Today's woman was raised in a wealthy isolated environment and was the youngest of 8 children. She was an exceptional athlete and sometimes felt she was different than others.  She was driven and inspirational but yet had very limited social life. As a young adult in college, she decided she wanted to be a motivational speaker.  It wasn't a direct path for her to get there though. She worked at a crisis center and for a seminar company. And eventually she went out on her own and got her first gig as a speaker. Years later she has become one of the few speakers to be honored in the Speaker Hall of Fame. Today she walks a path to greatness as she motivates audiences to get out of their comfort zone and take a front seat in life. It is my pleasure to introduce you to Marilyn Sherman.

Today, I want to talk to you about the value of going deep, not wide in your speaking business, one of the challenges that we can sometimes find is even after you've identified that topic that you want to become known for as a speaker, is that it can sometimes feel so overwhelming or the opportunities out there, we can get hit with what we call a Paradox of Choice. So something I learned from speakers like Marilyn Sherman, and Bill Cate's was not only did they choose their topic, but they chose an industry or few industries that they were really going to go deep on. So let me tell you how this can work for you. The first thing I would suggest is have a look at your topic and think about what is that first industry that you're going to go to with it could be an industry, you know a lot about perhaps your work in this particular industry, you already know the associations, you know, the companies, you know what the challenges are going on in that industry, that's an obvious first one to go for. So really stop pitching yourself to companies and associations in the industry around your top. But then I'd like to choose two other industries, one or the industry, have a look at your competitors. and see which industries they're speaking to what you might find from that is this is this an industry that has a real need for your child, your your topic at this stage right now. But a third industry you might want to look at is an industry that you think is going to have a real need for your topic and your expertise in a period of one to three years. So it's not like an immediate, it's not the thing that they're looking for right now. But you sense that it's going to just the flow of things, you're going to need your expertise speakers coming in on your topic to speak about. So once you identify those three industries, it's about going deep, you're going to research the associations, you're going to research the companies, and you're going to start pitching yourself to them. Now one of the benefits from doing this by going very deep in a small number of industries, is you become known as the go to Speaker not just on your topic, but on your topic and how it relates to that industry. This will put you in a class above many other speakers. So that's my topic for today. Go deep, not wide, and you're speaking. My name is James Taylor. Thanks for watching. #SpeakersLife #ProfessionalSpeaking

Fear is the number one block to success- the fear of inadequacy, uncertainty, failure, rejection, missing out, change, losing control, being judged, and others. Author and blogger Adam Kirk Smith wrote his first book, The Bravest You, about it, feeling that it needed to be first because so many people deal with it. Become your bravest you as Adam shares how you can fight fear and live a successful life. If life were a venue, where would you sit? Unfortunately, a lot of people settle for general admission seats when they could be giving themselves permission to move to the front because the view is so much better. Author and keynote speaker Marilyn Sherman says general admission is where most people are, in their comfort zone. They live and operate their lives without stretching themselves. The biggest obstacle that prevents people from living their life in the front row is fear. Marilyn shares how you can overcome those obstacles and move your chair closer to the front row of life. Marilyn Sherman is a speaker and author who has spent years motivating and inspiring audiences to get out of their comfort zone and get a front-row seat in life, and this is the perfect time of the year to check in with her because she has tips and techniques anyone can use to stay focused on their goals (and New Year’s resolutions).   It’s the end of January, so some of you may have broken your resolutions already – and that’s okay! Listen to the entire episode, apply Marilyn’s tips, and then you’ll be able to resurrect those resolutions for the remainder of the year.   If you want to do a little extra homework and really blow your goals away, you should check out Marilyn’s new book: Is There a Hole in Your Bucket List? How to Overcome Obstacles That Keep You from Achieving Your Goals. (Plus, if you order it through her website and mention the podcast, you will get a free book on wine from Marilyn’s husband!)   Marilyn wrote this book because even successful people tend to sabotage their own success, in some area of their life. However, we can patch up those holes in our bucket list (or our resolutions) with Marilyn’s tips and techniques.   (Some of) Marilyn’s Tips & Techniques for Achieving Your Goals:   Marilyn suggests creating a bucket list, if you don’t have one already, because it represents your hope for the future; it’s a glorified list of goals. Then, if there is one recurring thing that you can’t cross off of your list, you have identified a hole to fill.   Be more vulnerable. When you admit that you are struggling (possibly with shame or fear), you will find that you are not alone. “When you expose light to whatever it is that has been holding you back, that’s taking your power back – and that’s the first step to patching up these holes that are preventing you from success.”   Everyone needs an “Anger Buddy” and an “Anger Sack.” Everyone has a bad day sometimes, but unfortunately we can end up blowing up or snapping at someone who doesn’t deserve it due to the accumulation of many smaller things over time (which is unproductive). You can avoid this ever happening again if you envision an anger sack that fills up when negative things happen. When you feel that it is full, have a chat with your anger buddy, often a significant other, who you have trained to let you vent; you don’t need to add solutions to an overflowing anger sack.     Resources: Learn more at MarilynSherman.com Connect with Marilyn: Facebook | Twitter | LinkedIn Read: Is There a Hole in Your Bucket List? It wasn't for a teacher's strike, Marilyn Sherman might have had a different career path. In Part 1 of our chat with the Media Director of Twenty6Two International, we hear about how she 'tripped' (her words) into media while still in high school, learn about her days at Saffer, Cravit, and Freedman- where she served as planner and buyer on many big retail accounts like Towers department stores and Bata Shoes, and learn how the entrepreneurial culture of that agency challenged planners and buyers to rethink how they did business.
