Wong Kar-wai's FALLEN ANGELS is not like any other movie we're covering for Hitmania! Sure, it has romantic longing, the alienation of the urban landscape, cool gunfights, all that. But no movie we've covered can claim to be so much more about loneliness and sadness than it is about how cool it is to do hitman stuff.

2007 brought us not only Cooder's solo effort My Name Is Buddy, but also some very interesting contributions. He composed film music for Wong Kar-wai's My Blueberry Nights. And with Mavis Staples, he made an album that's right up there with his best productions. We'll Never Turn Back is not one hundred percent Cooder, but it's certainly ninety-nine and a half. Stylisten Ursula Wångander tittar på Wong Kar-wais In the Mood for Love och drömmer om filmens klänningar.

Chen Chen talks about genre, creative writing pedagogy, race, and politics as he reflects on his two full-length poetry collections, When I Grow Up I Want To Be A List of Further Possibilities (BOA Editions) and Your Emergency Contact Has Experienced An Emergency (BOA Editions). On the topic of contextual and cultural references, we discussed our displeasure of the general tendency to reference Wong Kar-wai purely for aesthetic reasons without critiquing the politics of nostalgia.
"As Tears Go By" is the debut of filmmaker Wong Kar-wai. It's his love letter to the film "Mean Streets". He shares a tragedy where love is lost, both of the romantic and of the brotherly. I was amazed to see a style of filmmaking and it came out in 1988. It's very stylistic and isn't afraid to push narrative boundaries. My favorite scene of the film is honestly, the ending. I wont say why but it's an effective ending that you don't really get to see in cinema nowadays. It's a film that drama, romance, crime, some comedy, and even existentialism. It's a film about a gangster who tries throughout the whole film, to look out for his best friend, and honestly, his only friend, especially in the world they're in. His friend is always messing up and he has to figure out a way to chamge, or else...It's great film in it's style of filmmaking and a story that's engaging and doesn't spoon feed you#astearsgoby

This Warner Bros. 1947 Studios Year by Year episode features two gems that put their own particular slant on noir's familiar theme of murderous conflict between women and men: Curtis Bernhardt's Possessed, starring a more-than-usually deranged Joan Crawford, with Van Heflin as the rakish object of her obsession, and Delmer Daves' Dark Passage, starring an unusually passive Humphrey Bogart as a man convicted of killing his wife, with Lauren Bacall as an eccentric socialite who decides to help him. And in our Fear and Moviegoing segment, a real clash of moods: Ridley Scott's terrifying sci-fi/horror classic Alien and Wong Kar-wai's whimsical romantic comedy (of a sort) Chungking Express. Though admittedly it also has its terrifying aspects. (If only Van Heflin had been charmed by Crawford's fixation, how differently it could have gone!) Time Codes: 0h 00m 35s: POSSESSED [dir. Summer of Hong Kong continues, and today we're pivoting from the 80's and martial arts into the 90's and emotions! And who else could we be talking about but Wong Kar-wai and his 1994 breakthrough, CHUNGKING EXPRESS!While a touchstone for HK cinema today, Wong Kar-wai's big splash into the arthouse scene was anything but at the time. We're discussing how Wong found his way to his style leading up to CHUNGKING, how it captured the Hong Kong attitudes at such a precise moment, and the different relationship phases we recognized in these characters, in addition to highliighting Tony Leung's sad eyes. We're also connecting CHUNGKING EXPRESS to our previous HK movie, YES MADAM and 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN to chart just how we've arrived here. Plus, we get some some surprise foreshadowing for our next episode and the finale of our Hong Kong series: 2002's INFERNAL AFFAIRS!
Welcome to the 80's! We all remember the time: lime green overalls, bolo ties, and dynamite doppelgängers. That's right, Kung Fjune continues with the Hong Kong movie that kicked off the Girls with Guns genre: Corey Yuen's YES, MADAM! from 1985!It was the high-five heard around the world: Michelle Yeoh and Cynthia Rothrock's first starring roles. We're running down just how much these two women could kick one's ass, especially Rothrock's Grand Master status and how she was cooking fools even as a teenager, and take some time to shout out our numerous cameo-filled trios of doofuses.Plus, Nick connects the threads from last episode's Shaw talk on our 36th Chamber episode to YES, MADAM!'s contemporary setting. This movie kicked off a lot of careers, many of which guided the action genre through the next few decades and we're here to celebrate that.Next time we're heading to the 90's for a different side of Hong Kong film: Wong Kar-wei's CHUNGKING EXPRESS!
This episode was originally released May 17, 2021 This week we discuss the Wong Kar-Wai classic Chungking Express, the changing face of Hong Kong, stillness and transience, quirkiness and metaphor, and what a romantic comedy should be. Chungking Express is a 1994 Hong Kong romantic crime comedy-drama film written and directed by Wong Kar-wai. The film consists of two stories told in sequence, each about a lovesick Hong Kong policeman mulling over his relationship with a woman. The first story stars Takeshi Kaneshiro as a cop obsessed with his breakup with a woman named May, and his encounter with a mysterious drug smuggler (Brigitte Lin). The second stars Tony Leung as a police officer roused from his gloom over the loss of his flight attendant girlfriend (Valerie Chow) by the attentions of a quirky snack bar worker (Faye Wong). "Chungking" in the title refers to Chungking Mansions in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong, where Wong grew up in the 1960s. "Express" refers to the food stand Midnight Express, located in Lan Kwai Fong, an area in Central, Hong Kong. I Love This You Should Too is hosted by Samantha & Indy Randhawa

Directed by the acclaimed figure of the Hong Kong film industry, Wong Kar-wai, the series has rekindled memories of a time when the wheel of fortune could be turned around with a blend of luck, connections, and sheer hard work. Fans have been thronging to the shooting locations, and it is not just accommodation, food and tourist businesses that have piggy-backed on the success of the series.
Blossoms Shanghai is Wong Kar-wai's first dive into dramatic TV series production.• It's viral:爆火 • Blossoms Shanghai:《繁花》 • Wong Kar-wai:王家卫• first dive:第一次潜水(首度尝试)王家卫出生于上海:Shanghai is his birthplace. It's an homage to his birthplace Shanghai.• birthplace: It has received mixed reviews. Keep your heart warm but your head cool. The Miss Wang on the 27th" and "Miss Wang" are two different matters.27号,是汪小姐之前所在的外贸公司,是个大平台。 (No one is buying what she's selling),尝尽世态炎凉。 排骨年糕的套餐(the combo) 有个好价格, the combo comes with a good price,但并不代表the rice cake is worth the same。 A man should have 3 wallets, the first one is how much cash you actually have;the second one is your credit; how much you can leverage from what's in others' wallets;the third one is how much others think you have.” Who's got time for all this real or fake drama? What's in front of your eyes is real; what's walked away is fake. Who's got time for all this real or fake drama? Who's got time for all this drama The goal has never been too far away, step by step, day by day. Just give it your all, and leave the rest to time. step by step一步步, day by day一天天, 全力以赴。6. In a team, some focus on their own steps, while others keep an eye on the road ahead. 所以, while in a team, you need to fit-in。 When it comes to relationships, everyone talks like they're experts. But in reality, we're all just rookies. Repeating the same mistakes, never graduating from the school of love. It's like holding a torch, walking against the wind. In business, you gotta learn two words: hush-hush.有人说:真正想做的事,连神明都不要说(for real goals, don't even mention them to the gods.) Just go do your thing quietly,,成功了再说and when you've nailed it, then you can talk about it. The convincing stuff is never the logic, it's always the hard reality.• logic: 逻辑,道理 • convincing:有说服力的 • the hard reality: 残酷的现实(南墙)所以,放下劝人情结,尊重他人命运。10. Everyone's got a scale in their heart–knowing when to share the good times, when to weather the storms. It's all pretty clear to them.
Γιατί ανυπομονούμε για νέο Λάνθιμο ενώ καλά-καλά δεν βγήκε ακόμα το Poor Things στις αίθουσες; Πώς θα είναι η Angelina Jolie ως Maria Callas; Πόσο καλύτερη μπορεί να είναι η δεύτερη σεζόν του House of the Dragon από την πρώτη; Τι θα μας φέρει το νέο True Detective; Τι rom-com σκαρώνει η δημιουργός του Past Lives; Τι δουλειά έχει ο Josh O'Connor του The Crown να ψαχουλεύει τάφους στην ιταλική επαρχία; Τι θα είναι η επανένωση Rooney Mara και Joaquin “Γιοακίν” Phoenix στη μεγάλη οθόνη; Πώς να πούμε όχι σε μια σειρά με πρωταγωνιστή τον Colin Farrell ως Πιγκουίνο, και πώς να πούμε όχι σε μια σειρά με πρωταγωνιστή τον Peter “Doctor Who” Capaldi ως κατσούφη ερευνητή; Τι μαγειρεύει ο Park Chan-wook για την επιστροφή του στη μικρή οθόνη με πρωταγωνιστή τον Robert Downey Junior; Και πότε θα πιστέψουμε ότι είναι όντως αληθινή η επιστροφή στη σκηνοθεσία του θρύλου Wong Kar-wai; Αυτά και άλλα πολλά (πολλά!)

If you like what you hear, and/or would like to give us feedback on how we're doing, follow us at: https://beacons.ai/senornerdpodcast / senornerdpodcast @senornerdpod on Twitter Everything Everywhere All at Once is a 2022 American absurdist science-fiction comedy-drama film written and directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, who produced it with Anthony and Joe Russo and Jonathan Wang; the film incorporates elements from a number of genres and film mediums, including surreal comedy, science fiction, fantasy, martial arts films, immigrant narrative, and animation. Michelle Yeoh stars as Evelyn Quan Wang, a Chinese-American immigrant who, while audited by the IRS, discovers that she must connect with parallel universe versions of herself to prevent a powerful being from destroying the multiverse. The film also stars Stephanie Hsu, Ke Huy Quan, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jenny Slate, Harry Shum Jr., and James Hong in supporting roles. Kwan and Scheinert began work on the project in 2010. Production was announced in 2018, and principal photography ran from January to March 2020. The filmmakers initially sought Jackie Chan for the lead role before the script was revised to feature a female protagonist as part of a wife-husband duo. The works of Hong Kong film director Wong Kar-wai, as well as the children's book Sylvester and the Magic Pebble and the video game Everything, served as inspiration for several scenes. The soundtrack features compositions by Son Lux, including collaborations with Mitski, David Byrne, André 3000, John Hampson, and Randy Newman. The film explores philosophical themes such as existentialism, nihilism, surrealism, and absurdism, as well as themes such as neurodivergence, depr2ession, generational trauma, and Asian American identity. Everything Everywhere All at Once premiered at South by Southwest on March 11, 2022, and began a limited theatrical release in the United States on March 25, 2022, before a wide release by A24 on April 8. The film grossed over $141 million worldwide, becoming A24's highest-grossing film. It garnered widespread critical acclaim, gained a large cult following, and was a success at the 95th Academy Awards, winning a leading seven awards out of eleven nominations: Best Picture, Best Actress for Yeoh, Best Supporting Actor for Quan, Best Supporting Actress for Curtis, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for Kwan and Scheinert, and Best Film Editing. It also won two Golden Globe Awards, five Critics' Choice Awards (including Best Picture), a BAFTA Award, a record four SAG Awards (including Best Ensemble), a record seven Independent Spirit Awards (including Best Feature), and swept the four major guild awards (DGA, PGA, SAG, and WGA). With 266 awards out of 405 nominations, Everything Everywhere All at Once is currently estimated to be the most awarded film of all time.
On the fiftieth (!) official episode of the Cinematic Odyssey, Tristen and Max revisit Wong Kar-wai for the second time on the podcast, for In the Mood for Love, what many consider to be his masterpiece. Tristen rationalizes his lack of understanding of the piece and Max gets real for a moment while referencing musicals and more. Tristen makes a brilliant observation about cameras and there's more than one discussion about the soundtrack taking place! Plus, a fun game for the loyal listener with the opportunity to choose how the podcast plays out!
