If you want to build a successful business, you have to stay top of mind, provide value, and continue to learn, grow and change. What follows are three experiences I had in the last week or so that will help me make that point! My friend and associate, Chuck Hester, has a habit that I not only follow but support. While I post a quote of the day in the morning, and a caption contest at night on Facebook, he does the same with a dad joke of the day! My business coach (Marla Tabaka) and I had an awesome conversation about my progress and how I crushed my vision board (the dad part is coming). If you are not familiar with a vision board, Marla convinced me to buy a pin board, hang it on my wall, and fill it with pictures of what I want to achieve. I searched and found a big check (with a big number to make me debt free), a golfer, a for sale sign on my home, a new home, and pictures of my perfect customers. Some people you meet online are Zoom-worthy, while others are coffee worthy. Coffee-worthy means I have to take a shower, get in my car, and meet them for coffee. I had such a Coffee-worthy meeting with a new friend and business associate Chip Royce. The main reason for the meeting was to help each other see our respective businesses through a fresh set of eyes. Your life, business, and money tree need nurturing, care, and sustenance to keep growing. Maybe you want to try a vision board. Maybe search for a coach, mentor, or friend to help you see things from different perspectives. It may be a coffee, a beer or glass of wine, a round of golf, or just a walk, but seek out others for whom you can provide value, and whom you can find value with. "Life is about perspective and how you look at something... ultimately, you have to zoom out." - Whitney Wolfe Herd In this episode, we will discuss how to gain a new perspective on yourself and your vision (board). Meet today's guest: Marla Tabaka Marla Tabaka is a small-business coach and adviser who helps entrepreneurs around the globe grow their businesses well into the millions. She has more than 25 years of experience in corporate and startup ventures and speaks widely on combining strategic and creative thinking for optimum success and happiness. Marla is a leading author at Inc.com, has appeared on Fox Business News and noteworthy publications such as American Express Open, The NY Times, TIME Business, The Huffington Post, Entrepreneur, and The Business Intelligence Report. Marla, you are a master business coach and you've been doing that for a long time. I've heard some of your success stories, how you've helped your clients. But you didn't just stumble into this career. Let the audience know how you became intertwined in the whole coaching world. It was the farthest thing from my mind. Honestly, I had a corporate career, I worked for NBC television and I really climbed the ladder there. And one day, I just decided enough. Things changed, television changed, news media changed. And I just wasn't happy anymore. I spent six months figuring out what I wanted to do when I grew up, and I didn't figure it out. So I left aimlessly without a job without a plan or anything. I did get a job pretty quickly working with a middle-market company. And I launched a new division for them doing web and kiosks development for some large clients like Sears and what was at the time of Claire's boutique. But you know what? I hated it. Here I was a year and a half into a very high paying job. And I learned a lot and did a lot but I hated it. And one day I was in this lovely, independent coffee house. And I was like, wow, I don't feel connected with my community. I've lived here in Naperville 30 some miles outside of the city of Chicago for at that point, probably 15 years. And I didn't have a sense of community and I didn't realize how much I was missing it. And so I bought the coffee house. I wanted community and so I created the community, little darling coffeehouse where musicians from literally all over the world came and artists came and people connected. And it turned into this really beautiful, wonderful space and experience. I was talking to one of my customers and he said why don't you hire a business coach. So he introduced me to Steve and I hired him and magic happened. I felt like I wasn't in this alone anymore. Yeah, someone else invested in my success. I said to him I think I want to become a coach, but I want to do something different than what you do. And I told him people need the mindset and the emotional support to and he said I couldn't agree more and you'd make an amazing coach. So I'd like to mentor you. I sold the coffee house. And I went to school and he mentored me through school sent me pro bono clients and did all that great stuff for me. My practice took off very well and I'm going on my 18th year of coaching. When I was reading your bio, you had a little snippet about the endless chatter, that goes through our minds. And how true is that? When I first started coaching, I was ready to partner with these amazing women and help them grow their businesses, but I wasn't ready for the extraordinary amount of doubt and self-confidence that they lacked, and fear of success or failure. And really, even after going through all my coaching training, I was shocked to find that because these women, by all rights were very successful, educated women, and I just didn't expect it. And so that's when I decided within my first year of coaching, I decided that I really wanted to specialize in mindset before most people even knew what the word was. When we have a negative experience in our life our nervous system actually ingrains that into itself. And so when we're up against another challenge, where self-doubt rises, then neural pathway starts firing off and offering us the same physical response in the stomach or heart or throat, whatever it is that you get, that we had back in the original days when the belief was born. And then the other thing that we have going against us and a lot of people don't know, is the brain is predisposed to negative thinking. So it's the way we're built. Here are some basic tips from Marla for when the negative stuff comes in. Tip #1 - One of the things that I noticed is that entrepreneurs are so demanding of themselves. We don't really keep track of our little wins. We don't acknowledge them enough. What I started doing years ago is every time a client sends me an email that has some sort of praise or thanks or gratitude, and it's some sort of recognition, I put it in a little special folder in my email. And I also jot down like once a week, toward the end of the week, all of the positive things that I've done that week, things that support my success and the success of others. These are small tips that make a big difference. Write a diary of your wins. And when you doubt yourself, you go back to read all of the things that you've done right. You realize what a rock star you are. Take time to celebrate. Tip #2 - Disrupt the negative loop that goes on in our brains. We have to disrupt it by doing something like changing our physiology. It's very difficult when we're really engrossed in something negative to force ourselves to get up and move around and shift something, but it's important. We have to acknowledge that there's energy in our physiology. Stand up, go garden, go take a run, go do whatever, walk around the room, pounding your chest and singing Tarzan tunes, or whatever it is, but walk that negative loop, and you will feel so much better. Tip #3 - Kick the catastrophic thinking to the curb by facing our worst-case scenarios head-on. By separating the negativity from the truth from our reality. A lot of times, our minds travel down this path of destruction, and all these terrible things are going to happen, and you speak these things out loud as if that's happening. And it is important to sit down and to really think of each of those individual thoughts and ask yourself how true they are and say it out loud. The brain needs to separate itself from the problem in order to solve it effectively. So when you write things down, or you draw pictures, or even speak out loud, the brain can step back and assimilate and give you feedback, which can be very, very helpful. It's important to remember that this thinking, the way that we blow things out of proportion is not our fault, it's the brain's natural tendency. Tip #4 - Sit down the problem or the fear or whatever it is in front of you like, another person. And so you sit down, you talk to it, like it was separate from you and you have this back and forth conversation. And it's, it feels really weird. But you'll get the answers. Do it the way your mind is going to respond best. As 2019 comes to a close, it is a great time to reflect on the past year and then to turn our focus toward the New Year in anticipation of good things to come. In this episode, I share with you a ritual that I started three years ago and will continue as a new decade approaches. Choosing a word that is emblematic of who I am, what I want more of in my life, and or what I plan to contribute to others. This word sets the stage for writing my intention for the year. Not to replace goals, but to exist alongside them. I share a famous quote that serves as inspiration and reminds us that our Words Matter, as they lead us to our destiny. I encourage you to consider naming your word that reflects who you are, who you are becoming, and how you want to contribute to others. Then, using your word(s) set your intentions for 2020. In the episode I mention an article by Marla Tabaka in Inc. The presence of psychopathy in the workplace—although psychopaths typically represent a relatively small percentage of the staff—can do enormous damage when in senior management roles.[1] Psychopaths are usually most common at higher levels of corporate organizations and their actions often cause a ripple effect throughout an organization, setting the tone for an entire corporate culture. Examples of detrimental effects are increased bullying, conflict, stress, staff turnover and absenteeism; reduction in productivity and in social responsibility.[2] Ethical standards of entire organizations can be badly damaged if a corporate psychopath is in charge.[3] A 2017 UK study found that companies with leaders who show "psychopathic characteristics" destroy shareholder value, tending to have poor future returns on equity.[4] Academics refer to psychopaths in the workplace individually variously as workplace psychopaths, executive psychopaths, corporate psychopaths, business psychopaths, successful psychopaths, office psychopaths, white-collar psychopaths, industrial psychopaths, organizational psychopaths or occupational psychopaths.[5] Criminal psychologist Robert D. Hare coined the term "Snakes in Suits" as a synonym for workplace psychopaths.[6] 1 in 25 Americans fit the criteria for sociopathy. Dr. Hervey Cleckley was the first researcher to name the concept of psychopathy in 1941. https://www.inc.com/marla-tabaka/16-signs-you-re-working-with-a-sociopath-and-how-to-protect-yourself.html In her book The Sociopath Next Door, clinical psychologist and former Harvard faculty member Martha Stout, PhD, provides a great roadmapfor avoiding sociopaths. Am I still passionate about my work or am I too exhausted to feel energized by my passion? (It’s time to figure out what fuels your flame and get back to it.) Do I plan my week and review my to-do list either first thing in the morning or the night before? Do I have a healthy morning routine that inspires and energizes me, or do I lay in bed catching up on emails before my feet hit the ground? Do I have solid goals and targets in place and know how to achieve them? (Lack of clarity is one of the top culprits in poor time management.) Do I come up with new and amazing ideas all of the time and desert my current goals to investigate these bright and shiny objects? Do I interrupt my workday to perform household tasks and run too many personal errands? Do I allow others to treat me like I don’t have a job, simply because I work from home? Do I take at least one vacation per year? (Burnout leads to decreased productivity.) Do I constantly live with guilt about not spending enough time with my family or anything else? (Negative emotions preoccupy the mind and weigh us down.) Do I invest in myself and my business by consulting with experts, or do I think I know it all?

Do I hand off more responsibilities as my employees grow in their knowledge and capabilities? Do I meet with my employees regularly to keep everyone on the same page? (This prevents many issues and mistakes from arising.) Have I created a culture of loyalty and trust? (Employees who experience a positive company culture are far more effective.) Do I let go of employees who have shown a record of poor performance? Do I live in fear that one or more of my most valuable employees will leave the company? (No one is irreplaceable.) Do I direct my employees to document procedures so it’s not a crisis every time someone leaves the company? (This also adds value to your company.) Do I want everyone to like me? (You’ll invest far too much time and make too many exceptions to win someone over.) Do I: a) Run a business that allows me the flexibility to be with my children when I need/want to, especially in the summer months? b.) Live in stress and chaos trying to squeeze work-related tasks in between my children’s needs and desires? c.) Ask for or hire help so I can focus on my business without interruption and enjoy the time I spend with my children? Do I know what my “prime time” is and use it to achieve things that take a high level of energy and creativity? (Perform tasks that consume more of your energy during the hours when you typically feel more energetic.) Do I have proof that my business model can be highly profitable as it is today or is it possible that I’m spinning my wheels, rather than identifying a new path?

I’ve asked and answered these tough questions for myself, because although I don’t find myself saying “I don’t have enough time in the day..” I do find myself saying, “No, I can’t go have fun with you I have work I need to do.” Or “I’m feeling overwhelmed.” Or, “Why won’t this rash on my leg that’s been here for over a year and a half go away for good?” and then balk when the nurse practitioner suggests that it could be stress-related rather than an 18-month long bacterial infection that hasn’t killed me yet… So what about you? Do I have a system in place to address the unexpected issues in an organized and efficient way to lessen their impact on my priorities? Do I regularly track my time to better understand my strengths and weaknesses in the time management category? Do I batch my calls into certain days and time slots as to avoid 30- and 60-minute voids between them? (Seriously, nothing important gets done during that gap of time.) Do I assign specific days and timeframes to specific tasks (e.g., Tuesday mornings for sales calls, 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. every day to return calls and answer emails, Thursday mornings to write blogs or do your marketing work)? Do I procrastinate on important tasks? What is my belief system about money? Do I feel like there will never be enough? (This leads to poor decisions, based in fear rather than logic.) Do I pick up the phone every time it rings and respond to every email when it comes in? Do I drop everything for those one or two clients who are most demanding? (Bad idea!) Do I train my employees well, so they don’t have to ask constant questions?

Do I maintain control of nearly everything because I believe no one else can do it as well? Do I overprepare for prospect calls or client meetings because I’m afraid of not knowing everything I “should” know? Do I believe I can’t afford to hire someone to help me? (You can’t afford not to.) Do I really and truly believe that there is not enough time to achieve the things that only I can do? (We create the conditions we believe to be true.) Do I leave open room in my schedule every day to manage the unexpected? (Avoid scheduling yourself back-to-back all day long.)

It’s basically an app that curates content from across the interwebs for you based on your specific interests and pulls it together in a magazine-like format. So, of course, my Flipboard is set up for all things entrepreneur and business and self-improvement and web design. Shocking, right? So the other day I was flipping through my Flipboard and I came across this article on Inc.com written by Marla Tabaka with the headline “Not Enough Time in the Day? Ask Yourself These 50 Tough Questions to Find Out Why.” So we all have the same 24 hours in a day, right? So why is it that some people seem to be super productive rockstar machines while others feel constantly stressed and like they can never get everything done? To be totally honest, I bounce between those two feelings. Sometimes I think “Yep, I got this, I’m ON IT!” And other days I think, “There’s no way I’ll be able to get this all done.” And that’s why I think the questions Marla is asking us to ask ourselves are brilliant, and while I’m not going to talk about all 50 of the questions, I’m going to pick out a few that really resonate with me right now – whether I’m really great at them or whether I need to work on them. Do I have clarity around my vision, goals, and daily tasks? (Lack of clarity leads to procrastination and confusion.) Do I pack my days with too many to-do items, creating unrealistic expectations? Do I allow too many interruptions from employees, prospects, customers, friends, and family? Do I place strict boundaries around my time and let others know what they are? Do I stick to my boundaries or do I make too many exceptions? Do I talk a lot, extending conversations into hour-long chats when it’s unnecessary? (Which is always.) Am I a master in the art of multitasking? (Perpetual multitasking has an adverse effect on productivity.) Do I love the adrenaline buzz of being overly busy? Is living in chaos more comfortable to me than stilling my mind? Do I find it really difficult to say no? Ooh, that’s some good stuff!

As I mentioned in episode 130, I’m going to be really honest in answering these questions because the only way to really make progress is to drop all of your excuses. You can get a link to Marla’s full article on Inc.com, “Not Enough Time in the Day? Ask Yourself These 50 Tough Questions to Find Out Why.” Um, challenge accepted! So here we go with my answers to question 11 through 20 on the list, and I’d love to hear your answers! Do I accept jobs and clients that don’t fit my ideal model? Do I often find myself in a crunch to finish client projects because I’m in over my head or didn’t assign a realistic deadline? How many hours a day do I needlessly spend on social media? Do I have systems in place for repetitious tasks? Am I as organized as I can possibly be? Do I maintain control of nearly everything because I believe no one else can do it as well? Do I overprepare for prospect calls or client meetings because I’m afraid of not knowing everything I “should” know? Do I believe I can’t afford to hire someone to help me? (You can’t afford not to.) Do I really and truly believe that there is not enough time to achieve the things that only I can do? (We create the conditions we believe to be true.) Do I leave open room in my schedule every day to manage the unexpected? (Avoid scheduling yourself back-to-back all day long.)
