We have been wanting to have Alisa Petrova on the show for a while now with us first reaching out to her back in December 2022 to talk about the Spartan World Championships that year! Her being 9 hours ahead of us made it pretty difficult to plan a good time to record but it was worth recording at 5am our time to finally have her on the show! Alisa talks about how she wasn't medically allowed to engage in sports at a young age but eventually got into speed walking and later became involved with Hero Race. In more recent years she has continued to prove herself to be a podium threat at many championship events including the Spartan World Championships. Within the past month she took on a new challenge in the form of an ultra by competing and winning Tough Mudder Infinity in AlUla. We discuss the barriers of fueling, pacing, and dealing with poor race day communications at the event. We were planning for this and next episode to be on Deka World Championships but unfortunately there were a trifecta of reasons that stopped us from being in Atlantic City to cover it live! Instead, we plan to have two episodes on World's Toughest Mudder (released earlier than planned). For this episode we have Tyler Veerman and DJ Fox! Tyler is no stranger to ultra endurance OCR as he did really well in Telluride last year for the Spartan Ultra World Championships. WTM is very different than a Spartan event though, less burpees but much more water! We talk about his experience at the race, his decision to stop after 100 miles, and him comparing the experience to Telluride last year! DJ came on the scene hot at last year's WTM and secured a podium position of third place! He has since dedicated even more time and effort into this event and has been training at the Ultra House with Anthony Kunkel. The 24 Hour World's Toughest Mudder is one of the most prestigious and grueling obstacle course races on earth. This week elite OCR athlete and coach Mark Batres joins me to talk all about training in the off-season: the dos, the don'ts, and how to train to improve your performance for the next year. We start with Mark telling me about his OCR season went, and then he tells me all about the recent Spartan combine held in Laughlin. I also ask him if he's planning on running one of the new Spartan Trail races, and we chat a bit about that. Mark then tells me more about his coaching business, and how and why he got started. We then talk about the off-season, and Mark explains why it's not good to take an excessive amount of time off. He tells me about building a base, and discusses the best ways to use the off-season to improve your OCR performance. I ask him about plateaus in training, and Mark tells me how they happen, and the best advice for pushing past them. We then discuss finding a balance between overtraining and not training enough, and I ask him what some of the biggest mistakes are that people make in the off-season. We end by talking a bit about the Spartan U.S. Championship series next year, and Mark's goals for 2019.

In every Spartan Race, Tough Mudder or any obstacle course race, there are always a few guys who I would consider “the rabbits”. They bring blinding speed to the competition. Sometimes it's just the ticket, other times the carries and strength work can toss a wrench into best laid plan. Mark Batres is a threat at any race he appears, with a 5K PR of 14:27 and he has been working hard to even the score when it comes to the bag and bucket carries. In the episode we talk to husband and wife team Mark Batres and Natalie Miano about how they manage their family of 4, work and personal life while consistently standing atop the podium.
