With a career spanning over three decades, Michael has made a profound impact on the field of printmaking through his own practice as well as his work as a mentor, collaborator and educator.Michael is best known as the founder and director of Cicada Press, an educationally focused printmaking workshop based at UNSW Art and Design. Through Cicada Press, he has collaborated with hundreds of artists from Australia and overseas, fostering experimentation and innovation in print. The workshop has become a vital space where emerging and established artists can expand their practices, with Michael guiding technical expertise while encouraging creative risk taking.Alongside this collaborative work, Michael has dedicated much of his career to teaching. He was a senior lecturer at UNSW and has mentored countless students, many of whom have gone on to develop successful artistic practices of their own. His approach emphasises the importance of both technical mastery and the spirit of collaboration, showing how printmaking can open up new conversations across disciplines and cultures.Beyond his role as a master printer and teacher, Michael maintains a personal art practice that reflects his own visual language and concerns. After sharing a few drinks together at several different bars around the centre of the city of Auckland, 21 year old British Backpacker Grace Millane and 26 year old New Zealand Native Jesse Kempson - who appeared to be enjoying one another's company - make their way back to Kempson's apartment at the CityLife Hotel. In December 2018, Grace Millane, a 22-year-old British backpacker, was tragically murdered while traveling in New Zealand. Her disappearance on the night of her birthday prompted an intense police investigation that led to the arrest of Jesse Kempson, who she had met on a dating app. The chilling details of her final hours revealed that she was strangled to death in Kempson's apartment, and her body was later found buried in a suitcase in a remote area. Kempson's trial exposed his deceitful and manipulative behavior, resulting in his conviction and a life sentence. ContemporaryPerformance.com and the Sarah Lawrence College MFA Theatre Program produce the SLC Performance Lab. During the year, visiting artists to the MFA Theatre Program's Performance Lab are interviewed after leading a workshop with the students. Performance Lab is one of the program's core components, where graduate students work with guest artists and develop performance experiments. Sibyl Kempson is interviewed and produced by Julia Duffy (SLC'25) Kempson's plays have been presented in the United States, Germany, and Norway. As a performer she toured internationally from 2000-2011 with Nature Theater of Oklahoma, New York City Players, and Elevator Repair Service. Her own work has received support from the Jerome Foundation, the Greenwall Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, and Dixon Place. She was given four Mondo Cane! commissions from 2002-2011 for The Wytche of Problymm Plantation, Crime or Emergency, Potatoes of August, and The Secret Death of Puppets). She received an MAP Fund grant for her collaboration with Elevator Repair Service (Fondly, Collette Richland) at New York Theatre Workshop (NYTW), a 2018 PEN/Laura Pels International Foundation for Theater Award for American Playwright at Mid-Career (specifically honoring “her fine craft, intertextual approach, and her body of work, including Crime or Emergency and Let Us Now Praise Susan Sontag”), and a 2014 USA Artists Rockefeller fellowship with NYTW and director Sarah Benson. Hot off the OCRWC podium in 2022, Kempson hit 2023 running with multiple wins in the Savage Pro series. He joins us to talk about his year so far, the current landscape of OCR, and what he hopes to see for the future.

Naedele share the theory behind the games, the savage thought-process they took to design the events and why camaraderie is fostered through military-inspired training and a few fist bumps. In the second part, 2023 Champions Carly Wopat and Matt Kempson shut down the games as they recap their personal journeys that included a 100 lb ruck run, false finishes, knot tying, hand-to-hand combat, and moving 3000 lbs of sandbags. Carly shares her career as a professional beach volleyball player and a firefighter, while Matt explains how building the foundation to his house was the key to winning the final event. On December 2, 2018, the parents of twenty-one-year-old Grace Millane, a British tourist on vacation in New Zealand, became concerned when the birthday wishes they sent their daughter went unacknowledged. Having completed her degree at the University of Lincoln a few months earlier, Grace had spent several weeks traveling during her gap year but had been keeping in regular contact with her parents since leaving for her trip. When they still hadn't heard from their daughter three days later, Grace's parents called Auckland police and reported her missing. A week later, Grace Millane's body was discovered in a suitcase near an access road in the Waitakere Ranges, a dense wooded area about twelve miles outside Auckland. Matt Kempson, also known as Rocky Mountain Kempson, is a seasoned athlete with a career spanning over nine years in the obstacle course racing world. He has competed in a variety of events such as mud runs, TMX, tactical games, and HYROX, among others.Kempson started his athletic career in 2013 with obstacle course racing and quickly became one of the top competitors in the sport. Over the years, he has evolved and shifted his focus to different events that have piqued his interest. In 2013, he was fully invested in the mud run game and lived in Durango, Colorado. However, in the following years, he moved on to the more strength-oriented events such as TMX and HYROX.Two years ago, Kempson was introduced to tactical games by Rob Killian and was immediately drawn to the event due to its shooting component. He threw all his chips in and dedicated a season to competing in tactical games, which he found to be an incredible experience. However, due to some personal turmoil, he had to take a break from competing for a year and focus on fixing up his house.When asked about the fittest version of himself throughout his athletic career, Kempson said that it would depend on the day. But if he had to choose one, he would pick his time competing in TMX. He said that the training style for TMX was the best balance of heavy lifting and running, and he felt strong, fast, and well-rounded during that time.When Kempson was asked about what he thinks he will do when he retires, he said that he doesn't think he will ever be able to give up competing. He believes that competition is in his blood and he can never completely stop competing in one form or another. However, he acknowledges that he needs to be smarter about the events he picks, and he will never do an Iron Man.In conclusion, Matt Kempson is a highly experienced athlete with a rich and diverse history in the obstacle course racing world. He has competed in a variety of events and has found success in each one. Matt Kempson - Tactical Game Athlete, Professional Obstacle Course Racer, HYROX Athlete and Fitness Equipment Designer. Matt Originally migrating to Colorado in search of big mountain skiing, inadvertently developed an endurance background that he began to utilize in the athletic world. After years of professional obstacle course racing he has now shifted his focus on a new hybrid-style event called The Tactical Games. It's a civilian event that mixes shooting proficiency with strongman and endurance challenges where Matt finds himself competing against some of the toughest and fittest special forces and special police units in the US.
