What a Friday it was in Carnduff as the Western Canadian Baseball League came to the community and put on a show for the second-annual Rural Roots Baseball Classic. A massive tip of the cap to everyone involved in organizing yet another memorable day in celebrating the past, present and future of baseball in Carnduff and southeastern Saskatchewan. Last year's inaugural event in Oyen was fantastic and this season's was another spectacle with a packed house coming to see the Saskatoon Berries and Weyburn Beavers do battle. After the tremendous success of the inaugural Rural Roots Baseball Classic in Oyen last summer, the Western Canadian Baseball League is making it an annual tradition. The circuit announced on Monday that Carnduff, Saskatchewan will play host to the event on May 29th with the Weyburn Beavers at home to the Saskatoon Berries. The league held a news conference to make the announcement and to allow reporters to speak to all the parties, so we have a few of the highlights with league president Kevin Kvame, John Prette of the Weyburn Beavers, Steve Hildebrand of the Saskatoon Berries, and Carnduff Recreation Director Jodie Wall. We also have a one-on-one conversation with community baseball coach, teacher and local event organizer Blair Beck about the importance of the day and how Carnduff plans to put on a show. Cuando dejes a la Palabra de Dios llegar hasta tu corazón, aprenderás más del diablo de lo que alguna vez hayas deseado, pues él hará todo lo posible para que la Palabra sea infructuosa en tu vida. Tratará de confundirte con cada paso. Tendrás problemas, pero la diferencia ahora es que también tendrás la respuesta―la Palabra de Dios. Gracias a Dios, por medio de Cristo Jesús tienes el poder para derrotar a Satanás. Cuando éste genere problemas y desilusiones en tu camino, no tienes que postrarte y dejar que te arrollen. Continúa peleando la buena batalla de la fe hasta que venzas. Algunas veces serás derribado. Pero cuando eso suceda, levántate y declara: "Mira bien, diablo, no permitiré que robes la Palabra de mi corazón. Está ahí, y estoy meditando en ella. La confieso con mi boca y actúo conforme a ella hasta que las bendiciones de Dios me alcancen. Si no me crees, ¡sólo escóndete y observa!". Al tomar esa actitud, sin importar lo que el diablo haga, él jamás podrá convertirte en un "pedregal" cristiano. Ty Oyen has been named a Beck's Player with Heart due to his dedication to his school, community, and the agriculture industry. Ty has spent his entire life farming. He doesn't see it as a job, but instead as a lifestyle that he will never give up. After football practice, he goes straight to the field. When he's asked about it, he says farming is not work to him and that he enjoys it a lot. Ty is the captain of the football team, a team leader in basketball, and participates in track. He is also part of FFA and FBLA. Ty enjoys the teamwork aspect of these activities, as everyone gets along and works together towards one goal. Ty is involved in several community activities, including with his church. He and his brother are often called on by their pastor if the church requires manual labor. His family also acts as their area's mechanics, so Ty often helps diagnose and fix farm equipment. it's admittedly been a while since we last caught up with Oyen's Gavin Logan. After being selected in the ninth round of the 2022 MLB Draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks, it's been a rollercoaster couple of years as he's tried to make a name for himself. The Dawgs Academy and Okotoks Dawgs alum had a breakthrough of sorts this year, starting the season with the High-A Hillsboro Hops before getting an unexpected call to the Triple-A Reno Aces. He made the most of the week-long promotion, went back to Hillsboro, then back to Reno where he hit three homers in three games and was a steady presence behind the plate. The 25-year-old then spent the rest of the year with the Double-A Amarillo Sod Poodles. All told, he hit .233 with eight homers and 31 RBI in 64 games. It was a productive season that Logan hopes will help cement himself as an option for the Diamondbacks heading into 2026.

It was a fantastic weekend to celebrate the past, showcase the present and inspire the future of baseball in Oyen. The WCBL's first Rural Roots Baseball Classic took to the field at Doug Lehman Field between the Lethbridge Bulls and Sylvan Lake Gulls. It was held to mark the 30th anniversary of the Oyen Pronghorns claiming their first Saskatchewan Major Baseball League title, the first for an Alberta-based team in what is now the WCBL. It was an emotional day as well with mayor and long-time baseball architect and booster Doug Jones being honoured with the re-naming of the park where the game was held. Led by Kelli-Ann Nixdorf, the project utilizes a creative engagement method around intriguing photographs, allowing students to interview seniors and publish their stories. This project takes places in several of our Prairie Rose communities: Foremost, Oyen, Bow Island and Dunmore. The discussion highlights the project's impact on students' skills, including public speaking, writing, empathy, digital organization and creativity, as well as the positive feedback from participants.

  «Otros son como lo sembrado entre las piedras. Al oír la palabra, enseguida la reciben con gozo; pero, como no tienen raíz, su vida es muy corta, y al venir las aflicciones o la persecución por causa de la palabra, enseguida tropiezan» (Marcos 4:16-17) Parece que hay abundancia de “pedregales” cristianos en estos días. Al comienzo, cuando comienzan en la vida cristiana, se emocionan con la Palabra de Dios. Oyen un mensaje acerca de la prosperidad y vuelven a sus hogares diciendo: “¡Aleluya! Voy a prosperar, en el nombre de Jesús”. Pero luego, por alguna razón las cosas no marchan como ellos esperaban. Su cuenta bancaria no se duplica de la noche a la mañana. Se decepcionan con algo. Reciben algunas críticas. Luego, en poco tiempo, su fe se marchita. Si no quieres que eso te suceda, decide ahora mismo que no te dejarás derrotar por esos momentos difíciles. Decide ahora que te mantendrás firme en la Palabra, aun en medio de la persecución y la aflicción, pues te garantizo: los problemas sí vendrán a tu vida. Cuando uno se decide a vivir por fe, las pruebas no desaparecen. En su lugar, aprendes a vencerlas. Cuando dejes a la Palabra de Dios llegar hasta tu corazón, aprenderás más del diablo de lo que alguna vez hayas deseado, pues él hará todo lo posible para que la Palabra sea infructuosa en tu vida. Tratará de confundirte con cada paso. Tendrás problemas, pero la diferencia ahora es que también tendrás la respuesta―la Palabra de Dios. Gracias a Dios, por medio de Cristo Jesús tienes el poder para derrotar a Satanás. Cuando éste genere problemas y desilusiones en tu camino, no tienes que postrarte y dejar que te arrollen. Continúa peleando la buena batalla de la fe hasta que venzas. Algunas veces serás derribado. Pero cuando eso suceda, levántate y declara: “Mira bien, diablo, no permitiré que robes la Palabra de mi corazón. Está ahí, y estoy meditando en ella. La confieso con mi boca y actúo conforme a ella hasta que las bendiciones de Dios me alcancen. Si no me crees, ¡sólo escóndete y observa!”. Al tomar esa actitud, sin importar lo que el diablo haga, él jamás podrá convertirte en un “pedregal” cristiano. Ty Oyen has already been on the big stage at the National FFA Convention for he and his partner, Gage's, Agrisicence Research Project regarding water quality on part of Ty's farm in South Dakota.  This happened in Ty and Gage's 9th Grade year of high school!  It is amazing to see photos of those two receiving their awards in Indianapolis and to know that they have just begun their high school and FFA journeys. However, after speaking with Ty for a few minutes you realize that being surprised that he accomplished this already is just underestimating him.  Ty is devoted to farming, and his schedule reflects that.  He is having very much a normal high school experience for an athletic person.  He plays three sports - football, basketball and track - and of course, he is in the FFA.  But all of that is book ended by farming. Ty gets up in the morning at about 6am, and before he heads to school he bottle feeds about 30 calves.  Then he has school all day, practice for whatever sport is in season after school and he finally heads home.  But, when he gets home he changes clothes, heads out to the shop and works on whatever project his father and grandfather have given he and his brother. When school is out for the summer, Ty is working in the family business custom bailing hay for folks or custom chopping hay and corn for other people's livestock feed needs.  Looking into the future, Ty is focused on farming.  He and his older brother are going to study to become diesel technicians, specializing in John Deere Equipment.  They use a lot of John Deere equipment on the farm already, but it becomes increasingly more complex to work on.  However, by becoming experts they will be able to solve a lot of these problems themselves, without the need to pay expensive shop rates and taken equipment back to the dealership.

The Snow-Burner by Henry Oyen audiobook. The Snow-Burner is what the Native Americans called Reivers, and it was a rough and tumble life in the land where Reivers chose to live up to his name. The name was attributed to Reivers upon his proof after arriving in the north country because of his ability to defeat all perceived enemies in whatever means was necessary; whether by brute force and tough action, or by sheer cunning which he had gained living in the city in his earlier days. When assigned to oversee a group of foreigners in a work camp, he treated them with utter cruelty. When in search of an unknown source of gold, he found it necessary to combine his cunning with his forceful ways, proving his worthiness of the title given him.
