Horror hosts emerged nationwide after Vampira burst onto the late night Los Angeles television scene in 1954. In 1971, Nashville's WSM-TV launched their own with Creature Feature Saturday hosted by Sir Cecil Creape. Decades later on July 1, 1999, Larry Underwood, inspired by the legendary Creape, created his Dr. Gangrene alter-ego and produced his first episode of Chiller Cinema.Today we welcome the physician of fright Dr. Gangrene and Horror Host Hall of Famer Underwood to tell us about the history of Nashville horror hosts, the Gangrene origin story, and Underwood's fascination with monsters, fear, and the horror host genre of cornball humor. This episode was produced by Khalil Ekulona and Elizabeth Burton.GUEST Larry Underwood | Actor, writer, producer Dr. Gangrene | TV horror movie host
Joining me tonight is Nashville horror host, and legend, Larry Underwood, also known as Dr. Gangrene. Dr. Gangrene exploded onto the airwaves on July 1, 1999 on the Hendersonville, TN Public-access television station. Chiller Cinema, as the show was known, quickly expanded into Nashville, TN where it aired on Community Access Channel 19. Chiller Cinema was the first program to broadcast live out of the new Public, Educational, and Government Access television building where CH 19 broadcast from. Chiller Cinema was soon seen on other Public-access television stations across the country, making Underwood one of the first horror hosts to self-syndicate his program. The show won much praise and accolades and was named one of the country's top 20 cable access TV programs by Gear Magazine. Dr. Gangrene continues to stay busy, producing a weekly horror host TV program Dr. Gangrene's Cinetarium, which airs weekly on Nashville's NECAT Arts CH9 on Comcast out of Nashville, TN, Saturdays at 9pm central. He is a regular guest at the Wonderfest convention held annually in Louisville, Kentucky, where he hosts live movies every year. He also occasionally writes articles for Scary Monsters Magazine.
Public access television is arguably the most intimate and personal form of programming offered in our country. Legendary for its low budget production quality, public access TV shows regular people who have an interest in creating a television show. Want a show about popular and off the wall sports? Check. How about a show about religion and spirituality? Check. Maybe you want to do a show about odd-ball and rarely seen movies? Check. Public access possesses all manner of television. It's television that reflects a city or community. NECAT is Nashville's public access network. Recently it was added under the umbrella of the Public Library and will be looking for a new home in 2025. What is it like to create a show on NECAT? How does one get started? Who are the people whom NECAT helped to share their voice with anyone who will watch? Even at 3:38 am? We'll talk with a representative from NECAT and several producers and learn about their vision for television and the stories they tell. First, we'll hear from WPLN afternoon host, Marianna Bacallao about the latest on Yellow Freight. Guests: Cameron McCasland, Studio Director at NECAT Kyna "Bam" Ealey, host of Cultureville and writer and editor of The City Mixtape Dan Meredith, host of Heartland Liberty Taffiney Williams, host of Would You Marry You? Larry Underwood, host of Dr. Gangrene This episode was produced by Khalil Ekulona and Elizabeth Burton.

This week, Derek checks in with the Physician of Fright, the one and only Dr. Gangrene (aka Larry Underwood) before exploring horrors From Beyond the Grave (dir. Kevin Conner). This 1974 portmanteau film features one of Monster Kid Radio's favorite Peters, and Derek and Larry can't stop gushing about the Cushing. Also, in the grand comic book tradition of crossovers, this week's episode of MKR crosses over with the most recent episode of Disney, Indiana, when Derek chats with DI's Tracey and Scott Morris about two graphic novels combining classic Disney characters with classic horror literature. November 2nd, 1870. North of Abilene, Kansas. Respected lawman T J Smith, nicknamed "Bear River Smith," is brutally murdered while serving an arrest warrant for murder. The desperados responsible, Andrew McConnell and Moses Miles, flee on horseback. Thomas J. Smith, Police Chief, Abilene, Kansas image from Kansas Memory site -- Kansas State Historical Society https://www.kansasmemory.org/ This is a wonderful site with hundreds of images related to Kansas history. Great pictures of the Old West. Sources The links to the sources used for this case are listed below. There’s a very good book called Abilene Lawmen, by Larry Underwood (available on Amazon). I really like the way it paints a picture frontier life in Kansas cow towns like Abilene. There’s also an episode of American Lawmen called “The Two Fisted Marshal of Abilene” on PBS, that reenacts the events of this case. There’s a version on youtube – (if you don’t mind constant ads) If you google “Thomas Smith Abilene,” there are a number of websites about his life and death. There were a couple that I really www.truewestmagazine.com and www.legendsofamerica.com. The primary newspapers that had relevant articles were the Abilene Chronicle (now the Reflector-Chronicle) and the Topeka Commonwealth (which was bought out by the current Topeka paper, the Capitol-Journal.) Larry Underwood and I have known each other for nearly thirty years. We spent our younger days getting into various types of trouble together but don't get to hang out as much as we'd like anymore. So when Larry suggested covering the blaxploitation horror film DR. BLACK MR. HYDE (1976) I realized that it just might be a good time to reconnect over some great 1970's cinema! Good call, Larry! In recent years Mr. Underwood has become best known in Nashville as TV horror host Dr. Gangrene, a role he has played on and off for more than 16 years. As cool as that might be I'm an even bigger fan of his ongoing YouTube series The Fantastic Films of Vincent Price in which he is covering every single film with an appearance by the great actor. I highly recommend these fun examinations of Price's career and look forward to the 1970's era. Cool stuff! In this episode the two of us settle in to look at DR. BLACK MR. HYDE and take the time to discuss the surprisingly small sub-genre of which is a part. I really thought there were a LOT more films of this type! Regardless, this film is a good representative example of the genre with some great performances and a complicated main character at it's center. The movie has a few variations on the classic Robert Louise Stevenson story playing with expectations about motivations in some neat ways. Bernie Casey and Rosalind Cash are the big name stars but it's Alabama born actor Ji-Tu Cumbuka as a police officer investigating Hyde's crimes that steals every scene he is given. I would have been happy to see a sequel film just about him and his cop partner. If you have any comments or questions about the film or the podcast the email address is thebloodypit@gmail.com. Let us know what your favorite Blaxploitation Horror film is or your favorite Blaxpolitation film of any sub-genre. Any other TRUCK TUNRER fans out there? Thanks for downloading and listening.

Larry Underwood has been nominated for an Emmy, won two Rondos, been drawn into THE Dick Tracy comic strip, appeared on Spike TV, and was written about in USA Today. And just this year, Larry was inducted into the Horror Host Hall of Fame, all from just getting an itch to honor his own childhood horror host Sir Cecil Creape and be creative himself. But more than just his alter-ego Dr. Gangrene, Larry showed his creativity from a young age, including starting his own independent comic book publishing company. He sits down with Kurt to discuss his journey, his feelings on horror hosting, and how this strange outlook came to be... You're never going to hear a nicer guy, we promise.
With his fifth published novel Stephen King went big--a tale about God and demons with the backdrop of a dystopian future. Involving fears both realistic and fantastic, many King fans cite this as the author's best work to date. Now Arnie continues his reviews of all King's works with this multi-part podcast series reviewing The Stand. In the second part of this podcast series Arnie explores the heroic characters featured in The Stand, including Stuart Redmond, Fran Goldsmith, Larry Underwood, and Nick Andros. He also analyzes the deadly superflu Captain Trips, and the start of the novel's biblical allegories.
Dr. Gangrene (aka Larry Underwood) returns to Monster Kid Radio to talk about one of his favorite actors - Vincent Price. For the past few months, the good doctor has been making his way through Price's entire filmography and discussing the films as part of his YouTube series. He's made it through the 40s, seen a few movies he's never watched before, and gained an even greater appreciation for Vincent Price's career. Vincent Price appeared on television near the end of the 40s hosting and narrating an adaptation of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, and Derek and Larry talk about that a bit as well.
