When Hawk Call started getting into some big Spartan Races a few years ago it got a lot of us who have been in the sport for a long time pretty excited! This is because many of us remember his father Hobie who is almost always in the conversation of who historically is one of the best men in the sport of OCR. Hawk is his own own athlete though, and I didn't want to have him on the show just to talk about his dad. It didn't take long for him to start to make a name for himself though, and it quickly became more of an issue of having an open weekend for the show and have him on for his own episode. Following his recent win at the Spartan US National Series Race in Big Bear we realized that we had a couple weeks where we could be flexible with episode content so Mike reached out to schedule an interview! We discuss what it was like growing up in the sport, his style of training and racinging, his thoughts on the 3K format, how his recent Spartan Big Bear race went, nutrition, his preperation for the upcoming Broken Arrow Skyrace, where his athletic focus is, and much more! 0:00 – 3:44 – Intro 3:44 – 9:50 – Quick News 9:50 – 10:26 – Content Preface 10:26 - 1:04:00 - Hawk Call Interview 1:04:00 - End – Outro Next weekend we plan to finally have one of our favorite Danes on the show for his own episode! ____ News Stories: Monica Ibizu's Dad Elliot Rueb's Puppy Massachusetts Ice Cream Trail Ulrikke Evensen Injury Ultimate OCR Swedish Championship Podiums Toughest Mudder Philadelphia Podiums Toughest Molmo Podiums Starbucks Murmaid Secret Link Baseball Date Secret Link Hate Job Secret Link We're Powerlifters Secret Link Airport Speed Secret Link ____ Related Episodes: The Running Public's Episode #77: Hawk Call ____ The OCR Report Patreon Supporters: Jason Dupree, Kim DeVoss, Samantha Thompson, Matt Puntin, Brad Kiehl, Charlotte Engelman, Erin Grindstaff, Hank Stefano, Arlene Stefano, Laura Ritter, Steven Ritter, Sofia Harnedy, Kenny West, Cheryl Miller, Jessica Johnson, Scott "The Fayne" Knowles, Anna Landry, Nick Ryker, Christopher Hoover, Kevin Gregory Jr., Evan Eirich, Ashley Reis, Brent George, Justin Manning, Wendell Lagosh, Logan Nagle, Angela Bowers, Asa Coddington, Thomas Petersen, Seth Rinderknecht, and Bonnie Wilson. Photo by Kenny Hunter It's been a long time coming, this podcast featuring my good friend Martin Murray, who had spent a few weeks in the US for DIRTYFEST and the Sea Otter Classic in Monterey. We recorded this episode at Robbie Miranda's house in Huntington Beach while Robbie was hosting a BBQ, so expect a few guests chiming in with questions for Martin during the podcast. We delved into Martin's early days in the UK, including his 4th place finish at the Brighton World Championships in 1996 in the Junior category, which kickstarted his pro career alongside his brother Stephen. Martin shared insights from his time in the US, including his battle with Dylan Clayton for the UK Pro/Elite title, winning the 4x National Series, and landing a Dirt Magazine cover with Steve Peat, who he now works with at Peaty's. We also discussed some of the UK teams Martin and Stephen's family managed over the years, his time at 6th form college with Scott Beaumont, Martin's win at King of Dirt at the age of 13, trail riding, participation in Red Bull's Empire of Dirt, retirement from racing, and more about his current role at Peaty's. And, of course, we touched on how Martin's brother Stephen is doing these days since moving back to the UK after his injury almost 20 years ago, and more.
This year, the National series has undergone some significant changes. If you're not up to date, don't worry - we'll break down all the changes and show you how to save some money. Let us know how many nationals you're planning to attend this year.

These awesome brands make The B Practice Podcast possible!Maxxis | Burgtec | Industry NineThe leaves are falling, debates surrounding Rampage results are smoldering, and speculation about who is riding for what team fills the forums; it must be the off-season! Between Tanner shooting feature films, Dakotah building furniture, and myself making editorial plans for 2024, we found some time to record a fresh podcast riffing about bikes and racing. With the 2024 UCI Schedule just released, we discuss the cause and effects of a mostly European-based series and the complications of having a U.S.-based World Cup or National Series. We also chat about what trail bike I should get next (open to recommendations in the comments), touch on some team rumors, debate if bikes should be designed for the world's fastest racers or the average rider, Dakotah's contracts, and the importance of ex-racers being involved with brands and bike development. Enjoy!

God lyttings!Support the show

Tyler Veerman is one of the best racers OCR has seen over the past 5 years. He has multiple National Series podium finishes and a silver at the 2021 Ultra World Championships. In the episode we talk about directing his first race, the difference between mountain running and OCR, and 2022 Ultra Champs prep.
We talk about the Spartan Age Group National series. We touch on the top three in each category, what we like about the series, and how we feel it could be improved.
Camping World Truck Series rookie Dean Thompson joins Davey Segal (7:15) to discuss how his first season in NASCAR's National Series is going, how the opportunity with Niece Motorsports came about in the first place and why Carson Hocevar was a major help throughout the process. Thompson dives into his start in racing as a kid before choosing to play hockey over motorsports. He explains why he made that choice and his years as a goalie before eventually coming back to motorsports thanks to Cole Custer inviting him to Auto Club Speedway for a race weekend. After tearing up the local racing scene in California winning multiple track championships at Irwindale Speedway, Thompson went ARCA racing. The next logical step? The Camping World Truck Series. Thompson also gets real about the importance of enjoying racing and not making it purely a job, how he handles those thinking he got to where he is purely based off family money, how he felt racing in his first ever Truck race and more, including forgetting his hard card, his passion for fishing (but getting out-fished by his girlfriend), losing his sunglasses on the water and his goals for the remainder of the 2022 season. Davey discusses Kurt Busch's Kansas Speedway triumph and the career arc of the future Hall of Famer, explains why the All-Star Race isn't doing it for him anymore and Papa Segal pays homage to some guy who made the No. 48 iconic.

Endurance News: The Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO) today announced that its Professional Athlete Board has unanimously voted to reduce the age group registration pricing in its inaugural PTO Tour. Having announced the three-part race series in early January, the PTO's commercial team received immediate feedback from the PTO Professionals that the pricing of the events did not align to its goal of growing the sport. The PTO Tour events are owned by the PTO Professionals and as such, the professionals are the hosts and age group athletes are their invited guests. Apologising to the age group community and to PTO Professionals for the error, the PTO's CEO Sam Renouf said: “We are excited to add age group racing to the PTO Tour this year. This will allow fans to not only watch the greatest athletes on the planet – but to step up and challenge themselves in competing at the very same event. In planning this, we looked at other bucket list events, including world championship triathlons and the major marathons. With closed road courses, grandstand seating, the chance to get closer to pro athletes, ancillary events for friends and family to enjoy and unmatched event merchandise, our goal is to create unforgettable VIP moments for every age-grouper. “Having often shared the concern that age group pricing is too high, we initially priced our events lower than the championship events we took inspiration from, with the aim of making the sport more accessible. We also sought to remove the pain points in such races, such as mandatory extra fees and continual upselling for items we feel should be all-inclusive." “We apologise for not recognising this at the outset and hope that the triathlon community can forgive the error. We are grateful for the structure of the PTO, which provides the chance for the immediate feedback of the PTO Professionals when we've misstepped. Following a unanimous vote from the PTO Athlete Board, we have subsequently reduced all age group pricing by 50% and will automatically issue a refund to all existing entrants to reflect this.” The inaugural PTO Tour consists of the PTO Canadian Open in Edmonton, Canada, on 23-24 July, The Collins Cup in Bratislava, Slovakia on 20-21 August and the PTO US Open in Dallas, Texas, on 17-18 September. The PTO Canadian and US Open will feature racing over the 100km and 25km distances and The Collins Cup over 100km where age group athletes will not only race their race, but also get a VIP experience to watch the greatest PTO professionals battle it out for the US$1,000,000+ prize purse. There are eight events including Colorado's Stagecoach Gravel outside of Steamboat on July 31st put on by Without Limits Production. We will take a deeper dive into the vision Lance Panigutti of Without Limits has with his event, but he had this to say about being part of the series. “The Stagecoach Gravel Triathlon couldn't be more excited to join the fold, as it provides a level of exposure and legitimacy to the endeavor, but the governing structure doesn't restrict our ability to be creative. This will also be the first season USA Triathlon hosts its own national championship on June 3rd in Arkansas. Lance Panigutti—I want to amplify that mindset of “embracing the day”, appreciation for the natural environment, and creating experiences that ignite that childlike competitiveness we once felt playing capture the flag at recess. On this Episode, I bring Dustin Livengood on to talk about the 2022 Spartan Elite and National Series. We also talk about the Elite and Age Group divisions as a whole. We have some opinions about this topic that some may not share. I wanted to hear how Dustin felt about this topic since he and I raced Elite before there was Age Group division. We both raced Age Group when it started, and now he leans more to Elite, and I to Age Group. We talk about different mindsets on how to approach a race, or a race season ,and what may work best. Make sure you listen to the end to hear a very heartfelt answer to a question I asked him as well.

Palmwoods local and former Kawana High School graduate Taj Jones has become the first member of the Sunshine Coast based Australian Cycling Academy (ACA) to secure a contract with a World Tour Team. Jones has signed a three year contract with the Israel Start Up Nation World Tour team hot on the heels of multiple Tour de France winner Chris Froome. ACA Managing Director, Ben Kersten said he was thrilled for Jones who has showed significant improvement in his performances after taking up the sport four years ago and progressing to join the locally based ACA pro-racing team in early 2019. “Taj has shown a strong aptitude for hard work, determination and the willingness to learn since joining our team after winning the Queensland u23 Title and numerous National Series top 10’s in 2018. He should be congratulated for his achievement to be the first of our riders to go to what is essentially the highest level in our sport. “The ACA was created to ensure there was a pathway for developing young riders to turn professional and compete on the national and international stage. It’s certainly validation of our strong ‘Live, Learn and Ride philosophy which Taj has fully embraced and I am certain this is one of the factors which has impressed the powers behind the Israel Start Up Nation team. “We are very confident that Taj will be the first of many cyclists from the ACA team who will go on to compete at the highest level over the next few years,” Ben said. In February this year, Jones took out the biggest win of his young career by taking out stage two of the prestigious Tour de Langkawi in Malaysia ahead of World Tour Professional riders Max Walscheid (NTT Pro Cycling) and Jérémy Lecroq (B&B Hotels-Vital Concept). Ben Kersten said the win was Jones’ biggest of his career to date and was achieved without winning a domestic race. “Taj worked incredibly hard over summer and his training form was exceptional so we gave him the responsibility to be the team leader for the sprint stages at Langkawi and he rose to the occasion and repaid the faith we placed in him,” Ben said. Taj’s success in Langkawi saw his name propelled amongst international agents before teaming up with former champion racer and rider manager Baden Cooke who secured the contract with the Israel team. Taj said it felt surreal to be selected by the Israel Start Up National team following such a short stint with the ACA. “It’s incredible to think about where I have come from and where I am heading, to be a part of the same team as a legend like Chris Froome along with other world class riders is exciting and I can’t wait to see where I can take my career under the guidance of a World Tour Team. “I’m also really appreciative of the ACA team lead by Ben Kersten and Matt Wilson and all the support staff including Henk Vogels, Stu Shaw and USC based high performance manager Aaron Turner, their guidance and experience in the elite levels of cycling has certainly helped to fast track my progress. “They’ve made all the mistakes in the past so I don’t have to make them myself which certainly helps fast track my progress. The ACA pathway program is absolutely world class with a strong focus on the cyclists performance on and off the bike and I have no doubt that this philosophy will see other members of the team move to World Tour teams in the next few years,” Taj said. Sunshine Coast Economy Portfolio Councillor Jason O’Pray said, as a principal partner of the Australian Cycling Academy, Sunshine Coast Council is delighted to see a Palmwoods local signed with a World Tour Team. “We congratulate Taj on this outstanding achievement and are delighted to have the Sunshine Coast represented in an international sporting team,” Cr O’Pray said. “His bright future and ongoing success will only further bolster the Australian Cycling Academy’s international reputation, and in turn, the status of the Sunshine Coast as a premier location for High Performance Sport. “This is a terrific opportunity for Taj and on behalf of council we wish him every success,” Cr O’Pray said. USC Director, High Performance Sport, Dr Brendan Burkett said the exciting news that Taj has secured a contract with a World Tour Team is another success story for the locally based Australian Cycling Academy. “The ACA have created the ideal training environment for an athlete to reach their potential in the sport of cycling. A key part of the athlete’s success is getting the balance right between sport and life outside of sport and their partnership with the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) ensures there is a strong commitment to continually create the optimal environment both on and off the bike,” Dr Burkett said. Edward Federman, ARA Executive Chair and Managing Director said the ARA Group is extremely pleased for Taj’s contract signing with the Israel Start Up National team within their first year as naming sponsor of ARA Pro Racing. “We continue to be impressed with the evolution of the team and their management. The ARA Group looks forward to the future success of Taj and many more team athletes in the years ahead,” Mr Federman said. Zak Dempster, Israel Cycling Academy Sport Director, who recommended Taj to the team said: “Taj came to our attention after winning a stage in Langkawi and getting a podium against solid pros. He's a young guy who last year was not quite ready, but used his time effectively to prepare before taking advantage of his first chance to win a high level sprint. After that win he went straight back to work and his progress during the COVID situation is really exciting,” Taj said he expects to join his Israel Start Up teammates later this year at their base in Girona, Spain.

Spartan's VP of Product David Watson joins me on the podcast this week to discuss all the changes Spartan made to their championship qualification system, and their championship weekend, and why they decided to make them. We start with some clarifying questions about the qualification system and the roll-down weeks that follow the last U.S. National Series race and the North American Championship in West Virginia. Then we dive into the why: I ask David why Spartan decided to change the the qualification system to only 6 races in the season and if they took into account those racers that might find it especially difficult to qualify for the World Championships because of that. That leads us into an interesting discussion about raising the standards of championships and legitimizing the sport. I ask David at what point Spartan will give more spots to international competitors, and we discuss the international competition. We then talk all about the new format of the Spartan World Championship weekend, and I dive into all the questions I have about Sunday: why they cut the open wave, whether they think it's realistic racers will stick around to spectate on Sunday, and what the competition will look like. After talking about the championships, I ask David about the new obstacles Spartan will be debuting this year which leads us into a discussion about obstacle standardization between the race formats, and further into distance standardization as well. And lastly, I ask the question that's on everyone's mind: will the Spartan World Championships ever leave Tahoe?
