This episode features ‘The Apprentice' - a film about young Donald Trump building his business in the '70s and '80s in America as he was mentored by the famously ruthless lawyer Roy Cohn. Canadian 1st Assistant Director Joel Hay takes us behind the scenes of this brilliant film. It is not a conversation about political views, controversies or accusations. It is about how this very important film was made. We are talking not only about the incredible acting performances by Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong, their wigs and the genius prosthetics work by the hair and makeup team but also about the directors unique style of working and filming a hair transplant as well as a difficult rape scene. On top of that we are touching the subject of finishing days too early, finding locations that exist in real life to recreate in Canada without a Location Manager and doing all of this in a little over 30 days. My one hundredth episode is out! What a journey! What better job to celebrate than a Film Location Scout! Rico Bailey is a Film Location Scout and a Location Manager. The two jobs are complementary, yet not always taken by the same person. Rico and I met on the set of Black Sails at the Cape Town Film Studios back in 2013! The job of a location scout allows you to discover beautiful sites, to be in the outdoors a lot, and to get to work directly with the film director and the key departments of a film production. There's also much more behind this profession and yes, paperwork is part of it. But! Enough with me. Here's Rico!

Welcome to “The Elements of Being” podcast, where I dissect and explore the minds and habits of psychologists, filmmakers, writers, and industry icons. Essentially, we learn what makes them flip the switch to achieve great feats, goals, and milestones…and a chance to geek out over the psychology behind human behavior.Today is meant for my fellow film geeks. If you have ever watched an incredible scene during your favorite movie and TV show and wondered, "how do they pull that off or how do they get access to a place like that?”, we shed a little light on the process during my interview with Stuart Berberich, a Hollywood Location Manager and Scout. We typically see the movie creation experience from the perspective of actors, actresses, and directors….my interview with Stuart brought a unique behind-the-scenes look and a different perspective into the on-screen entertainment that I admire and enjoy so much. Most likely, you've seen Stuart's professional contributions if you've seen the blockbuster movies Transformers 3 and Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight as well as the shows Sense 8 and the Patriot…especially the Patriot on Amazon…season one is brilliantly written and filmed. Here's what we discussed:-how COVID-19 affects the present and future of Hollywood-the true impact of Hollywood on the economy -the path and day-to-day of a location scout and manager for film and television-the process of aligning locations with the vision of the writers and director-the challenges of finding and securing the locations you see on screen-the evolution of Hollywood films from permanent sets to unique locations-the current trends in Hollywood***To learn more about Hollywood location manager Stuart Berberich, check out his website or say hello on Instagram!***Interested in sponsoring the podcast? In this episode I talk with Location Manager, Caleb Duffy.I have been working with Caleb Duffy for the past 3 years on the show VEEP and The Good Place, He's a super chill guy that no matter how rearranged the schedule gets and flying minute by minute he always keeps his cool. And believe me on VEEP things changed every thirty seconds sometimes. I know how hard he worked on VEEP to get the locations every episode… some episodes as many as 20 or more.In preparing for this interview I looked him up on IMDB, which I don't think I had before, and I had no idea the resume this guys has! And actually how many people we know in common. Caleb started in the early 2000's and as assistant location manager on projects like Erin Brokovish, Traffic, Oceans'11, Terminator 3, And location manager on Superman Returns, Into the WIld, The Artist, Behind the Candelabra, Thor, and Wine Country.. He's ;location managed TV shows including Greek, True Detective, The Good Place and VEEP.
