Bruce Schutter struggled with Bipolar, Alcoholism and GAD, until he discovered mental health is the key to triumphing over any life challenge! He created the Mental Health Warrior Program, a grass roots approach to Mental Health, a journey of Self-Help and Empowerment. We teach everybody to be Mental Health Warriors. Bruce Schutter Vroom Vroom Veer Stories Volunteered as an EMT while in High School; used CPR on someone; when that person died; naturally Bruce fell into depression but didn't have to tools to deal with grief Bruce leaned into trying to help people and got his EMT certification working as a volunteer; which added to an already stressful life Bruce was feeling many unwanted emotions and didn't know how to process those feeling; so he turned to alcohol to avoid the pain Got a job in IT, but he really struggled with the emotions related to work life, used shopping and alcohol to ease the pain and looked right from the outside After several short stays in jail for drinking, was twice placed on a 3-day psych hold and could barely get through each day as they seemed meaningless One day attempted suicide but survived; this was a turning point where he realized he needed help Desperately seeking answers and relief he went to meetings, doctors, took meds, and tried everything offered but still was left without any control of my life. He realized during this period that his Mental Health was what he need to embrace and nurture instead of avoid He realized he feared "feeling" of his own emotions because would lose control Bruce learned manage his emotions and becoming comfortable with them. This allowed him to stay in control of the day and take the steps needed to triumph over my life's challenges. Learned there are foods to avoid to improve mental health; processed foods, processed sugar, reduced carbs Connections Website

Hopefully, I will help you to identify your own personal needs and how you can bring out the Mental Health Warrior in yourself.

We have been so lucky to meet a few true Mental Health Warriors on the podcast to date and Gus is absolutely one of them. Gus Worland - Media personality from Sydney who has been all over the Australian TV & Radio landscape AND has been a part of some incredible advocacy projects in the Mental Health space, or 'Mental Fitness' as he puts it in the episode. Gus' goal is simple, yet so important. Get the suicide rate in this country to zero. In his work over the years of trying to achieve this goal, the overwhelming truth is that suicide is a death of loneliness - His organisation Gotcha4life talks about finding those few "gotcha for life" friends that you can absolutely lean on and be your most open and vulnerable self with and how powerful that can be against the nasty business of loneliness. We LOVE what Gus is about and this is a power-round of a chat, covering all this and more. We hope you enjoy! MOW. Content Warning: In this chat we talk about topics that people may find difficult to listen to & we want people to be aware of that as they listen. We hope that if anyone feels the need to talk, there is support available 24/7. Lifeline - 13 11 14 Suicide Call Back Service - 1300 659 467

When Sasha Wolff discovered the benefits of running for mental health, she wanted to connect with others who did the same thing. She couldn't find an existing group, so she created her own, Still I Run. What began as a Facebook page and website is now a non-profit charity and a community of runners over 16,000 strong. “The biggest stat out there is one in five Americans will be diagnosed every single year with a mental illness.” Even if you're not affected, the odds are that you know somebody who is. Mental illness doesn't discriminate. “Mental illness doesn't care where you are in life,” Sasha says. “It doesn't care how happy you are. It just happens. It's like when you get a cold out of the blue or you break your leg unexpectedly, or you have a heart attack. You don't plan for those things, they just happen.” “Once I finally started taking that proactive approach, that's when things started to get better for me.” When Sasha was first diagnosed with depression, she was given a prescription for Prozac and sent on her way. That didn't work, and since then she's learned the necessity of proactively managing mental health. She has three tools in her mental health toolbox: running, medication, and therapy. “I'm hoping that this conversation really explodes into something bigger because we need the support system now.” Alexi Pappas was one of the first professional athletes to discuss mental health. Simone Biles and Naomi Osaka raised awareness further when they stepped away from competition this year. Sasha applauds them: “I think when you have voices like that come forward, it inspires others to come forward, which is why I've decided to be vulnerable about my own story because you hope it at least helps one other person.” “It does kind of help you feel like you're part of something larger than yourself.” The Starting Line Scholarship helps people overcome the barriers they may have to running. “So our hope,” Sasha says, “is that by awarding this scholarship, we're giving you all the tools that you need to get started with this lifelong habit of running for mental health.” “Lead with empathy.” Sasha realizes that “it's really hard to understand mental illness because it's not something you can see. It's not something you can really understand unless you talk to someone who may have a mental health disorder.” The best thing that you can do if you know someone with a mental illness is to be empathetic. If you're struggling yourself, know that you're not alone. RESOURCES: Still I Run website Run.Write.Fight. On this weeks episode of the podcast Matt sat down and spoke with former professional boxer Steve Ormand. Steve talked about his love for boxing and how boxing's been part of my life since I was about four years of age. His father Patrick was an All Ireland amateur lightweight champion and my grandfather and several uncles on both sides of the family were boxers, so he grew up listening to all the stories about boxing. Steve's uncle Greg was a boxing coach, so he first went to the boxing gym at the age of six or seven and had his first amateur bout around the age of 11. For Jason MacKenzie everything was going as planned. He had a great job, a beautiful wife, two kids, a nice house, and a nice car. So, how did he one day find himself, widowed, and drinking until he passed out (again) on his couch, while his heartbroken 9-year-old daughter played on the floor alone? On this episode of The Man Rules podcast, Jason explains how he radically changed his life by stepping outside of his alpha male persona and embracing his long-hidden emotionality, sensitivity, and creativity through vulnerability. You'll learn more about his mission to help other men discover the power of emotion through his Mental Health Warriors project and hear his Practical and Tactical Tips for living a more authentic life. He and Dan also discuss the differences between the problematic use of alcohol and addiction, and paths available to recovery. Practical and Tactical Tips There is so much knowledge and wisdom to be gained through your emotions. Allow yourself to feel every single one. You don't have to let them dictate your decisions in order to learn from them. Be willing to share your story in order to help others. This doesn't mean that you have no boundaries and share anything and everything and with anyone and everyone. It means that you recognize when someone is struggling, and offer to share your story if you think it will help them. When you start to step into your emotions, you are going to create opportunities for yourself that you've never even imagined before. Learn to embrace those opportunities and to learn from disappointment and failure. Bonus: If you'd like to talk to someone about what you're going through right now, you can book a complimentary two-hour conversation with Jason at MentalHealthWarriors.com. “IT'S AMAZING HOW FAR YOU CAN GO WHEN SOMEONE BELIEVES IN YOU”~~Jason MacKenzie Through what lens are you looking through? Some of us have had our perspectives altered throughout time, and through time the lens which we view our lives and purpose have become clouded. That which seems clear, becomes unclear. That which was once understood becomes questionable as our vision and sight towards the world strays away from that which we've imagined it to be. How do we handle life when the person we've married is not the person we've imagined them to be? How do we comprehend when the person we once loved with all our heart has chosen to leave this world at their choosing? How do we truly find ourselves when the ‘bottle' has an influence over our false perception of self control and we become one that disappoints rather than having been disappointed? There will be times when we feel small and fool ourselves to be some sort of hero. The truth is, there is always hope to create change in self to find that inner power….. And stand tall to the true warrior that exists inside!! Jason MacKenzie shares his powerful story and his inner battles as he's taken the dark times in his life to shed light upon others! In doing so, Jason is “serving powerfully” as he extends his heart and a hand to help other men battle in strengthening their own mental health.
