On October 7th 2020, after years of struggling with back pain, truck driver Nick Murray had spinal surgery. Unfortunately, for Nick, post surgery and literally overnight, he found himself without the ability to walk.    On the 30th of November 2020, in the height of the pandemic, Nick was transferred to the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoighre, Dublin for intense rehab. There, separated from his wife Carol and their 4 children, he began the fight of his life to regain independence.   Months of hard work and an incredible response to a go fund me campaign to help adjust to his new reality saw him eventually able to return home and begin a new chapter.  Yesterday Sally-Ann Barrett sat down with 47 year old Nick Murray and his wife Carol at their home near Abbeyknockmoy to hear how like so many wheelchair users Nick is facing an everyday battle to maintain the independence he fought so hard to regain.

Project Empower sees two Irish men attempt to break a 124-year-old world record, of rowing from New York to Galway. Damian Browne and Fergus Gussy Farrell will set off on the challenge of a lifetime. These men have faced many challenges already. Damian is an adventurer and explorer who began a lifetime of exploration which has seen him summit 5 of 7 peaks, complete the Race De Sables and he was a guest of mine in Season 1 where we spoke about his solo Atlantic row and how challenging environments create the greatest opportunities for growth.  Gussy was given a 5% chance to walk again following a work accident, now he is attempting to break a world record having walked across Ireland from his home town in Athenry to the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire a year to the day after his injury.  Part 1 of this 2 part episode highlights how powerful the mind can be when focused and given purpose. Gussy's story may not be as well known as Damian, yet it is truly miraculous how he went from moving his big toe to walking cross country.  The learning I took from this is never to give in, and to fuel your mind with purpose so it can heal you and your body.  The guys require your support to make this world record attempt possible. In the 12th Episode of the Postural Restoration Podcast I am joined by Louise Kelley, DPT, PRC who currently practices out of Rockville, MD. Louise began her career in movement and science as an avid runner and ran throughout her formidable years and throughout college. It wasn't until rehabbing an injury with an Athletic Trainer that Louise became interested in movement science and athletic medicine. Although she was a Premed student at the time, she had little interest in becoming an MD and spent many years volunteering and ingraining herself in various sports medicine settings. She later attended Emory University where she earned her Masters of Physical Therapy in 1989. Louise enjoyed the neurological approach to learning that they offered as well as learning about various methodology such as NDT, PNF, Brunnstrom and a heavy focus on chest Physical Therapy of all things! Louise has always been a life long learner and eventually returned to PT school over two decades later, to earn her Doctorate of Physical Therapy. This allowed Louise not only to earn the most current degree in PT but also gave her an appreciation for how the practice was currently being taught.Louise started her career working for the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Washington, D.C. and spent many years with "NRH" in a vast array of settings. Her mentor Jan Dommerholt would eventually ask her to take part in several program developments and her time with NRH led to time treating many subsets of patients including, prenatal, singers, dancers, time in a post polio outpatient clinic, and a lymphedema program among many others. Her first PRI exposure was during a Phil Donnelly course in which PRI was mentioned. After discovering Ron Hruska's article on the "Tri-Planar Influences of the Hamstring" she was hooked. Her co-worker at the time, Cindy Anderson, took Myokinematic Restoration and shared her discoveries from the course upon returning to the clinic. Finally Louise attended her first course in 2007 in Lancaster, PA with James Anderson. Coincidentally Mike Cantrell was also in attendance and provided a welcome surprise as Louise and Mike were part of the same graduating class at Emory. After being exposed to PRI Louise incorporated concepts into several new outpatient settings and although she was able to see a wide ranging clientele she was limited in how she was able to use the science.Louise became Postural Restoration Certified in 2011 after attending Advanced Integration and feeling ready to further her PRI journey. Shortly after Louise became more involved with the institute through helping Julie Blandin structure and piece together parts of the PRI Integration for Fitness and Movement material. Through this process she was recognized for her dedication and passion for the science and later was asked to become part of the PRI Faculty teaching Postural Respiration. Eventually Louise started her own practice, "Kelley PT" in 2017 and has been able to implement PRI with all her patients since. Louise continues to remain active in various running communities and plans to continue to train for the World Masters Championship in 2022.

Welcome to Episode #24 of the Princeton Spine and Joint Center Podcast. In this episode Dr. Scott Curtis, Sports Medicine Director at Princeton Spine and Joint Center, sat down with Dr. Greg Kelley, Princeton Spine & Joint Center's newest physician. Dr. Kelley joined PS&J Center from the Georgetown Hospital System, where he specialized in musculoskeletal medicine. Scott and Greg had an in-depth conversation about Elbow Pain. They discussed the general approach they take with patients with elbow pain, the different pathologies, the different diagnostic tests and different treatment plans for individuals with elbow pain. Greg Kelley, MD is a board certified physical medicine and rehabilitation physician specializing in the care of patients with musculoskeletal and rehabilitation issues. After graduating cum laude from Georgetown University, Dr. Kelley completed his medical school training at St. George’s University School of Medicine before returning to Georgetown University in Washington D.C. and the National Rehabilitation Hospital for his specialty training in physical medicine and rehabilitation. Dr. Kelley has spearheaded the implementation of the Rehabilitation and Performance Centers of Excellence in local subacute nursing facilities in the Princeton area. He lectures and publishes widely on issues concerning the management and alleviation of patients’ pain. He also seeks to maximize each person’s potential toward the goal of achieving personal peak performance. He emphasizes that achieving peak performance clearly varies among patient populations – professional athletes have different specific expectations than geriatric patients with heart or lung disease. But, at the end of the day, everyone strives to be the best version of themselves that they possibly can and it is in that pursuit that Dr. Kelley finds purpose and passion in his work helping people. Scott Curtis, DO Director of Sports Medicine at Princeton Spine and Joint Center Dr. Scott Curtis is a board certified, fellowship trained physician who specializes in the care of sports related injuries and general musculoskeletal care. After attending Penn State University, Dr. Curtis received his medical degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and then completed his residency at Morristown Medical Center in Morristown, NJ where he was honored to serve as Chief Resident. Dr. Curtis completed the renowned Sports Medicine Fellowship at Atlantic Sports Health where he worked with the New York Jets, Seton Hall University Athletics, College of St. Elizabeth Athletics and various high school teams. From weekend warriors to professional athletes, high school athletes to 90+ year old tennis players, Dr. Curtis has a singular focus to treat each patient as an individual, identify their concerns as well as their specific goals and help them reach their aspirations using the most effective non-surgical care options.

Approximately 1.7 million each year sustain a traumatic brain injury. Superstar snowboarder, Kevin Pearce, suffered one on a practice run preparing for the 2010 Winter Olympics. Kevin, along with his brother, Adam, called the show to discuss their story and their new mission. I was on this super clear path to be a professional snowboarder, and to be one of the best in the world. —Kevin Pearce   On December 31, 2009, while training for the Olympic trials in Park City, Utah, Kevin suffered a severe traumatic brain injury. Although wearing a helmet at the time, the injury left Kevin in critical condition and in a medically induced coma. His recovery—and his journey to accept his new life—was chronicled in the HBO documentary, “The Crash Reel." Kevin emerged as a passionate advocate for the prevention of brain injuries and the promotion of a brain healthy lifestyle. Along with his brother, Adam, Kevin co-founded the Love Your Brain Foundation(Loveyourbrain.com). Their mission is to prevent brain injuries, support brain injury recovery and promote brain health. Kevin is a Sports Ambassador for the National Down Syndrome Society.  He credits his brother David, (born with Down syndrome), as a huge influence in his life and career.  In addition, Kevin is the 2014 recipient of The Dana and Christopher Reeve Inspiration Award from Craig Hospital.  Furthermore, he received The Victory Award (2011) from The National Rehabilitation Hospital in Washington, DC. I asked Adam Pearce to share one thing he would say to a family who just experienced a traumatic brain injury.  He recalled the advice given to his family by one of Kevin's physicians. If you could think about being in the woods. Instead of thinking as if you are going to walk out of the woods—the woods become less dense. It Takes a Lot of Patience and Support "Understand that this is a long journey, and one that really  takes a lot of patience and support."   [In addition,] it requires the coming together of your community to support this.  Because it is a long one and that's the reality of it. —Adam Pearce Adam also offered comments about the impact of Traumatic Brain Injury on family relationships. "It definitely puts some strain on those relationships.  But I think with good communications and just the right support, I think it makes those easier. But in the end, it has the ability to bring you closer to family and that loved one going through it.   About Peter Rosenberger Peter Rosenberger, a thirty-year caregiver, is the author of Hope for the Caregiver.   Peter hosts a weekly radio show for caregivers on 1510 WLAC, broadcast Sunday’s at 3 PM CST.  In addition,  Peter serves as the president and co-founder of Standing With Hope.
