do One Better! Podcast – Philanthropy, Sustainability and Social Entrepreneurship
Between 2010 and 2015, David served in the UK's Coalition Government as Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Schools Minister, and Cabinet Office Minister. Whilst Schools Minister he was responsible for policy areas including all capital and revenue funding, the Pupil Premium, accountability and policy on teachers and leadership. Since 2015, David has been Chairman of the Education Policy Institute. In this episode we focus on narrowing the education gap between rich and poor and delve into various areas, including creating and communicating a strong evidence base, engaging with policymakers and the media, the possible introduction of Value Added Tax to independent schools, and quite a bit more. As someone who served as Schools Minister, David has key insight on how to engage with policymakers effectively and ensuring research reaches decision-makers at the right time. Translating and summarising complex research, and boiling it down to the policy impact, is actually not the challenging part. The bigger challenge is in ensuring policymakers take note of the research even when it doesn't align with their own views and, also, in ensuring research cuts right through policymakers' busy diaries and grabs their attention. Narrowing the education gap between rich and poor is one of David's key focus areas. He explains how in the UK we have some of the best universities in the world, but there is a tail of underachievement which is very long and highly associated with income and social class, which is the weakness of the UK education system. If we can close the gap between rich and poor we'd have an education system that would genuinely be one of the very best in the world. The COVID pandemic fundamentally changed the face of the modern workplace. For the first time in our lifetime offices were forced to close, and many companies had to act swiftly to adopt alternative working methods if they wanted to stay productive. With most workers trapped at home, working from kitchen tables and living room sofas, the strengths of a workplace were thrown into sharp relief. The sense of community, collaborative working and creativity were all but put on hold. On the other hand, the pandemic highlighted many of the shortcomings and the outdated attitudes surrounding our typical way of working. Increased flexibility and work/life balance were a huge attraction to new talent. Since that time, many industries have adjusted to a more modern way of working, and in this episode of Fisher German Talks, we're focused on just that!. Today we'll be taking a deep look into the face of the modern workplace, the role of ‘the office', how hybrid working is becoming the new expected norm and what this means going forward. On the podcast today, and our final episode for series 2, David Laws, a partner at Matthews & Goodman, is joined by Atul Bansal – founder of The Sheila Bird Studio. Sheila Bird aims to help businesses relocate and re-brand their image.

The Pacific Grove Concours Auto Rally is among the most popular free-to-spectator events in the celebration of all things automotive during Monterey Auto Week. The trek through portions of the picturesque Monterey Peninsula is scheduled Friday, Aug. 16. It began in 1995 with automotive legend Caroll Shelby participating to help raise money for charity. The Pacific Grove Auto Rally is celebrating its 25ht anniversary. Image courtesy of Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce. To celebrate the rally's 25th anniversary, the legendary Cobra (Shelby's creation) Cobra will be the marque for the parade of drivers and their classics, sports cars and vintage machines. David Laws, a key event organizer, is our guest on Episode #99 of The Weekly Driver Podcast. Co-hosts Bruce Aldrich and James Raia discuss with Laws the history of the event and the iconic vehicles involved through the years. As organizers state, "Even if you don't own Cobra, join us to help celebrate our Silver Anniversary. Enjoy the show in historic downtown, followed by a coastal drive along scenic 17-Mile Drive through Pebble Beach." "On return to town, all are welcome to enjoy a barbecue dinner in Chautauqua Hall. Bring your family and friends to discover our great restaurants and fine shops." As per tradition, spectators are encouraged to witness the rally along the course. There may be a Cobra or two in the parade, but as Laws explains, participating vehicles are as varied as the automobile industry. Laws details how the rally is planned in cooperation with city officials and law enforcement jurisdictions. He recalls some of the unusual circumstances that have occurred during the rally's tenure. It's not too late to participate in the rally, observe the vehicles or help celebrate after the event in the community barbecue. Julian Astle, Daisy Christodoulou, Peter Hyman and David Laws consider how to reform education so that it prepares young people not just to write a good exam, but to live a good life. Schools need to be accountable to taxpayers and parents to ensure money is well spent and children well taught. But with the accountability system dominating so much of what England’s state funded schools now do, are we in danger of becoming so pre-occupied by inspection judgements and performance targets that we lose sight of education’s real purposes? And with our obsession with performance data creating strong incentives for schools to game the system and teach to the test, are we in danger of narrowing and hollowing out the education our young people receive? This event was recorded live at The RSA on Thursday 16th November 2017. Discover more about this event here: https://www.thersa.org/events/2017/11/beyond-education-by-numbers
It's forty five years since the commercial introduction of the first microcomputer chip set which evolved into the modern microprocessor, changing computers from tools for scientists into the engines which power today's electronic consumer appliances. So how did the silicon chip evolve and where might this revolution be heading next? Bridget Kendal is joined by four distinguished computer and internet pioneers who helped spearhead some of the most important inventions of the computer age. Vinod Dham invented the first Pentium micro-processor and went on to become Vice-President at the world's largest chip maker-Intel. His early work in this field earned him the nickname “The Father of the Pentium chip.” Sophie Wilson's computer design was used to build the Acorn Micro-Computer. She also led the development of the ARM microprocessor, found in over half of the world's consumer electronics. David Laws is a technology historian and a curator of the Computer History Museum in California. Dame Wendy Hall is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Southampton in the UK. For the past five years Britains Liberal Democrat Party have been the junior partner in a coalition with the Conservatives. They have helped deliver a stable government and have wielded power for the first time in their modern history. Yet the electorate seems ready to condemn them for it in the coming British general election. We speak to Liberal Democrat government minister David Laws.
