In episode four, Palestinian storyteller Sarah Abu-Sharar joins us for our third annual Mouth Open Story Jump Out episode. Through Palestinian folktales and stories of her father, she reflects on the meaning and power of stories within Palestinian resilience, recuperation and resistance. Reflection on her journey into storytelling, Abu-Sharar says: “When I started storytelling, it had to be for Palestine because it was reclaiming my identity. It was a way of saying, the Occupation might have deprived me of my land, of my culture, but I will resist by telling our stories.” About today's guest: Sarah Abu-Sharar comes from a long line of storytellers on her paternal side. She tells stories to both adults and children. Abu-Sharar has told stories both nationally and internationally at festivals in Canada, Italy, Croatia, Bosnia, Tunisia, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates. Because Abu-Sharar grew up in several countries she tells stories from all over the world with the focus on Palestinian and Croatian stories where her roots lie. Her favourite stories are ones that promote social change. She has also used stories in a therapeutic way with children in refugee camps and refugee children in Toronto, as part of their therapy. She works at the Parent Child Mother Goose Program using traditional storytelling to encourage parent child bonding. Abu-Sharar belongs to a collective called "Musical Story Studio" where stories and music are combined. She tells stories so that she may go deep inside of the tales and find herself in far away magical places that she remembers, from long, long ago. In this episode, Dr. Aria talks about her heinously triggering last few weeks. She's talked before about "let your breakdowns be your breakthroughs", and that theme shines through here as well. However, sometimes we can't prepare for how difficult some seasons of the healing journey might be. They can leave us feeling defeated and as though we failed. Send us a Text Message. This week I dive back into some philosophical theory related to why we are so prone to struggle with anxiety, addiction and alienation in today's world. Guy Debord wrote The Society of the Spectacle more than 50 years ago, and in it he explained the current state of so-called "Western Cultures" as having moved from the importance of being to a culture where the importance is on having, and eventually, on to the importance being placed on appearance only (to appear to own something by snapping a photo is good enough). As a culture, we are now completely preoccupied with and focused on the spectacle, not the real. It's more important to change your Facebook banner to an LGBTQ+ flag on the right day to show your support than it is to support LGBTQ+ people in your heart. It's more important to be seen as having the perfect family or the perfect life than it is to actually build the perfect family or the perfect life. Some people drive $60k cars and live in crumbling homes. In today's cultural setting, a reputation for success requires the complete abandonment of one's personal identity in exchange for the stock characteristics that the audience wants in a performer — whether Marylin Manson actually drinks blook or Ozzy Osborn actually worships the devil doesn't matter. Only the spectacle of performance is valued.I also cover Marx's theory of capitalism increasing alienation, the Frankfurt School's and the Situationists' (many of the same people) work on how Marx's world of commodity fetishism expanded to spectacle fetishism (the appearance came to be more important than the real), and Debord's (and re-Marx's) concept of magic properties bestowed upon commodities if producers can manage to hide the actual process of manufacturing from the public. “Types of Affair Relationships You might hear an affair being referred to as a romantic affair, an emotional affair, or even a cyber affair. Some people simply call it being unfaithful or cheating, though variations of the term "affair" have been adopted by some in consensually nonmonogamous relationships as well. Common types of affairs include the following. Romantic Affair Affairs may be romantic, which can be referred to as an "affair of the heart." Romantic affairs are commonly in the form of sexual liaisons that include some level of romance and emotional attachment. When agreed to by both parties in a relationship, the term may also be used to describe a form of non-monogamy, though this is less common. Casual Affair A casual affair is most commonly considered a mainly physical sexual relationship between two people without the expectation of a more formalized romantic relationship. It may also be referred to as a "fling." Emotional Affair A platonic or nonsexual relationship may also be considered an affair. An emotional affair lacks sexual intimacy but has intense or enduring emotional intimacy. Emotional affairs can easily evolve into sexual affairs and be just as threatening to the primary relationship. Even when this type of affair doesn't cross the line into becoming physical, the impact can be just as detrimental. The intimacy involved in emotional affairs can often be deeper and more intense than the intimacy in a solely sexual affair. Cyber Affair An online or cyber affair is one that occurs online via chat, webcam, email, or text. It may be anonymous, or it may be between people who only know basic information about one another, such as their names, but have never met. Or it may occur online with someone the person knows in real life. Quite often, a cyber affair has emotional and/or sexual undertones.2 The partners involved in a cyber affair may never meet in person, but the emotional connection and often sensual nature of the affair can strain the committed relationships that one or both of the affair participants are in. Sanctioned Affair The term "affair" might also be used to describe part of an agreement within an open marriage or relationship. With a sanctioned affair, a couple agrees upon which forms of sex or emotional intimacy are permitted with someone other than their primary partner. These may include swinging, dating, polyamory, and ménages à trois or group sex.3 An open marriage or consensual nonmonogamy that works for both parties has to play by the rules that they agreed upon at the start. Otherwise, this type of affair is no longer "sanctioned." -https://www.verywellmind.com/marriage-affair-2303083 --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

Embracing Spontaneity: Navigating Life with a Sassy Twist in Las VegasLas Vegas, a city synonymous with spontaneity and live entertainment, offers a unique backdrop for life's unpredictable moments. In this city, known more for its glittering Strip and 24/7 lifestyle, two hosts, Mike and Torya, navigate through the turns of daily living with a distinct blend of sarcastic humor and practical wisdom. Through their experiences, we delve into themes that resonate with anyone looking to find joy and balance amidst the chaos of the modern world.Key Takeaways:Patience is key when unexpected situations, like falling ill, disrupt everyday life.Las Vegas enables a lifestyle of spontaneity with a plethora of entertainment options.Taking breaks and engaging in hobbies are essential for personal growth and mental health.Overcoming Setbacks with Humor and PatienceLife often throws curveballs, and how we handle them can have a lasting impact on our trajectory. When Torya fell ill at the start of 2024, it was a reminder of life's unpredictability. Despite the sickness taking a toll on both hosts, they weathered it with sarcasm and patience, underscoring the belief that everything eventually aligns again, no matter the obstacle."So we figured out that you had the flu. Do you know how ironic it would have been for the second December in a row to come home from eggworks and do a COVID test and be positive?" (Mike, [0:01:36])This candid discussion illustrates the importance of acceptance and adaptability. Their approach also touches on a broader societal trend: with increasing life pressures, fostering a sense of humor and cultivating patience are vital skills for maintaining resilience. The Merits of Spontaneity in a City Built for EntertainmentIn a metropolis with endless possibilities, Mike and Torya outline the appeal of Las Vegas's entertainment scene. What stands out is the city's ingrained culture of spontaneity—whether it's the ease of attending live music events or the impulsive decision to enjoy a local sport."We don't have to plan hours of travel time before and after… If we want to go see our favorite velvet Elvis, there's multiple locations we can go see them at, too." (Torya, [0:08:28])The allure of spontaneity reflects the hosts' personal preferences and suggests a broader societal shift where people increasingly value experiences that require minimal planning. Living in a city that accommodates spur-of-the-moment decisions can be liberating and empowering, something that residents and visitors of Las Vegas know all too well.Importance of Recuperation and Engaging in HobbiesThe discussion naturally evolves into the significance of taking breaks and the rejuvenating power of hobbies. Mike's revelation about his improved guitar skills after taking time off is emblematic of the necessity for rest periods in an ongoing process."I went more than a year without a real break… And then I came back, and I played two days ago, and I couldn't believe, like, my master of puppets was up, like, by 10%, speed wise." (Mike, [0:15:54])This underscores a fundamental truth: scheduled downtime and engaging in preferred activities aren't just leisurely pastimes; they're integral to productivity and creativity. Whether it's playing guitar, quilting, or another pursuit, hobbies serve as a critical counterbalance to the demands of our daily lives.Mike and Torya conclude their conversation with a shared sentiment that the start of their year, though less than ideal, still promises a fulfilling time ahead. They champion a philosophy suggesting embracing life's challenges, interacting with one's surroundings spontaneously, and the integral role of hobbies in our well-being. Through their experiences, it's clear that whether you're overcoming adversity, reveling in the delight of serendipity, or seeking solace in personal interests, a measured response and a dash of good humor are the perfect companions on the journey through life.TimestampSummary0:00:15Welcome to the nightly rant with your hosts, Mike and Toria.0:00:29Did the year start like a nightmare?0:01:18Torya gets the flu after eating at Egg Works.0:02:08Mike also gets the flu after watching a game with a friend.0:03:45It took over two weeks for them to feel better.0:05:11Mike feels like himself again.0:06:23They reflect on their time in Vegas.0:07:14They appreciate the spontaneity and convenience of living in Vegas.0:08:15They discuss the ease of attending events and concerts in Vegas.0:09:23They compare the traffic in Vegas to LA.0:09:52Watching Road Wars and witnessing a massive car accident0:10:30Discussion about bad drivers in Las Vegas0:11:24Encounter with a convoy of eleven police cars0:12:55Affordable travel options to and from Las Vegas0:13:38Interest in the local music scene0:15:00Taking breaks to improve guitar skills0:16:14Difficulty in making friends in Las Vegas0:17:40Promotion of Thought Merch, a sassy merch shop0:17:59Closing remarks and podcast credits

Leaders are more effective when they stop thinking about work after hours. This is also true for teachers. Maxine discusses research, considering what gets in the way of achieving this, how teachers and leaders can best switch of and asking why some teachers and school leaders might be reluctant to speak openly about this.

Voici le 5e épisode de la 2e saison de La Bande à D+ animé par Nicolas Fréret avec :
Recently our two little dogs Mochi and Beansprout have been burning the candle at both ends. No matter how late at night I take them out for their last bathroom visit, they still wake me up between 5:45 and 6:15 in the morning for another trip. It's left me feeling oddly disconnected when I start my work for the day, almost as though my brain is struggling to get into gear.I've had many times in my career where pressure of work has caused me to compromise on sleep. Then one of my coachees introduced me to the idea of time budgeting. She allocates her time through the week to all the activities she needs to do, including sleeping and self-care, and she leaves some in reserve for those unexpected things that always crop up. It's helped her to regain control of her schedule.--Dr Gary Crotaz, PhD: https://garycrotaz.com

I am officially in my introvert recoup era. After what feels like a month of talking to people nonstop, I've decided I only want to talk to you guys for the foreseeable future. AND YOUR GIRL HAS THINGS TO SAY. In this episode, I vented to Catherine about oh-so-many things. We gave advice and shared our missteps when trying to leave a conversation that has expired. We dissected my belief of what a good first date looks like and which common dating experience would be my personal version of hell. We compared notes on the statute of limitations for late birthday presents, unlocked the truth behind “good sides”, and examined my crippling fear of the dark. ALSO: this message goes out to my VPR fans and VPR fans only…we recorded this episode BEFORE the Scandoval so just know next week I will go IN on all my thoughts and feelings regarding the news that shook me to my core!!! In this two part episode of the Courage My Friends podcast, Telling Black histories: writing, recuperation and resistance, we are very pleased to welcome the 4th Poet Laureate of Toronto and the 7th Canadian Parliamentary Poet Laureate, George Elliott Clarke. As we continue our conversation, Clarke reflects on past and current struggles against White western power, the meaning of decolonization and shaping effective resistance in Canada and beyond. Clarke discusses ongoing legacies of colonialism and racist imperialism in global politics,: “As Malcolm X said, ‘"you're a bunch of hypocrites'"...At the same time as you're expressing all these nostrums and parables of your supposed virtues, you are armed to the teeth. You are armed to the teeth! You are building jails to house masses of people seeking relief from the oppression that you have engineered in their home countries… And then these oppressed peoples flee for the refuge of your democracy and your attitude is to let them drown in the Mediterranean. .. let them drown in the Atlantic.”. For Clarke, achieving real change in Canada is very much in our hands: “We want to end police killings of unarmed Black men and Indigenous men and women and youth? Oh, we can do that, but we're gonna have to vote in place governments that will put in place very strict regiments on police forces..Whatever it is that you, the people together, collectively want in a democracy, you can have it. ..You can have an end to war. You can have more distribution of income and wealth. In a democracy you can actually vote yourselves this…So what's stopping us? Well, actually nothing is stopping us, except our own blind obedience to the way things have always been.” Speaking to the failures of “cancel culture”, Clarke says: “The woke/cancelers have power to destroy individuals, which they can do, and they've done it. ..On the other hand, as they have also proven, they cannot destroy oppressive institutions. How nice it would be if they could, but they don't have that ability. They can destroy individuals, but not institutions. I think that's a problem.Because to go after individuals, any mob can do that. But to go after institutions, a mob isn't what you need. You need a revolutionary movement”. About today's guest The 4th Poet Laureate of Toronto (2012-15) and the 7th Parliamentary/Canadian Poet Laureate (2016-17), George Elliott Clarke was born in Windsor, Nova Scotia, in 1960. This week we are talking about our freedom as men. Men often long for freedom but what does it look like? We are going to use a specific definition of a free man in our discussions today: FREE MAN - A MAN WHO LIVES HIS FULL POTENTIAL Free men live better lives and make a positive difference in the world, but it doesn't come easy. Today we are going to discuss the battles that all of us face as men when seeking to live free. Men Battle an Inner Drive for Comfort Comfort can cause us to stop moving toward our full potential Our desire for comfort is us rewarding ourselves and saying "we deserve this" Our purpose should be the driver of our life and not the desire for comfort We lose freedom when we start to make decisions based on what is easy and not what is right We have to be careful as men and watch to make sure that our drive has not become comfort-based and not purposed based Men Battle the Casualties of War Getting hurt is a part of life The emotional hurts are the hardest ones to overcome Many men get hurt emotionally and they check out of life By doing this they are willingly giving up on the freedom that comes with living their full potential Dealing with hurts is learning to process them Men Battle the Fatigue of the Fight The military calls it R&R = Rest and Recuperation; Rest and Recreation; Rest and Rehabilitation We must take fatigue seriously What is Rest? What is Recuperation (Recreation) R&R is our responsibility as men We also have to balance them with our roles as husbands, dads, workers, etc...
