George Parker, political editor of the Financial Times, looks back at the political week in which the Conservative party's biggest donor, Frank Hester, was reported to have used racist language about Diane Abbott, Britain's first black woman MP. It overshadowed a new government announcement on extremism which was unveiled by Communities Secretary Michael Gove. To discuss both those stories George is joined by one of the Conservative party's most prominent black politicians, Shaun Bailey, who was a former candidate for Mayor of London and now sits in the House of Lords, and Lord Mann, a former Labour MP who is now the government's independent adviser on antisemitism. Following news that the government intends to bring forward a mechanism to ban foreign state ownership of UK newspapers George is joined by Baroness Stowell, Conservative Chair of the Lords Communication and Digital Committee, and Lionel Barber, the former editor of the Financial Times. The Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, was quizzed by MPs this week about his Budget in which he made a further cut to National Insurance. Lord Macpherson, a former Permanent Secretary to the Treasury, discusses whether the Chancellor could phase out national insurance altogether and looks at the economic situation in this election year and beyond. And, after a torrid week, are the wheels coming off the Number Ten operation? And can anything lift the darkening mood among Tory MPs? To discuss that George brings together Sir Craig Oliver, former Downing Street Director of Communications, and Katy Balls, political editor of The Spectator.

May 6th will mark regional local elections in the UK, to include the London mayoral election. Considering that 4 of the 5 of us are based in London, this does in fact affect us. However, all polling indicates that Sadiq Khan will win again on a platform of More Cops and handing all decisions to property developers, with the remaining candidates all basically wanting More Cops. Sian Berry? Bad. Laurence Fox? Don't make me laugh. Shaun Bailey? Joke. Brian Rose? Okay, he's extremely bad also, but that man is a verifiable content machine. So, we decided on a platform of 'vote if you want to do but don't really expect much either way' and then decided to talk about Brian Rose's completely bonkers life force. Hope you enjoy! Episodes like this are why this podcast exists. Shaun Bailey is the Conservative candidate for Mayor of London, but his life could have taken a very different path. He tells Matt about how close he came to getting involved in gangs at a young age and the role that his mother, uncle and Star Wars played in keeping him away from a life of crime. Shaun also explains how growing up black and working class led him to join the Conservatives. This is a thought-provoking, frank and entertaining exploration of how our politics is born out of our personal experiences - and not always in the way that others might presume. The Evening Standard's City Hall editor Ross Lydall joins the podcast with two weeks to go until London hits the ballot box for the mayoral election. He's been speaking to both Sadiq Khan and Shaun Bailey who have been campaigning in the city, with the Conservative candidate making up some ground in the polls although the Labour incumbent is far ahead. We also hear from the Greens' Sian Berry and Lib Dems' Luisa Porritt who are trying to pick up votes as the big day looms. Residents in a “targeted area” within SE16 in Southwark are being urged to get a test after a case of the mutation was detected there. Additional testing sites, some of them mobile, are also being rolled out in Wandsworth and Lambeth where dozens of cases of the SA variant virus have been identified.London Mayor Sadiq Khan, a Wandsworth resident, is one of those who have been tested as has his Tory election rival Shaun Bailey who got a Covid vaccine in the area this week. I spent more time in a modest queue of journalists, observing Shaun Bailey than I did actually talking to him directly. But it was just as instructive. Shaun is the best-placed candidate to beat Sadiq Khan in the London mayoral elections on May 6th 2021. But what chance does he have? He’s not being particularly well-resourced by his party, which means it’s down largely to his own campaigning. But as you’ll hear, he counts himself as a characteristic London “hustler”. He certainly made an impression on me with his honesty and clear sight. With many thanks to my friend, Hendon Ward councillor Nizza Fluss, who personally organized his appearance with representatives of Shomrim and Hatzola at Hendon and Golders Green, Shaun answered my questions with clarity and brevity. We talk about his vision of “inclusion”, which includes Jewish people, his policies on ULEZ charging, policing and stations. And then we discuss “disgusting” Israeli Apartheid Week, his positive action after taking part in the “March of the Living” and why a trade mission to Israel is so key to restoring the fortunes of London’s post-pandemic economy. And he says Sadiq Khan and Labour have some way to go before Jewish voters could feel comfortable again voting for them.
Shaun Bailey, the Conservative candidate for London Mayor, joins Christopher Hope to pitch why he believes he's the 'fresh start' the capital needs. The former advisor to David Cameron quickly dismisses the idea of Sadiq Khan's drugs review, claims that the outer London congestion charge will drive more people onto the roads, and calls for more bobbies on the beat. Plus he reveals what public nuisance is his personal pet peeve. Also on the show: Chris talks to writer Andrew McQuillan about the situation in Northern Ireland and the many factors, including Brexit, that have culminated in the recent unrest. And flying the flag for the under 30s Chopper's fans, Chris asks the Telegraph's Science Editor Sarah Knapton to break down this week's news about younger people not having the AstraZeneca vaccine.Read Sarah Knapton's 'Britain will achieve herd immunity on Monday': https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/04/07/exclusive-britain-will-pass-covid-herd-immunity-threshold-monday/ |Read Andrew McQuillan's 'Why is nobody talking about Northern Ireland?': https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/northern-ireland-s-dangerous-drift |For 30 days' free access to The Telegraph: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/chopper |Listen to Mad World: https://www.playpodca.st/madworld |Email: chopperspolitics@telegraph.co.uk |Twitter: @chopperspodcast |
The government's Commission on Race and Ethnic Disparities has released its landmark report on racism, commissioned in the wake of the Black Lives Matter protests that swept the U.K. and the world. While the 264-page report found Britain was not institutionally racist, it did say the U.K. is not a 'post-racial society' and outright racism, especially online, persists. Shaun Bailey, Conservative candidate for London Mayor and a prominent black politician in Britain, tells Bloomberg Westminster's Caroline Hepker about his own experiences of racism and why he thinks the concept of institutional racism can deflect from personal responsibility. Plus, Alba Kapoor, policy officer at the Runnymede Trust, says it's nothing more than a fig leaf from the government that fails to address deep-rooted issues.
The Conservative candidate for London Mayor, Shaun Bailey's told the Evening Standard he'll close the gap on Sadiq Khan ahead of the city making its vote on May 6th. He spoke to Ross Lydall, who joins the podcast to assess the Tory hopeful's chances after our Opinium survey of 1,100 Londoners revealed Mr Khan leads by 53 per cent to 28 per cent on first preferences. Also, political reporter Sophia Sleigh's spoken to historian Dan Snow about proposals for a Covid-19 memorial at Whitehall. But what would something like that look like and is London the best place for it? See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Topics discussed include the early days of big bait fishing, a 44 pound tournament limit, giant sunfish, and the craziness of Lake Havasu during spring break. The guys also squeeze in some Q&A before the interview.
Campaign journalists Gurjit and Jeremy discuss ITV's recent anti-racism ad that was in support (https://www.campaignlive.co.uk/article/pick-week-itv-shows-means-true-word/1695186) of dance group diversity. The ad received praise following complaints about the group's recent Black Lives Matter performance on Britain’s Got Talent (the complaints were later dismissed by Ofcom). They also unpick London mayoral candidate Shaun Bailey's call to allow sponsorship deals for tube stations (https://www.campaignlive.co.uk/article/tfl-sell-names-its-stations-brands/1695130) , in a deal that could be worth £100 million. Then producer Ben speaks to recent graduates from the Watford Course and SCA 2.0, about their experiences of graduating into a global pandemic, including the pair who set up (https://www.campaignlive.co.uk/article/watford-grads-fight-hiring-freeze-setting-own-agency/1694654) G.U.A.P.P.P Creative Studios, or 'Give Us A Placement Pretty Please'. (https://www.campaignlive.co.uk/article/watford-grads-fight-hiring-freeze-setting-own-agency/1694654) Munraj Singh Chawla and Rachael Simões (https://munrajandrachael.co.uk/) , talented graduates from SCA 2.0, recently described the process as 'emotionally draining', but remain hopeful and proactive in trying to find placements. Watford graduates Paloma Gardiner and Alistair Milne (https://www.guap-creative-studios.com/) also came up with a creative solution by forming their own agency, GUAP.P.P Creative Studios, in a bid to earn some experience. Setting up the company cost them just £12, and has lead to interest from agencies. Running order: 2:17 - ITV doubles down on Diversity with tactical ad 7:39 - Should TfL change Tube station names for sponsor? 11:34 - Aspiring ad creatives discuss tactics for beating the hiring freeze 42:15 - Ad review, featuring B&Q (https://www.campaignlive.co.uk/article/b-q-build-life-uncommon/1694924) , Heinz (https://www.campaignlive.co.uk/article/heinz-silence-rumble-bbh-london/1694718) and Cadbury Dairy Milk (https://www.campaignlive.co.uk/article/cadbury-dairy-milk-the-originals-vccp/1695176) . The opening of Crossrail has been delayed yet again until the first half of 2022 with at least another £450 million added to the total bill. In yet another “deeply disappointing” setback, the team responsible for the 60-mile east-west route across London said social-distancing rules meant only half the normal number of workers could be on site. Conservative London Mayor candidate Shaun Bailey tells us Sadiq Khan needs to take control, and the new TfL Commissioner should be "put on blast". The “breathtaking” £2,000,000,000,000 landmark was passed last month when the Treasury borrowed a further £26.7 billion to support the economy with emergency coronavirus measures such as the jobs furlough scheme. But the Evening Standard's Jonathan Prynn says the problems have been building for more than a decade. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Katy Balls hosts the highlights from Sunday's interviews. With Boris Johnson, Matt Hancock, Rachel Reeves and Shaun Bailey.
The Shadow Justice Minister David Lammy told Justin Webb that “now is the time for action, not more reviews” and the Prime Minister should implement the findings of previous reviews on inequality. Boris Johnson announced on Sunday that he will establish a commission on inequality in response to the Black Lives Matter protests. The commission will be run out of the Cabinet Office and report to the Prime Minister, and would be asked to finish its work by Christmas. Justin also heard from the former Conservative Mayoral candidate Shaun Bailey, who said the Government would need time to decide on the best course of action. Also in this podcast Mishal Husain spoke to Lord Woolley, Advisory Chair of the Government's Race Disparity Unit, who welcomed the new commission. Mishal also heard from Hilary McGrady, Director General of the National Trust, about their report examining the links between the trust’s historic homes and slavery. Credit: Reuters

Apologies for the fact this week’s podcast is a little bit late. But in my defence, both time and the calendar have lost all meaning.Anyway. Something like a third of the world is currently in lockdown to deal with the coronavirus crisis, including Skylines’ little corner of it. So on the assumption that she didn’t have anywhere more fun to be right now, this seemed a good moment to invite my former co-host Stephanie Boland to Skype back into the podcast for the first time in about a year and a half. We discuss the strangeness of London, and its entirely empty transport system, in lockdown; how the UK government is doing at handling the crisis; and how it may, or may not, change the world and its politics. If you enjoyed this one and are a relatively recent subscriber to Skylines, then why not check out some episodes from Stephanie’s era as co-host? You can hear more of her in episodes 15-38, plus 51, 63, 100, and probably some more that I’ve forgotten because it was ages ago.On a different matter – the pandemic has meant a year’s delay to all this year’s English mayoral elections. That sadly means that the mayoral walks series is almost certainly finished, for the moment. But I nonetheless hope to persuade Sadiq Khan and Shaun Bailey to go for a walk with me at some point in the future. It’s good to have goals, isn’t it?Skylines is the podcast from CityMetric, the New Statesman's cities site. It's presented by Jonn Elledge and produced by Nick Hilton. The mayoral walks mini-series began in an act of trolling. Rory Stewart launched his campaign to be mayor of London through the unusual strategy of walking all over London and tweeting about it; I have spent large chunks of my life walking all over London and tweeting about it; Twitter at large suggested we combine forces, and maybe turn it into a podcast. And, once a couple of other candidates had helpfully put the pressure on by offering to go for a walk with me too, Stewart agreed. And suddenly what had started by taking the mick on Twitter because I was bored had become an actual thing.Alas, when the day finally came we were defeated by London’s famous weather: on the appointed morning, Friday 28 February, it was bucketing down, which isn’t really a good match with the Skylines recording equipment, also known as “my phone”. So instead this podcast was recorded in a cafe in South Kensington.During its course, I asked Rory why he felt London was crying out for a former Tory Cabinet minister as its independent mayor; why he had chosen to campaign by walking and, more recently, asking to sleep one night a week in other Londoners’ houses; and whether he thinks he really has a hope of defeating Sadiq Khan. All that, and we also chatted about his proposals to sort out the capital’’s housing and transport systems, and Rory ate some porridge, too.Incidentally, there’s a moment in this one when the candidate is unexpectedly enthusiastic about my proposals that we start giving the Overground network different line names and we have to stop talking about it before it takes over the entire podcast. Though we did discuss it for ten minutes after recording. This may be the last of my mayoral “walks”. I’m talking to the staffs of both Khan and his Tory rival Shaun Bailey, and am open to approaches from other candidates desperate for coverage... But at time of writing nothing else has been agreed. We shall see. If you happen to see someone running for mayor, send them my way, would you?Skylines is the podcast from CityMetric, the New Statesman's cities site. Will coronavirus wreck your holiday? British Airways has cancelled all trips into and out of Italy. Quantas has cut passenger capacity by a quarter around the world. Popular destinations like Spain are reporting huge spikes in the number of people infected. On Broadway in New York, desperate producers are slashing the prices of tickets to top shows in an attempt to lure customers back to empty theatres. The Evening Standard's Jonathan Prynn tells the leader why the impact of Covid-19 on the tourism industry has been “greater than any terrorism scare” and it's likely to get worse.London Mayoral Election PollThe first poll of 2020 shows Sadiq Khan enjoying a huge lead in the London mayoral election. With 49 per cent, Mr Khan is nearly 25 points ahead of his closest rival, the Conservative's Shaun Bailey. Independent Rory Stewart is even further back on 13 per cent, while the Lib Dems and Greens are registering single figures. Our political editor Joe Murphy says with two months to go, the challengers need to raise their games.Warhol at Tate ModernA blockbuster Andy Warhol exhibition at Tate Modern's bringing his classic works to London, along with exhibits that haven't been seen in decades. Does it shed new light on one of modern history's greatest artists? The Evening Standard's critic Ben Luke says ‘not quite.' He's given it three stars in his review, and tells the Leader podcast why. Nims Obunge loves an acronym. Hope stands for “Helping Other People Excel”, while Dream means “Develop Real Examples and Mentors”, he says. As a preacher and pastor, Nims is passionate about motivating his people to live for God and make a difference in their communities. His Christian roots are evident. He talks about growing up in the context of 6am family prayer meetings and how he's gone onto lead Freedom's Ark church in north London. Best known for founding The Peace Alliance and working at various levels of society including working with the police to tackle gun crime and helping to rehabilitate prisoners, Nims isn't a stranger to the world of politics and public service. And he's unfazed by the suggestion that independent candidates like him are at a disadvantage. Speaking of the upcoming election on 7 May he says, “I know I can win”. Sadiq Khan has not delivered for Londoners, according to Shaun Bailey, the Conservative candidate for London Mayor. Plus, Bloomberg's David Merritt discusses the government's plans to slash unskilled immigration, and Alex Morales looks at those still hoping Britain will stay closely aligned to the EU.
Can UK banks survive in the era of the US megabank? There are worrying signs with HSBC announcing 35,000 job losses, just days after a similar move at RBS. The Evening Standard's business news editor Alex Lawson explains why it's so important the UK negotiates hard with Europe for the city to remain the region's finance capital.Has Sadiq Khan found a backdoor to EU Citizenship?London Mayor Sadiq Khan tells the Leader he has a solution for remain voters, mourning the loss of the right to live and work in the European Union. He's been in Brussels trying to persuade Brexit negotiators to allow ‘associate citizenship.' But the idea's been dismissed as ‘unworkable' by mayoral rival Rory Stewart, and a ‘gimmick' by Shaun Bailey. London Fashion Week: ReviewedIs green the new black? London Fashion Week opened with a call for more environmentally sustainable practices in an industry that's reportedly responsible for 10 per cent of the world's carbon emissions. There's all-out war between Republicans and Democrats in Washington, and Donald Trump appears to be winning. Nancy Pelosi may have ripped up the print-out of his State of the Union address, but the President's approval ratings are at an all-time high and the impeachment trial against him is likely to end in his acquittal. Emerging from the debacle of the Democrats' botched Iowa Caucus however, is a challenger whose campaign is being likened to Barack Obama's. We speak to Evening Standard columnist Philip Delves Broughton about the outsider who could be making strides towards the White House, Pete Buttigieg.Shaun Bailey's pitch for London MayorConservative Shaun Bailey is currently in the running for the London mayoral election. In a special interview Shaun Bailey speaks to The Leader podcast about the big problems facing Londoners, such as violent knife crime, transport and housing. Mr Bailey explains how he proposes to improve these areas, such as bringing in record policing numbers which he says the current mayor of London, Sadiq Kahn, removed. He explains why he will raise Transport for London fares to improve public transport, and reveals why being close to homeless himself gave him a personal understanding why housing and the cost of living needs to be fairer. Comment editor Susannah Butter also interviewed Shaun Bailey where for the first time he spoke about the sudden death of his brother. Please make sure to subscribe, rate and leave a comment.INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT:Shaun Bailey 0:04 I think when you speak to Londoners or you know, when people sit in their living room, what are the big issues for London? This is what I call the Trinity really. There's crime, there's housing and there's environment and for me, environment includes transport as well. Transport and environment are intimately wrapped up in London. But they're what I consider the trinity of the big ticket issues we're facing in London. David Marsland 0:23 All of those have been covered quite extensively in the Evening Standard. But recently, we've done a lot of front pages about violent crime in London. How do you solve that? Shaun Bailey 0:33 To me, it's quite clear. We need a tough and a tender approach. So on the tough end you hear me talking about a record amount of police from the money we already have in City Hall. You hear me talk about new technologies to help with stop and search, a full scan and search - you can scale up in people's pockets. And also hear me talk about giving the police the backing and the finances to do the job. I think our current mayor talked about, you know, reducing stop and search as much as he could when he became mayor. I've always felt that as a bit of a problem because although stop and search isn't the be all and end all by any means, it does send a signal alongside decent patrolling, that the police are here and visible. And that's how you you know, that's how you get across that no, it is not the Wild West, you... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This week, it’s all about mayors, and also someone who the smart money says will never become one.I’ve dragged Stephen Bush back into the podcasting catacomb to discuss Shaun Bailey, the Conservative candidate to be the next mayor of London. Bailey, alas, declined an invitation to appear on Skylines earlier this year - but given how well his contact with journalists is going at the moment, it’s by no means clear this was a mistake.Anyway: Stephen and I discuss his faltering campaign, explore why it’s going so badly, and ask if the Conservative party has any way out. Also, in this week’s ‘Ask The Experts’ segment with the Centre for Cities, I ask director of policy Paul Swinney: do mayors actually matter?Skylines is the podcast from the New Statesman’s cities site, CityMetric. The Tories have been courting ethnic minority votes for decades – yet black and Asian voters still choose to go with Labour. In this week's Telegram podcast, Shaun Bailey, a black Conservative who works in the Cabinet Office, discusses this sensitive topic with Janet Daley, the American-born descendant of Russian Jewish immigrants. They reach some uncomfortable conclusions – not just for the Tories but also for Left-wing educationalists who specialise in exploiting racial grievances.
