Four-star General Oleksandr Syrskyi has commanded the armed forces in Ukraine since February. Before that, he helmed his country's ground forces as Russia began its full-scale invasion in early 2022, when he led that initial battle for Kyiv and pushed Moscow's forces out of the capital. Since his elevation to the top of the military seven months ago, there have been a series of strategic challenges and victories for Ukraine. Among them, the surprise assault on the Russian region of Kursk, and the current fears that the key city of Pokrovsk could fall imminently. Oregon’s Bottle Bill, which offers cash refunds for empty bottles and cans, was a landmark piece of legislation when it first passed in 1971. Since then, it’s served as a model for similar bills in other states and led to some of the highest recycling rates in the nation. The bill was originally intended to discourage littering, but the cash refunds it offers have increasingly become a lifeline for low-income Oregonians and people experiencing homelessness. As extensively reported in Willamette Week, critics now say the bill is fueling open-air drug markets outside return sites. We’ll get an overview of the Bottle Bill from Eric Chambers, vice president of strategy and outreach for the Oregon Beverage Recycling Cooperative. We’re also joined by RJ DeMello, chair of the St. Johns Neighborhood Association; Ken Thrasher, former CEO of Fred Meyer and board chair of the Northwest Community Conservancy; and Kris Brown, manager of The People’s Depot, a Portland redemption center run by can collectors. They share their perspectives on how the Bottle Bill does – or doesn’t – interact with the state’s growing opioid and homelessness crises.

In today's episode, we are privileged to host not one but two expert guests: Liz Dunning and Kris Brown, two strong advocates for gun safety and control in America. Liz Dunning is the current Vice President of Development at Team Brady. She has devoted her 20-year career to public education policy, philanthropic sectors, and nonprofit management strategy. In addition to her impressive professional career, Liz is also a survivor of gun violence, an experience that has deeply influenced her work at Brady. In 2003, her mother was tragically murdered, an event which eventually spurred her commitment to Brady. Liz's resilience is inspiring - her courage has even propelled her to run a marathon in honor of her mother, raising nearly $30,000 for the cause. Joining Liz, we have Kris Brown, the accomplished President of Brady. Known for her lifelong background in policy law and grassroots activism, Kris has been a guiding light in the fight for Common Ground. A noted speaker and media commentator, Kris' influential work on gun violence was featured in Time Magazine's November 2018 cover article, "Guns in America." She's dedicated to advancing the conversation on gun violence beyond the usual polarizing politics, advocating for understanding and effective action. The organization they represent, Brady, was formerly known as the Brady Foundation. Its namesake, Jim and Sarah Brady, championed for the Brady Law after Jim, Ronald Reagan's press secretary, was injured during an assassination attempt on the President. This law mandated background checks for all federally licensed firearm sales, though Kris and Liz will delve into the current gaps in the system. In our conversation, we also discuss Brady's "End Family Fire" campaign and the impactful Ask campaign. Through these initiatives, Brady has been influencing gun owners and the general public to safely store firearms, drastically reducing the risk of accidental injuries or death, especially among children. The results of these campaigns are promising, indicating a significant increase in safety awareness and behavioral change regarding firearm storage. Today, we aren't talking about abolishing the Second Amendment, but rather advocating for a historically accurate understanding of it, coupled with public safety measures to prevent unnecessary deaths from gun violence. We invite you to listen, learn, and join the conversation. Together, we can make a difference. The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway “Everyone has a sphere of influence in their life. Some people really love going and sitting in a hearing room and wearing the shirt and holding elected officials to account. We love when people love that. But it's okay if you don't. You can also get involved in the gun violence prevention movement with Brady by making calls, by sending emails. If you have five minutes in your day, you can make a difference.” -- Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster. 46,000 deaths in America, every single year. We have more guns than people in the United States. And yet somehow, many states across the country are working to make it easier to get guns, easier to carry guns, and easier to kill people without consequence. This is partly because of the lies of the gun industry. To help us sort through the myths and find the truth, we've invited one of my favorite humans back on the show. Fred Guttenberg's daughter Jaime was murdered in the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas school shooting in 2018. Since then, Fred has been one of the world's leading voices in gun violence prevention. He is the co-author of the new book American Carnage, which is now available. Editorial Reviews Review “American Carnage by authors Thomas Gabor and Fred Guttenberg is a must read. Fred, like far too many Americans, understands gun violence because of the murder of his daughter Jaime. His work with Thomas Gabor to take on the myths around guns and gun violence in America and to present an evidence-based approach has resulted in a book that should be read by everyone who cares about this issue.” ―Congressman Eric Swalwell, US Representative to California's 15th congressional district “This book, one I will go back to many times, gives you every essential tool to become a well-informed member of a club I want you to join: committed citizens lifting their voices for the lifesaving changes to gun laws the vast majority of Americans want.” ―Steve Kerr, son, husband, father, grandfather, and head coach of the Golden State Warriors “Let me say at the outset that Fred Guttenberg and I agree on very little when it comes to gun policy. But we listen to each other and we constantly search for common ground. This book written by Thomas Gabor and Fred Guttenberg is an important one. And even though I disagree with some of what's written here, I recommend this book to anyone interested in saving lives. Fred and Tom make a passionate & evidenced-based case for facts to consider when pursuing certain reforms, which I'm sure will spur further passionate debate on this issue between us. I highly recommend American Carnage.” ―Former Congressman Joe Walsh of Illinois's 8th district “There's no single voice more important in the conversation in America about gun safety and avoiding the unthinkable tragedy of losing a child to gun violence than Fred Guttenberg. Fred's voice rings like a clarion in American Carnage where he, along with Thomas Gabor, explores the crucially important issue of misinformation when it comes to gun violence. The assault on truth spreads through every aspect of American politics, and there is no issue more uniquely American or deadly than gun violence. American Carnage is an essential read on one of the most important issues of our time.” ―Nicolle Wallace, host of Deadline: White House on MSNBC and former White House communications director “There are few issues in American life where the stakes are as high as gun violence, nor where the steps to prevent it are more straightforward. Virtually every American wants to see changes put in place to strengthen our laws and enforcement mechanisms to make gun violence more rare. Yet, those changes have been much harder to enact than popular sentiment would dictate. Why is that? Tom Gabor and Fred Guttenberg lay out why in this exceptional book, which explains the lies, half-truths, and myths propagated by the gun industry to fight common sense gun laws and to sell as many guns as possible, no matter the lives lost or cost to our society. For those of us in the gun violence prevention movement―which is all Americans wanting a safer country where gun violence is rare―this book provides all you need to break through those lies and mistruths, and help lead and participate in conversations that can result in real change, where public safety laws are advanced that protect all Americans from gun violence.” ―Kris Brown, president of Brady, United Against Gun Violence --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/alyssa-milano-sorry-not-sorry/message

Interweaving an up-close view of recent protests against Chinese rule with evocative details about Hong Kong's colonial past, Lim contends that the 50-year term for “One Country, Two Systems”—the policy that was supposed to govern its 1997 transition from a British possession to a sovereign territory of China—has ended well ahead of schedule. She explains that Hong Kong officials were excluded in all but “an advisory capacity” from negotiations between Britain and China setting the rules for the handover, and documents how the steady erosion of freedoms led to the “Umbrella Movement” of 2014 (“an explosion of discontent, desire, and, above all, hope”) and widespread anti-government protests in 2019. Lim also explores Hong Kong's multifaceted identity through profiles of residents including Tsang Tsou-choi, the “King of Kowloon,” a “toothless, often shirtless, disabled trash collector” who in the 1950s began covering government property with “misshapen, childlike calligraphy” claiming the British stole his family's land: the entire Kowloon Peninsula. Conversations with protestors, many of whom were not yet born in 1997, convey their burning idealism as well as their growing sense of futility. Montana hosted its 2022 spring football game in Hamilton, Montana on April 8, 2022. The Griz scrimmaged for 78 minutes. The action included interceptions by Trajon Cotton and Corbin Walker plus a near interception by Trevin Gradney during a first half dominated by defense on both sides. In the second half, the quarterbacks continued to struggle to complete passes but came on toward the end. Lucas Johnson hit Ryan Simpson for an 11-yard touchdown and Kris Brown lofted a 25-yard scoring toss to Aaron Fontes for the most formidable scores of the day. Fontes also tracked down Dylan Simmons from behind on what could and should've been a 99-yard pick-6 if not for Fontes running behind the Montana bench for most of the way tracking Simmons down. Following the action, Montana head coach Bobby Hauck, junior linebacker Braxton Hill and Fontes, a sophomore, addressed the media.

You asked for it, and here it is - We sit down for a very special discussion with Kris Brown, President of Brady United, one of the oldest and biggest anti-gun lobby groups in America. We have some very important and interesting discussions surrounding gun control, suicide, safe storage, and how we can work together with those we don't necessarily agree with on all topics, to better our country. Whether it's increased violence in American cities or the uncertainty bought on by the pandemic or an election year, more people arming themselves. In fact, Americans have already bought more guns this year than in all of 2019. Earlier this week, host Dave Anthony spoke to John Lott, President of the Crime Prevention Research Center, and Kris Brown, President of Brady United Against Gun Violence , to discuss this year's surge in gun sales and what a Biden presidency would mean for gun control. The discussions were too long and we only included small portions of each interview in our original segment. Guns will no doubt be a big topic in both local and national races and we wanted you to hear everything both guests had to say about the issue. On the Fox News Rundown Extra, you will hear our complete interviews with both Crime Prevention Research Center's John Lott and Brady United's Kris Brown. Learn more about your ad choices. Listen NowUS gun violence is, in one word, obscene. It is widely considered an epidemic, even the always cautious AMA termed it a "public health crisis" in 2016. Through the first five months of this year there were 148 mass shootings that killed or wounded nearly 750 individuals. It is worth repeating comments I made in April 2018 to introduce Dr. Al-Abga (whom treated victims of the 1999 Columbine High School shooting). US gun deaths are 96 times higher than in Japan, 55 times higher than in the UK, 32 times higher than in Germany. Gun violence is particularly common in schools. Since 2000 there have been over 200 shootings in over 40 states at elementary, middle, high schools and at colleges and universities. Research suggests gun violence is explained largely by one fact: gun prevalence. The US makes up less than 5% of the world's population but owns nearly 45 percent the world's guns, or 300 million that one-third of Americans' possess. Ownership is, for example, 150 times higher than in Japan. This fact largely explains why guns used to commit homicides far exceeds other developed countries. US gun homicides are 471 times more prevalent than in the UK. As for whether mental health issues explain US gun violence, the rate of severe mental disorders in the US is no greater than in comparative countries. During this 26 minute conversation Ms. Brown discusses Brady United's mission or work activities including its legal efforts relative to the 2nd amendment. Moreover, she explains current efforts in the Congress to appropriate moneys for federal gun violence research (that has not been conducted for over 20 years) and recently House-passed bills that include regulating gun sales via extending background checks to private fire arm sales. Ms. Brown also discusses policy plans by Democratic presidential candidates including Sen. Cory Borker to curb gun violence and she discusses the State of Virginia's upcoming special session next month in the wake of the May 31st Virginia Beach shooting that left 12 dead. Ms. Kris Brown is the President of Brady. Ms. Brown began her career working on Capitol Hill for (now former ) Rep. Jim Moran (D-VA), advocating for the bill that would eventually become the Brady Act requiring background checks on federally licensed gun sales. At Brady, she led the lunch of the organization's safe storage campaign to End Family Fire and formed Brady's “Team Enough” youth initiative after February 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre in Florida. A noted media commentator, Ms. Brown was, for example, featured in the November 2018 TIME magazine cover article titled, “Guns in America.” Ms. Brown has also served as the Chief Legal Officer to a publicly traded company based in Switzerland and as a lawyer practicing at the law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges. She earned her law degree at George Mason University.
