Financier Jay Gould was one of the most famous — and infamous — of the Gilded Age robber barons. He was ruthless in his business dealings, tangled with the Vanderbilts for control of the railroads and fought battle after battle on Wall Street. But there was a less contentious side to him as well. Gould sought respite from New York City with his family at his country home, Lyndhurst Mansion in Tarrytown, a rolling estate where instead of Wall St. warrior he could be father and husband. Lyndhurst may be familiar to viewers of the HBO series The Gilded Age since a number of its rooms served as filming locations in the show.  The mansion and estate are owned and managed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and visitors are welcomed year-round. In this unique episode, The Gilded Gentleman travels to Lyndhurst for a look inside both the Mansion and the life of Jay Gould. Howard Zar, executive director of Lyndhurst, joins Carl for a fascinating interview recorded in the picture gallery in Jay Gould's own mansion. Surrounded by Gould's precious hand-chosen art collection (still hung as Gould intended), Howard and Carl delve into what life was like at the Mansion and what visitors can see today. As a special treat, follow along with Howard and Carl on a tour through the Mansion visiting Gould's reception room, library, private office and dining room.

Hailing from Palm Springs, California, this six-year-old male became the first of his breed to achieve this esteemed honor. Originally bred for hare tracking in the Vendee region of western France, Buddy Holly's triumph marks a significant milestone for the petit basset griffon Vendeen breed. Janice Hayes, Buddy Holly's co-owner and handler, expressed her astonishment at their victory, stating, "I never thought PBGV would do this. Buddy Holly truly embodies the essence of a champion show dog." Each breed showcased at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show represents the culmination of years of artificial selection, carefully refining and enhancing specific traits inherited from their ancestral wolves. The competition's participants were classified into seven distinct groups to determine the ultimate best in show finalists: hound, toy, non-sporting, herding, sporting, working, and terrier. Buddy Holly emerged as the winner of the hound group, showcasing his exemplary qualities within his breed. The runner-up, receiving the prize for reserve best in show, was awarded to Rummie, a Pekingese from the toy group. Bred and owned by David Fitzpatrick, Rummie demonstrated the exceptional characteristics that epitomize the breed. The judges meticulously evaluated the dogs by examining them up close, physically interacting with them, and observing how the handlers led them around the floor. The dogs were assessed based on breed standards, including appearance, temperament, size, coat, and other defining characteristics. The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, which traces its origins back to 1877, has grown into a highly anticipated annual event and a staple on television broadcasts. This year, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the show took place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, New York, the site of the renowned U.S. Open tennis tournament. In previous years, the event was traditionally held at Madison Square Garden in Midtown Manhattan but was relocated to a smaller venue at Lyndhurst Mansion as a precautionary measure. Buddy Holly's groundbreaking victory not only solidifies his place in dog show history but also serves as an inspiration to future generations of petit basset griffon Vendeen enthusiasts. Reference article:https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/dog-named-buddy-holly-is-first-its-breed-win-westminster-show-2023-05-10/ https://tw.stock.yahoo.com/news/%E5%9C%96%E8%BC%AF-%E7%8B%97%E7%95%8C%E5%A5%A7%E6%96%AF%E5%8D%A1-%E8%A5%BF%E6%95%8F%E5%AF%BA%E7%8A%AC%E5%B1%95%E7%99%BB%E5%A0%B4-%E9%80%99%E9%9A%BB%E6%AF%9B%E5%AD%A9%E9%A6%96%E5%A5%AA%E5%86%A0-095309716.html Powered by Firstory Hosting

It’s the 13th of July, so it’s time for the Advent Calendar House to unearth one of our favorite Halloween haunts, 1979’s “The Halloween That Almost Wasn’t,” starring an exceptionally great Judd Hirsch as Count Dracula. On This EpisodeMike Westfall (@fallwestmike), Transylvanian mother who apparently needs two whole days apply my kids’ costume makeup.Tom Coombs (@ClassicTomedy), creature tap-dancing with someone else’s feet, from TPIF: Thank Pod It’s Funny.Topics and TangentsThis was renamed for its VHS release as “The Night Dracula Saved the World,” except no, he doesn’t.Lyndhurst Mansion plays the role of both Dracula’s castle and the Witch’s castle. It’s located in New York state, not far from Sleepy Hollow. The opening music, Bach’s “Toccata and Fugue in D minor,” was never in a Dracula movie. Its first uses in sound film were in 1931’s “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” and 1934’s “The Black Cat,” starring Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi. My association of the music to Dracula probably stems from its use on Castle Dracula, a haunted boat ride on the Wildwood, New Jersey boardwalk that burned down in 2002.Jack Riley (Warren the Werewolf) was also the voice of Stu Pickles on “Rugrats,” and did a bunch of Country Crock spread commercials.Either it’s a small film goof, or it takes Igor a good minute and a half to realize he’s holding the Witch’s broom.Do local Transylvania kids just know where this Witch lives, like a Hollywood celebrity homes tour?Judd Hirsch as Dracula exaggeratedly disco dancing in a white “Saturday Night Fever” jumpsuit is the greatest way to end anything ever.Previous Podcast Episodes MentionedWitch’s Night Out (Season 1, Bonus)The Star Wars Holiday Special (Season 2, Episode 2)Garfield’s Halloween Adventure (Season 2, Bonus)“The Halloween That Almost Wasn’t” © 1979 Concepts Unlimited.Commercial Break: McDonald’s “Scared Silly” Halloween commercial, starring Ronald McDonald and the Chicken McNuggets. The Advent Calendar House is on the web at adventcalendar.house, on Twitter @adventcalhouse, and part of the Christmas Podcast Network.

Will McKinley loves House of Dark Shadows. As a high school student, working for former Jonathan Frid nights and weekends on a series of one-man shows that had originated at fan conventions, the 1970 feature film was his gateway into the world of Dark Shadows.   Nancy Kersey, a creative collaborator with Frid in those days, does not love House of Dark Shadows, a film she believes does a disservice to the television series. On Oct. 19, they made a pilgrimage to Lyndhurst Mansion in Tarrytown, New York — the film's shooting location — to debate the merits of the big screen version of Barnabas Collins.
