What happens when your books, for all the right reasons, are banned? Well sometimes the controversy just drives demand; unfortunately it also often means the author's name is all-but-lost to the mists of time, and relegated to the back of the collective mind. Such was the case for Limerick's own Kate O'Brien whose 50th anniversary we mark in 2024. O'Brien had two books "Mary Lavelle" and "Land of Spices" banned in Ireland, and she herself was banned from Spain, for expressing some very progressive ideas around politics, women's liberation, and sexual identity.  On this month's episode we meet Shirley Keane, director of Limerick's Opera Workshop, and Fiona Linnane, composer, to discuss their work-in-progress "Banned" which explores how Kate O'Brien responded to her censorship – the heartbreak it brought her, her ultimate triumph in spite of it, and the impact it will have had on the breadth of her audience today.  Fiona Linnane is a composer whose compositional practice centres around use of text and includes opera, art song and featuring spoken word.  She is director of Limerick New Music Ensemble and represented by the Contemporary Music Centre, Dublin. Following a Bachelor of Music Degree from University College Cork and a Masters in Music Technology from University of Limerick, Linnane's first explorations into composition were through song writing. Over the last 20 years she has established herself as a composer of "Art Song" and operatic works popular with both audiences and performers alike. The work of Kate O'Brien has been a feature of Linnane's work since 2011 when she began composing her song cycle Songs from Kate O'Brien. The cycle consists of 12 songs – four for soprano, four for contralto and four for baritone – based on poems by Mary Coll depicting characters from O'Brien's novels at pivotal moments in their development. The Limerick City and County Council awarded her with Individual Arts Bursaries in 2018 and 2019 for work in opera and art song, including the addition of the four songs for soprano to the Kate O'Brien cycle. Founder and Artistic Director of Opera Workshop, Shirley has had training in both theatre and opera, at Rose Bruford College, Guildhall School of Music and the Royal Academy of Music, London. Shows created and produced for Opera Workshop include The Countess' Salon, Opera What The Fuss!, The Trouble with Virtue, Abandoned and No 2 Pery Square by Fiona Linnane. In October 2022 Shirley produced and directed Twisted Tales, a production of short, edgy contemporary operas by Fiona Linnane and Luke Byrne. She has worked as a performer, director, teacher and mentor with companies as diverse as Opera Theatre Co., Opera Holland Park, Basingstoke Haymarket Theatre, Glyndebourne Opera, Live Music Now, Accademia Solti Te Kanawa, Half Moon Young People's Theatre Co., and The Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Shirley was also engaged on the Women's Conducting Programme at the National Concert Hall, led by conductor Alice Farnham. Shirley enjoys regular cover presenter time on RTE lyric fm. https://limetreebelltable.ie/events/banned-by-fiona-linnane/ https://operaworkshop.ie/ Instagram:  @fionacomposes @operaworkshoplimerick The Limerick Lady is a grassroots movement based in Limerick, Ireland, with a focus on promoting conversation around gender, visibility, gender balance and the arts. Welcome to E&T Season William Robert Allenby Bass-baritone celebrated 40 years on stage in 2020, since his debut as Kurt in 'the Sound of Music' with the Northern Theatre Company, at the Hull New Theatre, in 1980. His career has taken him around the world in a variety of musical styles from Puccini through to Andrew Lloyd Webber and Rogers and Hammerstein. William was recently awarded Associateship (ARAM) in the Royal Academy of Music 2020 honours list for a significant contribution to the music profession.William's considerable vocal and comedic talents have taken him to major opera houses in many leading comic and dramatic roles, garnering universal critical acclaim. He has appeared at the Royal Opera Covent Garden, English National Opera, Welsh National Opera, Scottish Opera, and Opera Holland Park, to name but a few.Following his days as a juvenile lead with the Northern Theatre Company in musicals and variety shows, William's major break-through came when he was engaged as a soloist for BBC Radio 2 in 1989. He has since appeared many times as a star singer on 'Friday Night is Music Night' in a variety of broadcasts of musicals and operetta and in international tours of 'Jesus Christ Superstar' with Westend International. William has also achieved considerable success in over 400 performances of his extremely popular one-man shows, 'An Enchanted Evening of Song' and 'The Music of the Night' in theatres around the UK and as a headline act aboard many of the luxury cruise lines in the US and Europe.I worked with Will on Luxury Cruise Liners and we have enjoyed a spot together in my first produced show in a theatre in 2005 when a character of mine named Jilly Pepper bravely duetted with this master of vocals, you can hear this later in this show.Although Eyes & Teeth is not purely music based, each guest is always linked to Variety in some way and Wills love for the art of Comedy and Variety goes deep and you hear this in his work as well as what he is bringing at Chichester University passing it on to students of Cabaret and Variety. He's paying it forward, so sit back and enjoy the work of the one and only Will Allenby

Last week we looked at radical solutions to the ageing population and slowing birth rate, including a tax on the childfree. One country which has taken a unique approach is Hungary which introduced tax breaks and loans to encourage women to have more children in 2019. The BBC's Nick Thorpe joins Krupa to discuss how successful the policy has been. Back in 1972, the very first England Women's Football Team beat Scotland in their first international victory, but unlike the men's team the Lionesses were not awarded official caps. Pressure has been mounting for the Football Association to recognise the 1972 team with caps. The reserve goalkeeper, Sue Wyhatt, joins us as the FA announce they will award the caps. The male contraceptive pill has been talked about for decades but so far has never got past the research stages. There is a current clinical trial though that is already yielding good results – however it's not a pill, it's a gel. It's also had positive feedback from the couples who tried it. Krupa is joined by Dr Diana Blithe, who leads the Contraceptive Development Program at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development in the US. The UK premiere of Little Women opens at Opera Holland Park later this week. On June 18 we laid on a celebration of all things McCartney on his 80th in the magical tented arena at Opera Holland Park in West London. People came from all corners of the globe. It turned out to be a feast of fond memories, forgotten songs, fresh perspectives, personal encounters, original theories and fascinating unknown tales. In this first half, David and Mark talk to the broadcaster Geoff Lloyd – who once had him on his radio show and gave him random instruments to see if he could get a tune out of them and part-written songs to finish off. Geoff was born in ‘73 and pieced together the McCartney story via an interesting route. His account of meeting him is electrifying.  Our second guest is the writer, star of the literary world and co-host of the Backlisted podcast Andy Miller, onstage wearing very special McCartney-related clothes for a very special reason. Growing up as an Italian boy in London, Michael Volpe listened to everything from Mario Lanza to prog Rock.  Despite having very little money, his mum brought him and his brothers up with plenty of Italian food, packed social gatherings, alongside the expected Italian family dramas, much to the shock of his girlfriends. As a teenager he excelled in music and the performing arts, but turned down an opportunity to audition at RADA, feeling that it wasn't the path for him.  Going on to take a role at what was then Holland Park Theatre to promote and market the festival of visiting productions, he brought audience numbers up from 15,000 to 25,000 in his first year.  He realised that opera was the heart of the work at Holland Park, and the way to create work of real value and impact would be to develop a new festival with an entity of its own. As General Manager of Opera Holland Park, alongside the Producer James Clutton – now Director of Opera & CEO -  the pair formed a formidable long-running partnership until Michael recently retired from OHP, joining Iford Arts as Interim Executive Director, where he's inspiring the future of the festival. Michael has just been awarded an OBE for his services to opera, and his journey is beautifully captivated in his book ‘Noisy at the wrong times' one of The Sunday Times' 100 biographies to love. Diva alert! In episode four, Holley and Hall tell the story of the recording of one of opera's greatest characters, Emma Calvé. Basking in the glory of having captured the voice of the mighty Enrico Caruso in Milan (as outlined in Series One of The Sound of the Hound), Fred goes on something of a recording spree back in London. But he gets more than he bargained for with Calvé, who proves to be something of a handful.Calvé, who is today seen as one of the greatest opera singers of the Belle Epoque era, had made her name playing the lead role in Carmen when Fred records her (indeed, her interpretation of the role is still widely used today). But Fred and his team discover that the character's feistiness is not confined to the stage when they try to coax Calvé into their Covent Garden studio. Holley and Hall tell the tale of this complex French diva, and play some of her famous – or as Fred would no doubt have it – infamous recordings. Her dissatisfaction with one of her tracks was caught on disc, and we play it here. We are joined in this episode for the first time by our new regular guest Michael Volpe, the founder and former general director of Opera Holland Park. Michael brilliantly dissects Calvé's voice and gives us an insight into her career. He also tells us if, to put it bluntly, she was really any good. Hosted on Acast. Chief Executive and Director of Opera at Opera Holland Park in London, James Clutton, chats openly about his 60s musical influences, early school trips to the theatre, and learning his craft from the ground up by producing his own work, before later heading to the West End under the wing of a major commercial producer.  A short-term contract turned into a life-long dedication to producing opera at Opera Holland Park, developing it from a small-scale venture to the beating heart of the London operatic scene.  James shares his experience of ‘un-producing' the 2020 season, and how he imagines producing opera as we know it might change to adapt to the aftermath of the Covid Crisis.  James' down-to-earth attitude gives us a rare insight into the world of the friendliest, most welcoming man in the business. https://operahollandpark.com/
