Avec l'âge, de nombreuses personnes se plaignent d'un phénomène aussi banal qu'agaçant : la peau qui gratte. Ce symptôme, souvent discret au départ, peut devenir chronique et gêner considérablement la qualité de vie. Mais pourquoi cette démangeaison s'intensifie-t-elle avec le temps ? Les chercheurs en dermatologie ont identifié plusieurs mécanismes bien établis pour expliquer ce phénomène.Une peau qui s'affine… et s'assècheLa première cause, la plus fréquente, c'est la sécheresse cutanée, aussi appelée xérose. En vieillissant, notre peau produit moins de sébum, cette fine couche grasse naturelle qui protège la surface cutanée. Le film hydrolipidique, qui maintient l'hydratation, devient plus mince et moins efficace. Résultat : l'eau s'évapore plus vite de la peau, qui devient rugueuse, tendue… et sujette aux démangeaisons.De plus, la capacité de la peau à produire des lipides et à retenir l'eau diminue, notamment à cause d'une baisse de certaines protéines (comme la filaggrine) et d'un ralentissement du renouvellement cellulaire. Cette peau « en déficit d'hydratation » devient plus réactive à la moindre agression : froid, vent, vêtements irritants, savons agressifs...Un système nerveux plus sensibleAutre facteur aggravant : l'altération des fibres nerveuses cutanées. Avec l'âge, les nerfs de la peau peuvent devenir plus sensibles, ou au contraire moins efficaces, et envoyer des signaux erronés au cerveau. Une simple sensation de frottement peut ainsi être interprétée comme une démangeaison. Ce phénomène est encore mal compris, mais il expliquerait pourquoi certaines personnes âgées souffrent de prurit sans cause dermatologique visible.Une immunité qui changeLe système immunitaire aussi se modifie avec l'âge. La peau devient moins tolérante aux bactéries, champignons ou irritants chimiques, même en faible quantité. Certains souffrent ainsi d'eczéma, de dermatite de contact ou de réactions allergiques sans en avoir jamais eu avant. Ces inflammations légères peuvent se manifester uniquement par des démangeaisons persistantes.Médicaments et maladies chroniquesEnfin, il ne faut pas négliger l'impact de certains médicaments (comme les diurétiques ou les statines) ou de maladies chroniques fréquentes chez les seniors : insuffisance rénale, diabète, troubles hépatiques ou thyroïdiens. Tous peuvent provoquer un prurit généralisé, souvent sans autre signe visible.Que faire ?La première mesure est simple : hydrater régulièrement la peau avec des crèmes émollientes sans parfum. Ensuite, il faut éviter les produits irritants, porter des vêtements doux, et consulter si les démangeaisons deviennent invalidantes ou inexpliquées. Have you ever felt so super excited to share something new you've learned but also uncertain or afraid that you're stealing someone else's work? During this month's episode, Chela calls in. She shares that having graduated from the S.W.A.T. Institute's Master Empowerment Coach Certification, she's now excited to be holding group coaching sessions and seminars for women in both Argentina, where she spends three quarters of the year and in Canada (in Spanish and English -- exciting!). Chela has questions about the best way to use someone else's work in her sessions and incorporate it into her work while still crediting them. "Am I allowed to do this?" she wonders. She even says she's been up at night worrying about it. We dive into that! Chela also asks if it's possible to show up in different energy levels or levels of empowerment in different areas of her life based on the situation. For instance, she feels so in the flow and up in Desire or higher while teaching; however, when she has to speak about money or pricing, she almost drops into Shame. Gabrielle also joins the last bit of the call and shares that she was a nurse for 30 years and has recently retired. Her husband is in the military and deployed, gone much of the time. And in this new chapter of her life, now certified in different healing modalities, she's SO ready to share her gifts and talents with the world and help better the lives of others through heart alignment. However, she feels this resistance and protectiveness over her energy. Gabrielle also shares she doesn't know where to start in terms of her next steps in her business. In this episode we speak with retired Army Colonel, Dr. Philip Blair, MD, a Family Physician, complex disease management consultant and remarkable cannabis medicine expert in the Pacific Northwest providing services globally.  After graduating from West Point he trained as an Army Family Physician, and served as a combat doctor during the 1st Gulf War. He retired from the Army as a Colonel after serving as a medical officer on three continents. I decided to finally take a course a friend of mine has on writing and performing solo shows, and the experience made me realize the importance of giving reverence and dedicated time to my creative writing. Knowing that I uphold my commitments to others, I decided to start the Creative Cauldron, a community where us artists and creators could gather, support each other, and work on our projects in community. Chela Armstrong can tell you life is hard--she's the wife of Pastor Gary Armstrong--OK, that's a bad joke. You heard Gary's Grace Story a couple weeks ago. Now, here's the other half of that story. Chela did have a hard life growing up and adjusting to adulthood and marriage. She and Gary had a rocky path until both found the Lord. Life had some dramatic changes in store for them. But all is well snd they minister together at Burleson Bible Church in Texas. Chela offers some insights along the way as she tells her story that started out rough, but keeps getting better. Though he was raised in a good church and knew enough of the Bible, he strayed onto a path that led away from God and eventually to prison. But this was a turning point for Gary Armstrong. He remembered what he had learned about God's Word and way. The more he studied the Bible, the more he found hope, encouragement, and freedom. After prison, Gary had to adjust to a new life. He got married to Chela, got biblical training, and entered pastoral ministry, eventually landing in his present position as pastor of Burleson Bible Church in Texas. In this episode we interview Efemia Chela. Chela is a Zambian-Ghanian writer, literary critic, and an editor. Efemia joins us in her role as the commissioning editor at Inkani Books, which is the publishing division of The Tricontinental Pan Africa NPC, a research institute that collaborates with and is aligned with the work of the Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research. In this conversation Efemia shares a bit about some of the current struggles in South Africa, and situates Inkani Books as a publisher within those struggles as well as within their broader African continental context as a Pan African publishing house.  The focus of this discussion is Inkani's latest book, Tell No Lies, Claim No Easy Victories which brings together an extensive set of Amílcar Cabral's interviews, official speeches and PAIGC party directives from 1962 through 1973. It features a foreword by Grant Farred and an introduction by Sónia Vaz Borges who we've previously hosted on the podcast.  We engage Efemia about several of Cabral's important theoretical interventions, and the grounding of his theory in the real movement of the Guinean and Cape Verdean people and their liberation struggles. We talk about the continued relevance of his thought today to people and movements across the African continent, and discuss studying it in group contexts. Among other things, we discuss the idea of a new humanity forged in struggle, Cabral's thinking on culture, on patriarchy, his caution with regards to decolonization and neocolonialism, and the question of what Cabral calls organic security for radical and revolutionary movements.  We want to deeply thank everyone who has been supporting us over these last 5 years.
