It's time for a critical reappraisal of President Carter. Joining me this week is Jim Barger, Jr., coauthor of the new book Jimmy Carter: River & Dreams, Rods, Reels, and Peace Deals, Plus the One that Got Away. Jim knew the late President and spoke about Jimmy Carter the angler, the environmentalist, and why he deserves another look. We also talk about Rosalynn, their relationship, and how fishing played into Carter's life in the White House and beyond. This is the conversation about a man sorely needed in the world right now.About the book:For more than half a century, and from Plains to Patagonia, Dr. Carlton Hicks fished with Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter, their group of loyal guides, and a merry band of best friends and anglers. In 12 stories set in 12 locations around the globe, Jim Barger Jr. and Hicks recount how President Carter and his lifelong friends changed the course of world history, all while casting flies and pursuing the perfect strike.About our guest:Jim Barger, Jr. is a nationally recognized trial lawyer who handles complex government investigations, particularly qui tam whistleblower litigation under the False Claims Act. Straight out of law school, Jim won a ground-breaking $2 million settlement against a major health insurance company employing a then-novel legal theory under the tort of outrage; two years later, he set the record for the largest qui tam case in Alabama history, winning $24.5 million from Southerncare. Jim holds the records for the largest home health fraud case in U.S. history, securing $150 million from Amedisys in 2014, and the largest hospice fraud case in U.S. history, securing $75 million from Vitas in 2017. Jim has served as lead trial counsel in more than 100 qui tam whistleblower cases across the country, has testified as a healthcare fraud expert in federal court, and regularly consults with companies on healthcare compliance issues. He has been quoted by The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, NPR, and CNN.

Wayne Harpster, owner of Harpster Farms in Huntingdon County, developed a friendship with the late President Jimmy Carter through their love of fly fishing. Harpster met Cater in 1978 at a Spruce Creek Rod and Gun Club member meet up. “I didn't know he was coming.” The former president arrived in his helicopter and landed on Harpster’s field. He offered to cut his fence so the president and first lady Rosalynn could get to the stream. However, the president did not allow him to do that. “I had barbed wire that separated the field that turned to the area where he was going to go fishing because wheat pasture cattle at that time. And I don't want them to cut their boots. So, I wanted to cut the barbed wire so they wouldn't cut our fishing boats. And they wouldn't let me do that. And they just crawled over the wall’.” When the day ended, Wayne was not sure that he’d see the president again, however his friendship lasted well over 40 years. “I didn't know if I'd ever see him again. But 12. For the next year. The time came again. And our friendship began.” Over the years, Harpster and Cater went on trips around the world that included Mexico and even China. “We had a lot in common. And so, we become more than just friends. We become buddies. And of course, we would do a lot of things together. We would shoot groundhogs in the summertime.” President Cater passed away at 100 years old died peacefully Sunday, Dec. 29, at his home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by his family. He was 100, the longest-lived president in U.S. history.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Today InPerspective with Dr. Harry Reeder January 6, 2025
On Sunday, former President Jimmy Carter died at age 100. He lived longer than any president and had the longest post-presidential life by far. Carter was a one-term president from 1977-1981. After surprising many by winning the Democratic nomination in 1976, he defeated President Gerald Ford in the general election. However, Carter suffered a resounding defeat in his bid for re-election. In 1980, he lost 44 states to Ronald Reagan, and Reagan won the Electoral College 489-49.As events soon begin to commemorate Carter's life and public service, Jim and Greg offer what they see as a fair but honest assessment of Carter, particularly during his time in the Oval Office.First, they highlight Carter's military service and his impressive victory as a dark horse candidate in 1976. They also discuss what they see as Carter's successes in the White House—both foreign and domestic—along with some notable achievements through the Carter Center after leaving office. They also applaud his example as a husband during his 77-year marriage to former First Lady Rosalynn Carter. However, the Carter presidency overall was not a success. Jim and Greg walk through Carter's failure to ward off the rise of a radical Islamist government in Iran, which then took dozens of Americans hostage for the next 14 and a half months and has fomented mayhem in the Middle East and beyond ever since. They also assess his weak approach to the communist threat in Central America and Afghanistan. Domestically, he oversaw a very rough economy, and Americans of a certain age will certainly remember gas lines and the energy crisis among other serious challenges. Finally, they look at his 44 years after leaving the presidency, from his work building homes for the needy to remaining very active in international affairs. But while he was convinced he was right, Carter's efforts sometimes created headaches for future administrations.

Former President Jimmy Carter passed away at the age of 100. He was a Nobel Peace Prize winner, Georgia governor, humanitarian, and devoted family person. In 1982, he founded The Carter Center with his beloved wife, Rosalynn, and through that organization they have provided humanitarian aid across the globe. Carter was also a poet in addition to his extensive list of achievements. “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes spoke with Carter in 1995 about his first poetry collection “Always a Reckoning.” Plus, we listen back to Lois’ conversation with the filmmakers behind “Jimmy Carter: Rock & Roll President.” And we revisit the documentary “Carterland.” See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Next month, New York will be the backdrop to an upcoming event meant to offer support to the campaign of the nation's current commander, President Joe Biden. Joining him will be two keystones of Democratic leadership, former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. While the exact place for this event remains undisclosed, the date is locked in for March 28, as indicated by press reports. Offering their backing and sharing this news publicly, Obama and Clinton alluded to their upcoming rendezvous for fundraising on their respective social network channels. The collection of former Democratic leaders is not complete, however. President Jimmy Carter, though alive, is unable to join. At 99 years old, he currently resides in a hospice in his home state of Georgia. Recalling times that the trio of Biden, Obama, and Clinton have been seen together in public highlights some of the nation's somber moments. One such instance occurred quite recently, when they gathered not for political purposes, but for the funeral of Carter's wife, Rosalynn, who passed away in November. On the fundraising front, Biden has been flexing his muscles. His efforts were particularly noticeable in December, which was followed by an announcement of hitting a high note in January. This was recorded as their best month since the campaign kick-started in April 2023, soaring past the commendable donations received in November and December of last year.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The incident occurred on October 29th at The Pier Bar on Baytree Place. Reports indicate that gunfire erupted outside the bar at 2:30 a.m., claiming the life of Brianna Long as she was finishing her work. Nonprofit Board Fires Sam Altman At OpenAI In High-Stakes Drama So, what happens when a nonprofit board meets with a Silicon Valley CEO? The two factions of OpenAI clashed like the resistance fighting the empire in a scene from Star Wars but with fewer special effects. Here's what we think is happening based on reports… OpenAI, initially a non-profit dedicated to beneficial AI development, has undergone a significant transformation via high-speed drama this weekend. After former CEO Sam Altman was ousted, executive Greg Brockman decided to quit OpenAI, with Twitch's ex-CEO Emmett Shear stepping in. Microsoft's Satya Nadella announced Altman and Brockman, along with others, would join Microsoft. This move represents a substantial gain for Microsoft, which already holds a perpetual license to OpenAI's intellectual property, and now acquires key talent without financial or antitrust risks. This shift signals a loss for OpenAI, heavily reliant on Microsoft for funding and resources. OpenAI's flagship product, ChatGPT may face uncertainties given these developments. Some observers critique the evolution of OpenAI's non-profit model, originally aimed at advancing AI for humanity's benefit without financial constraints. However, financial pressures led to the creation of OpenAI Global, LLC, with Microsoft as a minority owner, altering OpenAI's commitment to openness and non-profit principles. The release of ChatGPT, while a massive success, exacerbated internal ideological rifts within OpenAI that contributed to Altman's ouster. Microsoft, heavily invested in OpenAI technology, finds itself in a more advantageous position, now directly acquiring the talent and technology it was partnered with. Analysts suggest this to mean a consolidation of AI advancements under large, well-funded corporations, with OpenAI's original non-profit vision and structure becoming increasingly untenable. So for this episode the score is: nonprofit ethos 1, Silicon Valley CEO 0 - but this is definitely not the end of this saga, expect many sequels and prequels. Billionaires including Eric Schmidt plow $300 million into a non-profit that is France's latest push to catch up in AI | Fortune The new French AI research lab Kyutai, backed by a budget of nearly €300 million (around $330 million), is set to make significant strides in artificial intelligence. Spearheaded by French billionaire Xavier Niel and supported by figures like Rodolphe Saadé and Eric Schmidt, Kyutai aims to be a nonprofit hub for artificial general intelligence research, collaborating with researchers and PhD students on open-source projects. The lab boasts considerable compute power, including a thousand Nvidia H100 GPUs, and is led by a team of seasoned AI experts. It distinguishes itself by encouraging researchers to publish their work, a practice increasingly rare in big tech firms. This initiative aligns with France's broader strategy on AI, as articulated by President Emmanuel Macron, focusing on open source development as a national asset and advocating for regulations that ensure safety and innovation in AI applications. Rosalynn Carter, mental health activist, humanitarian and former first lady, dies at 96 | CNN Rosalynn Carter, who passed away at 96, was a trailblazing First Lady, redefining the role by actively championing mental health reform and advocating for human rights. Her tireless work set a new precedent for presidential spouses, emphasizing social impact and public service.
