What happens when your books, for all the right reasons, are banned? Well sometimes the controversy just drives demand; unfortunately it also often means the author's name is all-but-lost to the mists of time, and relegated to the back of the collective mind. Such was the case for Limerick's own Kate O'Brien whose 50th anniversary we mark in 2024. O'Brien had two books "Mary Lavelle" and "Land of Spices" banned in Ireland, and she herself was banned from Spain, for expressing some very progressive ideas around politics, women's liberation, and sexual identity. On this month's episode we meet Shirley Keane, director of Limerick's Opera Workshop, and Fiona Linnane, composer, to discuss their work-in-progress "Banned" which explores how Kate O'Brien responded to her censorship – the heartbreak it brought her, her ultimate triumph in spite of it, and the impact it will have had on the breadth of her audience today. Fiona Linnane is a composer whose compositional practice centres around use of text and includes opera, art song and featuring spoken word. She is director of Limerick New Music Ensemble and represented by the Contemporary Music Centre, Dublin. Following a Bachelor of Music Degree from University College Cork and a Masters in Music Technology from University of Limerick, Linnane's first explorations into composition were through song writing. Over the last 20 years she has established herself as a composer of "Art Song" and operatic works popular with both audiences and performers alike. The work of Kate O'Brien has been a feature of Linnane's work since 2011 when she began composing her song cycle Songs from Kate O'Brien. The cycle consists of 12 songs – four for soprano, four for contralto and four for baritone – based on poems by Mary Coll depicting characters from O'Brien's novels at pivotal moments in their development. The Limerick City and County Council awarded her with Individual Arts Bursaries in 2018 and 2019 for work in opera and art song, including the addition of the four songs for soprano to the Kate O'Brien cycle. Founder and Artistic Director of Opera Workshop, Shirley has had training in both theatre and opera, at Rose Bruford College, Guildhall School of Music and the Royal Academy of Music, London. Shows created and produced for Opera Workshop include The Countess' Salon, Opera What The Fuss!, The Trouble with Virtue, Abandoned and No 2 Pery Square by Fiona Linnane. In October 2022 Shirley produced and directed Twisted Tales, a production of short, edgy contemporary operas by Fiona Linnane and Luke Byrne. She has worked as a performer, director, teacher and mentor with companies as diverse as Opera Theatre Co., Opera Holland Park, Basingstoke Haymarket Theatre, Glyndebourne Opera, Live Music Now, Accademia Solti Te Kanawa, Half Moon Young People's Theatre Co., and The Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Shirley was also engaged on the Women's Conducting Programme at the National Concert Hall, led by conductor Alice Farnham. Shirley enjoys regular cover presenter time on RTE lyric fm. https://limetreebelltable.ie/events/banned-by-fiona-linnane/ https://operaworkshop.ie/ Instagram: @fionacomposes @operaworkshoplimerick The Limerick Lady is a grassroots movement based in Limerick, Ireland, with a focus on promoting conversation around gender, visibility, gender balance and the arts. It's the second to second last episode of the pod and cup final fever is intertwined with Johnny's playoff sickness in a colourful episode. Our roving Galway reporter took a break from venting his frustration to make the unfamiliar trip to the Aviva Stadium where he interviews Ruaidhri Higgins without impersonating him and finally gets up close and personal with his old mate Damien Duff, who is in reflective mood and content to let sleeping giants lie. We also hear from Luke Byrne and Brandon Kavanagh for a player perspective on Sunday's showpiece, while Dan expands on the new minimum wage, Shels investment and the other big stories of the week in a packed mailbag. In this exciting time for fans of big events, we also talk Dylan (McGlade), (Joe) Kendrick Lamar tickets, and muse over what the Finn Harps show will be like without Ollie Horgan. All this because Future Ticketing, Porterhouse Brewery and Collar and Cuff have stuck with us through thick and thicker. It's not dark yet....but it's getting there!
The boys are back in town....but only at the right time. Luke Byrne and Sean Boyd join us in studio after Shelbourne's defeat of Bohemians on Sunday to reflect on the big win, Boyd's rebirth, Damien Duff's video making skills and the pre-season training rules that brought the old pals closer together. We also hear from Tommy Barrett about Treaty United's unlikely cup run, and a jibe about the Galway flavour in the dressing room that leaves Johnny even more hot and bothered than when he wore his Collar and Cuff blazer to Greece. The lads debate Shamrock Rovers' European concessions, a pub debate that could just as easily take place in a jacuzzi. We find out that Sean and Luke know where we can get one as quick change Johnny sports a Christian prayer group, jacuzzi-ready look. Future Ticketing, Collar and Cuff and The Porterhouse Brew are at least partly responsible for this 87 minutes of your life that you'll never get back!
On the morning of 26th March, 2013, a car entered the water at Arklow pier. Only one of it's occupants emerged from the freezing, rough water. Was it a terrible accident? Or a plan to murder? In January 2008, 18 year old Marioara got into a car on Lombard Street in Dublin City centre, where she and some of her family had been begging for change. She was never seen again. During the garda investigation it became clear that this was an unusual crime - a seemingly random act of violence, likely committed by a member of one of Dublin's criminal gangs. After 6 years, a man went on trial. But would there be justice for Marioara?********* Join me at CrimeCon UK on September 25th and 26th 2021. For more information and tickets visit crimecon.co.uk. Yes we are a day early, but Punchestown Is calling. After another eventful 72 hours Dan & Johnny delve into two more busy rounds of the L.O.I, although Johnny isn’t that busy in truth. Luke Byrne was in studio to discuss why two old employers in Rovers & Bohs are sitting pretty at the top of the Premier Division, even though Dundalk have made an ominous return to form. He did also tell us about a very interesting encounter in Cobh, one that showed how the First Division created an unlikey offer to 'see the light'.

The one from Kerry, where he was the only soccer player in the village. Not that there’s anything wrong with that! Luke Byrne ankled it into the ground floor studio to weigh in on the Declan Rice affair, Johnny quizzes Dinny Corcoran from Bohs on the Irn-Bru cup and when THE big question is answered we get all gastronomical about Dutch bastard cousins and pretentious pale ales before Dan’s day gets ruined when he finds an expired 'Fosters Dollar' in an old sock drawer. Oh and there’s some football in there somewhere too….
