(San Francisco Insight Meditation Community) In the midst of an uncertain world, where do we find refuge? This talk will explore the theme of refuge. What is it? How do we find it? And what does it mean to discover a place of refuge within the human heart?
(San Francisco Insight Meditation Community) This talk explores what leads us to spiritual practice and how spiritual life unfolds, drawing on the quote from the 8th century Chan Master, Ch'ing Yuan: "When I first began to practice, mountains were mountains and waters were waters. After I had practiced for some time, mountains were no longer mountains and waters were no longer waters. When I reached final peace, once again mountains were mountains and waters were waters.”
Many of us come to our practice with some degree of suffering. Our regular ways of dealing with life may be creating stress, or we feel a wanting, that something is missing as we engage in our capitalistic society. While yearning for something is not in itself bad, we need to examine where we are looking for it. Rather than trying to just get from here to there or to become something we are not, can our practice help us become more genuine and experience our essential self? In this talk, Pamela shares that delusion is at the heart of our grasping and aversion, because we still believe something we get or attain will alleviate our dissatisfaction. It is the falling away of this fantasy that is the gift of spiritual practice because it can lead us to being at peace in our lives. ______________Pamela Weiss is a dual-lineage Buddhist teacher in Soto Zen and Theravada, and the author of “A Bigger Sky: Awakening a Fierce Feminine Buddhism." In this podcast, Pamela Weiss and I discuss her recently published memoir A Bigger Sky: Awakening a Fierce Feminine Buddhism. Pamela is the first lay practitioner to receive full Dharma transmission in the Suzuki Roshi Soto Zen lineage. She is also authorized as a teacher in the Theravada tradition. In this lively, intimate, and heartfelt conversation, we discuss how her Buddhist practice—as a monastic and a layperson—calmed her internal storm of suffering to reveal an abiding and spacious sky of awareness. We also delve into experiences of kensho, what it means to be a lay transmitted teacher, and the wisdom of the feminine. Pamela Weiss is also a guiding teacher at San Francisco Insight and a member of the Spirit Rock Teacher Council. She is a leadership coach, entrepreneur, and pioneer in bringing Buddhist principles and practices into the workplace. Pamela lives in San Francisco with her husband, Eugene, and little dog, Grover. The women around the Buddha dropped a ton of useful wisdom, but I suspect you haven't heard much about that. Why? Why have these women been largely written out of history? And what do these hidden figures have to teach us? We're diving in on that today with Pamela Weiss, dharma teacher in the Zen and Theravada traditions and author of A Bigger Sky. Last week, we had on Bhikkhu Bodhi, who talked about the words of the Buddha. You might think of this episode as a follow-up to that one—part compelling history, part injection of approachable wisdom. In this conversation, we talk about Pamela's research into the Buddha's wife, mom, and aunt; how and why Buddhism became tilted toward the masculine; and the benefits both Pamela and I have experienced from bringing more feminine energy to our practice and life.
