“I want students to function in a studio recording session and a live performance, which are very, very different worlds. I want them to be able to do not just jazz, not just classical, not just gospel, but everything so that they can be hired to sing backgrounds for Beyoncé one day and the next day be singing with Andrea Bocelli on tour. I try to give them the most well-rounded experience I can.”A native of Holguín, Cuba, Cindy Ellis immigrated to the United States in 2005. She earned her Bachelor of Music Degree in Music Education and Jazz Voice from Florida International University and her Master's Degree in Music Education from the University of Missouri. Mrs. Ellis is a full time choral director at Miami Arts Studio, a 6th-12th grade public performing arts magnet school in Miami, FL. Her middle school and high school ensembles have been featured at numerous venues throughout the country. These include Carnegie Hall (2018 and 2024), and the Florida, Southern, and National Conferences of the American Choral Directors Association. In 2022, Mrs. Ellis' students performed in Los Angeles for the Summit of the Americas, a meeting hosted by President Joe Biden that brought together 40 Presidents and leaders from the Americas and Caribbean. Additionally, in the last 7 years, the students have recorded and performed background vocals for Gloria and Emilio Estefan and several music award shows including the AMAs, Latin American Music Awards and the Latin GRAMMY Awards. In 2024 Mrs. Ellis conducted her students at the Miami show of Jacob Collier's DJESSE Volume 4 World Tour. Beyond her school responsibilities, she frequently performs, conducts honor choirs and teaches masterclasses for music directors and students from elementary to college throughout North America. As a jazz vocal soloist and alto with the Jason Max Ferdinand Singers, she collaborated with Jacob Collier for performances at the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, and recording projects including a performance alongside Coldplay for NBC's Saturday Night Live and the 2024 BBC Proms Music Festival in London, UK.In 2020, Mrs. Ellis was published by GIA Publications as a contributing author on “Teaching with Heart,” and in 2022, she served as instructional design editor and contributing author of “Teaching Beyond the Music,” the second edition in the series. What happens when your books, for all the right reasons, are banned? Well sometimes the controversy just drives demand; unfortunately it also often means the author's name is all-but-lost to the mists of time, and relegated to the back of the collective mind. Such was the case for Limerick's own Kate O'Brien whose 50th anniversary we mark in 2024. O'Brien had two books "Mary Lavelle" and "Land of Spices" banned in Ireland, and she herself was banned from Spain, for expressing some very progressive ideas around politics, women's liberation, and sexual identity.  On this month's episode we meet Shirley Keane, director of Limerick's Opera Workshop, and Fiona Linnane, composer, to discuss their work-in-progress "Banned" which explores how Kate O'Brien responded to her censorship – the heartbreak it brought her, her ultimate triumph in spite of it, and the impact it will have had on the breadth of her audience today.  Fiona Linnane is a composer whose compositional practice centres around use of text and includes opera, art song and featuring spoken word.  She is director of Limerick New Music Ensemble and represented by the Contemporary Music Centre, Dublin. Following a Bachelor of Music Degree from University College Cork and a Masters in Music Technology from University of Limerick, Linnane's first explorations into composition were through song writing. Over the last 20 years she has established herself as a composer of "Art Song" and operatic works popular with both audiences and performers alike. The work of Kate O'Brien has been a feature of Linnane's work since 2011 when she began composing her song cycle Songs from Kate O'Brien. The cycle consists of 12 songs – four for soprano, four for contralto and four for baritone – based on poems by Mary Coll depicting characters from O'Brien's novels at pivotal moments in their development. The Limerick City and County Council awarded her with Individual Arts Bursaries in 2018 and 2019 for work in opera and art song, including the addition of the four songs for soprano to the Kate O'Brien cycle. Founder and Artistic Director of Opera Workshop, Shirley has had training in both theatre and opera, at Rose Bruford College, Guildhall School of Music and the Royal Academy of Music, London. Shows created and produced for Opera Workshop include The Countess' Salon, Opera What The Fuss!, The Trouble with Virtue, Abandoned and No 2 Pery Square by Fiona Linnane. In October 2022 Shirley produced and directed Twisted Tales, a production of short, edgy contemporary operas by Fiona Linnane and Luke Byrne. She has worked as a performer, director, teacher and mentor with companies as diverse as Opera Theatre Co., Opera Holland Park, Basingstoke Haymarket Theatre, Glyndebourne Opera, Live Music Now, Accademia Solti Te Kanawa, Half Moon Young People's Theatre Co., and The Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Shirley was also engaged on the Women's Conducting Programme at the National Concert Hall, led by conductor Alice Farnham. Shirley enjoys regular cover presenter time on RTE lyric fm. https://limetreebelltable.ie/events/banned-by-fiona-linnane/ https://operaworkshop.ie/ Instagram:  @fionacomposes @operaworkshoplimerick The Limerick Lady is a grassroots movement based in Limerick, Ireland, with a focus on promoting conversation around gender, visibility, gender balance and the arts. Chad Goodman is, to quote Christina Wallace from Forbes Magazine, "an entrepreneur bringing innovation to classical music." In his young life, Chad has started his own ensemble, the Elevate Ensemble, worked with the San Francisco Symphony and San Francisco Ballet as a conductor, and is currently a Conducting Fellow of the New World Symphony. So how did he do all of this at such a young age? He gives a lot of clues and practical advice in his book: "You Earned a Music Degree. Now What?" It was a pleasure to speak with him about the many aspects of his career and life.We begin by going back to the start of Chad's career, learning music and also learning the business of music. At a very young age, he founded the Elevate Ensemble. He talks about many of the different aspects of planning concerts, paying musicians, arranging concert venues, and the like. We trace his career to working with the San Francisco Symphony, assisting guest conductors, and how Manfred Honeck was such a profound influence on him.

If they're breathing... count us in.”We like to think of Valley of Grey as your quintessential pop-rock song,” said Bob Dougherty, co-founder of the bandand co-writer of the band's music. “It's a soaring anthem. It's got riveting solos, infectious hooks but enough heavyguitars to make you tingle in your nether regions.”The band has been together for several years and had released 18 songs on their YouTube channel and all streaming platforms before the pandemic put plans to launch their live show on hold. Along with all the world-wide releases and official lyric videos to all the songs, they released an official music video shot at the famous beachesin Malibu with gorgeous views of the Pacific Ocean. Where Are You Tonight, featuring actress Rai Quartley, includes intriguing studio-shot scenes to go along with an enticing story line. Already reaching over half-million views, the video can be seen on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUg56nAAJfs. The song has also been in regular rotation on nine national radio stations. The band's catalog, written by Dougherty and Track, was mostly recorded during a period of several years leading up to 2020 at which time Sensaround was gearing up for live performances. Then the pandemic hit, and the strategy, said Bob, was to “just hole myself up seven days a week and practice mychops on rhythm guitar. We felt it would be as practical as it would be commercially-viable adding the singer-songwriter look to the band. A lead singer without an instrument in his hand seemed outdated to us. We saw achance to turn a negative into a positive. It felt as though the universe hit pause on life, so I resolved to come out of itwith a new skill and we felt that the band would make a better impression with the lead singer handling electricrhythm guitar parts.”Since the pandemic ended, “The priority of the last couple of years has been to get the live show tight,” said Alex Track, co-founder, co-writer and drummer of the band. “It's a blessing to be in a band with such incredible players. It's a gift, not only to be in a band with zero egos, but to have the members be such great friends and great people ingeneral. If this project was any more fun, I wouldn't be able to stand it.”Bob got into music and guitar through a youthful infatuation with U2, REM and Oasis, but didn't become an actual performer until he left a career in video editing and was hired onto the Disney Wonder Cruise ship. After that, he tookthe job of entertainer at the Club Med vacation village in Cancun, which involved physical comedy but also solo acoustic guitar sets at the main bar. “It sharpened my skills and flamed my passion for music,” he said. Club Med is where he met Alex, and that introduction was the genesis of Sensaround. With world-renowned symphony and choral conductor Gerhard Track and Beethoven Piano Competition winnerMicaela Maihart-Track as parents, it was no surprise that Alex Track grew up performing in a number of orchestras, choirs and bands. Taking first place at the Tri-State Music Festival piano competition, Track's passion turned todrums and percussion. Graduating with honors with a Masters of Music Degree from the Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, Austria, Alex went on to become CEO of Track Entertainment in Los Angeles. Afterattending MIT in Hollywood, Track has been involved in all aspects of the music industry in Los Angeles from scoring pictures to composing, arranging, recording, mixing, mastering and producing records. Track's exceptional skills wererecognized when he won a Grammy Award in 2007. “My grandfather was a very popular entertainer. The Bob Hopeof Europe, if you will and my father was an expert at winning crowds over with intermittent humor during breaksbetween classical pieces at concerts he conducted throughout his career. Taking advantage of Bob's natural sense ofhumor and likability, it's heart-warming for me to see that spirit of entertainment included in our show. For my part, it feels like we're carrying on a family tradition.”Nate Gignac, guitar and vocals, won many competitions at piano festivals in Canada, then, according to his bio, as a teenager “picked up guitar and never looked back.” He studied at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood. He has touredwith various rock bands over most of the United States and Mexico.Max Pierce, bass and vocals, has 20 years' experience as a professional bass player, playing in live band situations, doing session work at recording studios, and performing in musical theater. He performs for the Los Angeles theatercompany For The Record, and music that he wrote has been featured on the NBC show Parenthood. The band sums up all that passion, talent, skill and experience in its official bio. Their music, it says, comes “from aplace of earnest, raw sincerity for people who long for the return of real instruments and hand-carved music that is meant to inspire and take the listener through every possible emotion.”As far as the name of the band is concerned, Bob and Alex came up with a plan to write down names that would fit the band. Bob had already written down dozens of names while Alex hadn't come up with one. One day, out of theblue, Alex excitedly told Bob that he had a name for the band. His first and only name for the list, but explained that he saw the name in a dream, up in lights like on a big venue. Alex immediately researched the name. The name “Sensurround” was the patented name for the surround sound system built to shake seats in a movie theater back inthe day. When articles were written on the subject, people inadvertently spelled it “Sensaround.” The slogan was: Sound so powerful that you not only hear it, you feel it. Being that's how Alex felt the listener will feel when hearingtheir music, the name made “sense”. Randomly seeing it in a dream, that vividly, they didn't want to challenge fate. Sensaround was born. The focus now is on live performances. They made their debut in May this year and have two more shows scheduled for September on the L.A. club venue circuit: September 7th at The Universal Bar and Grill on Lankershim Blvd. in Universal City and September 22nd at The Mint on Pico Blvd. in Mid City Los Angeles. They are also working out the details to perform at other famous LA venues, the Whisky A Go Go, The Roxy Theatre, the Troubadour and The Viper Room to start. “We have a strong catalogue,” said Bob. “We've got over 20 songs thatare radio ready. The hope is to build a fan base by playing out consistently. First and foremost, it will be interesting to see the response of a crowd at a live venue. I am excited to find out if they will be throwing their underwear on stageor fire rotten tomatoes at us.”Connect with Sensaround on all platforms for new music, videos, and social posts.“Valley Of Grey,” Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/track/6j7sQM4pO8iYK92TlS0Jw8?si=81c823897f044c45&nd=1“

"That was the beginning of me working with a homeless women's choir. As someone who grew up doing music my whole life, it was just part of my DNA. This broke open everything I had ever thought or experienced about music, and it gave me some really new opportunities and new ways to look at the power and purpose of singing. For the people I was working with, it was part of what would get them through a day or week, and that was really powerful." Amanda Weber currently serves as Director of Worship and the Arts at Westminster Presbyterian Church in downtown Minneapolis, where she oversees a wealth of arts programming. Her work explores the intersections of art, spirituality, and justice and their impact on community. With a deep love for teaching, Weber has served as adjunct professor for Concordia University St. Paul and the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. She co-facilitated a Social Justice and Music January-term course at St. Olaf College and was a Vocal Instructor for theology students at Yale Divinity School. Weber also taught high school at the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts in Hartford, CT.Weber is the Founder and Artistic Director of Voices of Hope, an organization that builds choral singing communities in correctional facilities in the state of Minnesota. Weber's doctoral dissertation, which focused on this work, was awarded the Julius Herford Dissertation Prize in 2018. She has presented on the topic of incarceration and choral singing at numerous conferences and was also invited to speak for a TEDx Minneapolis Salon in 2016.Weber's interest in using music as a tool for social justice grew through her work at Luther Place Memorial Church in Washington, DC, where she founded Bethany's Women of Praise, a choir for homeless women.  Weber received a Doctorate of Musical Arts from the University of Minnesota in 2018, a Master of Music Degree in Choral Conducting at the Yale School of Music and Institute of Sacred Music in 2013, and a Bachelor of Arts in Music and Art at Luther College in 2008.  You can find out more about Amanda by visiting amandakateweber.com and learn more about Voices of Hope at www.wearevoicesofhope.org. Suzi quickly became the band's lead singer and front person. They successfully toured for 7 years before changing their name to Cradle. Not Everyone Should Get a Participation Trophy, nor does everyone get a record deal. What is the definition of talent? What does it take to be truly successful? And at what point should you walk away when you realize it's not going to happen to you? The music business is no different than any other industry, from the aspect that no matter how hard you work, you may still not make it to the top of the heap. For you to give your best, are you willing to sacrifice your social life, your friends, or even your family? In a business that almost requires a 24/7 presence, the music industry can be tough on a good day. Is getting on one of today's reality based music contest TV shows worth that sacrifice? How much of that will actually enhance your career? It's all about knowing what direction you want your career to head in, and just as important, having the ability and understanding to take direction from reliable people in the industry. Artist consultant and vocal rehabilitation coach Jana Jones Uttz discusses this, and other topics that today's up and coming artists need to know, and hopefully understand if they're going to take the steps required to make an impression on the music scene. We even have a discussion on Elvis, and how Sam Phillips and Colonel Tom Parker were more influential regarding Elvis' career than originally thought of or considered. Phil Lambert was born in Christchurch, New Zealand. After completing his Music Degree, Phil relocated to Melbourne, Australia where he continued his musical career as a composer, teacher and performer and established his own company Cloudbreak Music®. Phil has now composed for Feature Films, Film Trailers, Short Films, Media Projects and TVCs, performed live at various venues, radio stations and an appearance on T.V as well as receiving radio play for his compositions along with interviews throughout Australia and New Zealand. He has also built a successful private woodwind teaching business and created the internationally recognised product Classical Fingers®. As a music educator, Phil has been teaching Clarinet, Saxophone and Flute for 18 years and now teaches privately from his studio in Kensington, Melbourne. Phil believes that private tuition is important as it not only establishes a bond between teacher and student, but it allows him to personally focus solely on each student's needs at the particular level they are at; “Every student is different so every lesson needs to be tailored to suit their ability and potential.” During Phil's years of teaching woodwind he encountered numerous players, both beginners and advanced, that naturally played the clarinet by lifting their fingers too high so he started experimenting with the idea of using a device to help reduce this movement. In 2011 Phil started developing a prototype that his students could use on a more regular basis away from the lesson and in 2014 the evolution of Classical Finegrs was finally realised. Since its release, Classical Fingers has now been sold to 28 countries including to: Teachers, Students, Stores, Universities, High Schools and Distributors. It has also won various Design Awards and has been exhibited in Australia, Korea, Frankfurt and USA. Phil is currently devloping Classical Fingers for the Flute.
