Mapping is a hugely complex task to take on. Even if you moved as much of the data-management as you can out to 3rd-party services, you'd still have a tonne of work to do weaving together map tiles, routing information, GPS data, points of interest, search and more. And as if that wasn't enough, you'd probably want that software to work on a whole range of platforms, so you have to build something that works on iOS, Android and more. It's little wonder that the space is dominated by a few closed-source projects owned by huge companies with near-limitless resources. But that doesn't mean the problem can't be cracked as an open-source project. This week we look at the open source map library Ferrostar. Joining me to discuss it is the project's lead developer, Ian Wagner, as we explore the problem space and dive down into Ferrostar's architecture: A core Rust library serving a suite of custom UI shells written in Kotlin, Swift, WASM and TypeScript.Along the way there are tips for anyone attempting to build a map, or wanting to interop Rust with other languages.–Support Developer Voices on Patreon: https://patreon.com/DeveloperVoicesSupport Developer Voices on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@developervoices/joinFerrostar on Github: https://github.com/stadiamaps/ferrostarFerrostar user guide: https://stadiamaps.github.io/ferrostar/MapLibre: https://maplibre.org/Project OSRM: https://project-osrm.org/Dioxus (Rust UI framework): https://dioxuslabs.com/Slint: https://slint.dev/UniFFI (repo): https://github.com/mozilla/uniffi-rsUniFFI (user guide): https://mozilla.github.io/uniffi-rs/latest/Beeline (navigation device): https://beeline.co/Ian on Mastodon: https://fosstodon.org/@ianthetechieIan on Twitter: https://x.com/ianthetechieKris on Mastodon: http://mastodon.social/@krisajenkinsKris on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/krisjenkins/Kris on Twitter: https://twitter.com/krisajenkins
A Way with Words — language, linguistics, and callers from all over
If you make a beeline for something, you're taking the shortest route possible. You're also mimicking bee-havior! After a bee has visited enough flowers to gather nectar, she flies straight back to the hive. And: Even a word like throttlebottom looks gorgeous if a calligrapher gets hold of it. Plus, the Oxford English Dictionary added the word babyccino. It's a hot, frothy drink for kids — all milk and caffeine-free. Also, I don't care to, a quiz about imaginary schools, how to pronounce species, how to guess someone's dialect, joner and jonered, ejectamenta, snout-fair, and it's dark under the table. Warm greetings to all you spirit aficionados! Crank up the volume as we raise a toast to the craftsmanship of industry titans like Harlan Wheatley and Drew Mayville. Their contrasting whiskey releases have us appreciating the fine art of blending and distilling.Set sail with us on a flavor voyage that's anything but ordinary. Jefferson's Bourbon, with its sea-aged offerings, teaches us that sometimes, the most innovative ideas are actually a revival of the past. We savor the salty notes of Voyage 29 and dissect the calm sea's influence on the 25th voyage, proving that these aging techniques are no mere marketing ploy. Each sip leads to further discovery, as we cast a spotlight on the Jefferson's Reserve Twin Oak Single Barrel, and share glimpses into the Beeline's curated whiskey wonders that beckon the bourbon-curious.The journey doesn't end there, for our whiskey community keeps the spirit flowing with vibrant events that knit us closer together. We give a nod to the enthusiasm bubbling in Covington and Elizabethtown, where the bourbon beats are as lively as our stories. I'll also tease what's to come, keeping your passion for whiskey exploration stoked. So, whether you're an old hand or new to the dance of the distill, stick around for a pour of camaraderie, laughter, and the shared pursuit of the perfect dram. Good digital marketing is key to letting people know what your cause is all about, great digital marketing consistently attracts new donors by leveraging tools, platforms, and tactics available to nonprofit fundraisers to maximum effect.Today Jena dives into digital marketing for nonprofits with Chris Barlow, Founder and Director of Beeline, keeping it simple as they dip into deep marketing principles and the power of active listening to gain, and retain, new supporters. Discover how listening plays into developing a catalyzing digital marketing strategy, from search ads to emails, and how you can harness the immense impact of active listening and authentic messaging for your organization. We have a wide range of resources to support your digital strategy development, including these e-book downloads from Beeline:
As Founder and Customer Happiness Director of Beeline, Chris is thankful to get to help nonprofits grow their mission and donor base through digital marketing, specifically Google Grant, Bing, and Facebook ads. Most of all, he's thankful to be the dad to seven kids and to help them learn to live generously. Key Takeaways:Digital marketing is a powerful tool for nonprofits to achieve their organizational goals. The key to having an effective digital marketing strategy is to focus on giving value. Create content that addresses donor's questions, entertains, and solves their problems. When you focus on producing valuable content for your audience, you won't have to waste too much effort on self-promotion. People will naturally gravitate toward you. Leverage existing content to provide value without sacrificing too much time, collaborate with partners in creating mutually beneficial projects, and utilize Google Ad Grants to increase awareness and grow email lists. Take a step-by-step approach to building relationships and enrolling people in the organization. Utilize tools like Facebook lead ads and Google Ads to attract new subscribers. Focus on creating engaging content to continually attract new donors. “It's not just attraction. It's nourishing. The flower provides nourishment for the bee. it's not just about making ourselves look nicer.” “A lead magnet is putting together a piece of content that is valuable, is helpful, provides an answer to questions that your potential donors have and helps them solve a problem, or entertains them.” “Google grants are effective if your attitude and approach is, ‘What are people looking for? And how can we meet them there?'” - Chris Barlow Reach out to Chris Barlow at:Website: https://yourbeeline.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/cbarlow-nonprofit-marketing/Email: chris@yourbeeline.com Ask for and receive all you want need and deserve without feeling rejected, ineffective, or pushy. I've always dreamed of competing at the FCI AWC (Agility World Championships) with a dog. Dogs age, health and team requirements have always prevented me from getting the chance. Finally with my greatest agility dog to date, I was chosen to represent Canada at this event. I trained and prepared intensely for the toughest competition I'd ever experience. I flew all the way across the world to the Czech Republic with my dog. Unfortunately, before the event, I learned that I would not be allowed to run due to Bee-Line not making the height requirements. I wanted a chance to speak about exactly what happened. When a swarm of bees kept relocating to the walls of Jay Bennett's bush house every summer, the Taupō man started thinking about how to put his regular visitors to use. After picking up a "bee suit" and a copy of Practical Beekeeping in New Zealand, Jay eventually became the keeper of hundreds of hives in the Taupo region. Two years on, he's turning his delicious honey into alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages at the craft meadery Beehave.
Today's Five-Star Guest is Chris Barlow, Founder of Beeline. Marketing your nonprofit organization shouldn't be an afterthought. Effective marketing is what helps others learn about your organization's mission and work. It's how you encourage those outside of your immediate circle of influence to get involved and grow your base of supporters. Most small nonprofits don't have the funds to keep an in-house marketing expert on staff. Even when this is the case, the person usually lacks one or two of the many skills required to implement effective marketing. So, the task of marketing often falls on other staff members who are already wearing multiple hats and don't necessarily have the unique expertise required to market an organization successfully.Working with the nonprofit marketing experts at Beeline may be just the solution you need!Learn More About Beeline: https://yourbeeline.com/Learn More About Chris/Follow His Newsletter: https://yourbeeline.com/our-story/Get on our waiting list for our new nonprofit & fundraising community filled with on-demand courses and live webinars that are exclusive to members! What's your job title? Chris Barlow, chief happiness director at Beeline Marketing, takes the cake in my humble opinion.Hear some of his insights from running tons of successful marketing campaigns for nonprofits. One of his driving principles: “If you serve people, they will be attracted to you.” As a nonprofit, service is at the core of your mission, and if you serve your donors and supporters as well, your community and impact are going to expand too!---------------Bio:Chris likes seeing good things multiply in the world. As the founder and customer happiness director of Beeline, every day he is grateful to get to help nonprofits use digital marketing to multiply the reach of their mission and the growth of their donors. Most of all, he's grateful to be the dad to seven kids, and to try to teach them how to live in a way that multiplies good in others.Guest links:Chris's LinkedIn profile: linkedin.com/in/cbarlow-nonprofit-marketing/Beeline Marketing: https://yourbeeline.com/Chris says, “If some of the ideas in this episode sounded like a strategy you want to apply for your own org, just download our free book on attracting new donors through digital marketing!” You can find that e-book right here: https://yourbeeline.com/finding-donors/Quote:“Because when you start to say, I don't know, it opens up this whole new world. You can say, ‘Hey, I don't have to be an expert anymore. Now, not having all the answers. I get to be an experimenter.'” - Jeff Giddens at NIO 2022Check out Jeff's entire talk or see other amazing speakers here: https://www.niosummit.com/videos-2022/Additional links:A comprehensive guide to the Google Ad Grant: https://www.feathr.co/resources/blog/google-ad-grantConnected Families: https://connectedfamilies.org/Bright Spot Network: https://www.brightspotnetwork.org/Playlist:Chaconne by BachBe Still, My Soul by Catharina von SchlegelStrange Meadowlark by Dave Brubeck***Hosted by the brilliant team at Feathr.coFeathr is the nonprofit marketing platform designed to help mission and member-based organizations build purposeful connections with their community to grow impact with confidence.

As you've seen, Season 3 is dedicated to my father, Mike Jacox, who passed away late in 2021. I Love and miss you, Dad. Our next guest, Brett Cavanagh, comes to us through the power of relationships. He is a good friend of Rodrigo Alcaine, our guest, last week. Brett is the Chief Revenue Officer (CRO) for TempWorks, a software company that is a leader in serving the staffing industry. As the CRO, Brett draws from his strategic leadership and market analysis background to build partnerships across the nation and deliver a superior client experience.Today, we talk to Brett, the dad who has a beautiful wife and two exceptional children. Brett was raised in Chicago, and in his words, he had the perfect childhood surrounded by five boys and two girls. His father was a successful salesman at Xerox, servicing the United Airlines account for 32 years! Their family's faith and relationships were of the utmost importance. One key piece of advice Brett took from his parents is that work is work, and it must not define you. Brett's family was about authenticity, vulnerability, and being present with intention. These are lessons he will continue to foster and build in his family! One of the challenges that will resonate with many fathers at home is the struggle of putting his phone down when it's family time! He is committing to making this a habit so that he can be as present with his family. Additionally, Brett shared a very personal and challenging story as he and his wife dealt with a miscarriage. Lastly, Brett's advice for other fathers looking to be their home's ultimate leader is to lean in on Vulnerability, Curiosity, and intentionality. To connect with Brett, you can find him on LinkedIn, or to learn more about TempWorks, you can visit them at www.tempworks.com.Catch Sitka Seafoods Use promo code TAKE15 at checkout for a 15% discount on the BEST FISH EVER!Established in 2006, Acme Homes WA One of the most value-based home builders in the state of Washington!
