Dallas Sills is a 2022 National Proficiency Winner in the category of Swine Production.  Dallas farms in Northeast Georgia with his father, uncle, sister and cousins on a farm that was started in the 1950's by his grandparents.  About four years ago Dallas was starting his supervised agricultural experience and also looking for what he could do on the farm that would be unique to him.  He noticed that nobody in their area were raising and direct marketing pigs, so he decided to give it a shot. Dallas ended up driving to Athens, Georgia and purchase seven pigs from the University Of Georgia Farm that he finished and direct marketed.  Much of the feed for the pigs was grown on his farm, and he imported soybean meal and mixed his own feed rations.  Soon after, Dallas decided to start having the pigs butchered and market cuts of meat rather than whole pigs. As Dallas got this aspect of his business going, word of mouth started to spread, and his business expanded very quickly.  One of the interesting ways in which Dallas' business grew was through selling sausage in a local grocery store.  His name and telephone number was on the packaging, and pretty soon people who bought his sausage at the store were calling him and wanting to purchase multiple pounds of it directly from him.  At the same time that Dallas was making money selling sausage, he was marketing and growing his business.  It is a brilliant and symbiotic relationship.

Let's talk about how to improve your marketing. Here's a question for you - does your product marketing pass the "So What?" test?Potential customers who engage with your marketing will ask the question, “so what?” in order to decide if what you are saying to them is relevant. If it's not relevant, they will stop listening and there will be no engagement or purchase. This means that your marketing campaigns need to be focused on the true benefit to your target market client, not just product or service features. If you heard the question “So what?” from a customer when telling them about your product or service, would you be able to answer it? Answering this question will be the determiner of whether they'll engage further or move on. When your customers look at your product marketing, they want know if it solves their problem or makes their lives easier. In other words, they want to know right away, how your product or service will be beneficial for them.If you want your marketing to be more effective, put yourself in your customer's shoes and consider what is most important to THEM. Then make sure your marketing message clearly addresses that need.Connect with me on LinkedInWatch episodes on our YouTube Channel Watch this episode on our YouTube Channel Schedule a Discovery Call with me www.kaizenperformance.com

On this episode Abadesi talks to Dave Charest, Director of Content Marketing at Constant Contact. He’s here to walk us through all the common mistakes that makers make when marketing their products, and how you can avoid them.In this episode they talk about...How to contribute to an online community as a marketer“Don’t approach it as an opportunity to get your message in front of people, approach it as an opportunity to participate. You can go there and say, ‘hey, check out our stuff,” or you can go there and ask questions and be part of that community. That’s the big difference.”Dave and Aba talk a bit about the different types of marketing approaches that exist and the fact that marketing can sometimes get technical. He talks about why he says “if you’re thinking about starting with content marketing, then yes you should start with content marketing.” He breaks down how to be a good online citizen when you’re approaching a community on behalf of your product, and how to make sure you add value to the discussion, rather than only viewing it from the perspective of how to get the most out of the community that you can.Top tips for developers, designers, and others who are first-time marketers“One of the downfalls of social media is often we don’t see the months, potentially years, of work that went into getting the ten thousand or ten million followers. There’s that saying about overnight success: ‘it took me years to become an overnight success.’” Dave gives his advice for people who are designers, developers, and other makers who usually do not dabble in the marketing space. He says that you need to have a long-term orientation and ensure your plans stretch to twelve to eighteen months, which is when you would expect to start seeing some benefit back to the company or product from your efforts.Which marketing channels to focus onDave points out that the big social media platforms each have their own unique personalities, and that the people that you are trying to reach probably have a personality that meshes with one of the platforms more than the others. That is likely where you are going to find the audience members that you want to reach. He says that it’s also important to think about which channel matches your own personality and interests, so that there’s a good fit between you and the platform, since you are going to be spending a lot of time on it.Common mistakes people make in email marketing“When you're thinking about writing an email, think about answering three questions: What are you offering? Why should the reader care? And what do you want them to do next? If you can answer those three questions, you're actually going to write a pretty persuasive email because you're saying hey, this is what I have for you here today, this is why I think you'll find this thing valuable, and here's what I want you to do next to get it or do it.”Dave talks about why email marketing is so powerful as well as the pitfalls that first-timers encounter and how you can avoid them. He says that it’s important to remember that email lists should always be opt-in, meaning you shouldn’t even think about adding all those emails that you’ve gathered over time without getting permission first. He also talks about the importance of being succinct, making sure that your emails are responsive for mobile, and why perhaps “the original vanity metrics were opens and clicks on emails.”We’ll be back next week so be sure to subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Breaker, Overcast, or wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts.

I never want you to sell your product to make money. It doesn't work. Does it ever feel like you promote your product but nobody cares? Have you ever launched a product and kept refreshing your browser, excitedly waiting for the sales orders to come in, and a few did but then just seemed to fizzle out? Maybe you’re just about to start marketing your product, and you’ve spent hours thinking and writing out why your product is the best there is. I’m going to go ahead and spoil the show for you. If you’re talking about your product more than you’re talking about the customer’s life as a result of your product, you’re making a mistake. Renowned business trainer, Kate Zabriskie once said, "Your customers' perceptions are your reality". No matter how amazing you think your product or service is, your success depends, in part, on how effectively you are able to respond to the ever-changing needs of your target market.
