Martin Flanagan is a much loved Australian sportswriter, known for his lyrical phrase and passion for stories that intertwine sport and culture. In 2018 he delivered a monologue in praise of Melbourne Football Club legends, and also ordinary supporter and officials. It is a majestic piece, 'Thinking about you, Ron Barassi' and it first aired during Preliminary Final week, 2018 on radio station SEN. It's the feature speech of this episode, as Martin discusses his torn allegiances for Grand Final day, having spent lengthy periods as an 'embedded' writer at both Footscray (Western Bulldogs) and Melbourne. He also talks about key figures in the piece, Jim Stynes, Robbie Flower, Liam Jurrah, Sean White, Nathan Jones, and of course Ron Barassi. Because Flanagan wrote a book on the 2016 Bulldogs, 'A Wink from the Universe', he also has stories about Marcus Bontempelli, Tom Liberatore, Bob Murphy and Easton Wood. It's a great grand final episode, covering the Western Bulldogs and the Demons.  You can purchase Tony's 1989: The Great Grand Final here, or email him for a signed a copy. In which John and Ian once again get side tracked in their search for the golden game, the game as it should be, the football we all yearn for and seek to resurrect via our endless tinkering and tweaking. This time, while on the way to 1858 and the very birth of the game in Melbourne, Ian throws a spanner in the works, claiming that there was no birth and there is no origin. This leads to discussions involving the work of legendary Soccer Historian Roy Hay, friend of the show @AFLisnotthesport, George Orwell, Martin Flanagan and Greg de Moore's biography of Tom Wills , who, apparently, is not the father of the game after all.DISCLAIMER. This episode was recorded during a hard lock down in Melbourne meaning we had to converse over long distance. This resulted in the audio being less that perfect in the middle section of the podcast. Jane Tewson, Founder and Director of Igniting Change, is a global change maker who’s founded five flourishing charities, was named by The Times as a top ten innovator in the UK, received a CBE from Prince Charles, and humbly continues to create meaningful change in the lives of countless others. But this episode is not about accolades. Because Jane does not see herself as anything special, and she is not interested in being in the spotlight. What Jane does see are individuals who have the desire to create change in their own lives despite their circumstance. Jane believes that people inherently carry the capacity to find their own voice, when they feel respected, understood and listened to, rather than when they are spoken at, or given to, by (often) well-meaning others. Jane is ever-curious and drawn to the humanity and courage of people doing it tough, and in this episode of Human Cogs, hosts Madeleine Grummet and Sabina Read free range with Jane about her incredible childhood, her instinct for igniting social change, how we bring death to life - and how we can all better connect with each other by making judgement fall away and ultimately seeing people without the labels that typically define them. Jane is an unassuming force of nature and invites us all to consider how small shifts can create deeply meaningful change. You can read more about Jane in Martin Flanagan’s book, The Art of Pollination, published by Hardie Grant and available from Amazon, Booktopia and Dymocks. In 1989, Footscray Football Club was on its knees. Out of cash and nearly out of time, they survived extinction and merger - just. But three years on in 1992, the Bulldogs finished second on the ladder and were a game away from the grand final.  For good reason, they thought 1993 would be the year - their first flag since ‘54.  Sensing they might be nearing something special, Terry Wheeler, senior coach and innovator, invited Martin Flanagan, the prolific columnist for The Age, behind the curtain to write a book on the season from within the inner sanctum. What he produced from his time at the club – Southern Sky, Western Oval – was a classic, but sadly, the Doggies season wasn’t.  Despite a fast start and an ability to knock off most serious contenders for the flag along the way, they were too inconsistent to feature in September. Outside of the club and away from the game, Martin, as always, was just as busy writing the untold or misunderstood stories of Australia.  Not least, that meant promoting understanding and reconciliation between indigenous and non-indigenous Australia. Back then, as it is now, his is a leading voice on this great  unfinished business. Those themes intersected in 1993, the season when footy embraced Aboriginal culture in a way that it hadn’t before, laying the building blocks to what would become the league's groundbreaking racial and religious vilification policy two years on.  So to talk about the sons of the west, and the journey of Australia’s first people in the world of top-flight footy, we welcome Martin Flanagan to The Greatest Season that Was, 1993.  The Greatest Season That Was: 93 documents our contention that in 1993, footy was never better. Hosted by Adam Collins, Dan Brettig and Shannon Gill, this series is an in-depth exploration of one amazing season.  The Greatest Season That Was: 93 is produced by Jay Mueller and edited by Thom Lion. The 2017 Richmond Premiership story is fantastic but the Western Bulldogs version in 2016 is considered by many as the purest and most romantic football story of the AFL era. Jack Banister sat down with Martin Flanagan, author of a new book on the Dogs 2016 triumph "A Wink From The Universe" to discuss how the book came to be, where the Dogs' 2016 triumph ranks among other fairytale finals and the importance of storytelling in general.

Waleed Aly is an Australian journalist, academic, lawyer, television and radio presenter. Basically he's one hell of an overachiever. He's best known as the host of The Project, but he also writes for the New York Times, the Sydney Morning Herald and lectures at Monash University. Waleed started his career as a newspaper columnist after reaching out to journalist, Martin Flanagan and was one of the panel members on the Channel 31 show, Salam Cafe. He'd been a regular in the fourth chair on The Project when he got the call up to replace Charlie Pickering and left his role as host of drive on Radio National to take the gig. In this episode, Waleed Aly talks about what it was like being a Year 6 radio star, how saying "yes" to everything has been instrumental in his success and why the media's tendency to 'perform' opinions is dumbing down the collective conversation. This past weekend was the 5th annual Songwriter's retreat, hosted by Louisiana Songwriters and Amigo's, Steve Judice and Barry Hebert. This episode includes tracks recorded by artists in attendance at the retreat and with each artist's express permission to duplicate and share herein. The opening track is 'Slow Down' by Steve Judice from his 2011 release, 'When Darkness Falls'. Next, you'll hear a bit of songwriting in progress as Barry Hebert and Tony Cobb collaborate under the trees by the fire (forgive me if a little wind blows on the mic here). Nextly, Gary Ragan will share his song 'Shooting Stars', a tune he composed at last years retreat! First timer, Amelia Ryland follows with 'Small Town Blues', a lovely groove! Ryan Harris is next with a song he wrote right there in the Tickfaw marsh and recorded the very next morning in the living room of Cabin 5 (I play dobro on it!). The closing track is a favorite of mine by Baton Rouge songwriter and first time retreater, Martin Flanagan; His song 'Screen Door' can be found on his CD, 'Beneath these Strings'. Steve Judice's music can be obtained; http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/stevejudice2 Martin Flanagan's music: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/martinflanagan Thanks to all the artists who so kindly shared their time and talent with me this weekend at the 5th Annual Songwriter's retreat in Tickfaw, Louisiana.
