Musician Marcus Whale shares a prepubescent story of online romance, distance and self-discovery. Marcus Whale is a musician and performer working on Gadigal land. As a performer, he is a member of duo Collarbones and trio BV, as well as work under his own name, releasing an album "Inland Sea" in June 2016. Primarily forming an electronic world around his singing, the songs across these projects play out dramas of desire and projection while disfiguring forms of pop, club and contemporary classical music. Marcus Whale has been straddling the worlds of experimental music and alternative pop throughout his career, from his early improvisational work as Scissor Lock, through the densely layered electronic pop of Collarbones to the taut, politically charged BV project he formed with Guerre aka Cassius Select. In this episode, we celebrate Marcus’ debut solo release under his own name, as he talks about his work, his personal growth, and his political intent, and reflects on the outcomes – one foot on both sides of the channel.Originally broadcast on 'Out From Under' on Resonance Extra.
In this episode we'll head back to Ears Have Ears LIVE #1 - the first in a performance series which took place onstage at FBi's live broadcast space in front of a studio audience. From choirboy to heathen, Marcus Whale has become one of Sydney's most consistently interesting singers, songwriters and performers. He pops and locks with Collarbones, raves to the grave with Black Vanilla and leads a one-man army as a newly-minted solo artist - all the while delivering challenging, unique takes on electronically-tinged outsider music. During an afternoon of lawn bowls and live music at the Petersham Bowling Club's Bad Day Out back in January, Whale talks through his journey of post-rock forums, bad sax solos and the vision that lead to his debut solo album, Inland Sea. Thomas William is a fixture of Sydney’s experimental music scene, shapeshifting through many guises as a musician, teacher, and director of artist run initiative, Serial Space. His blend of shifting synths, broken percussion and unstable tunings has so far featured on three full-length releases, two as Cleptoclectics, and a third on Melbourne’s ‘This Thing’ imprint.Marcus Whale’s relentless restlessness has seen him present a unique combination of manipulated voice, feedback and laptop processing under his Scissor Lock pseudonym, as well his much-lauded Collarbones project with Travis Cook (aka Cyst Impaled) and his debauched faux R&B boy band Black Vanilla (formed with Guerre and Marseilles).
Well known experimental musicians in their own right, MARCUS WHALE (also known as SCISSOR LOCK) and TRAVIS COOK (who performs as CYST IMPALED) moved into unique territory in 2010, recording as alternative pop duo COLLARBONES. Marcus and Travis joined Stu Buchanan to talk about their evolving project and to play live in the studio. They also discussed their (then) forthcoming live appearance with Melbourne’s PSUCHE (feat Oscar Key Sung). In addition to hearing the tracks ‘Kill Off The Vowels’ and ‘Beaman Park’, we also hear them play a cover of the PSUCHE track ‘I See A Wolf’ and preview the new PSUCHE album with the track, ‘Recognise’.
SCISSOR LOCK is an experimental project of Sydney musician Marcus Whale, exploring the tension between organic and electronic elements in sound, utilising guitar, reeds, voice, piano, singing bowls and bells along with somewhat lo-fi digital processing. In this interview (originally broadcast 12th November 2009), Marcus discussed his remix project, ‘Now’, featuring contributions from Raven, Shoeb Ahmad and Pimmon. The podcast also includes an exclusive, in-studio performance of ‘Out By Holy Land (Scissor Lock vs Pimmon vs Scissor Lock Remix)’.
The second of three specials featuring live sets recorded at the FBi Radio fundraiser 'Unpopular Music' at The Red Rattler in Sydney. This week sound artist, musician and chronic circuit bender Nick Wishart (Toydeath); noise artist, musician and label manager Anna Vo performing as Anon; and Scissor Lock, an experimental project from musician Marcus Whale.
