We are delighted to welcome Liam Gallagher's drummer, Dan McDougall, to The StageLeft Podcast. Dan paints an interesting picture on being the first person to collaborate on the demos for Liam Gallagher's platinum selling album – As You Were. He discusses in detail his and Liam's unique relationship, the early rehearsals, and Liam's reaction on hearing Dan's favourite record of all time; ‘…he took my beer off me and announced to the table I was too drunk…' A man who facilitated the second coming of the force that is Liam Gallagher, Dan discusses his development as songwriter and drummer, what the first rehearsals with Liam were like, how to thrive when working with big personalities, and how to prepare for high pressure shows such as last month's Brit Awards, where he had to the sing the most important line in Live Forever to this year's biggest TV audiences. Dan gives incredible insight into how to succeed in the music industry as a songwriter, producer, and session musician. He talks about his preferred recording software, playing Don't Look Back in Anger at Glastonbury, arriving for the One Love Manchester with minutes to spare, how he tailors his songwriting for individual artists, and the price to be paid for working in the music industry; ‘…It's the waiting game isn't it, there's a lot of waiting around (on tour), so some people just turn to something else to keep themselves busy…' Also discussed are Dan's career setbacks, the science of songwriting, his technique to get over writer's block, and his advice for young musicians; ‘…Don't be so disheartened by someone telling you something is bad, or you can work on it. I think I'd tell people don't be offended because there will be a lot of people saying no along the way – just take it on the chin and keep working harder…' We hear from fellow Leeds College of Music alumni John Waugh (Episode 32), and Dan explains why LCoM has been so important to himself and others. He answers what challenges exist for young musicians today, what fears he has for the music industry - and how they might be addressed, and will there be a second Liam Gallagher album on the horizon. #asyouwere #drums #music #musician #drummer #drumming #songwriting #interview #liamgallagher #oasis #wonderwall #liveforever

Granted, she isn't earning that status because of some ongoing Twitter feud with one of her contemporaries or because she's a femme fatale, or even because she has a reputation for being difficult to work with. Quite the opposite, she's earned it because she's a genuine talent who is vocally gifted, genuinely sincere, and backs it up with her beauty (inwards as well as outwards). She has racked up three platinum albums, multiple top 10 hits, critical praise for her singing, #2 song of the year for "Into You" and one of the top summer songs of 2014 for "Problem" with Iggy Azalea. Couple this with her acting career; she's become a true powerhouse in just a few short years. After her amazing turn leading the "One Love Manchester" just several weeks after a bombing at one of her performances there to raise money for the victims, it became readily clear that Ariana Grande has the poise, grace, and maturity often lacking in today's, uh lackluster pop princesses. She garnered a great deal of praise from critics as well as parents whose kids slurp up her music by the bushels. More importantly, she's been a proud supporter of the LGBTQ community making her one of our favorites when it comes to the new crop of DIVAS we love and admire. Much like her contemporary Selena Gomez, she has a very long and varied career ahead of her. June was perhaps the most exciting month for popular musick in 2017. We received a new album from Katy Perry + her 96-hour livestream, the momentous One Love Manchester concert in response to Islamic State's attack on an Ariana Grande Concert, and also the supplanting of Electropop by Trop-pop as the paradigm of the moment. Currently, we are in a transitional period, where many releases retain elements of both. It will be very interesting to see how this develops because Electropop had been ascendant since the time of the onset of the 'Great Recession.' I can't imagine tropical will still be 'a thing' in 10 years time, but who knows? We also have some folky pop, some rocky pop, and one Hip-Hop and ChillNB cut each, live performances, unreleased musick, as well as independent releases. Niall, Noah, Demi, Iggy, Liana Banks, bea miller, Ariana, and Miley all feature! 1) On The Loose (Live) - Niall Horan - Pop - Unreleased 2)I’m Stuck - Noah Cyrus - Folk-Pop - RECORDS 3)Instruction - Jax Jones - Trop-Pop - Polydor (Vivendi) 4)Switch - Iggy Azalea - Trop-Pop - Def Jam (Vivendi) 5)Roulette - Katy Perry - Electropop - Capitol (Vivendi) 6)buy me diamonds - Bea Miller - Pop - Hollywood (Disney) 7)People Like Me - Liana Banks - Trop-Pop - Rebirth/MARCH 8)Loose Wrists - Cazwell - Hip-Hop - SNOWCONE 9)Teenage Fantasy - Jorja Smith - Chill’NB - FAMM 10)Don’t Dream It’s Over (Live) - Ariana Grande + Miley Cyrus - Pop - Unreleased Best)Miss You More - Katy Perry - Pop - Capitol (Vivendi) Leaderboard: Artist- Katy Perry + Die Antwoord (Tie) (5) Genre- Hip Hop (57) Label- Atlantic (12) Conglomerate- Vivendi (32)
Anyone in the mood for old beef? Taylor Swift and Katy Perry are on hand to dispense their leathery grumps, and Fraser appears to be trolling Laura. Elsewhere, there's a realisation that nice people aren't always nice, we finally nail our political colours to a mast, and swoon appreciatively in the direction of One Love Manchester. Fraser's BBC Music piece about Over the Rainbow is here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/articles/efc32112-f7a0-49b3-bfae-6e6a72a80572 As ever, all of this week's notable tracks are in our rolling Spotify playlist: https://open.spotify.com/user/snapes/playlist/2J6T6Ks6rQNNe9vUeu24ON Laura's most-listened-to song this week is "Did You See" by J Hus and Fraser's is “3WW” by Alt-J.
