A mail carrier in trouble with his supervisors opened fire in a crowded post office on August 21st 1986, killing 14 workers and injuring 7 others before killing himself with a bullet in the head. The police said the carrier, Patrick Henry Sherrill, of Oklahoma City, burst into post office around 6:45 A.M., pulled at least three pistols from a mail pouch and, without a word, started shooting at his fellow employees. It was the nation's worst shooting since July 18, 1984, when 21 people, including the gunman, died at a McDonald's restaurant in San Ysidro, California, and it helped coin the term "going postal". In the midst of the ongoing national dialogue surrounding immigration, Minnesota officials are pushing for policies that would provide protection to individuals who have entered the country without legal documentation. This move is under consideration despite the recent detention of an individual by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), who was suspected to have connections with the terrorist group al-Shabaab. ICE reported that earlier in the year, a 27-year-old individual from Somalia was detained in Minneapolis, having previously breached the country's borders near San Ysidro, California. Post his apprehension, he was allowed to roam freely within the country. The proposed policy changes are being advocated by a group of state legislators, mostly Democrats, who are calling for a new law that would put restrictions on state law enforcement agencies, preventing them from aiding federal bodies in the removal of such individuals who have entered and are residing in the United States unlawfully. This proposed legislation, suitably termed the 'North Star Act,' marked its presence in the Senate as well as the House of Representatives in 2023. The driving force behind this legislative initiative is Sandra Feist, a state representative from the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL), who postulated that implementing federal immigration laws would not be an optimal use of state resources, given its existing challenges and priorities. She expressed this viewpoint during a conversation with the Reformer.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
A cohesive group of truckers is getting ready to embark on a journey to various points across the U.S.-Mexico frontier in the coming week. The intention behind this mobilization is to shed brighter light on what they perceive as the non-rigorous approach towards immigration employed by President Joe Biden's administration. This approach has been widely tied to the increased unauthorized crossings, a concern that continues to amplify, particularly in the state of Texas. The Texan Governor, Greg Abbott, who is a Republican, has been prominently going against the government and the Supreme Court guidelines by commanding his National Guard to set up blade-style wire blockades near the border segment close to Eagle Pass. The objective behind this bold move is to help control the unrestrained passage of immigrants. Representative Keith Self, a Republican from Texas, has announced a multiple-day event named 'Take Our Border Back' which involves a trucker convoy. The time period for this is from January 29th to February 3rd. The culmination points for these routes will be Eagle Pass, TX, Yuma, AZ, and San Ysidro, CA. These trucker convoy movements in the U.S. are inspired by similar public standoffs that took place in Canada during the COVID pandemic. Canadian truckers organized rallies around government structures in Ottawa and border checkpoints to publicly express their disagreement with the country's stern vaccine mandates. The war between the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and the Sinaloa Cartel is a complex and ongoing conflict within the world of Mexican drug trafficking organizations. Both cartels are powerful and influential in the drug trade, which has led to violent confrontations as they vie for control of key drug trafficking routes and territories. Here's a summary of the conflict:CJNG (Jalisco New Generation Cartel): CJNG is a relatively newer and highly aggressive criminal organization that emerged in the early 2010s. It is known for its brutality and has rapidly expanded its influence, challenging established cartels like the Sinaloa Cartel.Sinaloa Cartel: The Sinaloa Cartel, led by notorious figures like Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, was one of the most dominant drug cartels in Mexico. Despite Guzmán's arrest and extradition to the United States, the cartel continues to operate and compete with CJNG.Rivalry and Violence: The CJNG and Sinaloa Cartel have engaged in a violent struggle for control of drug trafficking routes, production areas, and distribution networks. This rivalry has resulted in numerous clashes, assassinations, and brutal violence in various regions of Mexico.Government Intervention: Mexican authorities, with the support of the United States, have launched operations to combat both cartels. These efforts have resulted in high-profile arrests and seizures of significant drug shipments, but the cartels continue to adapt and persist.Impact: The conflict has had a devastating impact on the Mexican population, leading to widespread violence, displacement, and instability in affected regions. It has also affected drug trafficking routes and the flow of illegal drugs into the United States.Ongoing Situation: As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, the war between CJNG and the Sinaloa Cartel continued to be a significant and evolving issue. The dynamics of the conflict may have shifted since then, so I recommend consulting the latest news sources for updates on the situation. In this episode we take a trip down to Baja California for a look at the bloody war being waged for the drug corridors into California through San Ysidro and how that war continues to expand across the whole of Mexico and into the United States. What if I told you that one of the most horrific mass shootings in California history took place in a McDonald's? This isn't a tale of fast food gone wrong, but a chilling exploration into the mind of James Huberti, the man behind the Santa Cedro McDonald's massacre of 1984. We dissect the unfortunate series of events that occurred in his life, including his mother's abandonment, his battle with polio, and the incessant bullying he endured. We'll also delve into his struggle to secure employment, his history of domestic violence, and how a missed opportunity for help from a mental health clinic could have changed the course of history. Fasten your seatbelts as we transport you back to that fateful day on July 18th, 1984, when Huberti entered the McDonald's in San Ysidro. His weapon of choice? A deadly shotgun. His targets? Innocent civilians caught in a whirlwind of terror. The details are so gruesome that we'll take you through it with a blend of dark comedy, a delicacy of history, and a deep dive into the human psyche. Lastly, we tackle the topic of mental health, underlining its importance and the far-reaching consequences of neglecting it. Life is a precious commodity that we often take for granted. We'll emphasize the power of appreciation and remind you of the importance of seeking help, if and when it's needed. We've all heard it before - it's okay to not be okay.
