203: Three Reasons for Being Stingy in Sharing Your Story

You Were Made for This

There's a school of thought out there that says to make friends it's important to be vulnerable by sharing your story. Some call it “being authentic.” Yet it's been my experience that sharing your story when someone is trying to share there's may end up pushing people away. Some would call that being self-centered. Today's episode, though, is about three reasons to be stingy in sharing your story. But before we get into today's episode, here's what this podcast is all about.   Welcome to You Were Made for This If you find yourself wanting more from your relationships, you've come to the right place. Here you'll discover practical principles you can use to experience the life-giving relationships you were made for. I'm your host, John Certalic, an award-winning author and relationship coach. I'm here to help you find more joy in the relationships God designed for you. To access all past and future episodes, go to the bottom of this page to the yellow "Subscribe" button, then enter your name and email address in the fields above it.  The episodes are organized chronologically and are also searchable by topics, categories, and keywords. In the last episode If the phrase “be stingy in sharing your story” sounds familiar it's probably because you heard it used in episode 202, “The Best Stories.” It was in reference to the listening advice shared in the interview I did with Linda Crouch, a retired missionary friend. She talked about her friend Meg who listened well to Linda talking about her recent trip to Nigeria. Even though Meg was a missionary herself, she was stingy in sharing her own story. So Linda had all the time she needed to tell hers. I love this word, “stingy.”  I never thought of it being a good word with a positive connotation to it. Ebenezer Scrooge in Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol come to mind when I hear the word “stingy.”   But in the context of relationships, “stingy in sharing our story” is a great principle on several levels, when used properly. Here are three reasons why: Being stingy in sharing your story honors the person sharing there's In any meaningful conversation you can't have two stories going on at once. Unfortunately, though, you see this happening all too often. Tune in any TV or radio news show with 3 or more hosts and invariably you hear them talking over each other, fighting for air time. A meaningful conversation requires someone to take the high road by being quiet and listening. We honor people when we relinquish our turn to be the center of attention. It gives voice to people who may not have had a voice. It's a biblical principle as well. James 1:19, that familiar passage says, “…be quick to listen and slow to speak.” When we take that to heart and put it into practice it manifests another Biblical concept we read in Romans 12:10, “…take delight in honoring each other.” Being stingy in sharing your story brings out the best in you A second reason why being stingy with your story when someone is sharing there's is a great practice is because it brings out the best in you. The best in you displays relational hospitality, where you invite people into interaction with you by giving them the floor and allowing them to be the focus of attention. To let someone go first in sharing their story is an act of humility, which is always found in the best of our character traits. It's a sacrifice to let someone have the air time we would like. Letting someone else have the spot light without interruption from you models what good listening looks like. And when we model something for others that will bring out the best in them, it brings out the best in ourselves. Being stingy in sharing your story is an antidote to our loneliness As counterintuitive as it sounds, being stingy in sharing your story is an antidote to loneliness. When you hold back on talking about yourself it creates an opportunity to learn about someone else and a possible point of connection based on their life, not yours. We have a missionary friend who grew up in a large family where everyone talked. In order to be heard she learned how to fight for airtime by talking a lot herself. While that skill served her well as a child, it did just the opposite as an adult. Instead of drawing people to herself, talking a great deal pushed people away. Consequently, she was often lonely. Another thing. When we hold back on talking about ourself so that others can share their story it creates the possibility of broadening our world, which tends to dissipate loneliness.   Now I'll be the first to admit that many times the stories people share about themselves are boring and repetitive. I know, because some of my stories are boring and repetitive.  A brother-in-law story Recently though, Janet and I were at an extended family event that wasn't all that interesting to me, and as the afternoon wore on I was itching to go home. Janet, however, was thoroughly enjoying herself and didn't want to leave.   At one point the subject of military service was mentioned, which prompted me to ask my brother-in-law Rich, “Were you ever in the service?” “Yes,” he said, but nothing more.  I then asked, “What was your your role, your job?” “Paratrooper,” Rich said.  That one word answer changed my mood entirely. I've known Rich for many years, but never knew he was paratrooper. This prompted me to ask more more questions about his military service that I found really interesting. Especially about the mechanics of jumping out of airplanes with a parachute on your back. I was so glad I coaxed my brother-in-law into sharing his story instead of telling parts of my own. It made for a far more interesting afternoon. Being stingy with your story doesn't mean remaining silent about it One final thought on this whole matter: Being stingy with your story doesn't mean remaining silent about it.  It's more about waiting your turn. It's about going last, not first. Good listeners do that, you know.  So what about YOU?  I wonder. Is it possible you may be too generous in sharing your story in ways that keeps someone from sharing there's? I also wonder if  being stingy with your story isn't a problem for you, how are you handling the results of letting others fill the air waves with the sound of their voice. What goes on inside you when you can't get a word in edgewise because other people are dominating the conversation and sucking the air time available for anyone else to talk.  I've got some thoughts on this that I'll share at another time, but I do wonder how  others deal with this relational dynamic Because someone listened… One of our listeners wrote in to tell what happened to her because someone listened. She tells the story of two friends who walked beside her through the death and grief of her 40-something daughter who died of cancer.  “I can't count the number of times I drove out of their driveway with warm refreshing healing teardrops flowing down my cheeks. Over the years — but especially these past 18 months on the hardest journey I never would have signed up for — they welcomed me with open arms, listened to my ongoing expressions of grief and struggle, fed me with an abundance of Papa God's love and delicious food, and brought the beauty of laughter into the hard. Their listening love has been a gift of GRACE wrapped in a ribbon of GOLD.” I bet you have stories of what happened to you because someone listened. We'd like to hear them. Closing Before we wrap up today's show, if you'd like some input regarding a relationship question or issue you're dealing with, I'd love to hear from you. Just go to JohnCertalic.com/question to leave me a voicemail. If you'd rather put your question in writing, just enter it in the  Comment box at the bottom of the show notes. I'll do my best to answer your question in a future episode. In closing, I'd also love to hear any thoughts you have about today's episode. I hope your thinking was stimulated by today's show, to be stingy in sharing your own story so someone else can share theirs. For when you do, it will help you experience the joy of relationships God desires for you. Because after all, You Were Made for This. Well, that's it for today. If there's someone in your life you think might like to hear what you just heard, please forward this episode on to them. And don't forget to spread a little relational sunshine around the people you meet this week. Spark some joy for them.  And I'll see you again next time. Goodbye for now. SUMMARY: Most companies are not Christian companies. This creates questions and opportunities for Christians who work in those companies. This episode explores how Christians can honor their bosses, how to think through a company that promotes ungodly causes, and also concludes with a bonus discussion on whether college athletes should be paid.. GUEST INFORMATION: Eric's career spans almost 20 years in sales and management. He has held roles such as sales rep, sales trainer, regional manager, area director of sales, and strategic account manager. He started off working for GANZ USA, a giftware company based out of Atlanta GA. After ten successful years there, He transitioned to working for a Medical Device company named Stryker in 2012 as a Patient Care Account Manager. In 2016, Eric was promoted to Northwest Regional Manager, and developed key IDN relationships, and built a team of sales people to cover 5 states. QUESTIONS THIS EPISODE ASKS: How do business minded Christians engage in this corporate world? What advice would you give to Christians who are specifically in leadership in a secular company? As someone who is involved in business leadership, what advice would you give to Christians if their company is embracing worldly philosophies (such as promoting the LGBTQ agenda at work), but it is not directly affecting that Christian's job? It has simply become part of the corporate ethos, and something that the company wants to associate itself with publicly? Several high-profile companies have recently embraced wokeness in a big way. Disney is probably the most prominent. But several other companies have tried that and it has led them to back away from from the woke and progressive mob (an example is Netflix). Do you think that companies should be involved in social positions, political messaging, or things like this? What about Christian companies who want to be vocal about the gospel? Do you think that the business world is becoming increasingly hostile to the Christian worldview? What do you think it is about the "businessman" that has given him a bad reputation in society? Charles Dickens "A Christmas Carol" and many other fictional classics certainly portrayed truths about the ruthlessness of businessmen. Today I consider businessmen either slick talkers with charm and no depth or cut throat and almost sinister. BONUS: Should college athletes be paid and/or allowed to make money for their likeness? The Christmas spirit is finally in the air, with Chris and Alex using Episode 63 of the podcast as their annual opportunity to discuss all things seasonal - this time examining the fantasy of Christmas advertising, and the repeated role played by animation in the construction of festive commercials, television ads and brand promotions. They are joined in their Yuletide deliberations by Dr Malcolm Cook, Associate Professor in Film Studies (University of Southampton), whose numerous publications include the monograph Early British Animation: From Page and Stage to Cinema Screens (2018) and the co-edited collection (with Professor Kirsten Moana Thompson) Animation and Advertising (2019). Listen as they discuss the style and form of the following selection of Christmas-themed animated advertisements: Lotte Reiniger’s “Christmas is Coming” (1951) made in collaboration with the General Post Office (GPO) informing audiences about the last postal dates; “The Flintstones - Cocoa Pebbles” (1985) that provides a playful prehistoric retelling of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol; the stargazing and fizzy drink-loving marine mammals of Coca-Cola’s “Polar Bears (Northern Lights)” (1993); the mixed media John Lewis advert “The Bear and The Hare” (2013) influenced by the sentimentality of Disney’s animated animals; Cartier’s 2016 luxurious offering titled “Winter Tale” replete with spectacular digital effects; and Hershey’s recent musical commercial “Heartwarming the World (Play the Kisses)” (2018) set to the tune of We Wish You a Merry Christmas. Topics include the entwined historical and formal exchange between the animation and advertising industries; the role of desire, enchantment and the magical-making quality of Christmas-as-fantasy (including thematic connections to the “film blanc”); the challenges of archiving animated advertising and its many pioneers; the value of analysing animation’s place within a variety of popular cultural experiences; the politics of audiovisual capitalist consumption and the business of Christmas; and the ways in which global brands historically lean in and out of the festive period through highly-animated commercial enterprises.

Also, we are pleased to be bringing you Literary Life Commonplace Books, perfect for recording what you are reading, as well as all your favorite quotes. Angelina and Cindy open the book discussion with the idea of the “other world” structure in fantasy writing, as well as how influential MacDonald was on writers who came after him. They also go in depth with the concept of the Holy Spirit as the originator of creative thought in conjunction with MacDonald’s thoughts on the imagination. Angelina gets excited about the metaphorical descent into Hades in this section of the book. She and Cindy talk about the importance of the hope of redemption, the platonic ideal versus reality, and learning to let go instead of grasp at things. They also return to the idea of true education being noble unrest introduced in last week’s episode. Also, Thomas and Angelina have a sale going on for an Advent Bundle of their popular webinars, Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and The Poetry of Advent. Additionally, Kelly Cumbee will be teaching a webinar series called “Seeking the Discarded Image: Nature.” Commonplace Quotes: Thomas Merton recognized at once when he wrote in his journal for July 18, 1964, “I began it this morning, studying it as a tract on monastic life, the myth of pilgrimage, the quest for the impossible island, the earthly paradise, the ultimate ideal,” for it is above all liturgical prayer and liturgical time that provide the structure of the journey as it unfolds around the two key anchor points: the Easter cycle, spent in the environs of the island of sheep, and the Christmas cycle with the monastic community of Alba. Esther de Waal I never could believe that a man who did not find God in other places, as well as in the Bible, ever found Him there at all. To find God in other books enables us to see clearly that He is more in the Bible than in any other book or in all books put together. George MacDonald Nightingales by Robert Bridges Beautiful must be the mountains whence ye come,     And bright in the fruitful valleys the streams, wherefrom                         Ye learn your song: Where are those starry woods? O might I wander there,     Among the flowers, which in that heavenly air                         Bloom the year long!     Nay, barren are those mountains and spent the streams:     Our song is the voice of desire, that haunts our dreams,                         A throe of the heart, Whose pining visions dim, forbidden hopes profound,     No dying cadence nor long sigh can sound,                         For all our art.     Alone, aloud in the raptured ear of men     We pour our dark nocturnal secret; and then,                         As night is withdrawn From these sweet-springing meads and bursting boughs of May,     Dream, while the innumerable choir of day                         Welcome the dawn. Alfred Noyes "Absolute attention is prayer." When May Sarton quoted those words of Simone Weil in her journal, she went on to say, "I have used that sentence often in talking about poetry to students, to suggest that if one looks long enough at almost anything, looks with absolute attention at a flower, a stone, the bark of a tree, grass, snow, a cloud, something like revelation takes place. Something is given." Simone Weil, May Sarton, Esther de Waal For repose is not the end of education; its end is a noble unrest, an ever renewed awaking from the dead, a ceaseless questioning of the past for the interpretation of the future, an urging on the motions of life, which had better far be accelerated into fever, then retarded into lethargy. George MacDonald The Palm and the Pine by Heinrich Heine Beneath an Indian palm a girl Of other blood reposes; Her cheek is clear and pale as pearl Amid that wild of roses. Beside a northern pine a boy Is leaning fancy-bound. Nor listens where with noisy joy Awaits the impatient hound. Georg Christoph Lichtenberg School isn’t supposed to be a polite form of incarceration, but a portal to the wider world. Richard Louv Milton’s point in Paradise Lost is that free man can be instructed only by the non-compulsive forms, whether vision, parable, or drama. Hence Paradise Lost is a series of interlocking visions, Adam warned by the cathartic contrapuntal vision of satanic fall, and fall through vision of Eve. To fall is to choose an illusion, not a wrong reason. Cindy shares a little about her past reading of many of MacDonald’s books and the effect they had on her. Angelina and Cindy also give some pertinent biographical information about MacDonald and put him in his Victorian context. Angelina brings out the connections between Spenser’s The Faerie Queene and MacDonald’s Phantastes, including the questing element. In answer to Cindy’s question about the German word “Maerchen”, Thomas shares some ideas about what sorts of stories are included in that term. In this discussion, Angelina points out all the big themes of fairy tales and stories in general that we see right away in this story. Cindy highlights the role of the grandmother in this and other MacDonald stories. In light of the Faerie Queene connections, Thomas wonders if there will be a true woman and a false woman in this story. Angelina and Cindy go on to explore so many more of the ideas and themes presented in these chapters. Be back next week for chapters 5-9. Commonplace Quotes: There is no truth, however overpowering and clear, but men may escape from it by shutting their eyes. Cardinal John Henry Newman Hurry is a sort of violence on the soul. John Mark Comer I should have been shocked in my teens if anyone had told me that what I learned to love in Phantastes was goodness. But now that I know, I there was no deception. The deception is all the other way round–in that prosaic moralism which confines goodness to the region of Law and Duty, which never lets us feel in our face the sweet air blowing from “the land of righteousness,” never reveals that elusive Form which if once seen mus inevitably be desire with all but sensuous desire–the thing (in Sappho’s phrase) “more gold than gold.” C. S. Lewis Maerchen by Walter de la Mare Soundless the moth-flit, crisp the death-watch tick; Crazed in her shaken arbour bird did sing; Slow wreathed the grease adown from soot-clogged wick: The Cat looked long and softly at the King. Mouse frisked and scampered, leapt, gnawed, squeaked; Small at the window looped cowled bat a-wing; The dim-lit rafters with the night-mist reeked: The Cat looked long and softly at the King. Hello, my friends! Happy Holidays! I hope you got what you wanted for Christmas and Hanukkah! And...here's one last present that I was hiding behind the sofa! Last year I did a traditional Christmas ghost story reading. This is a tradition that harkens back to Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol and has been kept alive by the BBC throughout the decades. I’ve decided I want to make this an annual event. So, what I want to do this Christmas season is to tell a few short tales to chill you while you sit with just one flickering candle and a hot toddy or hot chocolate or a sugar-free energy drink. Whatever your poison, I hope these stories please you enough that maybe you can keep the tradition of the Christmas ghost story going with your own family. This year I'll be telling THREE GHOST STORIES! William Wilson by Edgar Allan Poe (1839) The Outsider by H.P. Lovecraft (1926) The Pale Man by Julius Long (1934) I hope you enjoy the show, and I look forward to having more conversations in 2020! No, but we try! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Today we conclude our series on repentance and the restoration and healing work of Christ in our lives based on Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Scrooge now is taken to the future; a future just beyond his own demise. And what is the key that unlocks the totality of true repentance coming out of his soul? It is his mortality. Our culture seeks to diminish what is, quite frankly, one of the greatest gifts of love and mercy our Lord has given us; to keep the truth of our mortality always before us. Our mortality, by grace, drives us into the loving arms of a Savior who so desires to heal us through repentance of our past and our present. On this day we discuss something almost all of us have a skewed understanding regarding. We discuss what it is to have a healthy, holy, and righteous fear of God; a truth that runs rampant all the way through the Scriptures. So we look at these Scriptures and all of the promises given to those who fear the Lord. Finally, we watch the transformation of Ebeneezer Scrooge that occurs because of true repentance. And we remember that this transformation can happen to us daily.
