On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by PK from Buffalo Sports Collective to discuss several Buffalo sports topics, including assigning a grade to some storylines going on this week at Buffalo Bills OTA's.Voluntary, and the word voluntary needs to be emphasized, practices are going on at One Bills Drive this week. While in the grand scheme of things practices in May almost always amount to nothing, there's certainly some storylines worth discussing and that's exactly what Patrick and PK do. Patrick tasks PK with discussing and grading on a scale of 1-10 a handful of topics noticed and reported by the media. Among them are Joey Bosa injuring his calf muscle during a workout last week, James Cook being the lone player absent from OTA's, Keon Coleman reportedly looking bulkier, new wide receiver Elijah Moore flying around and Tre White looking like he never left. Also, PK shares his feelings about the Bills being featured on HBO's Hard Knocks this summer and of course, the Hallmark holiday Christmas movie revolving around the Bills.Of course, PK does an outstanding job co-hosting Buffalo Sports Collective, which gives incredibly comprehensive coverage of the Buffalo Bandits and PK's got plenty of feelings about the Bandits winning a third consecutive NLL championship this past Saturday in front of their home crowd at the Key Bank Center. You can follow PK on Twitter @PK_BSC and check out the Buffalo Sports Collective podcast.Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red's at 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium. At No. 30 overall, the Buffalo Bills selected Kentucky cornerback Max Hairston. His services are most certainly required. This is a defense in need of a corner capable of sticking with receivers step for step in the playoffs. Nobody ran faster than Hairston at the NFL Combine, and scouts describe him as mentally tough — “a cocky little guy” who's “electric as far as change of direction, movement, speed.” The 5-foot-11, 183-pounder had 89 tackles, six interceptions, three pick-sixes and 10 passes defensed in 20 games the last two seasons. He's got limitations physically. The Bills needed to step outside of their comfort zone with this pick and we'll explore more in full later. Here's a quick chat on Substack Live with WGRZ's Jon Scott into the wee hours at One Bills Drive. The Automotive Troublemaker w/ Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier
Shoot us a Text.On this Thursday, we're covering how EV/hydrogen truck maker Nikola is filing for bankruptcy, how West Herr Auto Group gifted Slick Rick from the Buffalo Bills mailroom a car, and how kids meals are becoming something everyone orders.Electric truck startup Nikola, once a Wall Street darling valued higher than Ford, has filed for bankruptcy, joining other EV-makers like Fisker, Lordstown Motors and Electric Last Mile Solutions.Founded in 2015, Nikola promised a hydrogen-fueled revolution for trucking, securing billions in investments from GM, Bosch, and others. In 2020, short-seller Hindenburg Research accused Nikola of faking its truck technology, revealing a promotional video showing a truck rolling downhill with no powertrain.Founder Trevor Milton resigned amid fraud allegations and was later convicted in 2022, receiving a four-year prison sentence.Despite shifting focus to hydrogen fuel cell trucks, Nikola produced only 235 vehicles, amidst supply chain issues, rising costs, and an underdeveloped hydrogen fueling network.CEO Steve Girsky blamed economic conditions, stating, “Our very best efforts have not been enough to overcome these significant challenges.”When quarterback Josh Allen gave his MVP acceptance speech last week, he made sure to shout out someone who rarely gets the spotlight—Roderick “Slick Rick” Morrow, a beloved mailroom employee at One Bills Drive. After Allen's speech, Buffalo fans quickly fell in love with Slick Rick. One detail caught everyone's attention: despite working for the Bills for over a decade, Rick had been taking the bus to work every day.West Herr Automotive Group knew they couldn't just stand by on the sidelines, and on Valentine's Day, they surprised Slick Rick with a Chevy Traverse—his very own set of wheels after years of relying on public transportation.“It feels like I'm living the dream, and I am!” Rick said, soaking in all the love from the Buffalo community. As fast-food prices continue to skyrocket, some savvy consumers have found a way to save money—by ordering kids' meals. The trend has surged in popularity, with many adults opting for smaller portions at lower prices, sometimes even enjoying the bonus of a toy.Data from Circana shows a 28% increase in adults ordering kids' meals in 2024 compared to 2019.Fast-food prices have surged by 39%-100% over the past decade, outpacing inflation (31%), with McDonald's, Popeyes, and Taco Bell leading the way.Social media influencers, such as TikTok's “kids' meal connoisseur” Ashley Garrett, have fueled the trend by reviewing and rating kids' meals.Restaurant investor Dan Rowe suggests the issue isn't adults ordering kids' meals but rather, “If people are ordering off of your kids' menu, you have other issues.”The rise of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy, which reduce appetite, could also be contributing to the demand for smaller portion sizes.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email
Chris and Steve send it to One Bills Drive as HC Sean McDermott speaks with the media
On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Batavia Daily News sports editor Alex Brasky to go over several critical points one more time before the Buffalo Bills take on the Baltimore Ravens in elimination playoff football Sunday, including examining how much of a legacy game this is for Bills head coach Sean McDermott. Alex has been at One Bills Drive all week as the Bills prepare for Baltimore on Sunday and Patrick asks him to describe what the vibe's been like there, as Buffalo is in the unusual spot of being a home underdog despite not having a loss all season in Orchard Park. How much does that Week four game when Baltimore pounded Buffalo play a part on the betting line so many months later? It's certainly for health and injury reasons. The guys talk about how much heathier Buffalo is coming into this game compared to earlier this season against Baltimore and last year at this time in their three point AFC divisional playoff heartbreaking loss to Kansas City. Also, Alex has thoughts on how much of a legacy game this is for McDermott. The Bills head coach has a 6-6 playoff record but has often got stuck at this point of the postseason. He's often compared by Bills fans to Marty Schottenheimer, an unfair comparison and it's discussed how best-case we may be seeing with Sean what happened with Bill Cowher and Tony Dungy years ago. Regardless, the guys talk about how important a win would be to his legacy and how much another loss in this round may tarnish it. That plus the significance of Ed Oliver and DaQuan Jones playing great for Buffalo on Sunday, who much the weather and home field should matter, a couple of Bills X-factors and plenty more. You can follow Alex on Twitter @AlexBrasky and check out his work at the Batavia Daily News. Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry are unlike anyone at their respective positions. The quarterback will likely win his third MVP, judging by the All-Pro voting. The running back is up to 2,107 yards and 18 touchdowns on the season, all at the age of 31 years old. But you heard it from A.J. Epenesa after the Buffalo Bills' wild-card win over Denver. This Buffalo Bills defense that's suffered its share of postseason duds will not put the Ravens up on a pedestal. They're confident in their own progress since. Week 4. “We definitely respect them,” Epenesa told Go Long, “but there's a way to beat everybody and that's our mindset.”On Substack Live, from One Bills Drive, I was joined by Jay Skurski of The Buffalo News on Wednesday. We dive into the match-up.* How should the Bills defend this duo? Theoretically, Sean McDermott could replace nickel Taron Johnson with a linebacker, but is it worth changing who you are?* Is McDermott's team looser into this playoff game vs. past divisional round games? He got into the psychology of his team in our sitdown last week. * Which Ed Oliver shows up? Buffalo needs him. * Tackling Derrick Henry in 5-degree weather likely will not be a fun experience. Which team benefits from the bitter cold in the forecast? * Why the Bills are determined to win on the line of scrimmage.* Josh Allen will need be the purest form of Josh Allen to win.As a reminder, download the app and turn notifications on to hang out with Go Long on future Substack Live videos:Thanks, all. More stories coming soon. This is the best sports weekend of the year. How did the Packers and the Vikings fall apart at the worst possible time? Brandon Beane played poker on Day 1, found his wide receiver on Day 2 and sure hopes the Buffalo Bills landed a few more long-term starters throughout the 2024 NFL Draft. It was an eventful weekend at One Bills Drive. Go Long has been tracking the direction of this team closely since last December's three-part series, and wanted to take a moment to assess the state of affairs with the draft now in the books. On Sunday, I examined why Beane's guts are a positive sign. Buffalo has lacked such cojones when it comes to those Kansas City Chiefs. Here on the podcast, let's welcome back Bills beat writer Jay Skurski of The Buffalo News. We analyze why Coleman was the pick at No. 33, how he'll fit into the offense and — mainly — why there should be some real optimism with the team despite losing so many starters this offseason. There are questions to answer. Beane now hands the baton to Sean McDermott. Don't worry non-Bills fans. We'll get back to the rest of the NFL on the pod, too. Jim Monos rejoins the program soon to review the draft as a whole. Audio and video is above, and you can also assess this episode on Apple, Spotify and YouTube. Thanks, all.Brandon Beane's message to KC is clear: Bring it on.Bob McGinn's nine-part draft series, icymi: * Part 1, WR/TE: Hall of Fame talent at the top, then (many) questions* Part 2, OL: Can this 'long-armed Tyrannosaurus Rex' brawl?* Part 3, QB: Gap between Caleb Williams & Jayden Daniels? On this episode of Talking Buffalo, the NFL Draft has finally arrived and Patrick Moran is making his final Buffalo Bills predictions with analysis of some possible scenarios just hours before the real thing is set to begin. After spending weeks if not months believing that a non-wide receiver was very much in play with Buffalo's first pick depending on how things fell, Patrick's heard enough to now believe it's a receiver no matter what theme inside the walls at One Bills Drive. That makes the question not if the Bills will take a wide receiver in the first round, but rather which one and at what point. Patrick lays out scenarios that could have them go as high as Tennessee at seven to go get Rome Odunze, the mid-to-late teens to fish out Brian Thomas Jr. or even just a few spots to ensure one of the tier of other guys they like to be available. In fact, Patrick lays out his prediction that the Bills ultimately move up three spots with the Green Bay Packers to get the wide receiver he thinks is their best fit, Xavier Legette over Xavier Worthy and Adonai Mitchell. In his quick four-round mock Patrick explains why his choice would be Legette and in fact it's just the first of two trades he makes on behalf of Brandon Beane. After being rejected in a trade-up offer in the second round Patrick stands pat and explains why safety Kamren Kinchens is the perfect Bills pick there, even if PFF thinks the selection stinks. Buffalo doesn't have a third round pick but that changes when Patricks wings a deal and ends up grabbing a guard he thinks can compete for a starting job right away, Cooper Beebe. He finishes up with a wide receiver double dip in round four. Patrick also talks about not sleeping on Mack Hollins if Buffalo doesn't dip, some free agent veteran options still out there if Beane doesn't adequately address edge over the next few days, how he'd be willing to move up and pay the hefty price for Odunze were it his call and much more. ♦♦♦♦♦ Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast Substack: Patrick Moran's Substack Twitter: @PatMoranTweets. Gerald “Smoke” Dixon brings the goods this episode. There is a 100-percent chance we bring him back on the Go Long Show soon. From 2014 to 2020, Dixon was a pro scout for the Buffalo Bills. As a result, he has many stories — and a ton of insight — to share. Especially at the quarterback position. For nearly two hours, Dixon dishes on everything:* Who pounded the table for Josh Allen inside the Buffalo Bills' pre-draft meetings? Three individuals specifically made their strong opinions known. * 2018 draft drama. How did the Bills rank this class as a whole? The entire front office was sweating as picks began.* Lamar Jackson slipped through the NFL cracks… how? It pays to trust your eyes. Dixon also recalls a pre-draft conversation with GM Brandon Beane on the Louisville quarterback. * Allen was not living in the film room early in his career. His backyard style was always unique — in every sense. Dixon can still hear Allen's fastball “whistle” and his mettle in the pocket was rare. * Art of scouting quarterbacks. Everyone can watch the same film of the same player and come away with completely different opinions. One rule of thumb Dixon follows? If a QB gets “a cinder block” thrown in his face, in the pocket, how does he respond?* Why he's high on Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy and Washington's Michael Penix Jr.* Dixon loves the 2024 class of QB prospects even more than the 2020 group of Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, Tua Tagovailoa, Jordan Love and Jalen Hurts. * Will Caleb Williams play for the Chicago Bears? Dixon says no. He sees the USC star somehow getting to the Washington Commanders. To him, a century of quarterback butchery in Chicago is to blame. * Larry Fitzgerald or DeAndre Hopkins? * A needed Hall of Fame rant.* One Pepper Johnson story that explains Bill Belichick's greatness — the Patriots coach was constantly taking notes. (An innocent conversation with Sean McVay isn't so innocent.)* Dixon's thoughts on the first 48 hours of free agency. Who reached? * Pre-draft dinners. Dixon and the Bills learned so much about the incoming class of Ohio State Buckeyes at Giancarlo's Sicilian Steakhouse in 2016. Especially, cornerback Eli Apple. His teammates were ruthless and relentless and Apple didn't stick up for himself. Having a loose conversation with prospects — as opposed to a strict, formal interview — can tell a team a lot about mental make-up.* Why Dixon is not surprised one bit that DeMeco Ryans, his former ‘Bama teammate, has the Houston Texans on the cusp of contention.* How did college football players get cash in his day? By working certain, uh, “jobs.”* Dixon was around Stefon Diggs at One Bills Drive. He repeats what Isaiah McKenzie once said on our podcast: You've got to let the wide receiver get his emotions out. You can listen to the Go Long Show right here at GoLongTD.com or wherever you listen to podcasts, including Apple, Spotify and YouTube.Today, Dixon is an analyst for 24/7 Sports. A four-year starter at cornerback for Alabama (1999- ‘02) — winning the SEC title in ‘99 — Dixon coached at The Citadel (2008- ‘13) before scouting for the Bills. He also served as the director of operations for the XFL's DC Defenders (2020), Director of Scouting for Vanderbilt (2021- ‘22) and the General Manager for Maryland (2022- ‘23). You can follow “Smoke” on X @CoachGVDixon.Thanks for watching/listening, everyone. Video is above.ICYMI: * Join our next Happy Hour to ask longtime Pittsburgh Steelers guard Ramon Foster anything you want.* Why the Green Bay Packers, title contenders, got this right (and more free agency musings)* 'Why not three-peat?' Greg Castillo, Trent McDuffie and the inner-workings of a Chiefs dynasty* McGinn's Top 55: Where's the defense? Scouts weigh in on the top prospects in the 2024 class. This is a public episode. The Buffalo Bills and Brandon Beane were making heads spin with numerous roster moves, including the release of some all-time fan favorites Jordan Poyer and Tre'Davious White. Gone are Mitch Morse and others as well. Times are changing in Buffalo but their Super Bowl window is still open. Also, are Rob Johnson and Drew Bledsoe to blame for the Bills' 17-year playoff drought? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
