To say FKA twigs in her near-decade career has seen and experienced it all is an understatement. Since first arriving in 2012 as a hot artist to watch, which each release twigs has extended her alt-baroque-electronic world with each new release, culminating in the grandiose opus Magdalene. In the time since, between some very public and very private battles and a pandemic, twigs took some time to recuperate and nearly stepped away from music altogether. Little did she know, in taking "a break", she'd piece herself and her craft back together again, empowered by the everyday intimacy of life itself. Caprisongs is twigs' jubilant and carefree rebirth, where she steadies for mainstream domination. TRACKS PLAYED: 'ride the dragon' 'honda feat. pa salieu' 'meta angel' 'tears in the club feat. the weeknd' 'oh my love' 'pamplemousse' 'caprisongs interlude feat. solo' 'lightbeamers' 'papi bones feat. shygirl' 'which way feat. dystopia' 'jealousy feat. rema' 'careless feat. daniel caesar' 'minds of men' 'track girl interlude' 'darjeeling feat. jorja smith, unknown t' 'christi interlude' 'thank you song' See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In July 2018, blackgaze (black metal/shoegaze) juggernauts Deafheaven released one of the most unique records in recent memory. Stomach churning vocals balanced across delicate, graceful instrumentation and tropes of classic rock. This was not blast beat, evil black metal; this was pretty and hopeful. Ordinary Corrupt Human Love is a masterwork of blended styes which despite their completely divergent nature, sound beautiful rather than devastating. TRACKS PLAYED: ‘You Without End' ‘Honeycomb' ‘Canary Yellow' ‘Near' ‘Glint' ‘Night People' ‘Worthless Animal'. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Back for the first episode of 2022 and diving right into one of the very best techno records of last year. More of a refined evolution than any kind of reinvention of the wheel, I Don't Live Here Anymore is The War on Drugs at the very peak of their powers. With supreme love and care pooled into every minute detail of the record, frontman, Adam Granduciel has put together an uplifting classic/stadium rock record that deserves to be listened to on your best set of speakers or headphones. TRACKS PLAYED: ‘Living Proof' ‘Harmonia's Dream' ‘Change' ‘I Don't Wanna Wait' ‘… Victim' ‘I Don't Live Here Anymore feat. Subtle and unassuming on the surface, Erika de Casier e Ramos Lizardo's record, Sensational, possesses extraordinary depth. Harkening back to the early naughties whisper-sung R&B stylings of artists like Craig David, de Casier revitalises what feels like an aged sound with self-taught, self-completed, modern production. A stunning album which will only grow on you with each and every listen. TRACKS PLAYED: ‘Drama' ‘Polite' ‘Make My Day' ‘All You Talk About' ‘Insult Me' ‘No Butterflies, No Nothing' ‘Someone to Chill With' ‘Acceptance - Intermezzo' ‘Better Than That' ‘Friendly' ‘Secretly' ‘Busy' ‘Call Me Anytime'. Now onto her second album back as an independent artist, Tinashe is finding freedom creatively and sonically. An exciting, sexy and stunningly varied look into the worlds of R&B, Pop, Hip-Hop and even EDM, the lightness of Tinashe's touch throughout almost feels like a subtle flex. One of our favourite records of all of 2021. TRACKS PLAYED: ‘Let Go' ‘I Can See The Future' ‘X' ‘SHY GUY' ‘Bouncin' ‘Unconditional' ‘Angels' ‘333' ‘Undo (Back To My Heart)' ‘Let Me Down Slowly' ‘Last Call' ‘The Chase' ‘Pasadena' ‘Small Reminders' ‘Bouncin', Pt.2' ‘It's a Wrap'. If we could travel back to 2016, not a day would go by without hearing something positive about, or simply just hearing Car Seat Headrest. Teens of Denial had music nerds and critical darlings everywhere swooning. The thirteenth (!) record in 23 year old, Will Toledo's catalogue, provided hooks, riffs, lyrics and arrangements so ludicrously sweet, we still yearn for them to this day. TRACKS PLAYED: ‘Fill in the Blank' ‘Vincent' ‘Destroyed By Hippie Powers' ‘(Joe Gets Kicked Out of School for Using) Drugs With Friends' ‘Not What I Needed' ‘Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales' '1937 State Park' ‘Unforgiving Girl (She's Not An)' ‘Cosmic Hero' ‘Connect the Dots (The Saga of Frank Sinatra)' ‘Joe Goes to School'. In 2021's year of Hip-Hop, there hasn't been a mountain of new music to really shift the dial in terms of where the new standard should be set. Mirror II is the third full length record from The Goon Sax, an indie pop/rock trio from Brisbane who formed as friends in high school. They initially grew to acclaim through their debut and sophomore records, 'Up To Anything' and 'We're Not Talking', while Mirror II only continues that trajectory. The record is a fascinating and hugely enjoyable example in their progression as a band. Their continued growth serves both as a bit of a reflection on the times, as well as an exciting jump into a comparatively new sound. TRACKS INCLUDE: 'In The Stone' 'Psychic' 'Tag' 'Temples' 'Make Time 4 Love (We're Not Talking)' 'We Can't Win (We're Not Talking)' 'The Chance' 'Bathwater' 'Desire' 'Carpetry' 'Til Dawn' 'Caterpillars'. Taking a slight detour from the unbridled energy of their debut record, black midi return with Cavalcade. A deeply intricate, anxiety inducing, unpredictable mega-statement from a band who's buzz can seemingly only grow right now. Joined by lead vocalist of the group, Geordie Greep, Maia gets the lowdown on the stylistic changes through album two and what's still to come from young Londeners. Watch this space. TRACKS INCLUDE: 'John L' 'Marlene Dietrich' 'Chondromalacia Patella' 'Slow' 'Diamond Stuff' 'Dethroned' 'Hogwash & Balderdash' 'Ascending Forth'. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Sydney Bass is a collaborative project by 3NDLES5 (Mitch Tolman of Low Life) and Crazymike (Michael Hassett of DEN). Two premier local songwriters, combining to create something totally left of field from their typical band-work. Busting at the seams with influences from UK Garage, Punk, Rave music, Two-step and so much more. This is masterful hooliganism from the bottom of the world. TRACKS INCLUDE: 'Piano Room' 'Dave I' 'Matchday' 'Dave Pt 2' 'RBB (by Low Life)' 'Eclipse (by DEN)' 'XL' 'Ibra' 'God' 'Lush' 'CCB' 'Rave Slave' 'Faces' 'CCB [Mallgrab Remix]' 'Match Day (Greta Now ft. Released through Fader Label, Troubled Paradise is born from the inspiration of 2000s pop and pop culture. The sounds and imagery of people like Britney Spears, Lindsey Lohan, Paris Hilton, Gwen Stefani and Lady Gaga all smooshed into one big, distinct, MySpace-era-like rainbow. So passionately pop, it's almost punk. Joined by none other than Slayyyter herself, Maia got to chat through all these themes, and break down Troubled Paradise track by track. TRACKS INCLUDE: 'Self Destruct feat. Wuki' 'Venom' 'Throatzillaaa' 'Dog House' 'Butterflies...' 'Troubled Paradise' 'Clouds' 'Cowboys' 'Serial Killer' 'Over This!' 'Villain' 'Letters'. Lee Tran Lam talks to Alice Ivy about her second album, Don't Sleep, which was nominated for an Australian Music Prize. The Melbourne artist finished the record just as the world went into lockdown last year. She talks about collaborating with local greats Thelma Plum, Ecca Vandal and more, plus her international songwriting sessions with Cadence Weapon and other overseas collaborators on the record. She also covers the surreal way her Ecca Vandal track, "In My Mind", blew up around the world thanks to an Apple ad, while she was stuck in Melbourne during its intense 100+ day lockdown. This album was created at airports, on airplanes, in sweaty basements, in studios where the power cut out and has a million stories behind it. TRACKS INCLUDE: ‘Champagne Late Nights' ‘Sunrise feat. 10 years ago, Manchester, England collective WU LYF (or World Unite Lucifer Youth Foundation) released a record, and enacted in a moment, Go Tell Fire To The Mountain, which kind of came and went. Melodic, irresistibly complex and just a little bit immature, Black Country, New Road have exploded from their home in London to the attention of post-punk fans the world over. However, this record is about as serious a debut as they come. A brooding, brutal cacophony of noise and anger, Gas Lit is a near-unspoken tearing down of societal structures as we know them. It's not often you hear a record that can flip from dreamy pop to spacey electronic music with an ease as if to say it's nothing. But then it's not often you find an artist who is equally captivating and adept at producing as they are singing and songwriting. Nearly every album released in 2020 will be viewed through the lens of the pandemic and the context of the times. So many encapsulated the feeling of melancholy that such a vast majority of the world could relate. It Is What It Is though, is perhaps a more true reflection of the year that was. By no means perfect, often unfocused, disorienting, emotional and a stylistic rollercoaster. Thundercat's latest is 2020 in a record, warts and all. TRACKS PLAYED: ‘Lost In Space / Great Scott / 22-26' ‘Interstellar Love' ‘I Love Louis Cole' ‘Them Changes' ‘Dragonball Durag' ‘Miguel's Happy Dance' ‘Funny Thing' ‘Overseas (feat. Zack Scott)' ‘Existential Dread' ‘Black Qualls (feat. Steve Lacy, Steve Arrington, Childish Gambino)' ‘How I Feel' ‘King of the Hill' ‘Fair Chance (feat. Ty Dolla $ign, Lil B)' ‘How Sway' ‘Unrequited Love' ‘Me and my Bass Guitar [Victor Wooten]' ‘Too High [Stevie Wonder]' ‘It Is What It Is'. This episode is guest hosted by Bart Denaro. MC/Producer Daniel Dumile, best known as MF DOOM, passed away on the 31st October, 2020 aged 49. He left behind one of the all time great hip hop resumés and influenced a bevy of today's artists so large, it would be impossible to list them all. Arguably his greatest work was 2004's Madvillainy, a masterpiece collaboration he made with superproducer Madlib. One of the most important hip hop albums ever recorded, just remember, ALL CAPS when you spell the man name. TRACKS PLAYED: ‘Do Not Fire! (Instrumental)' ‘The Illest Villains' ‘Accordion' ‘Meat Grinder' ‘Bistro' ‘Fancy Clown' ‘America's Most Blunted (feat. Quasimoto)' ‘Sickfit (Instrumental)' ‘Rainbows' ‘Curls' ‘Shadows of Tomorrow (feat. Quasimoto)' ‘Operation Lifesaver aka Mint Test' ‘Figaro' ‘Raid (feat. MED)' ‘Money Folder' ‘Red Water [Earl Sweatshirt]' ‘Eye (feat. Stacey Epps)' ‘Supervillain Theme (Instrumental)' ‘All Caps' ‘Great Day' ‘Rhinestone Cowboy'. This episode is guest hosted by Bart Denaro and ex-Kid Confucius bass player and Madvillain superfan Nathan Murray. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
“You want a timeless song / I wanna change the game” sings Dua Lipa on the opening lyrics of self-titled opener, Future Nostalgia. If that was the mission statement for this record, it's safe to say that it has been achieved and then some. Walking the tightrope of disco flavoured nostalgia and futuristic, cherry glazed pop music, Dua Lipa takes us in a direction full of new possibilities. Allowing us to dance away all the anxieties in today's world, if just for a little while. TRACKS PLAYED: ‘Future Nostalgia' ‘Be The One' ‘One Kiss [Calvin Harris feat. Dua Lipa]' ‘Don't Start Now' ‘Cool' ‘Physical' ‘Levitating' ‘Pretty Please' ‘Hallucinate' ‘Love Again' ‘Break My Heart' ‘Good In Bed' ‘Boys Will Be Boys'. Led by Melbourne music scene extraordinaire, Liam ‘Snowy' Halliwell, Snowy Band's debut record is a beautiful piece of work built for isolation. Typically working with the influence of band mates and the goal of performing live, Audio Commentary was written for Snowy to play by himself and for himself at a low volume in his room. Freed from the pressure of chaotic schedules by the pandemic's forced isolation, this record is a stunning exploration on what we really want to do with a surplus of down-time. TRACKS PLAYED: ‘Edge Of The Weekend' ‘Love You To Death' ‘Never Change' ‘Grown Men' ‘The Rest Of Your Life' ‘Been Trying To Explain It' ‘Coast Road' ‘Don't Waste It' ‘More Than Enough' ‘East/West' ‘Don't Want To See You Again'. Nicholas Jaar shocked the electronic world with his unexpected foray into house music under pseudonym, Against All Logic. An instant classic, it was easy to believe his debut would also be his last, such was the mystery shrouding its creation. To say we were shocked again upon the release of its sequel is an understatement. 2017-2019 goes HARD, opening with one of the most incredible twists of 2020 in Beyonce's Baby Boy sample-fuelled, Fantasy. One of the very best electronic records of the year. TRACKS PLAYED: ‘Fantasy' ‘If Loving You Is Wrong' ‘With An Addict' ‘If You Can't Do It Good Do It Hard' ‘Alarm' ‘Deeeeeeefers' ‘Faith' ‘Penny'. The second solo record from Phoebe Bridgers (previously featured on the show for her work in boygenius, alongside Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus) is a deeply sombre, personal and equally stunning achievement; achingly apt for 2020. Unraveling the pain of past trauma, Punisher is a follow up album of the very highest order, as diverse and complex as Bridgers' ever growing catalogue of work. TRACKS PLAYED: ‘DVD Menu' ‘Garden Song' ‘Smoke Signals' ‘Kyoto' ‘Punisher' ‘Halloween' ‘Chinese Satellite' ‘Moon Song' ‘Saviour Complex' ‘ICU' ‘Graceland Too' ‘I Know The End'.
