In today's episode of Future Tech I talk about virtual reality. In 2014, Facebook acquired the virtual reality company Oculus for $2 Billion. At one point I bought an Oculus Rift VR headset to see what all the hype was about, and I wrote an article about it. More recently, I noticed in the news that VR has become more popular. With people being stuck in quarantine during the pandemic, VR helped them escape to other parts of the world. But what other things can VR help humans do? Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality have been around for years, and billions have been spent on popularising them, so far to little avail. Ed Butler dons an Oculus Rift at London's Natural History Museum to experience a VR journey through its collection, and speaks to John Casey, chief executive of Factory 42, which designed the experience. But despite big investments by the likes of Google, Facebook, Imax, Disney and others, sales of VR and AR headsets are still a fraction of traditional gaming consoles such as Sony PlayStation. Jeremy Dalton, who heads the AR/VR team at consultancy PwC, says that's about to change. But Stephanie Riggs, author of “The End of Storytelling", says that first content producers need to get out of their comfort zone of traditional narrative telling, and embrace AI-generated stories. He doesn't see social media a barrier to personal interaction. He makes a great point about social media training us to filter out the bad and only share the best images and experiences. We can curate the information we are interested in but we can also curate ourselves, what the outside world sees. Louis says it's good news for cyber security companies with all the news stories of hacks and data breaches seemingly not stopping in the news. Louis thinks companies will have to keep increasing their budgets for cyber security protection and thinks there's a large bull market there will lots of good investments. Jason then asks Louis about virtual reality and the Oculus Rift VR headset that will be included in X Box One. Louis thinks VR headsets will be used for more than just next generation video games. Drones, Driver-less Cars, Bitcoin and the Block Chain technology are also discussed and Jason wraps up the interview by asking Louis what are some his his favorite most disruptive technologies for the next five years? Louis says we will be harnessing Nicola Tesla's technology to charge wirelessly from 10-30 feet away in as soon as 1-2 years.
