Before getting into the running, I was actually a SMOKER who couldn't even run down the block. I used to hold onto the belief that marathons and races in general were for people who were not like me. I genuinely didn't know that it was physically possible for me to build up to be able to run long distances let alone a FULL MARATHON. Now I have 27 marathons under my belt and have helped thousands of people go from beginner runners to marathon finishers. In this episode we are going to talk about what it takes to build up to a marathon and how to do it safely so that you can continue to run for a lifetime and not just be a ‘one and done'. Marathoning maybe USED to be just for elite, but with the recent running BOOM we are starting to see that normal every day people with no experience can achieve amazing things and build up to a marathon. If your goal was to run a marathon in the next 6-9 months and you had NEVER done a run before, where should you start? Start with walking Run/Walk intervals every other day Start with 10-20 min and build up Cut back weeks every 2-3 weeks Find a half marathon half way through the training Join a a group or find someone/something to be apart of community is everything Don't worry about workouts- go at a zone 2 pace How do you know if you are running the correct pace? Zone 2 is going to be the safest place to be- grab a HR monitor and 60-70% of your max HR Another way to do this is think of a pace that you are not needing to take breaks from- should feel super easy. Breathing is light Your long run pace should be the same as your easy run pace How to build the long run You have to have increase long runs to be able to finish a marathon Old rules state to not have a long run be more than 30% of your weekly mileage, but these rules may not apply if you are newer to the sport and just can't run high mileage yet. - to balance out the fact that it is risky to have such a long run relative to weekly mileage (ie a 12 mile long run when you only run 20 miles a week) we will want to keep these long runs extremely slow. Confidence is key Everyone is nervous about the marathon distance I've done 27 marathons and still freak out about long runs It's good to find something to distract yourself and remain calm in the early miles FUELING! This is no joke. You can get ‘away' with faster on shorter runs but when you make the jump to doing 60-90 min runs, it's going to hit different. Fueling is EVERYTHING Eat a carb rich breakfast Take 60 grams of carbs PER HOUR minimum. Aim for 1000mg of sodium PER HOUR Train the way you plan to race Don't ruin your race by putting too much time goal pressure It's fun to push yourself but it's not fun to overshoot your capabilities and end of hitting the wall.
Time to Challenge Yourself As 2024 fades away and 2025 takes control let's take time to look back and reflect on the ups and downs of the past year. We all have had those moments we achieved some sort of milestone, we have also had those moments we never want to relive. I'm hopeful that you had some time at the end of last year and the first week of this year to relax, reflect, and refresh yourself. I hope you have gotten into a place where you are ready to rise up again, and accomplish your goals. As much as I am NOT a fan of New Year's resolutions, for the fact that the name in of itself let's people know that it'll be a bust by February, I AM a fan of creating a new plan, schedule, and goals to work on THROUGHOUT the year ahead. I like the feel of starting over, having a second chance, learning about myself and reaching goals. I love the promise of a new tomorrow, where anything is possible, but without a goal or plan of attack days can roll by into weeks and month, only to leave you feeling like you let yourself down once again. This year, I want to challenge you to several new things. First you need to stay positive. Easier said than done, I know, but if you know that hard times will come-that there will be some struggles in your journey, then you can plan for that. While you're in a good place prepare for the "suck". How will you handle phantom pains when they hit? How will you decide when you need to talk with your prosthetist about your fit? When do you change your doctor after everything else has failed and you feel in your gut that you need someone else's help or opinion? These are all things that can knock the wind out of you and set you back. For some of us it can derail us so badly that we loose our momentum and never get it back, we can get lost in a dark place. Prepare! Make a Plan! Execute that plan TODAY!!! I am not immuned to this "delay game". I play it with myself when I'm too tired, too happy, too busy...."I'll start tomorrow". You know that game, right? I'm preaching to myself when I say we need to stop that if we want to achieve, overcome, rise up and become the warriors we were born to be. This is our year! We will do this together. Accountability is key when you are struggling. This week I have 2 Call to Actions for you. Don't ignore these, let's get after it together. I can hold you accountable, and you can hold me accountable. First, come up with your word or phase of the year. Something that will keep you focused on your ultimate goal. Keep it short and simple 1-2 words if you can. This becomes your war cry, your mantra, something you will write and speak to yourself everyday for this whole year. What is your word or phrase? It could be: Control Be Present Rise Up Be Epic Breathe Walk Mine is: Charge Forward Second, join me in a virtual race. The one I have just registered for is called "Reset" by Virtual Pace Series and you can register here This is a choose your distance challenge. You can do a 5K, 10K, Half or Full Marathon. The beauty of this race is that you can do it on your time and in your location. You can choose your distance and how you complete it. Walk, Run, Hike, Bike, Swim, it doesn't matter. What matters is that you are challenging yourself WHER YOU ARE AT. If you can't do 5K in one event, then break it down into 2 or 3 days/events. If you have already completed a walking. 10K then maybe you need to try running a 5K or even a 10K. The point is to have something holding you accountable and a goal set before you. You do you, where You Are At in your journey. Earn that medal and when you open it, AFTER COMPLETION, you are going to fall in love with challenging yourself. Join me in 2025, a year in which you achieve your goals and realize the warrior within you is Stronger than you could ever have imagined! Yes you can! You will!

Today we discuss how much volume is needed for an athlete to run-walk a marathon, how we would train for life if races ceased to exist, what we would do if we had one year to become the biggest monster possible, and what to do if your half marathon time is disproportionate to your marathon time.

It's a little bit of a hodge-podge, but you're sure to find something helpful here if you're getting ready to tackle a half or a full for the very first time. As always, keep in mind I'm NOT a registered dietitian, a run coach, a professional athlete or an expert in anything...except my own experiences, which are what I share with you here. Did I forget something I should've talked about in this episode? Let me know by reaching out via email at funoftherunpodcast@gmail.com or DM me @waddellrunninglady on Instagram. Thanks for listening!

New runners always want to know exactly how much time they would need to devote to run training, if they decided to take on a half marathon or a full marathon. A new study has the answers, and the amount is less than you'd think. On the podcast, we discuss how much time and what that training time should look like (hint: it's not all long, steady running). And, if you're already using the MOTTIV training app, the study findings are already part of the training we offer! Heather has been an athlete for most of her life. She took her love of swimming and entered the triathlon world, eventually crushing Ironman. She eventually married her love of running and all things Disney and tackled a number of runDisney runs. This is where she met Jen. Jen began running during her weight loss journey half a dozen years ago. She previously only ran from base to base as a varsity softball player and loathed running. But thanks to her friends and a supportive network, she ran her first 5K. Heather and Jen met as Jen was training for her first half marathon and eventually her first full marathon thanks to Heather's encouragement. The two are now dear friends and share a coach/athlete relationship. This friendship and love for running comes through on their podcast. The Mettleset's bonus episodes, which complement our regular Monday interviews with athletes from the region, are out on Fridays. Our bonus episodes will bring to you a range of trending and topical discussions around sporting news, races and events, along with our co-founders Dawn and Afshan's own training and upcoming races. Can anyone do a marathon? What is the benefit of doing a mix of aerobic, tempo and recovery runs in the lead up to a marathon? Can you overeat during a run? Should you train through pain? What should you be doing a week before your marathon? What are the common mistakes new runners make and can avoid? In our second bonus episode of my road to the Beirut International Marathon series, I sit down with my endurance coach Rob Foster to answer these crucial questions, which can help you get started if you too are considering your first marathon. My takeaway is that when you set an intention, do the work and trust the process, whether you achieve that desired pace or personal best time on race day or not becomes irrelevant. The journey is what matters more. And, there's always the next one!For more running tips and pointers, follow Rob Foster on @re_foster .The Beirut International Marathon was established in 2003 by May El-Khalil, the founder and president of the Beirut Marathon Association. In this episode Holly and I are talking training plans. Well, first of all, we're talking about Holly's very big life decision, of which I will say no more – you'll just have to listen in to find out more. And *then* we're talking training plans and running diaries. We talk about how to manage your training and your own expectations when things go slightly off the rails, and we talk about some of the fundamental issues that can affect our running – in this instance, it's sleep. For those of us signed up to an autumn marathon we're staring the beginning of our training plans in the face – mine starts next week. And Holly's half marathon training starts just a few weeks further on. Both of us are equally nervous about this – and would love to hear from you if you're also starting your next training block too. We're all in this together, right? We talk about how to manage our training plans so that they work around us, rather than being slaves to them, and – just for Holly – I introduce the concept of a reward chart around her training plan, and I'm fully contemplating buying her some gold star stickers to get her started. We also have the pleasure of another embarrassing moment from lovely podder Louise who had an issue with her trousers which again I shall leave you to discover. Oh and there's yet ANOTHER big revelation from Holly at the end of the podcast – What pleasures await!LinksJoin our lovely Patreon gang! Then have a look at how dirt cheap it is to become a member of Women's Running PlusRun for an hour and we'll plant 60 trees. 60!Support the show

Last friday, on the eve of his tenth birthday, Wellingtons Spike Hayvice ran a full marathon on a 400 metre track (thats 105 laps). His mum, Fiona, is one of New Zealands best ultra marathon runners so he was in very capable hands to help him achieve his goal. I caught up with Spike straight after school on Monday (3 days after his marathon effort).

In this episode, Candace talks with guest Tony about the medical news that he and his partner received, himself requiring an open heart surgery, and his partner getting diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer's. He talks about making a counter-intuitive decision that went against what some research would suggest for patients with Early Onset Alzhemizers; instead, they retired, sold their home and became nomads running marathons and half marathons all around the world. Tony talks about what it was like to travel around the world running race after race in places like Madagascar, Bhutan and the Great Wall of China with nothing but a suitcase. The pandemic did not put a stop to their plan and they are still running around the world over 7 years later.Anthony L. Copeland-Parker was a professional pilot/manager for thirty-seven years, the last twenty-seven with United Parcel Service. His last job had him managing pilots and flying B757/767-type air-craft all over the world. When he retired, he began writing his blog, PlayHard-HaveFun.com. Since then, he and his partner Catherine have traveled to eighty-two different countries. They have run at least a half-marathon in thirty-five countries and on all seven continents. His book Running All over the World, adapted from a blog he wrote during their travels, is a nonfiction account of our five-plus years of flying, running, walking, sailing, and sightseeing from Atlanta to Antarctica and back again. Part travelogue and part medical memoir, it transports listeners to exotic places like Madagascar, Bhutan, and the Great Wall of China while at the same time offering a day-to-day look at what it means to have nothing but what's in your suitcase. It's also an offbeat love story, recounting the trials and tribulations of an ex-pilot with a passion for vistas and logistics and a woman so tough she walks a half-marathon in the Australian Outback mere weeks after breaking her ankle. During their years as nomads, they pushed their physical and mental limitations as often as they could - and finished every race hand in hand.Get a copy of Tony's book hereFollow Tony on FacebookFollow Tony on IGFollow Tony on TwitterFind Tony on Linkedin
