In 1994, Hong Kongers were counting down to the looming Mainland handover. But some of them were also counting down to the expiry date on a can of pineapples. We discuss Wong Kar-wai's CHUNGKING EXPRESS (1994), a quintessentially Hong Kong movie with universal resonance. Our fifth episode of July 2025 is a very special one: cinematographer and colorist Devan Scott (and host of the podcast How Would Lubitsch Do It?, where Tim was a regular guest) joins Tim to discuss the new Arrow Video UHD releases of A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, on which Devan served as technical advisor as part of a team working to make sure that those films got their first properly-curated and visually restored home releases since the dawn of home media. And from there, they dive into a larger conversation about the nature of film restoration and preservation, the confounding things that happen to movies when they get transferred to home video, and whether Wong Kar-wai can ever be trusted with his own films again. If you're the sort of person who groans inside when you learn that a new Criterion Collection release was based on a L'Immagine Ritrovata restoration, this one is a must-listen.
From July 4 to July 8, Film Comment Editor Devika Girish presented a series at the Brooklyn Academy of Music called Let Them Cook: Cinema of the Rice Cooker, which spotlit movies where the humble household appliance takes on a poetics and pragmatism uniquely suited to the screen. Some of the films in the series included Payal Kapadia's All We Imagine as Light (2024), Claire Denis's 35 Shots of Rum (2008), Wong Kar-wai's In the Mood for Love (2000), Raymond Yip's Sixty Million Dollar Man (2005), Yasujiro Ozu's Good Morning (1959), and Bong Joon Ho's Incoherence (1994). After a screening of Seijun Suzuki's Branded to Kill (1967)—which follows a yakuza assassin with a fetish for the smell of cooking rice—Devika recorded a panel discussion with film scholar and critic Phoebe Chen, The Philadelphia Inquirer's Bedatri Datta Choudhury, and Bon Appétit's Joseph Hernandez about the cinematic appeal of the rice cooker.
I al final del programa us recomanem la sitcom 'The Comeback'.

Wong Kar-wai's FALLEN ANGELS is not like any other movie we're covering for Hitmania! Sure, it has romantic longing, the alienation of the urban landscape, cool gunfights, all that. But no movie we've covered can claim to be so much more about loneliness and sadness than it is about how cool it is to do hitman stuff.

Stylisten Ursula Wångander tittar på Wong Kar-wais In the Mood for Love och drömmer om filmens klänningar. Och designern Bea Szenfeldt minns sin ungdoms många filmer som räddade henne från att smittas av 90-talets minimalism.

linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinemaThis February at Catching Up On Cinema, is “Ladies' Night”!All month long we'll be reviewing action movies headlined by women! This week, Trevor conducts a solo review Johnnie To and Ching Siu-Tung's, The Heroic Trio (1993) and Executioners (1993)!Starring the trio of prestigious Hong Kong starlets, Anita Mui, Maggie Cheung, and Michelle Yeoh, the pair of films were a box office smash in Asia in the early 90's, and was just recently inducted into the Criterion collection via a fabulous new 4k transfer.Singer/actress Anita Mui sadly passed away in 2003, however her cultural footprint remains vast, and in fact a biopic and documentary were made about her in recent years.Maggie Cheung has been a fixture in Hong Kong cinema since the 80's, earning critical acclaim in her later career collaborations with director Wong Kar-wai.Like her costars Mui and Cheung, Michelle Yeoh has been a fixture of Hong Kong and Chinese cinema for decades now, however in more recent years, beginning in the late 90's, her popularity and prominence in film markets outside of Asia has grown by leaps and bounds, culminating in her recently receiving an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022).Follow us on Instagram @catchinguponcinemaFollow us on Twitter @CatchingCinemaLike, share, subscribe, and we'll catch you next time!

Chen Chen talks about genre, creative writing pedagogy, race, and politics as he reflects on his two full-length poetry collections, When I Grow Up I Want To Be A List of Further Possibilities (BOA Editions) and Your Emergency Contact Has Experienced An Emergency (BOA Editions). On the topic of contextual and cultural references, we discussed our displeasure of the general tendency to reference Wong Kar-wai purely for aesthetic reasons without critiquing the politics of nostalgia.
"As Tears Go By" is the debut of filmmaker Wong Kar-wai. It's his love letter to the film "Mean Streets". He shares a tragedy where love is lost, both of the romantic and of the brotherly. I was amazed to see a style of filmmaking and it came out in 1988. It's very stylistic and isn't afraid to push narrative boundaries. My favorite scene of the film is honestly, the ending. I wont say why but it's an effective ending that you don't really get to see in cinema nowadays. It's a film that drama, romance, crime, some comedy, and even existentialism. It's a film about a gangster who tries throughout the whole film, to look out for his best friend, and honestly, his only friend, especially in the world they're in. His friend is always messing up and he has to figure out a way to chamge, or else...It's great film in it's style of filmmaking and a story that's engaging and doesn't spoon feed you#astearsgoby

This Warner Bros. 1947 Studios Year by Year episode features two gems that put their own particular slant on noir's familiar theme of murderous conflict between women and men: Curtis Bernhardt's Possessed, starring a more-than-usually deranged Joan Crawford, with Van Heflin as the rakish object of her obsession, and Delmer Daves' Dark Passage, starring an unusually passive Humphrey Bogart as a man convicted of killing his wife, with Lauren Bacall as an eccentric socialite who decides to help him. And in our Fear and Moviegoing segment, a real clash of moods: Ridley Scott's terrifying sci-fi/horror classic Alien and Wong Kar-wai's whimsical romantic comedy (of a sort) Chungking Express. Though admittedly it also has its terrifying aspects. (If only Van Heflin had been charmed by Crawford's fixation, how differently it could have gone!) Time Codes: 0h 00m 35s: POSSESSED [dir. Picture this: it's the year 2001. Tom Cruise gets braces, The Lord of the Rings has entered the chat, and Russell Crowe is... still here. The omissions are glaring, the discrepancies are stark. Where is Wong Kar-wai? Who is Shrek? And how many Oceans does it take to bring home an Oscar? Two women needed to discuss.*This episode was recorded 4/16/2023 Hosted on Acast. If you like what you hear, and/or would like to give us feedback on how we're doing, follow us at: https://beacons.ai/senornerdpodcast / senornerdpodcast @senornerdpod on Twitter Everything Everywhere All at Once is a 2022 American absurdist science-fiction comedy-drama film written and directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, who produced it with Anthony and Joe Russo and Jonathan Wang; the film incorporates elements from a number of genres and film mediums, including surreal comedy, science fiction, fantasy, martial arts films, immigrant narrative, and animation. Michelle Yeoh stars as Evelyn Quan Wang, a Chinese-American immigrant who, while audited by the IRS, discovers that she must connect with parallel universe versions of herself to prevent a powerful being from destroying the multiverse. The film also stars Stephanie Hsu, Ke Huy Quan, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jenny Slate, Harry Shum Jr., and James Hong in supporting roles. Kwan and Scheinert began work on the project in 2010. Production was announced in 2018, and principal photography ran from January to March 2020. The filmmakers initially sought Jackie Chan for the lead role before the script was revised to feature a female protagonist as part of a wife-husband duo. The works of Hong Kong film director Wong Kar-wai, as well as the children's book Sylvester and the Magic Pebble and the video game Everything, served as inspiration for several scenes. The soundtrack features compositions by Son Lux, including collaborations with Mitski, David Byrne, André 3000, John Hampson, and Randy Newman. The film explores philosophical themes such as existentialism, nihilism, surrealism, and absurdism, as well as themes such as neurodivergence, depr2ession, generational trauma, and Asian American identity. Everything Everywhere All at Once premiered at South by Southwest on March 11, 2022, and began a limited theatrical release in the United States on March 25, 2022, before a wide release by A24 on April 8. The film grossed over $141 million worldwide, becoming A24's highest-grossing film. It garnered widespread critical acclaim, gained a large cult following, and was a success at the 95th Academy Awards, winning a leading seven awards out of eleven nominations: Best Picture, Best Actress for Yeoh, Best Supporting Actor for Quan, Best Supporting Actress for Curtis, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for Kwan and Scheinert, and Best Film Editing. It also won two Golden Globe Awards, five Critics' Choice Awards (including Best Picture), a BAFTA Award, a record four SAG Awards (including Best Ensemble), a record seven Independent Spirit Awards (including Best Feature), and swept the four major guild awards (DGA, PGA, SAG, and WGA). With 266 awards out of 405 nominations, Everything Everywhere All at Once is currently estimated to be the most awarded film of all time.
