We continue our Lenten series today called “Looking to Lent.” Each message will cover another difficulty that we face in life. Our message today is “Facing Indignation.” We reflect on the ways that we can cut ourselves off from love because of our anger at others. Let us look for hope as we are looking to Lent. Our scripture readings come from Joshua 5:9-12; 2 Corinthians 5:16-21; and Luke 15:1-3,11b-32.

“Rock 'n roll is really swing with a modern name,” Freed once said. “It began on the levees and plantations, took in folk songs, and features blues and rhythm. It's the rhythm that gets to the kids – they're starved of music they can dance to, after all those years of crooners.”HISTORICAL ALAN FREED MOMENTS:Freed moved to WINS in New York in 1954 where his late night radio show became known as Alan Freed's Rock 'n' Roll Party. His popularity was immediate and so was the criticism. In July 1957, Freed was given his own nationally televisedrock 'n roll dance show billed as “The Big Beat" on ABC-TV. The show featured a mix of pop and R&B acts. Early reviews for the national show were good, but it was cancelled abruptly after Frankie Lymon, one of the show's black performers, was shown on air dancing with a white girl. The biracial dance scene enraged ABC's Southern affiliates and the network cancelled the show despite its growing popularity.Freed was featured in five of the earliest rock 'n' roll movies – Rock Around the Clock and Rock, Rock, Rock in 1956; Mister Rock And Roll and Don't Knock the Rock in 1957 and Go Johnny Go in 1958.Freed was initially interred in New York, the city where he died at 43 in 1965. His family moved his remains to Cleveland years later and then to the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame Museum 12 years ago, his son Lance Freed said.“I thought this was the last move, but then I got this call to move him,” Freed said. “He said, ‘You've got to come pick him up.' ““The museum world is moving away from exhibiting remains” since ashes don't help tell a story, he was told.Bullshit. The Hall's Board simply felt human remains did not belong where they could depress those paying for admission.Alan Freed Urned His Right To Remain In The Home That Utilized His Rock and Roll Signature As It's Way Of Earning Millions Upon Millions Of Dollars.PLEASE VISIT THE ALAN FREED ARCHIVES AT:https://www.alanfreed.com/wp/archives/
The Credibility Crises (Consistency will produce credibility) Credibility means: “The quality of being trusted and believed in”. By: Pastor George Lehman James 1:19-22 (Amp) - 19 Understand [this], my beloved brethren. Let every man be quick to hear [a ready listener], slow to speak, slow to take offense and to get angry. 20 For man's anger does not promote the righteousness God [wishes and requires]. 22 But be doers of the Word [obey the message], and not merely listeners to it, betraying yourselves [into deception by reasoning contrary to the Truth]. I want to focus on what James's thought was important to address: Anger is just one letter short of danger. Ephesians 4:1(Amp) - I therefore, the prisoner for the Lord, appeal to and beg you to walk (lead a life) worthy of the [divine] calling to which you have been called [with behavior that is a credit to the summons to God's service, If we are going to live a life that is credible, we will have to learn to act rather than REACT. Act out the word; not to react in a manor that destroys your testimony. They say the world needs more warm hearts and fewer hotheads. Story about Moses: The day begins like any other day but ends like no other day. For on this day Moses gives full vent to his anger and finds himself running for his life. Moses is part of a mistreated minority who were grievously mistreated. Not for doing something wrong but for being perceived as a possible threat. He grew up privileged in the palace of a king. He himself was spared such heartless treatment. However, year after year he sees his people suffer. One day he snaps. He is filled with rage as he sees one of his own being beaten. That day Moses kills an Egyptian and hides his body. The Pharaoh hears about it and Moses flees for his life from Egypt. Question: Have you ever become so angry to the point that you acted rashly? Looking at the life of Moses you can see the result of the power of anger... We all have a choice, whether to act wisely or to react foolishly. We must learn to keep our anger under control. Proverbs 29:11 (NIV) - He who being often reproved* hardens his neck shall suddenly be destroyed and that without remedy. *reproved = being spoken to about your conduct Injustice provokes many people to anger. Moses felt understandable anger over the injustice of his brothers. What he did got him into trouble. What he revealed is his true character and inability to fulfil the task ahead of him. God sent him into a desert place for 40 years to learn to do it God's way. Acts 7:24-30 (Amp) - The story about Moses how he killed the Egyptian and fled into the desert What is the meaning of anger that James is talking about? Fire-fighters know the danger of letting a flame get out of control. They respond quickly because they are trained to. We need to train ourselves to respond quickly to the flame of anger before it consumes our life and destroys relationships. Proverbs 14:17 (NIV) - A quick tempered man does foolish things… Anger: A strong emotion of irritation or agitation* that occurs when a need or expectation is not met. *agitation = disturbed mental state (Agitasie) Proverbs 29:22 (NIV) - An angry man stirs up dissension* and a hot-tempered one commits many sins. *dissension= problems arising from difference of opinions Proverbs 22:24 (Amp) - Make no friendship with a man given to anger and with a wrathful man do not associate. What is the magnitude of anger? Anger, the word, covers many levels of emotions. Anger is like heat - it ranges from mild, controlled irritations to hot uncontrolled explosions. The bible uses many words to express the word ANGER We see this in the Book of Ephesians 4: Indignation[verontwaardiging]: It's an anger provoked by something appearing unjust or unworthy. It's often seen as justified. Mark10:14 (NIV) - …Not allowing the children to come to Jesus; when Jesus saw (it) He was indignant… Wrath[toorn/woede]: Is burning anger accompanied by a desire to avenge. Wrath often moves from the emotion of anger to an outward expression of anger. God expresses His wrath as divine judgement upon those who commit willful sin. Fury[ontplof]: Fury is fiery anger. It's so fierce that it destroys common sense. Fury suggests a powerful force wanting to harm or destroy. The Jews were so angry with Peter and the apostles: Acts 5:33 (Amp) - When they heard this, they were furious and wanted to put them to death. That's why the Bible says in Proverbs 27:4 - Anger is cruel and fury overwhelming… Rage[woede/uitbars]: Rage is blazing anger. It involves loss of self-control, violence and temporary insanity. Many people after an outburst of rage, have remorse. “I can't believe I did that”. Proverbs 19:3 (NIV) - A man's own folly ruins his life, yet his heart rages against the Lord. What are some of the misconceptions about anger? Do you view your anger as negative and sinful? If you hide your anger from others and even yourself, you'll place yourself in bondage and false guilt. Is it a sin to be angry? NO! The initial feeling of anger is a God-given emotion. The way you respond or express these feelings determines whether you have allowed your anger to become sin. Ephesians 4:26-27 (Amp) - When angry, do not sin, do not ever let your wrath, your exasperation, your fury or indignation last until the sun goes down. Leave no (such) room or foothold for the devil (give no opportunity to him). How can I keep from feeling guilty when I'm angry? Anger is a signal that something is wrong- -like a red light on a dashboard). Stop, take action. Deal with what is causing your anger. Colossians 3:8 (Amp) - But now put away and rid yourselves (completely) of all these things: Anger, rage, bad feelings towards others, curses and slander, and foul-mouthed abuse and shameful utterance from your lips. It's a choice!!! James is dealing with our credibility [geloofwaardigheid] How we conduct ourselves says a lot about what's happening within us. What do you need God to help you with in the area of anger?

This week Liz David-Barrett is joined by expert researchers Monika Bauhr and Marcia Grimes from the Quality of Government Institute, where they conduct and promote research on the causes, consequences and nature of Good Governance. This episode addresses the multifaceted nature of corruption and the challenges of promoting accountability in democratic systems. Monika and Marcia cover a range of topics, including the implications of transparency as an accountability mechanism, the role of elites in maintaining the status quo, and the relationship between women's representation and corruption reduction. The discussion acknowledges the challenges in measuring corruption, while highlighting innovative methodological approaches that challenge simplistic assumptions, to better understand the dynamics between democracy and corruption. Lecture summary: Grand corruption – the abuse of public office for private gain by a nation's leaders (kleptocrats) - has devastating consequences. As then UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said, the amount lost to corruption each year is enough to feed the world's hungry 80 times over. Grand corruption contributes to climate change and is a major impediment to ameliorating it. The refugees creating humanitarian and political crises around the world are largely fleeing failed states ruled by kleptocrats. Grand corruption is antithetical to democracy. Indignation at grand corruption has prompted uprisings in many countries and created grave dangers for international peace and security.Grand corruption does not thrive and endure in many countries because of a lack of laws. 186 UN member states are parties to the UN Convention against Corruption (UNCAC). Virtually all of them have the laws required by the UNCAC criminalizing corrupt conduct, and international obligations to enforce them against their corrupt leaders. However, kleptocrats have impunity in the countries they rule because they control the police, the prosecutors, and the courts. Therefore, the proposed International Anti-Corruption Court (IACC) is urgently needed. It will be a court of last resort, to prosecute kleptocrats and their private conspirators, for violating treaty counterparts of the laws of countries that are unwilling or unable to do so themselves. Successful prosecutions, and civil suits, in the IACC will result in the recovery and repatriation of stolen assets. The imprisonment of kleptocrats, who are among the worst abusers of human rights, will create opportunities for the democratic process to replace them with leaders dedicated to serving their citizens rather than enriching themselves. It will also deter others tempted to emulate their example. The effort to establish the IACC is rapidly progressing. It has been publicly endorsed by: more than 350 world leaders, including 55 former Presidents and Prime Ministers; the European Parliament; the Netherlands, Canada, Ecuador, Nigeria, Moldova, and the UK Labour Party before it recently took office. Many other countries have privately expressed support for the IACC or strong interest in seriously considering the treaty being drafted to establish it that will be ready to be reviewed in early 2025.Speaker: Mark L. Wolf is a Senior United States District Judge and Chair of the Integrity Initiatives International (III), which has catalyzed and is coordinating the campaign to create the IACC. Prior to his appointment in 1985, Judge Wolf served as a Special Assistant to the Attorney General of the US after Watergate and as the chief federal corruption prosecutor in Massachusetts. He has taught a course on combatting corruption internationally at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. He has spoken on the role of a judge in a democracy, human rights issues, and combatting corruption in many countries, including Russia, China, Ukraine, Turkey, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Romania, Hungary, Egypt, Cyprus, Panama, Colombia, Mexico, Norway, the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands, and at the Vatican.

Welcome to a special episode of "Thinking 2 Think" with your host, M.A. Aponte. In this thought-provoking installment, we embark on a journey to unravel the complexities of selective outrage and its intertwining with the power of social media.Throughout this episode, we delve deep into the phenomenon of selective outrage, exploring how individuals and societies often express moral indignation selectively, focusing on certain issues while neglecting others. We examine the psychological and sociological factors that drive this behavior, from cognitive biases to tribal instincts, shedding light on the underlying mechanisms at play. But our exploration doesn't end there. We also examine the role of social media in amplifying and perpetuating selective outrage. With its algorithms, echo chambers, and viral dynamics, social media has the power to shape our perceptions, influence our opinions, and drive collective action. We dissect how platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram can both unite and divide us, fueling moral indignation while simultaneously blurring the lines between genuine concern and performative outrage. As we navigate these complex issues, we'll also touch upon pressing global events, from the conflict in Ukraine to the Israeli-Palestinian tensions, and explore how they intersect with selective outrage and social media dynamics. Additionally, we'll examine domestic controversies, such as protests and immigration policies, and analyze their resonance in the digital sphere.Join M.A. Aponte on this intellectual journey as we think critically, question everything, and unravel the layers of selective outrage and social media influence. Everyone gets angry, and even the psalmist says, and teaches children to say, “Indignation seizes me.” But what drives the anger is important, as the psalmist also makes clear.Music Credit: Johann Sebastian Bach, Trio from Brandenburg Concerto, No. 1, Movement 4

What would it mean for us to take Christianity seriously as a way of life, a set of practices and ways of being in the world—and not merely a list of beliefs?Theologian Kevin Hector (University of Chicago Divinity School) joins Ryan McAnnally-Linz for a discussion of his latest book, Christianity as a Way of Life. Together they reflect on the practice of Christianity; the role of devotion to God in framing the importance of Christianity to a practitioner; the unique practices embedded in the life of Christians; the plausibility of Christianity today; what it means to see Jesus in people and look for the image of God in others; the practices of imitation and forgiveness; the conflicted character of Christian experience; loving God as loving what God loves; the significance of shame; and what it means to renarrate your life in light of the Gospel.About Kevin HectorKevin Hector is the Naomi Shenstone Donnelley Professor of Theology and of the Philosophy of Religions; also in the College. His teaching and research are devoted largely to interpretive questions, particularly (a) how best to understand faith commitments, and (b) how the outworking of such commitments can shed light on broader cultural issues. Hector's first book, *Theology without Metaphysics* (Cambridge University Press, 2011), thus defends a novel approach to the problem of metaphysics by developing a philosophically-informed and critically-articulated theology of language. In his second book, The Theological Project of Modernism: Faith and the Conditions of Mineness (Oxford University Press, 2015), Hector explores the idea of 'mineness,' in the sense of being able to identify with one's life or experience it as self-expressive, by tracing the development of this idea in modern theology. His third book, Christianity as a Way of Life: A Systematic Theology (Yale University Press, 2023) argues that we can understand Christianity as a set of practices designed to transform one's way of perceiving and being in the world or, in sum, as a way of life. And in his forthcoming book-project, tentatively entitled “Life as a Theological Project: Creating a Usable Past,” Hector focuses on memoirs as a site of theological reflection, not least because memoirs shed light on issues that people wrestle with more generally.Follow him on Twitter/X here.Show NotesCheck out Christianity as a Way of Life: A Systematic Theology (Yale University Press, 2023)Disconnect between academic theology and ordinary ChristiansLosing God to Christian practicesDevotion as God's importance being important to you.Imitation as practice for learning devotion.LeBron James as an example of devotion“The Martha Stewart effect”Being yourself as a form of devotionMother Teresa and “seeing Jesus in people”Looking for the image of God in othersThe hermeneutical circle: making sense of the parts through the whole, and revising our sense of the whole through the parts.Nick Wolterstorff, forgiving as naming the wrong as a wrong, while excusing is ignoring the wrong.Indignation versus resentmentHow transparent are we to ourselves?Practice as building habitual reflexesPractices make it more and more sensible to orient towards GodShame in Hector's Christian frameworkMarilynne Robinson's LilaProduction NotesThis podcast featured Kevin HectorEdited and Produced by Evan RosaHosted by Evan RosaProduction Assistance by Macie Bridge, Alexa Rollow, & Tim BergelandA Production of the Yale Center for Faith & Culture at Yale Divinity School https://faith.yale.edu/aboutSupport For the Life of the World podcast by giving to the Yale Center for Faith & Culture: https://faith.yale.edu/give

Honoring people who deserve honor is easy. Most of us know people we deeply respect, and showing honor to them flows effortlessly from our hearts. The real challenge comes when we're asked to honor flawed people, people who don't live up to our expectations, people who've failed to do what they should have done. We ask ourselves, “How can I respect someone who hasn't earned my respect? How can I love someone who doesn't love me? How can I admire someone who looks down on me? How can I joyfully give to someone who only takes from me?” Indignation rises up inside us. We rebel at the mere suggestion that we should honor such people. Yet God loves it when we give honor, especially when we honor those who, from our human perspective, no longer deserve it. In this brief passage we observe a remarkable example of honor. A group of Gentile believers is taking up an offering for their poor brothers and sisters in Judea, yet some of those who were going to receive this gift hadn't rejoiced at the news that Gentiles were being saved in Antioch. They were troubled by the thought that people who didn't observe the Law of Moses were being welcomed into the church. The new believers in Antioch may not have been aware that these cultural barriers existed, but Barnabas and Saul certainly were. Yet they said nothing to discourage this generous act of love and happily carried their offering to the elders in Jerusalem. In spite of the presence of some very wrong attitudes, these men and women still deserved to be honored. And on behalf of this growing Gentile church, Barnabas and Saul gladly gave such honor to them. In doing so, they left a profound example for us to follow. Like the church in Antioch, we too are to give honor to whom honor is due (Ro 13:7)…even when it appears they don't deserve it.

Living in a World That Makes You Mad
The increasing sin in our world will provoke anger in Christians, but we must be careful and restrained to never allow our emotions to propel sinful words or actions.
