Katie Dauch is her FFA Chapter's President, a junior in high school, a gardener, a food preserver and a very benevolent high school student. Starting way back in elementary school, Katie and her mom started growing a raised bed garden at their home in Upstate New York for their own food production and food security. They used canning methods to preserve food for themselves, and between what they grew and what they purchased they put away food for the winter. This is what led Katie to take her first agriculture class and ultimately to become involved in the FFA. She and her mom are still growing vegetables in their raised beds and canning them. It was the involvement in the FFA that led to Katie's SAE. Seeing that the school was producing more vegetables in it's community garden than was being consumed, Katie decided to preserve those vegetables in the same manner that she did at home. However, once they were preserved she donated them to food banks around her community. There are three food banks that are happy to accept the preserved vegetables and soups that Katie and her mom make, and her community is the better for having her!
Mya Ibarra is a junior in high school and the historian of her FFA Chapter. She is also an amazing human. Coming from a non-agricultural background, she was enticed into an FFA meeting by pizza when she was in the 7th Grade. Since then, she has become very involved and things have taken off for her. She also plays three sports, including basketball, and she had never shot a basketball prior to going out for the team during her sophomore year! If that is not enough, she has aspirations of becoming a physician, and science and math are her strongest subjects! When it came time to develop an SAE, Mya gave it some serious thought. She looked around and thought about the teachers she had throughout her school life so far and realized how much work they put in, even at home. Mya believes that teachers are under appreciated, so she decided to start a subscription flower service to bring smiles to their faces. Mya began purchasing flowers from a farm about 45 minutes away and selling monthly subscription services to teachers and staff at her school at a very low cost. She doesn't have any profit motive. She simply wants to brighten the day of these great women and men. So, she charges only $5/month, just enough to cover her costs and allow her to continue providing flowers to these folks!

Ty Oyen has already been on the big stage at the National FFA Convention for he and his partner, Gage's, Agrisicence Research Project regarding water quality on part of Ty's farm in South Dakota. This happened in Ty and Gage's 9th Grade year of high school! It is amazing to see photos of those two receiving their awards in Indianapolis and to know that they have just begun their high school and FFA journeys. However, after speaking with Ty for a few minutes you realize that being surprised that he accomplished this already is just underestimating him. Ty is devoted to farming, and his schedule reflects that. He is having very much a normal high school experience for an athletic person. He plays three sports - football, basketball and track - and of course, he is in the FFA. But all of that is book ended by farming. Ty gets up in the morning at about 6am, and before he heads to school he bottle feeds about 30 calves. Then he has school all day, practice for whatever sport is in season after school and he finally heads home. But, when he gets home he changes clothes, heads out to the shop and works on whatever project his father and grandfather have given he and his brother. When school is out for the summer, Ty is working in the family business custom bailing hay for folks or custom chopping hay and corn for other people's livestock feed needs. Looking into the future, Ty is focused on farming. He and his older brother are going to study to become diesel technicians, specializing in John Deere Equipment. They use a lot of John Deere equipment on the farm already, but it becomes increasingly more complex to work on. However, by becoming experts they will be able to solve a lot of these problems themselves, without the need to pay expensive shop rates and taken equipment back to the dealership.

As a result, we bring you not one, but two parts so you can experience the full value that Managing Partner Linda Greub and Partner, Tracy Dooley, MD, have to to offer. Part 1 sets the stage for how Linda and Tracy came to found Avestria VC and quite a bit about their thesis closing with advice on what makes a good CEO and Board. Approaching the topic of driving with seniors can be one of the most challenging conversations that families face. If a senior has a medical condition, must take medications, or hasn't driven much in the last few years, it can affect their ability to drive safely. And unfortunately, it's often up to the family to address these concerns, but it can be difficult to know where to start or what the impairment is. In this episode of Absolute Trust Talk Live, attorney Madison Gunn talks with Melanie Henry of Driver Cognitive Assessment Center (DCAC) about the services and assessments available to help families make decisions regarding their loved one's driving skills. The goal of DCAC is to offer seniors fair and accurate evaluations positively and compassionately while working to keep communities safe. They also provide support to families and physicians to help them address driving concerns with their loved ones. Some of the topics covered in this podcast include: How to handle your concerns if you fear your senior family member should no longer be driving The types of driving assessments available for these seniors How the assessment results are handled and reported And more. Melanie's background includes social welfare, risk assessment, and senior caregiver. She is a licensed driving school instructor and also helps provide medical rides to Tri-Valley Seniors with a local non-profit named the Senior Support Program of the Tri-Valley. We're excited to have her highlight a topic that many people avoid. If you or someone close to you could benefit from a driving assessment, you'll want to listen to this podcast to hear more about how you can handle this concern in a loving and understanding way.
Host Brandon Cardwell speaks with Luis Dussan, the founder, CTO, and board member of AEye, Inc., LIDAR technology company that develops autonomous sensor platforms for the advanced driver assistance systems and autonomous vehicle markets. Startup Tri-Valley is particularly proud to note that AEye was the first company to be incubated by i-GATE Innovation Hub in Livermore and in the Tri-Valley. Since it began in 2013, AEye has grown to a company of more than 150 people. When AEye went public in 2021 it was valued at $1.2B and trades on the NASDAQ as LIDR. Among other honors, Luis has been named a 2022 Self-Driving Power Player by Business Insider. In this episode, Luis talks about his early years and what led him to form AEye, a bit about LIDAR and why it is so important for autonomous sensor platforms, how he communicated its value to investors, why the Tri-Valley, the future of the industry, and why i-GATE was crucial for their success. My guest for this episode is Shana Peete. Shana is currently the CEO of the Center for Excellence in Nonprofits based in the Bay Area in CA. Prior to joining CEN in 2019, Shana served as the founding executive director of Partners for Change of the Tri-Valley, an organization dedicated to offering individuals and families a hand up from poverty. She has a Bachelor of Science in international business and a Doctor of Jurisprudence. She practiced law for eight years prior to moving to the Bay Area and has professional experience that includes managing Excel Child Development Center, serving as a program coordinator for Read Aloud America, and managing a 30 person customer fulfillment team for Amazon. In her spare time, she enjoys teaching the game of tennis to students of all ages and using her gift of communication—in English and Spanish—to bring people together. In light of COVID-19 and the social uprising in support of Black lives, Shana, a community activist, was tapped to serve as moderator for a three-city panel on Racial Inequity in City Government and Policing featuring nine government officials. Shana currently serves on the Tri-Valley Nonprofit Alliance's board of directors. Her passion is creating avenues for others who, like her, are members of groups historically excluded from board service in the nonprofit and for-profit worlds. With a focus on IDEAL (inclusion, diversity, equity, access, and liberation), she consults with individuals and organizations similar to ensure their preparedness for this unprecedented level of openness and opportunity to learn and grow in greater partnership than ever before. Here's what to expect during the episode: What is IDEAL? What does IDEAL mean for nonprofit leaders? How does this program help nonprofit leaders? Why is there a need to reconcile your organizational values with your values? Why is IDEAL important in a nonprofit organization? How is this concept introduced to the board? Why is organizational culture influential? How do you embrace the challenges of a multigenerational workplace? Connect with Shana Peete!
